EL PAÍS SPAIN THE UNCOMFORTABLE NEIGHBOR FOR NORTH AMERICA

Analyst Salvador Camarena wrote an article, published on June 18th, in which he discusses the state of relations between the United States and Mexico. He says: “Mexico has become for the United States the neighbor that one day asks for things, and the next day says no. And vice versa. In any issue of the complex agenda, examples of the fi ckle attitude of the current Mexican Government can be found, which has made the Southern Bravo country the uncomfortable neighbor of the North American power. [...] The problems of the agenda between the United States and Mexico grow almost by the week. During the week that is coming to an end, a new front was opened in the energy fi eld, already saturated with clashes and disagreements between the interests of the two countries”. El analista Salvador Camarena escribió un artículo, publicado este 18 de junio, en el cual plantea el estado de las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y México. Dice: “México se ha convertido para Estados Unidos en el vecino que un día le pide cosas, y al siguiente le dice que no. Y viceversa. En cualquier tema de la compleja agenda se pueden hallar ejemplos de la veleidosa actitud del actual gobierno mexicano, que ha hecho del país del sur del Bravo el vecino incómodo de la potencia norteamericana. (…) Los problemas de la agenda entre Estados Unidos y México crecen casi por semana. En la que está concluyendo se abrió un nuevo frente en el ámbito energético, ya de tiempo atrás saturado de choques y desavenencias entre los intereses de los dos países”.

CLARÍN ARGENTINA FISCAL POLICY MISTAKES

Economist Ricardo Arriazu wrote that in the U.S. “real infl ation was generated by fi scal and monetary policy mistakes in 2021, which exacerbated the (necessary) fi scal and monetary imbalances of 2020. The unnecessary March 2021 fi scal package raised the cumulative 12-month defi cit to nearly $4.2 trillion (compared to less than $1 trillion before the pandemic), while the Fed continued its bond purchases when they were no longer needed and kept the interest rate too low, which generated bubbles in asset markets. The combination of these e ects was refl ected in increases in domestic demand, higher wages [...] and higher real estate prices. Additionally, the rise in wages was boosted by the withdrawal from the labor market of more than two million people who decided not to work because they considered they were already ‘rich enough’. This situation originated in the rise of savings [...] and the increase in the value of their assets. The same situation occurred in the real estate market [...] as demand increased [...] without a corresponding increase in supply”. El economista Ricardo Arriazu escribió que en Estados Unidos “la verdadera infl ación se generó por errores de política fi scal y monetaria en 2021, que agravaron los desequilibrios fi scales y monetarios (necesarios) de 2020. El innecesario paquete fi scal de marzo de 2021 elevó el défi cit acumulado en doce meses a casi 4,2 billones (comparado con menos de 1 billón antes de la pandemia), al mismo tiempo que la Reserva Federal continuó con sus compras de bonos cuando ya no hacía falta y mantuvo la tasa de interés demasiado baja, lo que generó burbujas en los mercados de activos. La combinación de estos efectos se refl ejó en incrementos de la demanda interna, en la suba de los salarios (…) y en la suba del precio de los inmuebles. Adicionalmente, la suba de los salarios fue potenciada por el retiro del mercado laboral de más de dos millones de personas que decidieron no trabajar por considerar que ya eran ‘sufi cientemente ricos’. Esta situación se originó en la suba de los ahorros (…)y la suba en el valor de sus activos. La misma situación se dio en el mercado inmobiliario (…) al incrementarse la demanda (…) sin una correspondiente suba de la oferta”.

EL UNIVERSAL MEXICO WHAT ABOUT THE RIGHTS OF “UNACCOMPANIED” MIGRANT CHILDREN?

Enriqueta Cabrera’s article focuses on migrant children moving towards the Mexican border with the United States: “It must be very serious what is happening in the places of origin from where thousands of ‘unaccompanied’ children come from to cross Mexican territory and reach the United States [...] Child and adolescent migration is constantly increasing, considering that, according to statistics from the US Border Patrol, the number of girls and boys arriving alone in that country has multiplied more than fi ve times between October 2017 and April 2022. From a fi gure of more than 2 thousand ‘encounters’ per month, the latest data records more than 12 thousand cases. They travel alone, far from their families and loved ones. They will have to cross Mexico to reach the United States, where a relative may live. The days become longer and bitter… their vulnerability grows, with thirst, tiredness and hunger [...] What if they do not fi nd any relatives? For more than a few, a kind of reclusion and the most traumatic of uncertainties await them”. El artículo de Enriqueta Cabrera se centra en los niños migrantes que se mueven hacia la frontera de México con Estados Unidos: “Muy grave debe ser lo que ocurre en los lugares de origen de donde provienen miles de niños ‘no acompañados’ que cruzan territorio mexicano para llegar a Estados Unidos (…) La migración infantil y de adolescentes no deja de crecer, si se considera que, conforme a la estadística de la Patrulla Fronteriza de Estados Unidos, el número de niñas y niños que arriban solos a ese país se ha multiplicado más de cinco veces entre octubre de 2017 y abril de 2022. De una cifra superior a los 2 mil ‘encuentros’ mensuales: los últimos datos registran más de 12 mil casos. Viajan en solitario, lejos de sus familias y seres queridos. Tendrán que cruzar México para llegar a Estados Unidos, donde posiblemente viva algún pariente. Los días se vuelven larguísimos, amargos, crece su vulnerabilidad, con la sed, cansancio, hambre. (…) ¿Y si no encuentran a ningún pariente? A no pocos les esperará una especie de reclusión y la más traumática de las incertidumbres”.

LA NACIÓN COSTA RICA TRUMP’S GREAT CONSPIRACY

In the editorial of June 18th, this Costa Rican media points out that “on June 30th last year, after Republican senators blocked the establishment of an independent bipartisan commission to investigate the assault against the Capitol [...] the House of Representatives decided to form a special committee to undertake the mission. [...] The main task entrusted by the resolution that set it in motion was to inquire into “the facts, circumstances and causes related” to that “domestic terrorist assault”, as well as the role of Donald Trump and a series of collaborators, in order for him to remain in o ce despite the clear electoral defeat su ered against Joe Biden. [...] the committee began on Thursday 9th, this month, a series of hearings [...]. The three held so far have highlighted what we already knew, but had not been documented with such clarity and drama: the existence of a perverse conspiracy orchestrated by Trump since before the November 2020 elections to refuse to accept his eventual defeat and do everything possible to prevent the certifi cation of Biden’s triumph, which fi nally occurred cogently”. En el editorial del 18 de junio, este medio costarricense señala que “el 30 de junio del pasado año, luego de que los senadores republicanos bloquearon el establecimiento de una comisión bipartidista independiente para investigar el asalto contra el Capitolio (…)la Cámara de Representantes decidió formar un comité especial para emprender la tarea. (…) La principal tarea encomendada por la resolución que lo echó a andar fue indagar en “los hechos, circunstancias y causas relacionados” con ese “asalto terrorista doméstico”, así como el papel de Donald Trump y una serie de colaboradores, para que este se mantuviera en la presidencia a pesar de la clara derrota electoral sufrida ante Joe Biden. (…) el comité comenzó el jueves 9 de este mes una serie de audiencias (…). Las tres realizadas hasta ahora han puesto en evidencia lo que ya sabíamos, pero no había sido documentado con tanta claridad y dramatismo: la existencia de una perversa conspiración orquestada por Trump desde antes de las elecciones de noviembre del 2020 para negarse a aceptar su eventual derrota y hacer todo lo posible por impedir que se certifi cara el triunfo de Biden, que fi nalmente se produjo de manera contundente”.
