ara Edwin Mayorga y los jóvenes latinos que forman el equipo de “Education in Our Barrios” (Educación en nuestros barrios) en Filadelfia, el aprendizaje empieza en casa, en el
“barrio”. “El proyecto se basa en la idea de que nuestras comunidades, y la gente joven en particular, están en posesión de un conocimiento relevante. Nunca son una pizarra en blanco cuando llegan a clase”, dijo Mayorga, profesor asistente de estudios educacionales en Swarthmore College. Mayorga fue el primero en impulsar el proyecto Education in Our Barrios en el East Harlem en 2013, mientras terminaba su doctorado en educación urbana en la City University de Nueva York. El objetivo de este proyecto de investigación participativa, explicó Mayorga, es crear una conexión entre el yo y la comunidad, permitiendo cuesta entre jóvenes latinos entre 16 y 24 años que los estudiantes “identifiquen su propia iden- con el objetivo de explorar el estado de su salud tidad y relación con la historia”. la preparación para la universidad y la orientación profesional. Actualmente, el grupo ayuda a estudiantes de secundaria - incluyendo estudiantes nacidos en EE. UU., documentados e indocumentados - a llevar el proceso de aplicación a la universidad, buscar oportunidades de ayuda financiera y realizar visitas a campus universitario. Mayorga espera que en el futuro el programa se expanda y continúe construyendo puentes entre esta “especie de división existente entre las comunidades latinas del norte y del sur” de Filadelfia, una realidad que él lleva constatando desde que llegó a la ciudad desde Nueva York, en 2014. Aunque el programa es relativamente nuevo, ya ha logrado un extenso impacto, dijo Mayorga, describiendo cómo algunos de los jóvenes que han participado en el programa durante los últimos tres años han regresado al proyecto como mentores y son capaces de “aprovechar y potenciar lo que ellos saben para enseñar a la siguiente generación de jóvenes. “Para mi es algo muy vivificante”, concluyó. ■

Legalización de la marihuana: ¿una cuestión de hechos y de fe? Los participantes de un foro público convocado recientemente en una iglesia en las afueras de Filadelfia discutieron el impacto de la despenalización de la marihuana en la comunidad negra.

urante un interesante foro público la semana pasada, un fiscal del condado, un guardián de la prisión y dos pastores defendieron sus posturas sobre la marihuana. Posturas que resultaron claramente opuestas a las que se esperarían para personas con sus puestos. ace tan sólo días, el presidente Trump decidía imponer nuevas tarifas al hierro y el acero, desencadenando el preámbulo de una guerra comercial contra aliados como la Comunidad Europea y China. El mal uso de los adjetivos, el ataque constante a sus detractores y su imposibilidad para asumir responsabilidad caen perfectamente en el cuadro de una persona cuya agresividad quema puentes a una velocidad diaria. El aclamado periodista mexicano-estadounidense Jorge Ramos conversó con AL DÍA News sobre inmigración, los Dreamers y el futuro del español en los medios.

