n our cover story this week on pg. 12, Senator Bob Casey talks about his career path, and his priorities as a legislator at a critical time in our nation’s history. One of his statements which stands out for its novelty, coming from the mouth of a career politicians, and especially a male politician, is his observation that “when you’re home, you should be at home...spending as much time as possible engaging with your children.” “Even as a public official, you can’t just absolve yourself of that responsibility to be a good parent,” Casey told AL DÍA reporter Michelle Myers in his visit to the newsroom on Oct. 21. Casey went on to link that care and attention in one’s private life to a concept that can seem almost unheard of in the Trump era of politics—the importance of the twin qualities of integrity and character. “I know it’ll offend some people when I say this, but character matters,” Casey said. That assertion presupposes a resistance to the idea that character does, in fact, matter for public officials. Being someone with “family values” and with some sense of “morality” has usually been an essential part of candidates’ campaigns; but what that means and how it translates into the political sphere is up for debate. As defined by Merriam Webster, character as Casey is using the word refers to “moral excellence and firmness.” (An aside, but it can’t help but be noted that the example phrase is “a man of sound char-

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL acter,” italics ours—an essay for another day.) But what does character look like in a politician? Casey indicated it has to do with “integrity,” a sense of investment and oneness in your personal and professional lives. It has to do with the kind of person you are away from the spotlight, behind closed doors. Character, the basketball legend John Wooden said, is what you do when no one is watching. It seems that Casey, who also coached basketball, albeit for a team of middle schoolers and not an NCAA dynasty, would agree. Joan Didion put it this way, in her iconic though not quite timeless (some of her analogies deserve critique) 1961 essay, “On Self-Respect”: “Nonetheless, character—the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life—is the source from which self-respect springs.” The willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life, one’s own actions: an elusive yet powerful antidote to the rhetoric of blame that has become presidential precedent.❚ - THE EDITOR

ormer Governor of Puerto Rico Ricardo Roselló might be gone — but a new group formed by local organizers is looking to keep the conversation going about what Puerto Ricans on the island and here in Philly want to see change. The organizers of Philly Boricuas first met and came together in the heat of the #RickyRenuncia protests this summer. In July, hundreds of thousands of people in Puerto Rico participated in the largest demonstration in the island’s modern history, and the Puerto Rican diaspora held protests around the world to demand the resignation of Governor Ricardo Roselló following the publication of nearly 900 pages of a private chat group between Rosselló and his advisers. Messages included misogynistic and homophobic language, and even jokes which mocked the more than 4,000 people who died after Hurricane María hit the island in September 2017. But though Ricky sí renunció on Aug. 2, questions of Puerto Rico’s future remain, and so too do the challenges facing Puerto Ricans both on the island and in the diaspora. Adrián Rivera-Reyes, a postdoctoral fellow in cancer research at the University of Pennsylvania who narrowly missed being elected as a City Council At-Large representative in the Democratic primaries in May, said that the formation of Philly Boricuas “came about organically” in the midst of the Rosselló protests. After exchanging information and a series of meetings at various different North Philly locations, the organizers decided to keep working together and form a grassroots movement. About 30 people attended their first Asamblea del Pueblo, or People’s Assembly, held on Oct. 26 at Taller Puertorriqueño in North Philadelphia. Since Rosselló’s resignation, more than 50 people’s assemblies have been held throughout Puerto Rico as spaces for discussion about what comes next. On the U.S. mainland, there have been at least three assemblies hosted in New York City, which boasts the largest Puerto Rican diasporic community, and some

Organizer Puchi De Jesus said the goal of Philly Boricuas’ first event, in the style of the other people’s assemblies that have taken place in Puerto Rico and in communities in the diaspora, was to “start the conversation and make people feel like they had a space where they can talk.” “That was really good hearing everybody’s thoughts and opinions and how they feel about things, because it gives us an idea of what we really need to be doing and focusing on,” she added. The assembly included a presentation on Puerto Rico’s political history, and linked corruption in Puerto Rico with local figures and issues in Philadelphia. The presenters also compared some of the similarities between Philadelphia’s gentrification issues facilitated by federal opportunity zones established by the Trump administration’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, and the tax incentives that were formed by federal opportunity zones and Puerto Rico’s Act 20 and 22, which allow non-Puerto Ricans to purchase houses and land and subsequently become residents of the island. Attendees also included City Councilwoman María Quiñones-Sánchez, who forsook her more accustomed position at the podium to sit in the midst of the audience as organizers presented and audience members

