Near them, on the sand, half sunk a shattered visage lies..” Today, the traveller would be every single Puerto Rican on planet earth; the trunkless legs - they belong to Governor Ricardo Rosselló. After 10 days of protests, Rosselló, the son of ex governor Pedro Rosselló - at whose feet he learned everything he knows about politics - refuses to step down as Puerto Rico’s governor. Almost a million people are taking to the streets of the capital, and across the island, demanding that The Dauphin has got to go. But - much like Ozymandias - who believed himself King of Kings - Rosselló refuses to let go of what he feels he is entitled to. His phrasing was a bit different. That was the last straw. The people not only spoke, they marched, protested, banged pots and pans, wrote songs, sang them, came out with the most artistic and creative protests I have ever seen, danced and cried one unified mantra: Ricky Renuncia. Yet The Dauphin, alone in his version of Versailles, refuses to budge. But, as befell Shelley’s Ozymandias, (although not at the hand of La Generacion de Benito), all that will be left of Rosselló’s legacy will be a head without a crown and two trunkless legs.

Bernie Sanders was in town to put its problem into context. “This is not just a Philadelphia issue. It is not just a Vermont issue. It is a national issue,” said Sanders to the crowd of 1,500 that gathered on North Broad Street on July 15. The presidential candidate is known for sounding the alarm for single-payer healthcare — a cornerstone of his 2016 presidential campaign. His message on the issue hasn’t changed in four years, and Hahnemann’s demise is the perfect example for Sanders to bring it up again going into 2020. However, he is not alone this time around, as Massachusetts Sen.

U

Elizabeth Warren has also supported a single-payer system. “We should not be talking about shutting down a major hospital and turning that property into hotels or condos,” said Sanders.

A MAJOR BLOW

After announcing bankruptcy at the beginning of the month, Hahnemann has slowly begun to wind down its services, beginning with its maternity ward on July 12 and stopped admitting patients to its ER on July 17. The entire operation will cease in September. Hahnemann’s closing not only leaves 2,500 without jobs in the city, but without its contributions in providing medical services for low-income patients, a void is left for the city’s most vulnerable. Those that can be transferred will either head all the way to North Philly to Temple University Hospital, or to nearby Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Susan Bowes, President of the Hahnemann Nurses Association said Temple is too far of a trip for some Hahnemann patients and Thomas Jefferson doesn’t accept every insurance plan. “We are talking — as all of you know — about a hospital JULY 24 - 31, 2019

that serves some of the most vulnerable people in this city,” said Sanders.

FIGHTING BACK

Also to speak on Monday afternoon were Philadelphia at-large Councilwoman Helen Gym, Sanders’ campaign co-chair Nina Turner, Executive Vice President of District 1199c Union Chris Woods, and patient Maria Garcia. All decried the hospital’s closing, but guaranteed a fight to save it. “This is our line in the sand. This is for every mom about to give birth, for every cancer patient fighting for their lives. This is for every young person walking through these streets, and this is for every worker who shows up each and every day doing more with less,” said Councilwoman Gym. “We’ve got your back.” Sanders put forth his own $20 billion emergency funding plan for hospitals like Hahnemann. It would allow localities to purchase the hospitals in their communities to keep them away from the “Wall Street vultures” as Sanders described them. In a last-ditch effort, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced that their administrations were prepared to spend $15 million and are asking for the federal government to match the amount to cover the gaps in care caused by Hahnemann’s closing. z

“This is not just a Philadelphia issue. It is not just a Vermont issue. It is a national issue.”

nd even though I have no way of knowing what will happen, I have no doubts that Puerto Ricans will not back down, will not surrender, will not rest until Rosselló resigns. In what is seen as a failed trick to remain in power, Rosselló resigned as president of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party but not as governor. He also announced he will not run for re-election next year. The unprecedented demonstrations began after almost 900 pages of leaked crass, homophobic, sexist text messages between the governor and 11 of his closest collabora-

