One year ago today, on June 23, 2020, there were 35,060 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the U.S. along with

The country was leading the world in both categories (something it still does to this day), but there was also still no end in sight to the pandemic that shut the world down.

A little less than a year later, the script is flipped.

New York state celebrated getting 70% of its adult population one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine with fireworks.

The weeklong celebration will also showcase how important arts and culture is to Philadelphia communities and what it means for this area to continue to not only thrive, but survive.

“Over the past year, The Office of Council Member Thomas has been working side by side with the members of the arts community,” ACRW officials said. “After the impressive advocacy during the 2020-2021 budget cycle, Thomas’ office was able to see just how much this community means to the fabric of Philadelphia, and even more so how it’s members were already fighting for survival before the pandemic.” z

Last weekend, La Esperanza hosted a gardening event where members of the Center for Aquatic Sciences volunteered and brought different insects to showcase. Children who came to the event also made kites.

Their event, the Juneteenth Microgreen Micro took place on June 19 at 835 North Sixth Street between 10 a.m. and noon. The event gave a wide overview on how to grow microgreens.

Participating locals left with supplies to get them on the right track to growing their own microgreens.

As more events are in the works, Santiago also plans on building greenhouses in the upcoming future. She also plans on adding a third community garden soon. z

Los participantes se irán a casa con suministros para que puedan cultivar correctamente sus propios microvegetales.

That was 19-year-old Reese Broadwater, who took the mic during the event to discuss what he felt were the core issues regarding lack of accountability in law enforcement. He said things don’t happen on an individual level — there are roots.

“This is the first time I’ve ever done an event such as this, so even the things that I thought I knew — I’ve learned more. When I came here, I learned about the MOVE bombing of West Philadelphia, I never even knew about that,” Broadwater told AL DÍA.

He’s a recent graduate and has lived in the Kensington community for 12 years. He expressed a particular interest in the disparities within education that determine the likelihood of one’s success.

While the full report is not yet available, the youth organizing the event provided attendees with a list of recommendations across four categories.

Categories included Investment, Community and Police, Training, and Accountability measures for Police.

Las palabras son de Reese Broadwater, de 19 años, quien tomó el micrófono durante el evento para exponer que para él el problema central es la falta de responsabilidad por parte de las fuerzas del orden. Dijo que las cosas no suceden a nivel individual, que hay raíces.

“Esta es la primera vez que asisto a un evento así, donde incluso he aprendido más sobre cosas que pensé que ya sabía. Cuando vine aquí, me enteré del atentado de MOVE en el oeste de Filadelfia, ni siquiera me había enterado de eso ”, dijo Broadwater a AL DÍA.

Broadwater acaba de graduarse y lleva 12 años viviendo en la comunidad de Kensington. Expresó un interés particular en las disparidades dentro de la educación que determinan la probabilidad de éxito en el futuro.