took their turns in an open mic session. Charito Morales, a community activist and nurse who is also an organizer of Philly Boricuas, told the gathering that many issues of lack of access to healthcare and education on the island predate Hurricane Maria, and continue to form an immense challenge to the physical, mental, and economic health of Puerto Ricans. “People have to travel through three or four muncipalities to be able to have access to healthcare,” Morales said. She emphasized the need for members of the diaspora community in Philly and beyond to work with those on the island because of their greater access to resources and information. Organizers said that the date for the next people’s assembly has not yet been decided, but they are currently working on gathering responses for a survey of the Puerto Rican community in Philly. They hope that by compiling people’s responses in both English and Spanish, they will be able to reflect back to the community an accurate picture of their priorities, concerns, and perspectives. “We don’t want to come to dictate, rather we want to understand and see what resources we have, what abilities we have, and how we can incorporate more people and then talk about these problems and begin to attack these situations, keeping in mind what it is that most interests and is most important to the community,” Rivera-Reyes said. ❚

ven though Donald Trump has transformed the USA in a gigantic, chaotic, at times tragic and at times laughable reality show, he has one undeniable, if sad, accomplishment under his belt: He has made hate, racism and mendacity the new normal in the USA. Not surprisingly hopelessness, exhaustion and pessimism are growing by leaps and bounds among Latinos, and not only the undocumented, but also legal immigrants, and even U.S. citizens like Puerto Rican journalist Susanne Ramírez de Arellano. So much so, that more and more Latinos are either leaving the country or thinking about it. “I am no longer welcome or made to feel particularly safe here. In Trump’s America,

to be Hispanic is to be an alien and speaking Spanish is a thing to fear or hide,” Ramírez de Arellano wrote in NBC News Think on Nov. 2, expressing the feelings of a rapidly increasing number of Latinos. “The opprobrium against us Latinos coming from Trump’s mouth — bad hombres, rapists, lazy — have been the spark needed to ignite this latent powder keg of racism. I no longer feel safe in Trump's America. So, I'm leaving it,” Ramírez de Arellano added. Racism and gratuitous cruelty against them and their children have destroyed the faith of Latinos in achieving a better future in this country, not necessarily in financial terms, but in terms of respect for their dignity and worth as human beings. Thanks to the white supremacist in the White House, the USA is no longer the adopted nation they loved and once thought of as a welcoming land of opportunity. “I now don't believe that America is another name for opportunity," Ramírez de Arellano wrote. “If you speak Spanish or look like me, it has become another name for hate.” The sad truth: Thanks to Trump, for Latinos the American Dream has become an empty phrase, a tired myth. Fear and hatred are the name of the game. ❚

“ I no longer feel safe in Trump's America. So, I'm leaving it.”

f you have been following closely the impeachment process against President Donald Trump in the House of Representatives and you feel confused, don’t worry; you are not alone. Keeping track of this convoluted chapter of American politics is not a simple thing. Since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the start of investigations into Trump's alleged abuse of power, the Capitol has become a battleground between Democrats and the White House. The phone call between U.S. President and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky put on the table the Trump Administration's strategy to withhold military funds granted by Congress in exchange for information that would favor Trump's re-election campaign in 2020.