tors, all men, were published on July 13. That these people even laughed at the victims of Hurricane Maria made clear the cesspools their souls really are. But the protests are not just about the disgusting chat messages. “It is a matter of life and death and, I believe, as many do, that is the beginning of something huge and groundbreaking unlike anything we have ever seen!” said Dulce Reyes Bonilla, a writer based in New York. “There's been so much despair and with this you get the sense of how this has been the last drop and the broad consensus that skirts partisan politics,” Reyes Bonilla added. “This might be about the call for Rosselló to resign, but it is the start of something more and it's unprecedented. After all they have been through, especially in the past few years and since the hurricanes, Puerto Ricans are not playing.” No, they are not. After 118 years of U.S. domination, with only despair and humiliation to show for it, it is now or never for the oldest colony in the world. z

f you have been wondering, "What are Democrats waiting for?" for Donald Trump's impeachment, know that you are not the only one. On Tuesday, and to the surprise of many, Democratic Representative of Texas, Al Green, introduced a document that states the need to start the process as soon as possible. Green argued that Trump "unfit to be president, unfit to represent the American values of decency and morality, respectability and civility, honesty and propriety, reputability and integrity.” The decision of the congressman was driven by the latest racist comments of the president against Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) in which he invited them to "go back to their countries," questioning the citizenship of four democratically elected people to the U.S. Congress.

Green seized the opportunity during the House session - scheduled to vote on a symbolic resolution against the President’s racist rhetoric - to expose the case of the White House's endogenous racism - from anti-immigrant policies to digital proselytism. “Donald John Trump has by his statement, brought the high office of the President of the United States in contempt, ridiculed, disgraced and disrepute,” continues Green. “(He) has sown seeds of discord among the people of the United States, has demonstrated that he is unfit to be president and has betrayed his trust as President of the United States to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. And has committed a high misdemeanor in office.” According to the Washington Post, the document introduced by Green "will force House Democrats to deal with the issue in the near term because of the privileged nature of the resolution." This implies that, under the rules of the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi - who has opposed impeachment against Trump from the beginning - must decide between trying to block Green's article and splitting the Party, referring it to the Judicial Committee of the House of Representatives to be considered or simply allow an immediate vote. The Post adds that Green is in the right to force a vote in a span of two legislative days.

Despite the internal pressure of the Party - where many have insisted that Green's option is the way forward - it is unlikely the Democratic leadership would actually reach the point of even voting in favor of starting pre-trial inquiries. "That will be decided by our leadership team," Pelosi said of Green's decision to introduce the document. The closeness of Robert Mueller's hearing before Congress about his investigation and evidence of obstruction of justice by Donald Trump is a critical issue for the Democratic majority. However, there is an alternative way. Garrett Epps, a professor of constitutional law at the University of Baltimore, wrote a column for The Atlantic where he suggests a slower but more productive route than impeachment. Epps recovers the historical episode in which William W. Belknap, secretary of war of President Ulysses S. Grant, became the only secretary of a cabinet to be impeached in the history of the United States. "If Pelosi won’t dare impeach Trump, perhaps she’ll deign to impeach his stooges," the professor writes. Be that as it may, how do we cope with a racist president in the meantime? z

According to EdBuild, predominantly white school districts receive $23 billion more than districts that serve mostly students of color. Due to this wide gap in funding, students of color are often at a disadvantage. As a way to address this crucial issue, The Taco Bell Foundation created the Live Más Scholarship. “We felt a need and a responsibility to provide education and support to those students.” To apply, students are required to submit a two-minute video describing what their unique passion is, and how they can use that passion to make a difference in the world. The scholarship has continued to grow each year since it started in 2016. This year, more than $4.6 million was awarded to a total of 531 students across the country, with award amounts ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 each. This is a $1.6 million increase from what was awarded last year, and a $3.5 million increase from the first year. More than half of the award recipients were students of color. “There’s a huge need for the financial commitment and assistance to attend post-secondary education,” said Bradbury. “We’re very open to supporting all studies of post-secondary education degrees.” This is what makes the availability of this kind of scholarship so important — students who may not be the best athlete or have the highest GPA or go to a school with

a lack of funding get the opportunity to be awarded a significant amount of money based on other qualities and skills.