or momentos, todavía no parece real. Por momentos, se hace difícil creer que en un país como Estados Unidos, construido por inmigrantes, casi 63 millones de personas votaron por Donald Trump en las elecciones presidenciales de 2016, poniendo en el poder a un hombre que abanderó una campaña electoral saturada de propaganda y discursos anti-inmigración. Por momentos, se hace difícil creer el racismo y el odio que salen de la boca del presidente, desde llamar a los mexicanos criminales y violadores al inicio de su campaña, a intentar vetar la entrada de ciudadanos de países musulmanes a Estados Unidos o referirse a Haití y a algunos países africanos como “países de mierda”, como hizo hace dos meses. Por momentos, se hace difícil creer que muchos americanos continúan defendiendo y justificando las actuaciones de este hombre, y que Trump siga teniendo tanto apoyo en todo el país. Pero lo cierto es que lo sigue teniendo, y esta realidad no puede ser ignorada. Es algo que el aclamado periodista mexico-estadounidense y veterano presentador de Univisión, Jorge Ramos, entendió desde el primer momento en que Trump puso un pie en la política. Para los que no estén familiarizados con los medios en español, quizás recuerden a Ramos por su cruce de palabras con el entonces candidato Trump en Dubuque, Iowa, en agosto de 2015, pues originó numerosos titulares. Durante una rueda de prensa, Ramos interrumpió a Trump para preguntarle sobre su intención de deportar a 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados y construir un muro de 1.900 millas de longitud a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. En respuesta, Trump ordenó expulsar a Ramos de la sala. Entonces, segundos después de haber sido empujado fuera de la sala por un guardia de seguridad, un seguidor del actual presidente se encaró a Ramos, espetándole: “Váyase de mi país”. Ese momento, y todas las emociones que le generaron después, sirvieron a Ramos de fundamento para escribir su décimotercer y más reciente libro: Extranjero: el reto de ser un inmigrante latino en la era Trump (Stranger: The
Challenge of a Latino Immigrant in the Trump Era). En el libro, que salió a la venta el pasado 27 de febrero, Ramos utiliza el famoso rifirrafe que tuvo con Trump para reflexionar sobre la inmigración, utilizando hechos y cifras para desmentir los mitos negativos propagados por la extrema derecha, como que los inmigrantes siembran el crimen y apenas contribuyen en nada a este país. Ramos también aprovecha el libro para contar su historia personal como inmigrante. Nacido y criado en Ciudad de México, se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 1983 para escapar de la censura en su país de origen, que le impedía trabajar bien como periodista. Con sólo 2.000 dólares en el bolsillo y un visado de estudiante, Ramos manejó hasta California para estudiar un año en UCLA Extension. Casi cuarenta años después, Ramos es hoy un aclamado periodista, ganador de un premio Emmy, y quizás el rostro más reconocible en los medios de habla hispana de los Estados Unidos. “Este país me salvó”, dijo Ramos en su entrevista con AL DÍA. “Este país me dio las oportunidades que mi país no podía darme”. Como indica el título del libro,”Extranjero”, los sentimientos anti-inmigración que han ido calando en el discurso americano con la ayuda de personas como Trump, los miembros de su Administración y sus seguidores, han conseguido que Ramos se sienta a veces como un marginado en un país del que es ciudadano. Un país donde ha pasado más de la mitad de su vida y en el que han crecido sus dos hijos. Un país que él considera su hogar. El pasado 2 de marzo, la Free Library de Filadelfia invitó a Ramos a presentar su libro, en un acto en el que asistieron unas 200 personas. Inmediatamente después de terminar la presentación, Ramos visitó las oficinas de AL DÍA para conversar con el CEO de este periódico, Hernán Guaracao. Este artículo recoge los momentos más interesantes de estos dos encuentros:
EXTRANJEROS EN AMÉRICA “Las palabras importan”, dijo Ramos. Especialmente cuando vienen de alguien con influencia política. “Si el presidente Trump suelta comentarios racistas, tiene consecuencias”. espetó: “vuélvase a Univisión”, una frase que, según él, tenía connotaciones más profundas. “Básicamente, me estaba diciendo: “Vuélvase a su país, vuélvase a México”, explicó Ramos a AL DÍA. “No pertenece a este lugar”. Para Ramos, el hecho de que un seguidor de Trump saliera de la sala de prensa lo suficientemente envalentonado como para soltarle que “se marchara de “su país”, solo prueba una cosa: “Que el odio es contagioso”, dijo Ramos. Entrando en detalle sobre este fenómeno que afecta a los Estados Unidos, Ramos dijo que el país está en medio de una revolución demográfica –se estima que en el 2044, todas las etnias de este país serán minorías–. “Mucha gente no se lo cree”, dijo Ramos. “Mucha gente quiere que Estados Unidos vuelva a ser blanco otra vez”. Este deseo, anhelado por un lamentable número de americanos y reflejado en el presidente Trump, ha dejado a muchos inmigrantes como Ramos –latinos y de otras minorías– con la dolorosa sensación de no ser bienvenidos. Y lo peor de todo es que esta actitud anti-inmigrante es que va en contra de los valores americanos. “Lo que no entienden es que somos un país diverso, multicultural y multiétnico”, dijo Ramos. “Para mí, eso es algo bonito”.