POLITICS This was denounced by a whistleblower within the White House and confirmed by the transcript published by the government. However, the highest judicial body of the government, the Department of Justice, refused to conduct an investigation in this regard, which forced the House of Representatives committees to conduct their own investigation. In addition, an independent investigation carried out by the Manhattan attorney's office found alleged links between President Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, and Ukrainian factions in favor of Moscow in a pro-Republican ploy within the country. For its part, the Trump administration issued a statement explaining its determination to prohibit any government official from testifying before the House committees, arguing a "witch hunt" and an "illegal investigation." The obstructionism reached the political ranks last week when a handful of Republican representatives entered the rooms where the House Committees held witness hearings in the investigation without authorization. In response to strong Republican and government criticism, Democrats have announced a public vote to formalize the procedure and move on to the next stage of impeachment, according to the Washington Post Finally, last Thursday the House of Representatives passed a resolution with 232 votes in favor and 196 against that “describes the rights and procedures” to open investigation and show the evidence of President Trump's alleged abuse of power to the American people, as explained by the New York Times. Despite the speed with which this political process is taking place, it remains to be seen whether the determination and evidence in favor of Democrats can convince any Republican of what is at risk. mittee hearings are expected to culminate around Thanksgiving, the results should be brought to the floor of the House for a new debate around a formal accusation. If President Trump is impeached, the resolution is taken to the Senate, where the Republican majority will probably try to bury what they have called "an illegal investigation." However, this has been the only defense bastion for Republicans in the face of the serious situation facing President Trump. información que favoreciera la campaña de reelección de Trump en el 2020.

It remains to be seen whether the determination and evidence in favor of Democrats can convince any Republican of what is at risk. NOVEMBER 6 - 13, 2019

With a father who became the first Hispanic president of the Gary, Indiana public school system, and a mother who was one of the first certified school nurse practitioners in Indiana, Torres saw firsthand what hard work could produce. She took notice of her parents’ accomplishments, despite their situations, and used it to help drive her own commitment towards working hard and achieving her goals. “My parents were scrappy and found a way to go to college in their 30s,” she said during an interview with AL DÍA. Torres was called upon to lead the charge in transforming and restructuring its global medical device business. That challenge helped Torres develop her personal leadership style — leading with love, a motto she now lives by. “As I moved into leadership positions, I wanted my people to know that I saw them and that they were so important,” said Torres. “Leading with love is not being a push-over. It is about accountability, high expectations, encouragement, and honesty,” she added. As chief strategy and business transformation officer, Torres led one of its most successful turnarounds in company history — a true testament to her dedication to working hard, her resiliency, and desire to help others. “As a Hispanic, gay, woman from Gary, [Indiana], I was an unlikely person to make it to an executive level,” she said. “Along the way, I felt isolated and alone. It was a tough journey.” However, that journey provided an avenue to create an atmosphere where others didn’t have to feel the way.

“Leading with love is not being a push-over. It is about accountability, high expectations, encouragement, and honesty.” A NEW ENDEAVOR

After accomplishing everything she wanted within corporate America and achieving financial freedom, Torres decided she wanted to spend more time at home, while and make a broader world-wide impact. This led to the launch of “The Mentoring Place,” a community-based platform that serves to help women achieve lifelong career goals, success, and fulfillment. Torres created this new platform to help other women who may be going through similar experiences she did. When asked about the value of mentorship, Torres said: “It is critical to success and satisfaction, sponsorship even more so.” “When we don't understand the game, we can be naive, inefficient and ineffective,” she added. With the platform, “I have the opportunity to change the trajectory of a person’s career and life,” said Torres. ❚

native of Scranton, PA, U.S. Senator Bob Casey, Jr. grew up the fourth of eight children to Ellen and Robert Casey in a home steeped in politics from

day one. When Bob, Jr. was three, his father began his long career in politics by becoming a Pennsylvania state senator. By the time the young Casey was eight, senior was PA’s Auditor General. Although he doesn’t remember much of those early years, the senator does recall the almost 20 years his father spend trying to become PA’s governor. “I ran for Governor once and lost. Three times! That's hard to do,” said Casey, Jr. That experience imprinted on Senator Casey’s mind what it means to be a public official — someone who’s “honest, honorable and people-centered.” “He would worry and stay up at night worrying if he was doing things the right way. He taught me lessons about integrity and honesty, but also about how to stand up and fight for people that don't have a voice,” he said. But his dad wasn’t the only one shaping the man who would eventually inhabit the U.S. Senate on behalf of PA. Casey’s mother was also a major influence. After raising eight children, Ellen Casey became PA’s First Lady and made breast cancer and illiteracy her marquee issues. “Her husband gets elected governor. And guess what? She now had responsibilities and duties that she didn't have before,” said Casey. “Even without

