o you remember the outrage that ensued when it was revealed that migrant children were defending themselves in immigration courts? This came after discovering they were also detained and separated from their parents along the southern border. The result was the same - outrage. The first report broke in June 2018 and told the story of a three-year-old girl climbing on a table in the middle of her own hearing, oblivious to the outcome and unable to grasp its ramifications. “It really highlighted the absurdity of what we’re doing with these kids,” said Lindsey Toczylowski, executive director of the Immigrant Defenders Law Center in Los Angeles. ing themselves in court showed a fatal flaw in the immigration legal system that continues today — and existed long before President Donald Trump and his beloved wall.
A LONG HISTORY
The precedent began in 1963 with the passage of Gideon v. Wainwright. The landmark Supreme Court case ruled that anyone charged with a criminal offense too poor to afford a lawyer must be provided an attorney by the state. In short, it created the public defender system. But Gideon v. Wainwright only pertains to criminal cases, not civil ones. Criminal procedures involve offenses against the public, while civil suits cover offenses against an individual, or other private party. Immigration procedures are civil, meaning those appearing in immigration court do not have the right to an attorney or counsel. It means immigrants who commit crimes while on U.S. soil have more access to legal counsel than those who are law abiding after crossing the border. The only way to guarantee representation is if the immigrant can afford it, but finding reliable avenues can be difficult, especially in a detention center with strict meeting times and scarce resources for the detained. There are many nonprofit law organizations across the country that operate pro bono or at reduced prices, but the need far outpaces the supply.
A GROWING MOVEMENT
In response to this need, Robert Katzmann, a judge in the U.S. Second Court of Appeals in New York initiated a study of the lack of representation for immigrants in 2010. The results of the study spawned the Immigration Justice Corps, one of the first organizations to offer free representation for immigrants in court. It uses grants from the government and private sector to fund its work. It began a movement across the country that over the last decade has expanded to six states that dedicate a portion of tax dollars to immigrant legal representation. It’s a sign of progress, but until the law includes a clearer definition of immigration procedures, the lack of access to representation will continue for those who need it most. ❚

Yet, they did not utter one single word about the cruel conditions at the detention camps. “Do us all a favor and spend just a few minutes learning some actual history. Six million Jews were ex-

You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this,” said a sanctimonious Liz Cheney, the third-ranking Republican in the House, in a tweet addressed to AOC. But as someone said in another tweet, “If you have no problem with using the word ‘invasion’ to describe people asking for asylum, you have no moral authority to object to the phrase ‘concentration camp’ to describe those same people being detained in inhumane conditions.” “You know what is ‘offensive?’” another reader said. “Violating the Geneva Conventions, U.S. and international law by illegally imprisoning asylum seekers, forcibly separating children from their families, locking humans in dog kennels, forcing humans to sleep on gravel and cold concrete floors, with only foil blankets, and no access to soap or toothbrushes. At a naturalization ceremony on June 11, Symbol Lai, deputy officer for the Office of Immigrant Affairs, spoke to the obstacles that the 51 new inductees had overcome. “Today marks the end of a very long and complicated and sometimes good, sometimes not good, sometimes difficult journey of resettling in the United States,” said Lai. Lai’s words echoed in the drum beats of Al-Bustan group, who rang in the new citizens with their sounds from the Middle East, showing no matter how far immigrants have traveled to be here, they carry their roots. Held at the Free Library of Philadelphia, the ceremony, the final step in naturalizing, was part of Immigrant Heritage Month, which honors New Americans and their contributions to the country. It includes the recitation of the Oath of Allegiance when New Americans are officially inducted, an often triumphant moment. Six days a week, United States Citizen
and Immigration Services inducts 60 to 70 new citizens. Though the event is celebratory, for many New Americans, the path to citizenship has not always been easy.
CHALLENGES FACED IN NATURALIZING
Amar Bessedik came from Algeria in 2010, to study and to escape political upheaval in the country; at the ceremony, he noted his appreciation of American values of justice and democracy. After arriving in the U.S., his barrier to naturalizing was learning English. “I couldn't understand the accents, my vocabulary was very limited, I couldn't even ask for ‘Are you hiring?’... I didn't know what the word hiring is,” said Bessedik. Bessedik took ESL classes in community college before getting his B.A. in computer science, which helped him pass the required English test that includes reading, writing and speaking. The Free Library of Philadelphia hosts ESL courses and English roundtable discussions for immigrants like Bessedik to practice their English and to reduce social isolation they often feel.