CONFIANZA EXTRAVIADA
Igual que muchos otros comentadores de noticias, antes de las elecciones de 2016 Ramos no creía que Trump tuviera posibilidades de ganar. “Cometí un error”, dijo Ramos. “Pensé que nadie podría lograr entrar en la Casa Blanca sin el voto latino. Y eso es precisamente lo que ocurrió”. De los 27 millones de latinos elegibles para votar en las elecciones de 2016, solo 13 millones acudieron a las urnas. Según Ramos, una razón que explica por qué menos de la mitad de los latinos con derecho a voto participaron en las elecciones es que durante los ocho años del mandato de Barack Obama, los demócratas rompieron su promesa de presentar una reforma migratoria en el Congreso para ayudar a los indocumentados. Además, Ramos resaltó que bajo la administración Obama fueron deportados unos 2.5 millones de personas. “Creo que Barack Obama fue una inspiración para muchos de nosotros. ción, no cumplió”, dijo Ramos. “Nos falló, y eso explica porqué muchos votantes latinos decidieron quedarse en casa”. Sin embargo,esto no explica por qué un estimado 29 % de los latinos que sí fueron a votar, lo hicieron por Trump. Esta estadística revela un rasgo de la naturaleza de los latinos residentes en Estados Unidos –sus creencias, sus valores, sus identidades– que, demasiado a menudo, suele ser pasado por alto: “No somos un grupo monolítico”, dijo Ramos. “Somos, muy, muy diferentes”. En referencia al futuro de los latinos en el proceso político estadounidense, Ramos está convencido de una cosa: la necesidad de más políticos latinos electos. A pesar de que los latinos representan cerca del 20 % de la población de los Estados Unidos, solo un 30 % de los miembros del Congreso son de origen hispano, recordó Ramos. Para el reputado periodista, conseguir una representación adecuada en el gobierno es un reto que los latinos deben superar.
“PARA LOS DREAMERS, MIS HÉROES”
Ramos empieza su libro con estas palabras, dedicadas a los Dreamers. “Recuerdo que durante muchos años estuvimos buscando al nuevo César Chavez y la nueva Dolores Huerta de nuestra generación”, dijo Ramos a AL DÍA. “Ya no”. Ramos entiende ahora que su generación estuvo buscando de una forma incorrecta. No se trataba de encontrar a uno o dos líderes latinos, sino a miles de ellos, y eso eso es exactamente lo que son los Dreamers. A pesar del miedo a ser deportados, los Dreamers han conseguido valientemente que sus voces no sean ignoradas en este país. Gracias a su lucha, lograron que Obama implementara el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) en 2012, y ahora que Trump intenta eliminar el programa, poniendo en riesgo la vida de miles de personas, los Dreamers se han convertido en un grano de pus en la agenda anti-inmigración del presidente, gracias a su batalla no solo por sus propios derechos, sino por los de todos los inmigrantes. Ramos destacó que la actitud de los Dreamers es muy diferente de la de sus padres, gente que permaneció en silencio, en la sombra –con razón– para proteger las vidas de sus niños. Pero estos niños han decidido dar la cara,

salir a la luz, presionando para lograr una reforma migratoria, igual que lo han hecho estos días los supervivientes del tiroteo mortal en Parkland, Florida, para exigir una ley de control de armas. Para Ramos, la valentía de todos estos jóvenes sirve de asombrosa inspiración: “Están haciendo cosas muy bonitas, cosas increíbles”, dijo Ramos. “Están ahí delante, plantando cara. No aceptarán un no por respuesta. No se quedarán esperando pacientemente una respuesta. Exigen un cambio”.
