ver the past five weeks, we’ve been highlighting each of the honorees who will be recognized at our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration on Oct. 16. You’ve met Uva Coles, who has carved a path through speaking, writing, and leadership to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. You read the story of Manuel Trujillo, an entrepreneur who came from Colombia and built a career in tech innovation. Maria Quiñones-Sánchez’s profile as a politician is well-known, but we traced the origins of her public service career in our cover featuring the fourth-term City Councilwoman. In the field of medicine, Dr. Ana Nuñez has made her mark at Drexel and beyond. Yet our cover story on the physician and medical education leader may have been the first time that you read about her career path. And last but not least, through our feature you hopefully gained a new view of who Nilda Ruiz is, and why she has dedicated herself to her work as executive director of the local nonprofit, Asociación

ince 2017, there have been more than 30 nationwide policies affecting transgender people's ability to join the military, enter shelters, use bathrooms and hold jobs, according to The National Center for Transgender Equality. On October 3, Philadelphia City Council bucked the trend and passed three bills to protect the city’s transgender and non-binary youth communities. Introduced by Councilmember Helen Gym, the three bills address youth organizations, access to facilities and specific legal definitions. “For far too long, trans and nonbinary people have lived with the uncertainty that their jobs and their lives are not protected. Every Philadelphian deserves the right to live their life with dignity,” said Gym.

PROTECTING THE YOUTH
The first rules that all youth-serving organizations in the city can not discriminate against the trans or nonbinary children they serve. This discrimination takes many different forms and requires a multi-faceted approach to curb. For one, the bill requires the organizations to have written policies to protect trans and nonbinary youth. It also mandates that these policies appear on the organizations’ websites and be physically displayed in their places of operation. Regarding staff, the bill makes sure the organizations regularly train them to prevent discrimination, while also communicating the same message to the youth they serve in the necessary language.
INCLUSIVE SPEECH AND ENVIRONMENT
The second bill addresses the need for proper bathroom facilities within City Hall and requires the implementation of gender-neutral bathrooms. Soon, City Hall will have at least one gender-neutral bathroom on every floor, and beyond, one within every city-owned building in Philadelphia. Finally, the third piece of legislation will expand the definitions of sexual orientation and gender identity within the city’s already-established legal framework. Philadelphia’s Fair Practice Ordinance already prohibits discriminating in areas of employment, housing and public accommodations based on gender identity, but better definitions will lead to better, more informed enforcement. For the record, here are the updated definitions: Gender Identity: An individual’s internal sense of gender, or one’s gender as perceived by others, that may or may not align with one’s physical anatomy, chromosomal sex or sex assigned at birth. Examples include, but are not limited to, man, woman, non-binary, genderfluid, and agender. Sexual Orientation: An individual’s romantic, physical, sexual, or emotional attraction to others, or a lack of attraction to others, by preference, practice, or as perceived by others. Examples include, but are not limited to, heterosexual, bisexual, gay, lesbian, and pansexual. ❚

f something became clear in Ecuador the last couple of weeks, it is that Lenin Moreno, its president, is not the people’s choice. Willing to massacre his own compatriots to ingratiate himself with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Moreno’s word is worthless. He cannot and should not be trusted: after all, a traitor is always a traitor. And a traitor is exactly what Moreno is. The man was only able to arrive at the presidential Palace of Carondelet two years ago riding the coattails of his popular predecessor Rafael Correa thanks to his promises to continue Correa’s popular revolution program. Yet, as soon as he took over the presidency, Moreno not only betrayed Correa, but the aspirations and dreams of the majority of the Ecuadorean people that voted for him. The man with the ironic name –Lenín, no less--is nothing but a puppet of the IMF, Washington and the most corrupt and despicable members

of the Ecuadorean oligarchy. Actually, vengeance has already started against his political opponents. Paola Pabón, the mayor of Pichincha and one of the most popular and respected opposition leaders, was illegally and violently arrested. It happened the day after antigovernment protest were suspended, when Moreno announced the cancellation of decree 883 that eliminated gasoline subsidies, and the suspicious creation of a new one. The announcement came after televised negotiations between the government and indigenous groups on Sunday. At least seven people were killed in the protests and 2,000 were arrested or wounded. Pabón is being accused of “promoting violence.” "Today they entered my house at dawn and knocked down the door while I slept," Pabón said in a Facebook post. “They detained without evidence. Being in the opposition in a democracy cannot be a crime. It is not democracy when political opponents are persecuted in this way.” No, it is not a democracy, but since is not happening in Venezuela or Cuba, it is OK with the U.S., the OAS, and most of the mainstream media. Protests in Ecuador may have stopped for the time being, but the abuse of power and the exploitation of the people by Moreno and the gang of thieves and sell outs that manipulate and surround him have not. The root of the problem goes far beyond decree 883 and until Moreno leaves, political persecution stops, and the needs of the people are placed before the IMF demands, every apparent solution will be a sham. Whoever trusts Moreno’s words does so at his or her own risk. ❚