“Learning a language in general, it's like learning the culture of a country and you can maybe recognize yourself among people if you understand them and they understand you it's much easier,” Bessedik said. For Diana Jimenez, 24, her barrier in the naturalization process was financial. When she was eight, her family was selected in a visa lottery program, which allowed her, her sister, and mother to come to the United States from Peru. Her sister and mother first went through the naturalization process when she was 18. Jimenez wanted to become a citizen prior to attending medical school and becoming a doctor; but due to the cost of applying for naturalization — $725 — she had waited several years to start going through the process. “The cost was definitely prohibi-

tive... I waited a bit until I could save up money to apply,” she said.
TRIUMPHS NONETHELESS
For each immigrant who wants to become a naturalized citizen, they have their own challenges, but the sentiment for those who complete the process is one of hope. On June 11, Bessedik became part of the American framework, and now has the ability to hold office, vote, and travel without a visa. He hopes to one day bring his family to the United States to join him and his wife, and sees becoming a citizen as “ a great achievement.” For Jimenez, becoming a citizen made her proud of her family. “It makes me proud of everything we have endured and accomplished,” Jimenez said. “A long process, so it's the goal, the finish line.” ❚

HOW CAN WE PROTECT OURSELVES?
According to United We Dream, one of the most important immigrant support and defense organizations, we must take some emergency measures to prevent deportation: 1. First of all: ICE lies. Some frequent strategies of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency are to invite us to follow them to their offices, to the facilities of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), or to meet with them to have a coffee. United We Dream recommends not to accept the requests. 2. Always keep calm. 3. Do not open the door. 4. Express verbally that they are not authorized to enter your home or register your belongings. Agents are required to file a search or arrest warrant.

5. Do not answer questions or sign documents, and ask first to speak with a lawyer or a family member. 6. Create a plan in advance with your support network (friends, family). Although state governments like New York, California and Pennsylvania have decided to side with immigrants, sometimes it’s better to take safety measures. Immigration lawyer Alex Gávez recommends having an action plan that includes: memorizing phone numbers, organizing an envelope with important information, always having copies of fines, crimes, etc., and always having on hand the number of a lawyer. It’s important to keep in mind that this doesn’t define us. We must remember that the president's announcement coincided with his reelection campaign kick-off and that this is just another political strategy to intimidate us while reaping votes from the other side. ❚

oving from one country to another can be a very intimidating experience. Learning a new language, meeting new people, and adjusting to an entirely distinct lifestyle are just some of the challenges immigrants endure while acclimating to a new country. Since its founding in 2003, the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians has served as a valuable resource for immigrants. It has served over 17,000 people from over 150 countries around the world in its goal to accelerate immigrant integration and economic advancement in the U.S. To better accomplish its mission, the Welcoming Center launched a program two years ago, called the Immigrant Leadership Institute. The five-month session is aimed to help immigrants gain the skills, knowledge, and tools necessary to engage in the city’s civic life, and integrate into American culture.