the background in public policy, even without running for office herself, she taught me a lot about how to be a good public servant and a good advocate.” Senator Casey himself initially followed in the footsteps of his father, graduating from Scranton Prep before attending College of the Holy Cross in Worcester,Massachusetts. After graduating, he would go on to law school — but his most formative experience came outside the classroom. Before entering law school, Casey Jr. took a year to volunteer coach fifth to eight grade basketball players at a North Philadelphia school. “There was no way that I would see that community as a lawyer, if I stayed in the practice I was in. There's probably no way I would've really experienced the community in North Philadelphia if not for that opportunity, even as a public official who has responsibility for that,” recalls the Senator. riginario de Scranton (Pensilvania), el senador Bob Casey, Jr. creció como el cuarto de los ocho hijos de Ellen y Robert Casey, inmerso en la política desde la cuna.

UU., representando a Pensilvania.

Together they have four children: Caroline, Elyse, Julia and Marena. After 35 years of marriage, the senator feels “ fortunate and blessed” for all the “heavy lifting” Teresa Casey has done. “Not only she [Teresa] had the heavy lifting of raising four daughters in a difficult world [...] but also was helping me in campaigns and allowing me to do the work that I've done. I was really fortunate and blessed to have a partner who was willing to take on even more responsibility and do it so well,” said the senator. But if there was one thing he learned from having a parent in the political scene, it is that, “When you're home, you should be at home.” For the senator, that doesn't mean you don't take phone calls or make sure to be prepared for the next work day. But it does mean “spending as much time as possible engaging with your children.” “Even as a public official, you can't just absolve yourself of that responsibility to be a good parent. you're supposed to have as a citizen, but also as a public official [...] I know it'll offend some people when I say this, but character matters. We're not robots,” said the senator. And after a lifetime in politics, his beliefs have solidified into bills and resolutions.

PRO-LIFE DEMOCRAT

As unconventional as it might sound, Senator Casey is a pro-life Democrat, who has voted to fund Planned Parenthood. The Irish-Catholic senator has a score of 70% on Planned Parenthood Action Fund. That’s due to the fact that his alternative to abortion isn’t abstinence and obstruction, but rather prevention, and programs that will support new mothers during

“She has a constitutionally protected right to have an abortion. But if she chooses not to, we gotta make sure we're there for her [...] A lot of politicians in Washington run around every day saying ‘I'm for families, I believe in life and I believe in moms and babies,’ and don't do a damn thing to help moms and babies,” said Casey. For the senator, being pro-life is more than being opposed to abortion. It is about doing things for the mothers and children who have already been born. “Democrat, Republican or Independent, if you don't support those programs, Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance, among others, you can’t for real call yourself pro-family or whatever the label they give themselves. You've got to back it up with policy,” he added. That includes immigrant kids. According to the Senator, you can not call yourself a pro-life if you “endanger” a child by “supporting an immigration policy that puts kids in cages.”

GUN VIOLENCE

The health of children here in Philadelphia is also a top concern for the senator, who visited AL DÍA two days after two-year-old Nikolette Rivera was shot and killed, and an 11-month-old boy was critically wounded. As of October 2019, more than 280 people have been murdered by gun violence in Philadelphia, in what authorities are calling an epidemic of gun violence. NOVEMBER 6 - 13, 2019

Senator Casey said that he wants to focus on passing legislation, based on policies proven to reduce gun violence. The bills, which have been introduced to the Senate, include: Background check bill: New background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties, unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer, or importer first takes possession of the firearm to conduct a background check. However, it doesn’t apply to a “gift in good faith.” Extreme risk protection order: Allows a citizen who is a family member or a law enforcement official to go into court and report someone they know who owns a gun and is publishing hate speech, violent messages, or exhibiting other signs of instability. “I don't want to pretend that these two bills are going to directly impact what we saw this weekend, with children being killed and wounded. But these two bills would be a start,” he affirmed.

