How can a mare and a beetle console a woman fleeing her sexual awakening? Clara Sola, the debut feature by Costa Rican-Swedish director Nathalie Alvarez, seems to outline an answer.

The film’s lead is 40-year-old Clara, who suffers from a religious repression driven by her own mother in a remote Costa Rican village. Tension increases in her family when her niece approaches her 15th birthday and introduces her boyfriend. This situation will lead Clara to undertake a journey of liberation from all the prejudices that have dominated her life.

The film premiered this July in the United States at a key political and social moment for the debate on abortion and feminism. It was previously presented at the Cannes, Guadalajara, Lima, Sao Paulo, BFI London, Goteborg, Cartagena and Thessaloniki film festivals. It won five awards at the Guldbagges (Swedish Film Awards): Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Screenplay.

In the midst of flights, intercontinental travel, premieres and awards, Nathalie Álvarez spoke with AL DÍA before the screening of her production in New York, California, Ohio, Oregon and Washington.

How did the idea of producing Clara Sola come up? What inspired you?

It was born as an exercise to apply to a screenwriting school. They gave us a couple of photos and from there Clara was born, who is very honest with herself and feels no shame. The first scene is a masturbation, a scene of liberation. From there the rest develops. It takes place in a rural area in Costa Rica. I co-wrote it with María Camila Arias. She grew up in Colombia and I grew up in Costa Rica. We always look at Latin America with a lot of love, but we also question the patriarchal norms that are passed from generation to generation, from woman to woman. Patriarchy continues to reproduce itself, even in homes where there are no men.

The lead is Wendy Chinchilla, who lives the character body and soul. How was the casting?

From the beginning I was almost sure she would be a dancer, because I needed a person who had a lot of body control, even though Clara is a character who doesn’t move that much. La película tiene como protagonista a Clara, de 40 años, quien sufre una represión religiosa impulsada por su propia madre en un remoto pueblo de Costa Rica. La tensión aumenta en su familia cuando su sobrina se acerca a los 15 años y presenta a su novio. Esta situación llevará a Clara a emprender un viaje de liberación sobre todos los prejuicios que han dominado su vida.

La cinta se estrenó este julio en Estados Unidos en un momento político y social clave para el debate sobre el aborto y el feminismo. Antes fue presentada en los festivales de cine de Cannes, Guadalajara, Lima, Sao Paulo, BFI London, Goteborg, Cartagena y Thessaloniki. Se consagró en el Guldbagges (Swedish Film Awards) con cinco premios: Mejor Película. Mejor Director, Mejor Cinematografía, Mejor Sonido y Mejor Guion.

En medio de vuelos, viajes intercontinentales, estrenos y premiaciones, Nathalie Álvez conversó con AL DÍA antes de la proyección de su producción en Nueva York, California, Ohio, Oregon y Washington.

¿Cómo surgió la idea de producir ‘ Clara Sola’? ¿Qué le inspiró?

Nace como un ejercicio para aplicar a una escuela de guion. Nos dieron un par de fotos y a partir de ahí nació Clara, que es muy honesta consigo misma y no siente vergüenza. La primera escena es una masturbación, una escena de liberación. A partir de ahí se desarrolla el resto. Ocurre en una zona rural en Costa Rica. La co-escribí con María Camila Arias. Ella creció en Colombia y yo en Costa Rica. Siempre vemos a Latinoamérica con mucho amor, pero también cuestionamos las normas patriarcales que pasan de generación en generación, de mujer a mujer. El patriarcado se sigue reproduciendo, incluso, en casas donde no hay hombres.

La protagonista es Wendy Chinchilla, que vive el personaje en cuerpo y alma. ¿Cómo fue el casting?