LEADERS Each cohort consists of 25 to 30 participants, working in teams of five or six to implement certain projects. Each participant attends three hours of training twice a month. During the final month of each cohort, program participants host public events that put to practice the tools they learn throughout the program.
COMBATTING EXISTING BARRIERS
June marked the final full month for the current cohort of participants in the Immigrant Leadership Institute. The participants held five separate public events throughout the month, each one highlighting the barriers they faced, or are facing, upon their arrival to the United States. These barriers include difficulties networking, and integrating healthily into American society; developing the tools to integrate and succeed into the American economy; and dealing with social isolation. Each event functioned as a way to allow the cohorts to direct a discussion surrounding these issues, to talk about them and find ways to help address challenges. Manuel Portillo, director of the program, said the events often go well “because they show the flavor of the people” and participants and attendees both “get an opportunity to interact.” The lack of opportunity or confidence to interact with others can be detrimental to a person’s transition to the country, something Portillo learned both by working with immigrants, and looking back

at his own experiences when he initially came to the U.S. “What we noticed is that the need to integrate socially can be understood as a set of emotions,” said Portillo. “I noticed that social integration is equivalent to emotional survival, not just the physical.” These barriers can be addressed most effectively by a collective effort, between both immigrants and U.S.born citizens.
WHAT MAKES A LEADER?
In addition to gaining the skills to successfully integrate into the U.S., the Immigrant Leadership Institute also serves as a way to build immigrant leaders. “Our concept of leadership is really something that begins in the individual,” said Portillo, adding that the idea of leadership has much to do with self-interest and the motivation to meet specific needs. “Leadership emerges out of the struggle to fulfill those needs,” he added. “And our role is really to cultivate that, to guide it.” Resources like the Welcoming Center hold value, given that immigrants comprise 15 % of the city’s population. For many immigrants, they already bring with them invaluable knowledge and leadership skills. The importance of the Immigrant Leadership Institute lies in its ability to strengthen those qualities, refine them into skills, and provide an avenue for new immigrants to become more engaged in civic life. ❚

To this day, memories of what that experience meant to him at such a young age elude him. “It’s hard for me to go back on it, except the first words I learned were ‘I don’t speak English,” he recounted with laughter in a recent conversation with AL DÍA. “As a kid you want to play ball, go to school, yell and scream,” Yabor explained. “You don’t realize that you have all of these opportunities here.” But Yabor would grow up to make the very best of the opportunities he was provided by this country. While in school at Villanova University, he began delivering building and janitorial supplies to local businesses out of his own car. Three years later, Yabor was running a multi-million dollar enterprise called 503 Corporation. He purchased a 10,000 square foot facility to house the operation in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia. After establishing himself as an entrepreneur, Yabor took on a leadership role at the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GPHCC). He saw it as a way to help open pathways for more Latino entrepreneurs and business owners in the city to thrive. “When I joined, the Chamber was falling apart and very disorganized,” Yabor told AL DÍA. Together with the six other board members at the time, Yabor helped the Chamber pay off debts that it owed. He appointed new leadership and set the GPHCC on track to become what it is today:

In each new immigrant, Yabor sees a future taxpayer, citizen, and creator. Closing the country’s borders is contradictory to the image of itself that the United States projects to the outside world as a land of freedom and opportunity, according to Yabor. “We try to proclaim that all through the world, yet we blame the people who we recruit by doing it,” he said. “Don’t preach and then blame the people for accepting the words that just came right out of your mouth.” Despite this sentiment, Yabor remains proud of both his Cuban and American identity. The now retired entrepreneur reflects back with profound gratitude for the opportunities he has had in his life, opportunities only possible in a country like the United States of America. ❚

o say it was just a change of scenery is putting it lightly. When Margaret Chin first came to the U.S. in the 1960s, it was a shock. As a 17-year-old coming from bustling Hong Kong, what Chin found in Philadelphia’s Chinatown was a quiet stretch of city with a small Chinese population. “I came from Hong Kong where it’s always jam-packed,” said Chin. “When I came here, there was absolutely no one in the street.” For her parents, the move was difficult. Taking a family of five 13,000 miles wasn’t easy. “It was definitely a hardship for them,” said Chin. The family moved to Chinatown with relatives’ help. At the time, the neighborhood was at a crossroads in its relationship with Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Chin pursued an education degree at Temple University. When she graduated, she taught English to children at Holy Redeemer Church in Chinatown. Chin’s next classroom experience took her a world away from Chinatown to North Philadelphia. She spent 18 years there, learning a lot from students and residents alike.