MORE THAN A SCHOLARSHIP

In addition to providing a check, the Live Más Scholarship also creates an opportunity for the winners to get real-world experiences that allows them to practice their craft outside the classroom. “We’re really starting to pride ourselves in our ability to help students build their 21st century skills,” Bradbury said. Programs like the Taco Bell Foundation’s Summer Workshops give scholars the opportunity to network with both like-minded peers and professionals to help develop their personal and professional skills. “We bring students together for networking, mentorship, career readiness skills… those skills that we’re hearing students don’t feel prepared for today in terms of entering the workforce,” said Bradbury. sariamente encajan en esas categorías tradicionales", Jennifer Bradbury, directora de la Taco Bell Foundation, dijo.

n the minor leagues, baseball is laid bare, in all of its unpredictability and spaciousness. The modest stadiums, approximately 172 scattered throughout the United States, harbor something of the essence of the sport, unclouded by multimillion-dollar contracts and the glitz and glam of the majors. And what a minor league team lacks in stability and stars, as an endless rotation of prospects on their way up and veterans on their way out cycles through, it makes up for in plentiful array of costumed characters and an overwhelming amount of between-inning entertainment. The Reading Fightin Phils, the Philadelphia Phillies Double-A minor league affiliate, is no different. On a sweltering hot night on July 19, the cast of mascots includes the wacky hot dog vendor, a costumed Smartie man with fake rotting teeth who tries to intervene in a vegetable race (cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots), two people riding in a go-cart from right field down the first base line, a miscellaneous fluffy animal, and, last but certainly

Roberto Sanchez, the diversity outreach coordinator for the Reading Fightin Phils and sometime-Luchador, said JULY 24 - 31, 2019

that it all started back in 2017, when he got a call asking him, “How would you translate ‘Fightin Phils’ into Spanish?”.

FIGHTING THE GOOD LUCHA

Sanchez, Reading-bornand-raised, loves baseball with the passion of so many who have grown up living, eating, and breathing the sport. He played in high school and college, and ended up working as an intern for the Fightin Phils as a 22-year-old college graduate and “loved every single minute of it.” “I was enamored by the fact that the field was my backyard,” recalled Sanchez. His parents immigrated to the mainland from Puerto Rico

COVER before he was born, going first to Winchester, Virginia, where, Sanchez said, they were “the only two colored people.” Sanchez’s mother had a sister in Reading, and when they visited her they decided to move to the small city in Central PA, which even at that time had a considerable Puerto Rican community. The city’s Puerto Rican and other Latino communities have only grown since then, to the point where the city of roughly 88,000 is now close to 70% Latino. After his internship with the Phils, Sanchez stayed in the area and worked in banking for 16 years. In that span of time, he said that he has seen how area businesses have adapted and grown their efforts to reach out to bilingual and Spanish-speaking customers. “When I first started in banking, we didn’t have bilingual material to provide the customers. By the time I was done in 2016 with banking, every single bank but one had bilingual material they would give the customers. And every single branch that I would have gone to would have at least one bilingual person to communicate with customers that were Spanish speaking,” Sanchez said. But the Fightin Phils are behind banks and other businesses in establishing a strong connection with Latinos in the city. Sanchez estimates that even now, only 10-15% of attendees at most games are Latino, though he hopes to see that number increase. The day that Sanchez got the call asking him to translate the team’s name was the start of the Reading Fightin Phils involvement in the Copa de Diversión, a Minor League Baseball (MiLB) initiative launched in 2017. The nationwide campaign hopes to see more Latino fans engaged and coming out to the ballgame in MiLB parks throughout the country. Literally translating to the “fun cup,” the initiative aimed to inspire teams to develop and implement marketing plans that would appeal to Latinos. Participating teams can change their name to an alternate Spanish name, and many wear jerseys emblazoned with the new team name on select nights during the season while promoting merchandise and other related events. The initiative has already proved successful beyond the wildest dreams of its original architects in MiLB’s front office. With teams’ alternate egos ranging from the Coquís in Lehigh Valley, to the Margaritas of El Paso, to one of

PORTADA Sanchez’s favorites, the Flying Chanclas of San Antonio, the merchandise and associated events have resonated with local Latino communities and beyond. In 2018, the 33 participating teams generated a combined $U.S. 3.7 million in revenue and had a 12.5% attendance increase. The initiative now includes 72 teams during the 2019 season. In addition to increasing Latino engagement and attendance at games, another goal of the Copa is to work towards diversifying the front offices of professional baseball. For teams that wanted to partici-