hatever Congress is about to discover in the White House seems to be deeply rotten. The desperation of government advisors and all those involved in preventing the Committees of the House of Representatives from finding the truth is such that they have begun to resort to overtly anti-constitutional measures. Last Monday, White House lawyer Pat Cipollone sent a letter to the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, saying the Trump Administration will refuse to participate in a “constitutionally invalid" process. Cipollone says that the investigation of the Committees is based on "numerous, legally unsupported demands made as part of what you have labeled–contrary to the Constitution of the United States and all past bipartisan precedent–as an ‘impeachment inquiry.’” It is obvious now that the White House intends to reverse the power game in the greatest threat

POLITICS
“Mr. President, you are not above the law. You will be held accountable.” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
Donald Trump’s presidency is facing. The lawyer accuses Pelosi of having carried out the proceedings in secret, having violated civil liberties and separation of powers by threatening officials of the Executive Branch, and having violated the Constitution. "Put simply, you seek to overturn the results of the 2016 election and deprive the American people of the President they have freely chosen," the letter states. For her part, Pelosi responded that Cipollone was seeking to "cover-up [Trump's] betrayal of our democracy," Politico reported. “The White House should be warned that continued efforts to hide the truth of the president’s abuse of power from the American people will be regarded as further evidence of obstruction,” Pelosi said in a statement. “Mr. President, you are not above the law. You will be held accountable.”
THE PERFECT CAMPAIGN SETTING
Having lost the majority in the House of Representatives last year, Republicans who still remain loyal to the U.S. president seem to be seizing the moment to drive a political campaign of enormous dimensions. Politico explains how, while many representatives have announced their retirement, there is already a fundraising machine
8•
put in place to take advantage of political turmoil. "A rash of summer retirements has undercut the GOP’s message that the majority is within reach, and the National Republican Congressional Committee has trailed the House Democratic campaign arm in fundraising every month this cycle," explains the media. For their part, some defenders of the president have gone a step further and have placed themselves directly in front of the cameras. On Tuesday, conservative leader Jim Jordan of Ohio, Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Matt Gaetz of Florida gave an impromptu press conference in the basement of the Capitol during the congressional recess. “This is not a fair process. We spent more time in the SCIF last time with Ambassador [Kurt] Volker than Adam Schiff did,” Meadows told the large scrum of reporters. “You may have noticed that he came out here ... and what did he do? He gave this benign thing and then raced off to a fundraiser.”
FURTHER DIVIDING THE COUNTRY
Given the evidence dropped by the Democrats in the House, the country remains more divided than ever with respect to the impeachment issue. According to Vox, support for impeachment against Trump is increasing day by day, to the point that this Wednesday most Americans are in favor. Comparing the surveys of Civiqs, Washington Post-Schar, and the FiveThirtyEight analysis, since the whistleblower’s complaint was made public, 50.1 percent of Americans support impeachment. Among Democrats, support is at 82.7%; among independents, it’s at 45.7, and among Republicans, the figure varies between 8 and 12%. The White House's tantrum against collaborating with the process could tip the balance in favor of Pelosi and her team, as long as they push efforts to clearly explain the public where the true anti-constitutional ploy is coming from. ❚

With family living in the area, he was deeply impacted. He took time off from his job at the time and began reflecting. “I realized that as much as I thought I was doing in the community, I wasn’t doing enough,” he said. “And I started just asking more questions to people that were more involved with impact in communities, [and asked] what I can do?” After reaching out to the former CEO of ALPFA, his predecessor Charles P. A trip to Lehman College had a huge impact on Rivera, where he spent hours talking to students about a variety of things. “When I left there, I said, ‘There’s something special about this organization. The platform has six areas of focus: domain competency; social engagement; wealth creation; health & wellness; community engagement; entrepreneurship & intrapreneurship. “We’re leveraging that platform to be able to… make an impact in people’s lives, not just company-wide, but from a personal standpoint,” said Rivera. He hopes to continue having conversations with chapter leaders, members, students, and professionals to keep them engaged and support them in bringing new ideas to the table that can help advance ALPFA’s mission to connect and inspire the next generation of Latino leaders. ❚