Her experiences in North Philadelphia and Chinatown prepared Chin well for the next stage of her career. Her new job was in administration at the Philadelphia School District. “We were at a stage where we constantly asked: What can we do better for the children?” Said Chin. Chin’s answer came in the form of vastly improving and pioneering new ESL curriculum. As a Chinese immigrant, Chin knew all about the difficulty of living in the U.S. and not knowing English. She also implemented many cultural exchange programs and expanded translation services to include more languages. Under Chin’s influence, the district better served its diverse community and provided a level of comfort for students still learning English. The comfort cultivated an environment of

learning and acceptance of the kind that Chin still feels when she’s in Chinatown, hearing her native Cantonese. “I feel like I’m at home,” she said. After 20 years in administration, Chin retired for good.

Now, she’s back to where it all began in Chinatown, as a board member for the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation. The organization formed when she first moved to the neighborhood in the 1960s because of a battle with planners over the Vine Street Expressway. The roadway was built and Chinatown cut in two, but now Chin wants to reconnect the neighborhood through CRANE. CRANE will be Chinatown’s first real community center. It is the crowning achievement for an immigrant community with more than 100 years of history in Philadelphia “Immigrants,” said Chin, “are what make America rich.” ❚

Her plan is to take a five-month course at the Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential (Glenside, PA), and use the knowledge to help Irish children. As often happens, life had other plans. The cure Anne was hoping to find ended up being nothing but “a lot of PR.” “The kids were improving for the resources their programs were getting, for all the publicity, but it wasn't a cure,” she said. But her plans of going back home changed when she fell in love with the man who became her husband.

Deciding to make the U.S. her permanent resident wasn't easy. “I didn't have a green card when I came here. To get the information and the help to get a green card was quite a struggle,” said O’Callaghan. On top of that, she wasn't allowed to be a physical therapist for not being a PA graduate. O'Callaghan needed to take and pass an exam before being able to practice in the state. Between the paperwork, calls, and waiting periods, it would take 3 years for Anne to be able to be licensed in Pennsylvania. In the meantime, the University of Pennsylvania offered her a physical therapy teaching spot. “I was good enough to teach their students, but not good enough to take the licensing exam,” she said. Then, in 1999, O’Callaghan confronted the toll immigration was taking in the Irish-American community. After a couple of young irish students had been deported from Upper Darby, the community was in need of assistance. O'Callaghan decided to volunteer at a “small Irish immigration center” called Philadelphia Immigration Center. Despite it being a center serving the Irish population, people from other backgrounds started to come with all kinds of concerns and problems. Anne didn't believe the center was in a position to be helpful, “because they were set up

to help the Irish community and their issues had a lot to do with Irish passports”, she explained. In 2000-2001, with no protocol on how to handle the situation, O'Callaghan began to help. She realized that many of the immigrants struggled not just with adapting to a new country, but also with language, enrolling kids in school, visas and becoming legal. Two years later, she helped run a study that showed immigrant services in the area were not set up to help immigrants start small businesses or to support non-refugees in finding jobs. With that in mind, O'Callaghan got some funding and started the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians to provide assistance, information and resources to immigrants, including: letting people know where they can find English classes, how to become citizens, helping them start a new business and helping people who are work authorized find jobs. They opened March 3, 2003. “I was only responding to a need (...) I was just putting one food in front of the other. Here is the problem, let's find a solution,” O’Callaghan said. She didn't imagine the impact. She wanted the information to be easily available, but never thought it would turn into an organization worth $2 million a year, that has helped nearly 2,000 people find jobs. ❚