pate in the Copa, they had to think about who in their front office was bilingual — and if they didn’t have someone, they had to hire them, as the Fightin Phils did with Sanchez. “This stadium is six, seven minutes away from the Main Street in Reading, which is Penn Street, there’s about 50 some thousand Latinos in this community, but the front office has lacked a bilingual person or someone from Latin descent,” Sanchez said. “Just me being named diversity outreach coordinator, I’ve had so many people reach out and say, ‘hey, how do we get involved,’ or ‘how do we get tickets to a game, how can we book a party at the stadium,’ that had either never been here or had no interest in setting some-

thing up at the stadium,” he noted, adding that the team’s outreach also includes translated Spanish-language pocket schedules at bodegas throughout the city and a website in Spanish. The Reading team, which first participated in the Copa in 2018, is wearing jerseys with their Spanish name, “Los Peleadores,” for five Friday home games throughout the 2019 season. Billed as “Fiesta Fridays,” the promotion also brings local Latin food vendors to the stadium and features announcements for the game in Spanish (courtesy of the one and only El Luchador). But it’s not just the minor leagues - the idea of engaging diverse communities has made it to the Show, as many Major League Baseball (MLB) teams are working to expand their markets and increase their connection with different communities. This is especially true for Latinos in the U.S., who, besides being the fastest-growing demographic in the country, are also a prime market for a sport in which now close to a third of the players are Latino. Kenny Johnson, the Philadelphia Phillies community engagement outreach coordinator, said that in his close to 10 years in the position, he has focused on showing up at local events and festivals, large and small, and other community sites throughout Philadelphia for what he says is “an initial handshake” with the Phillies organization. Last year, Johnson said the team donated more than 2,000 free tickets through the MLB Commissioner’s initiative to Philly or-

ganizations that serve the city’s Latino communities. Developing relationships with communities that might not find playing baseball or attending Phillies games to be as accessible due to limited resources is vital to the future of the sport itself, said Johnson - especially in light of what has been a sharp decline in the number of African-American players at the professional level since the 1990s. Johnson noted that programs like the MLB’s Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI) work to provide resources to African-American and Latino communities in cities that are interested in playing the sport but lack the necessary equipment. “I think that in order for baseball to be the national pastime, we have to be inclusive, we have to be diverse, and we have to make those efforts to get baseball out there to the communities in hopes that on the field will be reflective of those communities that make up the nation, and for our particular purposes, of Philadelphia,” he said.

‘A LOT OF PEOPLE’S PASTIME’

DeeDee Rodriguez and Alba Fernandez, both Reading residents, sat high up in the last row of the stands as the sun sank down behind the third base line on July 19, the penultimate Fiesta Friday of the season. The first game of a doubleheader had ended, and the players had only a few minutes after their victory to change from their regular jerseys into the red “Los Peleadores” uniforms that they would wear for the next match-up against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Rodriguez, who is the president of the local Puerto Rican Latin-Association, recalled sitting in those same stands as a young girl with her father, a Puerto Rican who is a complete ‘Phillie Phanatic,” she said with a laugh. “They make it fun here now. Way different from back in the day when I used to come here with my dad. You just sat here and watched the game. Now they got all this..activities and mascots,” she said. “They get you engaged,” agreed Fernandez, who, unlike Rodriguez, does not consider herself to be a baseball fan — but she said that she can still see how the

team has been working to better engage Latinos in Reading. Fernandez grew up in Reading from the age of 14, when she came from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, which, due to its geographic location, shares a lot culturally with the Caribbean islands of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic - including a profound love for baseball. She was familiar with the sport’s importance in the Caribbean region, and it made sense then that the minor league team would want to connect to the growing Latino market in Reading — one they realized they were missing out on. “Baseball is a sport that’s played in those countries, but they weren’t coming to see the players,” Fernandez said of the Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan communities in Reading. “You saw the players on the screen,” she said, gesturing to the jumbotron where some of the team’s Latino players introduced themselves in Spanish to kick off Fiesta Friday. “They were Venezuelans, Dominicans. So I think they needed to have that connection. Fernandez and Rodriguez both know Sanchez from childhood, and say that his work as the diversity outreach coordinator with the team has already had an impact; they both have noticed more interest in the Latino communities in coming to games. Rodriguez said that she believes that having Fiesta Fridays, where the game is announced in Spanish, “makes the Latinos more comfortable... to know that they at least understand something.” “What Robert is doing, I believe is excellent because he’s connecting the community to the game. So that gives it more interest, it’s more fun,” Fernandez said. “It’s not just an American [game], but also a game that’s enjoyed on the islands... everywhere. Latin America. Besides soccer, baseball is probably one of the sports that gets played the most,” she added. Rodriguez agreed. “[Baseball] is a lot of people’s pastime. A lot of people,” she said. z