n the 1960s, a Puerto Rican couple moved to Philadelphia. He was a waiter; she was a seamstress. Nine months later, Nilda Ruiz was born in the City of Brotherly Love. The newest Ruiz was diagnosed with a mild congenital disorder of movement, posture and muscle tone, better known as cerebral palsy, which caused her to spend a lot of time in the hospital as a child. essary. The hospital was the only place where she would hear the Anglo tongue, listening to nurses and doctors talk. Over time, Ruiz came to understand the language better than she could speak it. But that didn’t save her from the bullying of her classmates once school started. In one instance, Ruiz recalled them tricking her into saying the F-word. At their suggestion, a young Nilda shouted it in the classroom, completely unaware of the real meaning. She was given a pink slip. “I thought they were going to tell mommy how I participate and how good I am at school. But they told her that I would be cursing all the time. I'm like, ‘Cursing! I don't even know what I'm saying,’” said Ruiz. Through the school system, Ruiz rapidly learned English and at home, her parents instilled the value of education, among other things. Her mother was a philanthropist “in her own way.” Every little bit of money she made would go to people in their church. “She would help a Mexican friend, who
was an immigrant. She paid for the house and gave them work, so he could save money. When he gathered enough, I think he moved to Canada. I got that from her,” recalls Ruiz. Due to “the stress of being here and... the machismo that carried a lot of men at that time,” her mother left her father when Ruiz was eight-years-old. Even when the situation was tough, Ruiz praised her mom for being “so ahead of her time,” and teaching her that she didn't need a man, but rather education, in order to survive. Así tu tienes opciones,” said Ruiz’s mom, urging her to focus on her studies to ensure her freedom as a woman. To this day, she considers it the best advice ever given to her and the driving force during her years at Olney High, and later, Temple University. Ruiz was accepted into three universities but decided to remain as close to home as possible. “I didn't dare to go to any of them because I didn't know if my parents would know [how] to get there. en un vecindario en donde todos hablaban español y en el que el inglés era innecesario.
Ruiz was accepted into three universities but decided to remain as close to home as possible.
No quería obligarlos a hablar inglés. Hubieran pensado que yo era una creida y [yo) también quería hacer que se sintieran cómodos”, dijo Ruiz. their eight-block radius and they don't move from there,” she explained.
“SPEAK ENGLISH”
Back then, Ruiz said “all the white kids got to shadow directors. We [Latinos] worked at the typing pool.” Through hard work, she became head of the typing pool and a substitute secretary for the director — a position that would soon pay off.. Growing up, Ruiz was warned not to speak Spanish “because people don't like Puerto Ricans, Latinos in general, around here.” But it had never been much of a problem for her In school, she met students who came directly from Puerto Rico and didn't speak any English. As a bilingual, stateside Puerto Rican, conversing with them was never an issue.. “I didn't want to force them to speak English. They would've thought I was a creida, and [I] also wanted to make it comfortable for them,” said Ruiz. That changed after a summer break, when a new school policy banned talking in Spanish. Someone had complained to the director after hearing them talk. When Ruiz found out, her mind ran nonstop. She thought of an image of her grandfather working in the sugarcane fields of Puerto Rico and it didn’t match with the label of “spic” she often heard given to others. “Latinos are culturally hardworking people, why they are telling us we're not good enough?” she remembers thinking. Ruiz didn’t let it define her. “Boy, that just infuriated me! I just said, no, I'm not accepting that narrative,” she explains. As secretary, Ruiz had access to the director. “I don't know if you realize, but my parents were born US citizens speaking Spanish. It is a public building, they [students] should be able to speak Spanish