RESISTIR Ramos termina su libro con una nota para sus dos hijos, Nicolás y Paola, en la que les exige “desobedecer”. Como han demostrado los Dreamers, Ramos dijo que resistir las injusticias ordenadas por los mandamases del gobierno americano es reponsabilidad de todo el mundo. “Frente al racismo y la discriminación, hay que desobedecer”, dijo Ramos a AL DÍA. “No podemos permanecer en silencio e invisibles”. “No se trata solo de mi consejo, sino que es la única forma de sobrevivir en este mundo hoy en día”, continuó. “Callarse sería ser cómplices”. Ramos explicó que los periodistas como él de-
na experimental alternativa, Fusion. Ramos dijo que cuando Univisión concibió la idea, la cadena se propuso atraer a una audiencia hispana más joven. Sin embargo, antes del lanzamiento de Fusion, Univisión realizó un estudio y descubrió que “los jóvenes latinos no querían ser identificados como tales”. “Su mensaje era: ‘Si desea comunicarse con nosotros, hágalo mediante un canal abierto para todo el mundo’”, dijo Ramos. Así pues, en lugar de crear una cadena para jóvenes latinos, Univisión concibió Fusion como una cadena dirigida a los millennials. “Estos jóvenes latinos se sienten tan parte de los Estados Unidos que simplemente no querían que los pusieran en una canasta diferente”, dijo Ramos. A los aspirantes a periodistas, Ramos les aconseja que no sigan exactamente sus pasos. “Creo que el papel del presentador va a desaparecer”, dijo Ramos. “Los periodistas reales hoy en día son exactamente lo opuesto a los presentadores”. Ramos explicó que se está produciendo “una migración de las pantallas gigantes a las pantallas pequeñas”, lo que indica que ahora las generaciones más jóvenes consumen menos noti-

ben jugar un papel crucial en la desobediencia cuando los que están en la autoridad abusan de su poder, como el presidente Trump. “Nuestro papel es cuestionar ese abuso y asegurarnos de responder con hechos, no con emoción, sino con hechos”, dijo Ramos. “No podemos permanecer neutrales frente a todos estos abusos”. No podemos”.

Ramos cree que el futuro de los medios en español no corre peligro (por ahora). También aseguró que seguirá habiendo audiencia para las noticias en español, siempre y cuando los inmigrantes de América Latina continúen llegando al país en la cantidad que lo hacen ahora. Confía en que éste seguirá siendo el caso durante los próximos 25 años más o menos, aunque el escenario puede cambiar en 50 o 75 años. En cuanto a los hijos de inmigrantes latinos, la mayoría de los cuales prefieren los medios en inglés que en español, Ramos dijo que es importante encontrar la manera de conectar con ellos, como lo ha hecho Univisión con su cade-
cias y contenido informativo de las cadenas de televisión y más de los medios digitales. “Es una nueva realidad que las cadenas de medios deben aceptar”, dijo Ramos, y los mejores periodistas modernos ya han adoptado las redes sociales y otras plataformas digitales para transmitir noticias. El periodismo está cambiando rápidamente, y como presentador de telenoticias, Ramos es consciente de que está pidiendo a sus espectadores que participen en un formato desactualizado. “Les estoy pidiendo algo de la era prehistórica”, dijo Ramos. “Les estoy pidiendo que enciendan el televisor a las 6:30 para verme y enterarse de lo que pasó ese día. Si no me ven, si encienden el televisor un minuto antes o un minuto después, ya no estoy allí. D
esde su oficina en Esperanza College of Eastern University, David Hurtado sabe que una educación de calidad es la herramienta más certera para vencer cualquier obstáculo en la vida, desde la pobreza hasta la discriminación. Esa no es una frase de cajón, por lo menos no en su caso. A los nueve años de edad llegó a Estados Unidos proveniente de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, la capital financiera de Bolivia, el país sudamericano con una población equivalente a la de los inmigrantes indocumentados aquí. Su padre había decidido viajar con un solo objetivo en mente: brindarle mejores condiciones de vida a su familia y garantizar que sus seis hijos tuvieran la educación que él nunca tuvo. De niño, Hurtado fue pobre y fue inmigrante en un escenario netamente anglosajón. En