Latinx is the largest minority in America, yet the land of the free often forgets to incorporate the many accomplishments of the Latinx community throughout history. For Leguizamo, his oneman show, “Latin History for Morons,” arose from a personal story, a result of his son being bullied because of his race. Instead of fighting with punches, Leguizamo helped his son fight with words. By giving his son Latinx heroes, Leguizamo gained insight into the often-overlooked history of his community. His captivating solo performance, on tour now, takes the audience on a journey through 3,000 years of Latin American history. Leguizamo highlights both the good and bad, the triumphs and failures. years to finally complete the script and to perform on Broadway. “I just tried to make it the most exciting fun evening and then the rest is history,” Leguizamo told AL DÍA in a phone interview on July 15. While some might see 3,000 years of history being told by one person as an exhausting endeavor, Leguizamo believes this brings him and the audience closer. “[It] feels like we're in a conversation together that this is just for us, this evening is just for the audience and me,” he said.

BAPTIZED INTO ACTING

Leguizamo developed a love for theater at an early age. A mind-blowing moment happened when he was 17. “My mom got me tickets for ‘American Buffalo’ to see Al Pacino… I sat in the front row, he was amazing! He spit all over me… I [felt] like I was baptized into acting,” Leguizamo said. For the actor, there is a serious transition between acting on stage and acting on television. “Being on stage you have to be like an athlete you have to be top of your game. In a TV series you have to be incredibly vulnerable and open,” he noted.

TRAGEDY AND COMEDY

"Latin History for Morons" wants to inform the audience in an entertaining and positive way. Yet, there are tragic events that unfold over 3,000 years that have to make an appearance. But that is also an integral part of the experience.

“The more people that learn and get educated about immigration issues, then we break this concept of stereotypes.” John Leguizamo

“[There are] moments I’m saying something really painful and they get so so quiet… until I speak again I keep that silence and we’re in a moment of silence together,” said Leguizamo. As for the future of the Latinx community, he hopes that there is more representation in politics and the government, more statues to celebrate the many Latinx icons, and greater awareness of the many achievements that Latinx have done throughout history. Leguizamo concluded his thoughts on the Latinx role in the U.S. with these words of encouragement: “We’re American and no one can kick us out — it’s our country too.”

ricana.

Este también es nuestro país". he Americans labelled it “the backyard” of the United States. Fractured and dislocated by history, South America still remains largely separated from the Northern part of the hemisphere, unable to bridge the language barrier, differences in culture, or exaggerated concerns about insecurity and political instability. Above all, this separation is a result of a lack of information on what the situation in the Southern hemisphere actually is. I was in Bogotá this past week, invited by the University I graduated from over three decades ago with my first degree in Journalism. During my visit, I had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Cecilia Maria Velez White, former Minister of Education in Colombia, and current President of my Alma - the Uni-

versity of Bogotá “Jorge Tadeo Lozano.” At present, close to 10,000 students attend my former school, coursing studies in ten different graduate and undergraduate programs, spread out over four different campuses— the main in Bogotá’s old city, in Chía, near the Colombian capital, and two more in the historic cities of Cartagena and Santa Marta, looking north over to the “Mediterranean of the Americas,” the Carribbean sea. In my conversation, I said to Dr. Velez White that I thought what was needed is a “bridge”, literally. Strong foundations have been laid on both sides of that sea that unite us and divide us,

and yet where all civilizations of the world have gathered. Capitalizing on the solid foundation built by the 60 million Latinos living in the United States today, institutions from the North, starting with the universities, could benefit greatly from studying the bountiful south and its enormous possibilities. After all, the European East and the Asian West have been already been sufficiently explored with academic programs of all kinds. South America, on the contrary, with its young and thriving population — double that of the US — plus solid educational institutions such as the Tadeo Lozano in Bogotá, is the next frontier for the institutions of higher education in the United States. Like the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) or the Philadelphia International Medicine (PMI), led by Jefferson and other Health institutions from our region, have discovered South America is a new business opportunity that is impossible to ignore any longer.z

ESPAÑOL

S
