FRENTE UP FRONT THE REAL HEROES OF 2020

SEVEN IMMIGRANT WOMEN WERE SELECTED TO APPEAR IN A NEW PHILLY MURAL, BUT THEY REPRESENT WHOLE COMMUNITIES OF HEROES THAT PROPPED SOCIETY UP IN ITS DARKEST HOURS.

They are seven women from different countries, they speak different languages, follow different religions, but there is solidarity in what they’re now recognized as.

Heroes.

We heard a lot about heroes over the past 14 months — whether it was the nurse or doctor working long shifts in the COVID ward of a hospital or the farmworker that toiled in the fields picking crops to feed part of a nation that could afford isolation.

However, beyond those main storylines were those heroes holding their communities and families together through sheer willpower and love.

That’s where the seven immigrant women highlighted by artist Symone Salib’s latest mural in honor of World Refugee Day come in.

Their heroic efforts went unseen in the moment, but had lasting impacts. They shaped how their communities responded to the pandemic and are now playing a role in how they recover.

The stories of these seven women were also replicated countless other times across Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the whole U.S.A.

In lifting up their individual communities, these immigrant women lifted the entire country up in the process, and continue to do so to this day.

But ask them, and many would likely respond as one subject, Ivonne, did when she found out she was selected to appear in the mural.

In short, she thought it was a joke and didn’t see herself as the influence she was in her community as a mother.

Hopefully with the mural, Ivonne and all of the women honored in it, see the power they have as mothers. Not just for their families, but also their communities, as they were before, during and after 2020. z mia de COVID-19. Sin embargo, detrás de esas historias conocidas por todos, estaban aquellos héroes que mantenían unidas a sus comunidades y familias a través de pura fuerza de voluntad y amor. Ahí es donde figuran las siete mujeres inmigrantes destacadas en el último mural de la artista Symone Salib en honor al Día Mundial del Refugiado. Sus heroicos esfuerzos pasaron desapercibidos en el momento, pero tuvieron impactos duraderos. Ellas dieron forma a la forma en que sus comunidades respondieron a la pandemia y ahora están desempeñando un papel en cómo se recuperan. Las historias de estas siete mujeres también se repitieron en innumerables ocasiones en Filadelfia, Pensilvania y en todo Estados Unidos.