Georgia pasó READ IN sus primeros cuatro años ENGLISH aprendiendo a adaptarse al nuevo mundo. Después llegó a Miami, donde pasó su adolescencia en un ambiente menos homogéneo, más cercano a sus raíces latinas, donde pudo construir un sentido de pertenencia al país que lo había acogido. Fue ahí donde el actual decano de Administración y Desarrollo de Programa de Esperanza College y sus cinco hermanos hicieron realidad el sueño de su papá: labrarse un futuro por medio del estudio. Todos se graduaron de la universidad, tres tienen estudios de posgrados. Hoy Hurtado es doctor en Comunicación y lidera desde hace tres años varios proyectos de Esperanza College, entre ellos abrir una sucursal en Florida y crear el nuevo programa académico de Transmedia Production and Technology, con el que la institución educativa se propone brindarle a los estudiantes latinos de Filadelfia más herramientas de conocimiento. Para Hurtado, que llegó a la ciudad hace apenas tres años, este proyecto es de suma importancia porque –afirma– “aquellos que cuentan mejor su historia, son capaces de darle forma a la cultura y redefinir su futuro”. Por su trabajo en Esperanza College, este boliviano-americano es uno de los finalistas de la campaña #AmericanImmigrant de AL DÍA News y Cabrini University. ¿Qué significa ser un inmigrante americano? Llegué a los 9 años a Georgia, un lugar muy frío para mí, que venía de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, una ciudad cálida. Aunque era una cultura diferente, no Samantha Laub/AL DÍA News
“Aquellos que cuentan mejor su historia, son capaces de darle forma a la cultura y redefinir su futuro” tuvimos que empezar de cero porque al tener claro que íbamos a migrar, mi papá nos puso a estudiar inglés en Bolivia. Eso nos ayudó mucho. ¿Cuándo fue la primera vez que se sintió como en casa aquí? Probablemente fue cuatro o cinco años después de haber inmigrando, cuando me mudé a Miami. Antes de mudarme [todavía] estaba adaptándome a la nueva cultura, no había muchos hispanos [en Georgia], así que estábamos en un contexto muy anglosajón. Pero cuando nos mudamos a Miami, de un momento a otro hubo un montón de hispanos o latinos provenientes de países diferentes. Por primera vez teníamos [a la mano] comida latina, restaurantes bolivianos… Ese momento fue cuando me sentí realmente como en casa con las dos culturas, porque Miami fue para mí el lugar donde tenía tanto la riqueza de la cultura hispana como el orden de la cultura anglosajona. ¿Qué le diría a Donald Trump si lo tuviera en frente? Le diría que los inmigrantes hispanos somos lo que él necesita. Tenemos los elementos [que constituyen] lo que él requiere para “hacer grandioso a Estados Unidos otra vez”. Tenemos una increíble vocación por el trabajo, trabajamos más duro que los demás; es muy normal para nuestra gente tener dos y hasta tres trabajos. Eso significa que somos extremadamente dedicados. Somos innovadores, creativos, emprendedores. Esperaría que él se diera cuenta de que todo lo que tenemos para ofrecer es precisamente lo que está buscando. ace apenas diez días el director mexicano Guillermo del Toro se alzaba con dos Óscares por su película “The Shape of Water”, demostrando al mundo que México está más vivo y coleando que nunca. Por mucho en que se empeñe el presidente Donald Trump en ensuciar la imagen de los mexicanos, llamando a sus inmigrantes criminales y ladrones, es evidente que el arte y la cultura mexicana están en su mejor momento, y que la aportación de la comunidad latina en general a los Estados Unidos va mucho más allá de mano de obra barata, bandas callejeras y traficantes de drogas o vendedores de tacos, cómo han sido retratados durante mucho tiempo en televisión. Uno de los mejores ejemplos que ha dado la pequeña pantalla para demostrar cuán lejos puede llegar un individuo de origen mexicano (o de cualquier otro país latino), en los Estados Unidos es la serie “Mozart in the Jungle”, que el mes pasado estrenó su cuarta temporada. Producida por Amazon, la serie –ganadora de los Globos de Oro en 2016– se inspira en un brillante y prometedor director de orquestra mexicano, Rodrigo de Souza (interpretado por Gael García Bernal), a quién le ofrecen dirigir la Sinfónica