anytime they want,” Ruiz recalled telling the director as he came into the office one day. “That's a good response!” he replied. Two weeks later, students were allowed to “speak whatever they wanted.” The experience was life-altering. “There is not anything that the community is experiencing or has experienced that I personally, or my family hasn't,'' said Ruiz.
A NONPROFIT JOURNEY
After graduating with a major in Human Resources, she was hired by Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha (APM). They had just finished a housing project for low-income families, and needed a property manager. “I haven't gotten myself straight together and you want me to show the community how to do better for themselves,” she remembers thinking. Not only did Ruiz figure it out, but she also found herself enjoying her work. After a couple of years, she left APM to work on a community housing development for Nueva Esperanza A Association. After three years there, Ruiz sent resumes out and received an offer from the National Council of La Raza in Washington D.C. “Do I want to be a big fish in a little pond, or do I want to go to Washington, D.C. and become a little fish in a big, big sea?” she recalled thinking. . Ruiz worked there for six years, learning about other nonprofits throughout the country. Her experience helped her realize that sometimes, founding a nonprofit comes down to the timing and approach.. As times change, many can’t keep up with the community’s needs they initially set out to serve.. “That’s it!” she remembers thinking, that was what APM was going through. Not knowing if she was making the right decision, she left her comfortable job in DC to headed back to Philly. “If I screw this up, nobody's going to want to hire me ever. But if I do well, the sky's the limit,”said Ruiz. “I felt that if APM would go down and I didn't do something, I would have always lived to regret it,
Dije no. No aceptaré esa narrativa”, explica Ruiz.

Her first move back at the organization was to broaden its service to cater to more than just the Puerto Rican community. HOW TO RUN A NONPROFIT AND NOT DIE TRYING
APM serves Philadelphia’s diverse Latino community. They will help anyone, says Ruiz, but the main focus is on residents of the 24th and 26th Police Districts. Their engagement process starts by asking the community what they need. First, they said “we can’t find our foods.” So, APM helped develop a supermarket catered to the community. As one need was fulfilled, others appeared, and the process to find solutions began again. “They wanted to reduce the crime, a better education system, walkability, and greening,” said Ruiz. One by one, APM tries to address the communi-

But running a nonprofit isn’t easy, especially when it comes to funding. “90% of APM budget is government grant funding,” said Ruiz. That’s why she makes sure to go for a line of credit that can sustain itself. “Sometimes they'll offer me $1 million, but if the project costs $1.5 million to build, I just won't take it because I can't,” Ruiz explained. However, money is not enough if you don’t have good people supporting the job. Ruiz said she has “a really good team” of people who are OCTOBER 16 - 23, 2019
passionate about the work, even though sometimes they are discouraged by the immensity of the problems they are tackling. “You get beaten down so much by everyone telling you you're not good enough,” said Ruiz. She makes sure to always reiterate, “You are good enough,” to her staff, whenever she gets a chance. After all, Ruiz says, their work makes it possible for APM to provide: four Pre-K programs, four free behavioral health clinics, financial literacy and development programs for affordable housing, a process to help kids in the foster system, and foster home certifications, among other initiatives. And their work has paid off. “We're going on our 50th year, this coming year in 2020. So when we look back, it feels good to have done [the work],” said Ruiz with a smile on her face. yo sabía lo que significaba para la comunidad, para mí”, le dijo Ruiz a sus amigos.
Primero, dijeron “no encontramos alimentos”. ❚ • 17

This multilingual mode is just the beginning for the device. Dave Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president of devices, stressed the benefits of the new language options by pointing out that there are “millions of homes worldwide that have dual speakers, and sometimes three languages, in a single home.” Now, the user can change to “Spanish United States” and benefit from all the features in their own language, like weather forecasts or Latino playlists, news, home apps, and setting alarms or reminders. The Spanish version launch will be available on a selection of Echo devices: Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, Echo Show, Echo Show 5 and Echo Plus.
JUST REMEMBER: ALEXA IS LISTENING
The retail giant’s sales and market expectations don’t seem to be affected by last April’s scandal when its employees admitted to listening to the voice recordings of Echo customers and other Alexa-enabled smart speakers. "This information helps us train our voice recognition and natural language understanding

systems so that Alexa can better understand your requests and ensure that the service works well for everyone," Amazon said in a statement. The company does not explicitly state in its terms and conditions that its employees review customer recordings, although Alexa's privacy settings do offer users the possibility of not helping the company "develop new functions." Amazon employees had access to the customer's name, account number and device serial number for each voice clip. The staff is played a clip and then any word that Alexa struggles to identify is isolated. The company's technicians can correct the transcript, and send those results back to Alexa AI so it can listen to users more accurately in the future. According to Jake Moore, a cybersecurity specialist, "it has long been feared that smart technology and social media are listening more than we think," he told The Independent. ❚
SOLO RECUERDE: ALEXA ESCUCHA
❚ OCTOBER 16 - 23, 2019