EDUCATION

Another way to reduce gun violence is by giving people access to opportunities, including quality education. “We need a strategy for children. We need something similar to what we did when we helped the people of Europe after WWII, a massive program to rescue people from poverty,” the senator explained. In a perfect world, for Senator Bob Casey, that would involve expanding public education to cover the first two years of college. In that scenario, people would be able to obtain at least an associate’s degree. It would also make the burden of student loans easier for those who continue on

“There's probably no way I would've really experienced North Philadelphia if not for that opportunity, even as a public official who has responsibility for that.” In his perspective, this could even help the shortage the country has seen in professions like public health and healthcare. “We got to make sure that those folks, doctors and nurses, have the training and the opportunities to deliver care to folks.

HEALTH

But even that wouldn’t be enough to help the healthcare system. As of right now, “there are about three threats to health care,” according to the senator: The first is the Republican Lawsuit against the Affordable

Care Act. If successful, it will eliminate protection for people with preexisting conditions. “It will destroy the Affordable Care Act, and I mean destroy it! It will wipe out protection for tens of millions and destroy coverage for 20 million Americans,” he added. For Casey, the Trump administration is the second threat. The third one, he said, is the proposals to cut Medicare and Medicaid by trillions of dollars. “I know I sound negative, but a lot of what we gotta do here [in the Senate] is fight,” he explained. On that note, the senator, who was once accused of having an “oatmeal personality,” finished the discussion with a passionate promise to ensure that Medicaid and Medicare remain. “I am going to fight them [Republicans] morning, noon, and night. I'm not gonna hold their hand. I'm not going to compromise with them. I'm gonna fight them and beat them. That's what I'm going to do,” Casey said. ❚

IMPEACHMENT

nce the impeachment process moves to the Senate, Senator Casey and the rest of the Senate will become the jury. They will have to listen as the House tries to demonstrate if the President of the United States of America has abused his power. “What I don't know yet is whether or not in addition to the evidence the House has gathered, can the Senate consider other additional evidence? My guess is that we can. There would be additional evidence introduced, especially by those who are taking the president's defense,” said the senator. Democracy will turn into a “Law and Order” episode, complete with a person

on trial, a prosecutor, a jury and a judge, but without the expectation of proving innocence “beyond a reasonable doubt.” “For example, if you're a juror in a criminal trial, what the judge instructs you to do among other things is you have to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. We wouldn't have that charge. We would have a much lower standard. We can make an assessment on our own, [based on] what we believe to be abusive power,” said Senator Casey. If President Trump is forced to face a trial in the Senate, and his prosecution manages to convince at least two-thirds of the Senate of his guilt, he will be subject to removal from office. ❚

U

After its first produced movie – “Perfectos desconocidos”, by Manolo Caro, and ten projects in development or pre-production, the movie-theater chain founded in 1971 and present in more than 14 countries, is changing the rules of the so-called “globalization." The company’s CEO, Alejandro Ramirez, explained to Variety, that Cinepolis is experiencing an “important” growth and they are about to produce four or five movies each year. The next one will be released on May 2020. It will be a terror movie directed by Rodrigo Fiallega and entitled “La Herencia del mal” about a journalist who, after a miscarriage and her mother’s death, comes back to her family home and discovers through some VHS videos that her grandmother had been an exorcist. Who do you think she had exorcized? “We resisted the temptation for many years [to open a production division] but our distribution arm has been doing well although it’s still relatively small,” said Ramirez, and added that the production division is limited to Mexico at the moment.

A BID TO DIVERSIFY

t was another normal day in seventh grade, and I had just returned home from drum practice at the local arts studio. My mom was making some food, and I was trying to explain how I had finally begun to read drum tab, but the words in Spanish escaped me. And like always, my mom pretended not to understand even a syllable in English as I struggled to find the right words. Frustrated, my 11-year-old self blurted out: “Ama, I am tired of always speaking Spanish at home. I hate that I get in trouble every time I say a word in English.” To which my mother replied, “Alaitz, don’t you understand that you have been blessed with the asset that is Spanish? You kids just don’t understand. The future will prove that Spanish is one of the greatest tools you could have ever asked for. Just you wait. It will open so many doors for you in the future”.