de Nueva York. Probablemente ya hayan visto las tres primeras temporadas –y si no es el caso, para evitar spoilers– así que me limitaré a destacar el incalculable valor que tiene escuchar en televisión la voz de un personaje mexicano hablando en inglés con acento español sin tapujos ni vergüenzas. Souza habla en su inglés mezclado con expresiones mexicanas a quién sea: músicos, amantes, políticos, “donors” y multimillonarios de la élite cultural de Nueva York. “Ay, Dios, Ay”, “Ay, hermano”… intercala Rodrigo cuando habla o bebe su “mate” en el backstage. El mensaje de Rodrigo a los latinos en esta serie está claro: “Sí, podemos”. Sí, a pesar de ser mexicanos, colombianos o lo que sea, podemos triunfar en Nueva York, tener éxito en nuestras carreras, ser reconocidos a nivel mundial, de-

Es cierto que la serie también tropieza con algunos estereotipos mexicanos, pero lo hace de una forma cariñosa y positiva: el desparpajo, la espontaneidad y la pasión “latina” que refleja el personaje de Rodrigo, versus la ambición por el dinero y la fama, el individualismo y el control emocional que muestran los personajes anglosajones. Este contraste de valores culturales sirve al productor, Roman Coppola, para trasmitir al espectador que la riqueza de la diversidad cultural en EE. UU. es precisamente saber tomar lo mejor de cada cultura, buscar el equilibrio entre emoción y laboriosidad, pasión y ambición, aprender del respeto por la familia y las raíces que muestran los latinos, sin renunciar a los sueños individuales (el paradigma de la cultura estadounidense). Esta idea - didáctica y esperanzadora a la vez - de aprender de las dos culturas – la mexicana y la estadounidense- también se refleja muy bien en la última producción de Pixar, “Coco”, ganadora de un Óscar a la mejor película de animación de 2018. El protagonista de Coco un niño mexicano llamado Miguel sueña con ser músico. Igual que Rodrigo, deberá romper las cadenas que le atan a su país para poder dedicarse a su pasión: la música. “Escuchar música [clásica] debería ser un derecho para todo el mundo, porque te da paz, incluso cuando en tu mundo no hay paz”, como dice Rodrigo de Souza en uno de los últimos capítulos de la tercera temporada, después de llevar a la Sinfónica de Nueva York a tocar frente a los presidiarios de la cárcel de Rikers island. ■ ALDÍAnews.com / MARZO 14 - 21, 2018 / 21

l mundo de la educación está viviendo un importante giro en los últimos años. La aplicación en las aulas de todos los avances tecnológicos hacen que las clases en las que estudian nuestros hijos en nada se parezcan a las que tuvimos nosotros. Este avance llega acompañado de una presión cada vez mayor por elevar los niveles de enseñanza y desarrollar aptitudes sociales y personales. Pero, ¿y los niños con discapacidad intelectual? ¿Qué tipo de asistencia reciben? ¿Estamos preparados para ofrecerles la educación que necesitan? Desde la importancia de la detección temprana de la discapacidad hasta los programas de asistencia públicos, la educación de un niño con discapacidad intelectual supone un reto para padres y educadores. La implicación de los padres en la educación del pequeño desde el momento de diagnóstico puede suponer una gran diferencia en el desarrollo del niño.
DISCAPACIDADES EN EL DESARROLLO
Según el Centro Nacional de Difusión de Información para Niños con Discapacidades, “discapacidad intelectual” es un término que se utiliza cuando una persona sufre ciertas limitaciones en su funcionamiento mental, que afectan a las áreas de la comunicación, el cuidado personal y las destrezas sociales. Se trata de afecciones que hacen que el niño aprenda y se desarrolle a un ritmo más lento que los niños de su edad. Para estos niños, acciones comunes como hablar, caminar, vestirse o comer pueden suponer un desafío. Según datos del Centro para el Control y la Prevención de las Enfermedades (CDC), aproximadamente uno de cada seis o, lo que es lo mismo, alrededor del 15% de los niños de Estados Unidos de entre 3 y 17 años tiene una o más discapacidades en el desarrollo. Entre estas está el desorden del espectro autista, la parálisis cerebral, la pérdida de audición y la discapacidad intelectual, de aprendizaje o visual.