Desde el inicio estaba casi segura de que sería una bailarina, porque necesitaba una persona que tuviera mucho control del cuerpo, pese a que Clara es un personaje que no se mueve tanto. Pero sí tiene mucho movimiento interior. Empecé a buscar en varios lugares y a Wendy la conocí en un espectáculo de danza contemporánea donde la vi bailando. Y la llamamos al casting. Trabajamos mucho, porque vengo del teatro físico y el mimo y ella viene de la danza. Trabajamos a partir de lo físico, de las imágenes internas y de imaginarnos cómo tenía pequeñas raíces en la espalda para crear la postura que tiene Clara. inner movement. I started looking in various places and I met Wendy at a contemporary dance show where I saw her dancing. And we called her for the casting. We worked a lot, because I come from physical theater and mime and she comes from dance. We worked from the physical, from the internal images and imagining how she had small roots in her back to create the posture that Clara has. The internal images created the sensation that, inside, she is much bigger than her own body, that she needs to free herself. We worked a lot with the image of the wolf, Clara is 20 percent wolf.

You grew up between Costa Rica and Sweden, why did you choose Latin America for your debut lm?

This character of Clara came up living in Costa Rica. It was always very clear. The nice thing is that this is my fi rst fi lm in Spanish, because my short fi lms have been in Swedish and English.

In addition to Cannes, your lm has been screened in other European competitions. What has the public’s reception been like?

Very positive. I thought there would be certain topics that would be diffi cult to talk about, but I have found a positive response. There are topics that people don’t dare to talk about to start a conversation. But watching a platform, like a fi lm or any other work of art, it’s much easier to start a conversation.

Clara Sola arrives in the U.S. in the midst of the controversy over the repeal of abortion rights. What do you expect?

It’s very sad to follow this news and it’s very crazy that it’s happening because it could relatively infl uence the rest of the world. Clara Sola is a feminist fi lm about self-healing, self-love, and being able to choose. Clara is not allowed to choose about her own body, and this goes very much in parallel with this abortion thing. It’s something that was talked about in Costa Rica when the fi lm came out because abortion is illegal there. I hope the fi lm manages to open conversations, minds and hearts about women’s rights over their bodies.

Are there more Claras in the world?

There are many. In fact, in Costa Rica they used the hashtag #TodasSomosClara because, in a way, we all have something of Clara. It has a lot to do with how we have been raised, with the kind of betrayals that are imposed on us and how they limit us. I hope the fi lm creates internal revolutions, even if they are very small. That it leaves something that somehow revolutionizes, heals or angers. cuerpo, que necesita liberarse. Trabajamos mucho con la imagen de la loba, Clara es 20 por ciento loba.

Usted se crió entre Costa Rica y Suecia, ¿por qué eligió a América Latina para su ópera prima?

Este personaje de Clara surgió viviendo en Costa Rica. Siempre fue muy claro. Lo bonito es que es mi primera película en español, porque mis cortometrajes han sido en sueco y en inglés.

Además de Cannes, su película ha llegado a otros certámenes en Europa. ¿Cuál ha sido el recibimiento del público?

Muy positivo. Pensé que habría ciertos temas sobre los cuales iba a ser difícil hablar. Pero he encontrado una respuesta positiva. Hay temas sobre los cuales la gente no se atreve a hablar para empezar una conversación. Pero viendo una plataforma, como lo es una película o cualquier otra obra de arte, es mucho más fácil iniciar una conversación.

‘Clara Sola’ llega a EE.UU. en medio de la polémica por la derogación del derecho al aborto. ¿Qué espera?

Es muy triste seguir estas noticias y es muy loco que esté pasando porque podría infl uenciar relativamente al resto del mundo. ‘Clara Sola’ es una película feminista que trata de autosanación, de autoquererse, de poder elegir. A Clara no se le permite elegir sobre su propio cuerpo. Esto va muy en paralelo con esto del aborto. Es algo de lo que se habló en Costa Rica cuando salió la película porque allá el aborto es ilegal. Espero que la película logre abrir conversaciones, mentes y corazones en cuanto a que las mujeres tienen derecho sobre su propio cuerpo.

¿Existen más Claras en el mundo?

Muchas. De hecho, en Costa Rica pusieron el hashtag #TodasSomosClara, porque en cierta manera todas tenemos algo de Clara. Tiene mucho que ver con cómo hemos sido criadas, con el tipo de traiciones que nos imponen y cómo nos limitan. Espero que la película cree revoluciones internas, aunque sean muy pequeñas. Que deje algo que de alguna manera revolucione, sane o enoje.