riday, October 4 made history for Latinos in Philadelphia. The first Latin American book fair took place in a windy, but ever-accommodating location: the City Hall rotunda. A DREAM COME TRUE
When we spoke to the organizers, they all agreed on a common thread: that the book fair was a dream that came true in the most unexpected way. Edgar Ramirez had the idea, but he did not know where to begin. With the help of individ-

uals like Ana Omana and event planner Mariuska Forbes, the idea took flight. An event that could take up to a year of planning, happened in just two months. They took his dream and helped him execute it. And it was a hit. When we spoke with Forbes about the planning, she was only counting on having 12 local authors. What she did not expect was to have to put a limit on the amount that could participate. That experience has prepared them well for next year’s book fair, where they expect double the turnout. Ramirez wanted to show that the Latino community is, in fact, literate, and bring books that are proof of its love for literature. When asked his opinion on the success of the fair, he replied humbly: “The simple fact of doing it is already a success.” ❚ Read more by scanning the QR code or visit our website www.aldianews.com/cultura

Richard “Dick” Stafford, started Yonah Coffee. The company had two purposes: to help Arita obtain a work visa to remain legally in the U.S., and to raise money for his college fund. We decided to follow up with Arita for an update on where life has taken him since AL DÍA last spoke to him almost seven years ago.
Tell us about “Yonah Coffee.” How did this come about? It all started with my interest in attending college, but not having the means to. Dr. Stafford and I sat down to brainstorm and we came up with the idea of selling coffee. The initial idea was to use the profits to fund my education and utilize this business to help with my immigration status. Of course, there were a lot of logistical things we had to think about, but we did our research, and we were able to identify the best way possible to begin this journey. Our business grew enough to be in about 30 coffee shops across northern Georgia.
"There are a lot of misconceptions about coffee."
Where is Kevin Candelario Arita today? After trying several other things, I began to think about coffee again, but I wanted to do things differently this time.I just launched my coffee company, Candelario's Coffee, here in Dallas, Texas. My vision consists of traveling to Honduras and eventually Central America to source coffee from local farmers. I want to add value to each step in the supply chain. First, I would like to source the coffee directly from farmers and at the same time educate them about how to better harvest their crops, how to retain the quality, and how the market truly works. I have been doing my research and what I found is that when the price of coffee goes down, farmers stop caring about the quality. I want to be able to educate farmers that although coffee is a commodity, if you have specialty coffee beans, you can sell them at a higher price point in the event the market price is down. On the other hand, I also want to educate consumers about what they’re drinking. There are a lot of misconceptions about coffee. One of my favorites is when people ask for the “strongest coffee,” but coffee doesn’t work like that. Coffee has caffeine, but it all comes down to rations and to how it’s brewed.
What’s next for Kevin? What would you like to accomplish? I want to grow my company from where we are today. I am starting small, selling online, but I want to grow my business to be a supplier to different coffee shops. Once that happens, I intend to begin sourcing coffee from Central American farmers, Hondurans specifically. I would also like to start my own roaster here in Dallas down the line.❚

CIERRE IN CLOSING CELEBRATING
A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF LATINOS
THIS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, WE EMBRACE THE DIVERSITY AND RICHNESS OF LATINOS IN THE U.S. ESTE MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA, ABRAZAMOS LA DIVERSIDAD Y RIQUEZA DE LOS LATINOS EN LOS EE.UU.
E
arlier this year 22 Latinos were shot to death in El Paso, TX, because somebody, full of the fears created in the current climate of racial division, thought we were an invading race. Latinos, very fortunately, are not a race. We are a wonderful amalgam of all the races of the world. White, Black, Asian and Native American— all have already come together over the centuries in the ample river of the Hispanic culture. We are the “fifth race,” or the “Cosmic Race,” as the Mexican philosopher José Vanconcelos called us at the beginning of the 20th Century. The AL DÍA Hispanic Heritage Awards celebration taking place this week is a moment to reflect on the need for a better understanding of Hispanic Heritage. We propose we look at the representatives of the largest ethnic group in America today in a totally new manner.
ENGLISH ESPAÑOL Not anymore through the common stereotypes, but through our archetypes— which abound in our midst, but are yet to be properly acknowledged. This week we have the privilege of presenting 5 of them. They are 1 man and 4 women of Hispanic descent, but in reality 5 outstanding examples of American accomplishment. We call them 5 archetypes of our History. Maria Quiñones-Sánchez, Uva Coles, Manuel Trujillo, Nilda Ruiz and Anna Núnez: Thank you for accepting to be the 2019 AL DÍA Archetypes during this Hispanic Heritage Month.❚
A