EL DIAGNÓSTICO
A pesar de que se han dado pasos importantes en la detección temprana de algunas enfermedades como el espectro del autismo, algunas de estas discapacidades se detectan con complejas pruebas que se realizan durante el embarazo. En algunos casos la confirmación del diagnóstico puede llegar algunos años después, bien porque no se realizaron las pruebas necesarias o por la falta de pruebas confirmatorias. En este sentido, es importante que los padres estén atentos al desarrollo de sus hijos y acudan al médico en el momento en el que detecten cualquier anomalía en su avance. Los expertos recuerdan que los niños deben pasar por “hitos” en su desarrollo, tales como dar su primer paso, sonreír por primera vez y responder a estímulos como saludos. LOS PADRES DEBEN involucrarse en la educación del niño desde el primer momento. Picsea los padres estar pendientes del desarrollo de sus hijos y comprobar que estos alcanzar los hitos de desarrollo en el momento adecuado para ello. Muchos padres son desconocedores de esta información. Por ello, el CDC ha puesto a disposición de los padres una guía de hitos en la que, fragmentada por edades, los padres podrán encontrar información sobre las diferentes etapas de desarrollo de sus hijos. En cualquier caso, que su hijo no alcance un hito como puede dar su primer paso, en una etapa de desarrollo concreta, no supone necesariamente que tenga un problema de desarrollo. Los niños se desarrollan y crecen a su propio ritmo y es imposible determinar de manera exacta todos sus pasos. Sin embargo, ante cualquier duda o sospecha, es necesario consultar cuanto antes con un especialista médico.
¿CÓMO EDUCAR A UN NIÑO CON DISCAPACIDADES?
Una vez la familia recibe el diagnóstico, es necesario que el entorno del niño sea informado sobre las necesidades del pequeño. Su educación llevará aparejada una mejora de su calidad de vida y le ayudará a sobreponerse a sus posibles limitaciones. Es probable que el diagnóstico se confirme antes de los tres años de vida. Durante esta primera etapa, es importante que la familia se familiarice con las necesidades del pequeño y consulte con equipos médicos cómo organizar tanto su educación como su vida familiar. Pero las familias no están solas. Cada año, millones de niños con discapacidades y sus familias reciben asistencia federal acorde a sus necesidades al amparo de la ley “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act”, conocida como IDEA. Los servicios que se ofrecen a través de esta iniciativa pueden jugar un impor-
tante papel a la hora de ayudar a los pequeños desarrollen diferentes aspectos de su vida. Para tener acceso a estos servicios, el niño debe pasar una evaluación completa gratuita, en la que se indagará el tipo de discapacidad que éste tiene y cuáles son sus necesidades personales. Las ayudas que proporciona IDEA comprenden diferentes etapas, desde su nacimiento hasta los 21 años, englobando diferentes discapacidades, entre las que se encuentra el espectro del autismo, la sordera, la ceguera o lesión visual, el trastorno emocional, problemas de audición, discapacidades intelectuales, ortopédicas, múltiples, discapacidades específicas del aprendizaje, el lenguaje y la lesión cerebral traumática. La asistencia se adapta tanto al tipo de diagnóstico como a las necesidades de cada etapa, lo que supone una importante ayuda para las familias. Actualmente es necesario acudir a las escuelas para solicitar un examen IDEA para el niño. Si su hijo todavía no está matriculado o es menor de 4 años, no se preocupe. Puede preguntar sobre este programa en la escuela de su barrio.

Por ello, cada vez es más común encontrar información detallada en español sobre cualquiera de estas discapacidades. Por ejemplo, la información que ofrece el Center for Parent Information & Resources. Resulta importante reseñar que es responsabilidad de los padres acudir a profesionales médicos ante cualquier duda acerca del desarrollo de sus hijos. Sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que los primeros años de la infancia del pequeño tendrán una gran importante en el desarrollo de la vida del niño, ya que es durante esa esa en la que se desarrolla, entre otras, la capacidad cognitivas, del lenguaje y emocional. Si se encuentra preocupado por el desarrollo de tu hijo, no dude en consultar a un experto médico. La educación que le pueda ofrecer durante esta primera etapa es de vital importancia. ■

S ¿Sabe qué tipo de diabetes padece? Un nuevo estudio defiende que podrían ser cinco los tipos de diabetes. Esta clasificación ayudaría a crear tratamientos específicos más efectivos y a luchar de manera más efectiva con esta enfermedad. LARA VIEJO