traditional method of transportation where she grew up. But she also remembers that the jobs in her country were very scarce, and unemployment in her hometown continues to be high to this day. De Oliveira’s mother completed school and was an elementary school teacher prior to immigrating to the U.S. Her father was one of six children and had to drop out of school at an early age to attend to his father’s business and provide for their family. De Oliviera and her family immigrated to the United States when she was only six years old. When she immigrated to the U.S. at the age of six in Feb. 2004, De Oliveira was not able to enroll in school right away. Instead, she had to wait until the following September in order to attend, which resulted in her falling one year behind. While attending school, she faced more challenges. “I was bullied for not knowing the language,” De Oliveira said. To learn the English language, she enrolled in the ESOL program for six months and became fluent.

However, De Oliveria, a DACA recipient, faced additional bumps in the road while applying to colleges. With the help of her high school, she was able to find a college that was the right fit for her and also mirrored De Oliveira’s values and supported DACA students. De Oliveira acknowledged that DACA recipients often have fewer resources available to them than students who are U.S. citizens. Nonetheless, De Oliveira has managed to make it to her senior year of college, and honor her family for their sacrifices through the years. De Oliveira is expected to graduate in Dec. of 2019, a semester earlier than the rest of her class. “I am a product of their migration and their sacrifices, and that is something I will always be proud of,” De Oliveira said. There are many students like De Oliveira who have similar stories or are going through this challenge along with their families. People in developing countries are fleeing their homelands and searching for better opportunities in the United States — and the road to a better life remains difficult when seeking higher education as an immigrant in the country. ❚

can’t describe how I feel. The I forgot how it felt to run for my life. To run until you got to safety. The last time I felt that ice cold fear, I was five years old and crossing the border between Mexico and the United States. Recently, I felt that fear again. After a long day at work, I had arrived home by train. The only street to get to the parking lot where I left my car that morning was flooded. My only option was to cross the train tracks and risk that the train might come at any moment. And that is when it happened. The flashbacks. Flashes of my mother, my siblings and myself crossing the border in 1999, because my father wanted us close a timing that he still regrets to this day. He had applied for our residency a few years back and during that process,

It was the last week of December 1998. We packed as light as possible – leaving everything behind in our home in Toluca, Mexico. The next thing I remember, I was in a very small house in the state of Sonora, a border town with Arizona. We celebrated New Year’s trying to chase a dream. Innocently, I thought of this as a little excursion that would end with a happy reunion with my father. I did not understand the consequences of the trip until we faced three days of failed attempts to cross. The first two days of our attempts, we got caught and taken into a detention center where they separated men and women, but

the children remained with their mothers. The last day, which seemed like the longest of my life, knowing that we might fail again, we left late at night. We walked a different path, which might have been through some sewers if my memory does not fail me. I struggled to keep up with the adults; I was scared I would be left behind. Then, just like that, we reached a highway. All I remember hearing was ------- “RUN!” We ran as fast as we could across the busy road. I was blinded by bright headlights. All of a sudden, I found myself face down on the pavement, as I tripped and fell on my stomach. Gasping for air, I got up and forgot the pain, just so I could keep on running. The concept and name were inspired by the Junto Club, a social club founded in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin and a group of his friends who used to meet there in the evenings to discuss politics, philosophy and morality. ing an atmosphere where guests are invited to leisurely sip, share, and spend time over a meal together.” The American concept is a distinct change from the French cuisine the hotel’s restaurant used to offer. “French was not working in my opinion,” said Chef Patrick D’Amico. “We are here in historic Old City, which is perfect for American cuisine.” In that vein, there are classic American dishes like the Benjamin Burger (a custom blend of Beef, Lettuce, Tomato, American Cheese, Red Onion, Brioche Roll) and the Homespun (a Philly Cheese Steak, Chopped Beef, Onions, American Cheese, Philly Roll), but Chef D’Amico notes that American food encompasses much more than these stereotypical dishes.