I owe a lot of things to my mother. Undying love, support and stability all come to mind. Yet recently, I have grown increasingly thankful for her insistence and dedication in ensuring my mastery of the Spanish language. It sure feels like I have come a long way since it all began. Ever since I can remember, I have spoken Spanish in my home. It was my first and only language until around two or three years of age, when I started to attend preschool and pre-K. My mother would later explain her rationale for only speaking to me in Spanish: “Alaitz, don’t you understand that English was inevitably going to be your dominant language? After all, we live in the U.S. and you will be in constant conversation in English. It was best for you to start out with only Spanish because I knew your English would catch up.” But I disliked being different, and it all started with my name. My full name as it appeared on the role call: Alaitz Kiko Ruiz-Arteagoitia. Every time a teacher would mispronounce my name I cringed, and I hated being known as that kid with the weird name whose family would only speak to him in Spanish. I chalk up my insecurities at a young age to the fact that I wanted to be like everyone else, just another American kid. Even the vast majority of the Hispanic kids who attended my school lacked proper Spanish-language mastery, and often spoke to their families in English. I hated not being able to say a sentence in English at home without being chastised and scolded. “Why the hell am I the only one living under such strict language norms? Everybody else has it way easier,” I thought. Read more at https://aldianews.com/articles/cuentame-tell-me/how-spanish-saved-mylife/56730.❚

T

he 2020 U.S. Census is a fundamental part of American history. Since 1790, every 10 years a census has been conducted to determine the proper representation in Congress, meaning the number of representatives per state in the U.S. House of Representatives, and to decide how funds are used in each community. From the census, communities decide how certain funds are spent on schools, hospitals and roads. Making sure that everyone--including citizens and non-citizens--is counted is the only way to do this. The U.S. Census Bureau is actively recruiting thousands of citizens from Philadelphia to across the country to make sure everyone is counted. Jobs include going door-to-door as a census taker as well as recruiting assistants, office positions and supervisory positions. These are temporary jobs and will last several weeks. The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring people to work in the communities that they live in because they recognize that people are most familiar with their own community.

QUALIFICATIONS

• According to the U.S. Census Bureau website, to be eligible to apply, applicants must be: • 18 years or older. There is no age cap to apply. • Have a valid social security number • Be a U.S. citizen • Have a working email • Complete the online applica-

CIERRE IN CLOSING

HIGH DEMAND FOR HISPANIC TALENT LATINO PROFESSIONALS WILL PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF THE U.S. WORKFORCE—AND CORPORATIONS KNOW IT. LOS PROFESIONALES LATINOS SON LA CLAVE DEL FUTURO DE LA FUERZA LABORAL DE LOS EE.UU.

Inspired by career examples like the one from Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina astronaut in the nation, honored with a lifetime achievement award in Phoenix, many young Latinas are taking over the field of Engineering with enthusiasm. They represented more than half of the attendees at SHPE convention.. Photo: LinkedIn.

Foto: LinkedIn.

T

he rush from corporate America to recruit today badly needed Hispanic talent was quite evident last week in Phoenix, Arizona, where the Society of Hispaanic Professionals Engineers was hosting their 43rd annual convention. 300 American corporations in need of new employees flocked to Phoenix —100 more this year than last year— to compete for the young Hispanic engineers that are beginning to graduate in droves from colleges and universities all across the country. The images of a career fair flooded with thousands of applicants, and hundreds of corporations eager to interview and recruit them, was a genuine glimpse at the current transformation of the labor market in the U.S. Although only 7% of Hispanics are part of the STEM workforce in the country, while the Hispanic population in the country is close to 20%, the pace to increase those numbers is gathering speed, propelled by the aging and retirement of the current workforce, the rapid transformation of the nation’s demographics, the unstoppable forces of the economy, and the great job SHEP is doing to attract more Latinos to the STEM field.

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL Thousands of recruiters were interviewing and hiring thousands of Hispanic students and graduates over the course of the five-day event. In total, 9,500 attendees converged on to Phoenix Convention Center—2,000 more than last year’s convention, which represents a jump of almost 20% from last year. There were 620 interview booths in Phoenix, 100 more than last year in Kansas City. Boeing corporation alone extended 180 job offers on the spot, during the convention— 30 more than last year. “It was a game-changing event,” the CEO of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Raquel Tamez, declared this week, announcing these unexpected numbers at the conclusion of the massive congregation of Latino professionals in Phoenix.❚

L