radicionalmente los expertos han clasificado la diabetes en dos tipos diferentes. El tipo 1, caracterizado por una producción insuficiente de insulina que requiere que el paciente se administre insulina diariamente. Y el tipo 2, en el que el cuerpo se vuelve resistente a la insulina, siendo imposible para el cuerpo mantener los niveles de esta. A este último grupo pertenecen entre el 75 y el 85% de los diabéticos diagnosticados. A estos dos grupos se podrían sumar ahora otras tres clasificaciones más. Se trata de la conclusión a la que ha llegado una investigación realizada por el Centro de Diabetes de la Universidad de Lund (Suecia), publicada en la revista médica The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. La nueva clasificación se basa fundamentalmente en medir los niveles de azúcar en sangre. De esta manera establece cinco nuevos niveles de diabetes, tres más graves y dos leves. Los investigadores defienden esta nueva clasificación alegando a la necesidad de tener más datos de los pacientes para poder tratarlos más eficazmente. El estudio se ha realizado sobre casi 15 mil diabéticos diagnosticados de Suecia y Finlandia. Los investigadores han partido de datos como la edad con la que se diagnosticó la en-

fermedad, el índice de masa corporal, las células productoras de insulina, la resistencia a la insulina o el nivel de azúcar en sangre, para establecer cinco niveles diferentes de diabetes. Entre las diabetes graves, se encuentra la actual diabetes de tipo 1 y otras dos clasificaciones que incluyen las resistencias elevadas a la insulina y la falta de anticuerpos. Según esta nueva división, la mayoría de los pacientes diagnosticados de diabetes estarían diagnosticados de una de sus formas más leves. Además, entre las diabetes del tipo leve se encontraría también la producida por la obesidad. Todavía no se conoce con detalle la reacción de la comunidad científica a esta nueva clasificación. Los investigadores involucrados en este estudio reconocen que seguir esta nueva diferenciación ayudaría a generar tratamientos específicos para cada tipo de enfermo. Algo que ayudaría a luchar de manera más efectiva contra esta enfermedad y a mejorar la calidad de los enfermos en cada uno de los estadíos de la enfermedad. En la actualidad, la diabetes es la enfermedad de mayor crecimiento en el mundo. Existen diferentes tratamientos para los dos tipos de diabetes establecidos. Sin embargo, los autores de la investigación defienden que esta nueva clasificación podría ayudar a ir más allá en su tratamiento. ■
egún los datos del Instituto de Mediciones médicas y evaluaciones, en 2015, el 71.1% de los americanos entre 65 y 69 años sufría de obesidad y sobrepeso. Sin embargo, esta tasa bajaba hasta los 64.5% entre las personas de entre 75 y 79 años. Y es que habitualmente encontramos el porcentaje más alto de sobrepeso y obesidad en la franja de los 65 a los 74 años. A partir de los 75 la tendencia tiende a cambiar, llegando incluso a encontrar personas que no alcanzan el mínimo de peso deseable.
¿CÓMO DEBEMOS CUIDARNOS A PARTIR DE LOS 65 AÑOS?
Teniendo en cuenta que entre los 65 y los 69 años nuestro cuerpo tiene tendencia a sufrir obesidad, es importante poner en marcha una serie de hábitos que nos alejen de este problema: • Si necesita perder peso, es importante que se conciencie de la importancia de llevar una vida activa. Haga ejercicios adecuados para su edad, pasee, baile e intente alcanzar los 1000 pasos diarios recomendados. • Olvídese de dietas restrictivas que no te dejen comer ciertos alimentos. Opte por comer de todo de manera equilibrada. Incluya un mayor consumo de frutas y verduras y reduzca el consumo de carne roja. • Preocúpese de que su dieta incluya proteínas. Las puede encontrar en carnes como el pavo o el pollo y alimentos como los huevos o el pescado. • Huya de los cambios bruscos de peso y busque reducir peso poco a poco. Los cambios drásticos nunca son recomendables y menos a esta edad. • Consulte con su médico si debería tomar algún suplemento vitamínico que mejore alguna posible carencia. El especialista le recomendará tomar vitaminas o incrementar la ingesta de algún alimento concreto. Si por el contrario, sufre del problema opuesto y necesita ganar peso, empiece por preguntarse qué puede estar afectando a tu apetito. Si ha perdido peso últimamente puede que sea debido a algún tipo de problema de salud. Consulte con su médico mientras sigue las siguientes recomendaciones: • No se fuerce a comer más de la cuenta. • Añada deliciosos alimentos nutritivos a sus platos como frutos secos, queso rallado, un poco de huevo duro… Pasarán prácticamente desapercibidos pero le estarán dando un aporte extra de energía. ■