“Some people think that American food is just hamburgers,” said Chef D’Amico. “But it’s really a blend of cultures from all around the world. There’s a lot of variety.” Examples of Franklin Social’s more inventive offerings include the Tuna Carpaccio (Cara Cara Orange, Fresno Chile, EVOO & Sea Salt), the Maple-Bourbon Glazed Pork Belly (served with Breakfast Radishes, Orange & Frisee Salad) and the Pan Seared Crab Cake (served with Lime Butter Sauce, Carrot-Apple Slaw, Fried Potato Sticks, Chili Oil). The Crab Cake is bound together with shrimp mousse instead of the traditional mayonnaise and breadcrumbs. The menu will rotate depending on the time of year to include the freshest produce from the surrounding region. “We plan to change things up with the season,” said Chef D’Amico. “Right now we have fresh cantaloupe and chile peppers.” Behind D’Amico’s culinary decisions are multiple decades of restaurant experience as the chef at many high-end restaurants, such as Positano and the Hotel Du-

pont in Wilmington. He also holds a degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America. But his passion for food began when he was just a kid. “My cooking career started when I was 11 years old,” explained Chef D’Amico. PURPOSE AND VALUES IN BUSINESS
T
oday’s economy is demanding for business leaders to command uncommon abilities. Not so much that one of reading financial statements well, or that other of spelling out their entrepreneurial dream into a dry business plan, good enough to convince bankers— but not so much to communicate to their fellow workers the purpose, the core values and the culture of their company. Like global entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson puts it, in the context of today’s high demand for the best talents possible, every single worker —the very people who can make or break organizations— must be seen just as volunteers. Volunteers who are free to walk away, or hang around a place of work —no matter how well paid and glamorous it may be— not because of that initial promise of competitive compensation, but only, in the long term, if they are entirely convinced that is the best spot to develop themselves into better human beings. Everybody is a volunteer and, therefore, it is on the leader’s shoulders to explain why it is important to stick together and carry out a common purpose. One that is way higher than our own individual aspirations for comfort, pleasure or job security. When a business leader finally arrives at the point when he or she can, at last, sit down and write the purpose statement of the company, and also craft the critical “core values” of the organization, and, all of a sudden, that copy describing the company’s culture starts flowing naturally, as a thread tying everything together, it may be a good sign that, perhaps, that business leader may have an organization, although still on paper, eventually capable of making a contribution to the world, always with a new solution to others. The founders of today’s companies must set out to convince people —almost as it they were modern preachers— to be investors, be

their co-workers, or be their first customers. Convince them that there is a horizon worth pursuing together, a future of years ahead where there will be solutions to problems, prosperity, and, eventually, profits to self sustain the operation. I applaud those who dare, those courageous enough to overcome their fears, and, as the pioneers did, sail away, honest and light, ready to run the race, sometimes burning the candle on both ends, if necessary, on some days, just to never be defeated in the midst of the old and ongoing battle: To keep the P&L sheet “in the black” and the dream alive.❚

Los fundadores de las compañía de hoy deben salir a reclutar conversos —casi como si fueran predicadores modernos— ya sean inversionistas, colegas en el trabajo, o sus primeros clientes. Convencerlos de que hay un horizonte hacia el que vale la pena viajar juntos, con un futuro de años adelante en que habrá soluciones a los problemas actuales, prosperidad, y, eventualmente, ganancias que puedan sostener indefinidamente la operación. Aplaudo a aquellos que se atreven, los y las valientes que superan sus terrores recónditos, y que, como lo hicieron los pioneros, parten con su nave, honesta y ligera, listo para unirse a la carrera, algunas veces amaneciendo en el esfuerzo, solo para no ser derrotados en la vieja y persistente batalla: Conservar la planilla de “Ganancias y Pérdidas” “in the black”, y el sueño aún al rojo vivo..❚
