Almost four years ago there was intense controversy in Spain over the reissue of “Reencuentro de Personajes”, the work of Mexican writer Elena Garro. On the promotional banner, one could read the following: "Octavio Paz's wife, lover of Bioy Casares, the inspiration of García Márquez and admired by Borges.”
In other words, the publisher defined Garro as a woman related to distinguished men and not as the great writer of her time that she was.
Advertising was withdrawn a few days later.
Although it may sound macho and old-fashioned, the truth is that the incident showcased the invisibility of female authors the in so-called ‘Latin American boom’, eclipsed by their male colleagues like García Márquez, Cortázar or Vargas Llosa, who were not known for being very feminist, equal, or even allies of women.

Of all the female authors of the boom, among them Garro and the superb Brazilian author Clarice Lispector to name a few, only one of them became “the woman of the boom.” That was Isabel Allende. The only courtesy guest at that select and tiresomely manly club.
The reason seems to have been the success of her first novel, “La Casa de los Espíritus,” published in 1982.
The author would explain that she began writing it during her exile in Venezuela on Jan. 8, as a long letter to her grandfather who was then about to die in Chile. But as the letter grew longer it ended up being a 500-page manuscript.
From then on, Allende always began a new novel every Jan. 8 and that mixture of discipline and superstition has worked very well for her, becoming by her own merits, the most widely-read Spanish-language author in the world.

Hace unos cuatro años hubo una intensa polémica en España por la reedición de “Reencuentro de Personajes”, la obra de la escritora mexicana Elena Garro. En el faldón promocional podía leerse lo siguiente: “Mujer de Octavio Paz, amante de Bioy Casares, inspiradora de García Márquez y admirada por Borges”.
Es decir, la editorial definió a Garro no como una de las grandes escritoras de su tiempo sino como una mujer relacionada con hombres insignes.
La publicidad fue retirada a los pocos días.
Aunque pueda sonar del siglo pasado y muchas personas se echaron la mano a la cabeza cuando ocurrió, lo cierto es que este incidente expresa muy bien la invisibilidad de las autoras del llamado ‘boom latinoamericano’, eclipsadas por sus colegas varones como García Márquez, Cortázar o Vargas Llosa, de los que huelga decir que tampoco se caracterizaron por ser muy feministas ni muy paritarios, ni siquiera aliados de las mujeres.
De todas las autoras del boom, entre las que se encuentra Garro o la soberbia autora brasileña Clarice Lispector, sólo una de ellas pasó por ser “la mujer del boom”, y esa fue Isabel Allende. La única invitada de cortesía a ese club selecto y cansinamente varonil.
El motivo parece haber sido el éxito de su primera novela, “La Casa de los Espíritus”, publicada en 1982.
La autora explicaría que empezó a escribirla durante su exilio en Venezuela, un 8 de enero, como una larga carta a su abuelo que entonces estaba a punto de morir en Chile. Pero conforme la carta se alargaba acabó siendo un manuscrito de 500 páginas.
A partir de entonces, Allende empieza una nueva novela cada 8 de enero y esa mezcla de disciplina y superstición le ha funcionado muy bien, convirtiéndose por méritos propios en la autora en español más leída del mundo.

After recently receiving the Medal-lion of Excellence from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in the United States, where Allende has lived for years, Spanish publishers have now recognized her with the 2020 Liber Award in honor of her entire career. To no surprise, it's an award that has been mostly given to male authors.
The award also values "her effort to reach authors from all over the world and of all ages with different genres ranging from autobiography to fiction, which include the description of important historical events.”
Next November, Allende will publish “Mujeres del Alma Mía,” an autobiographical essay about her history as a feminist and curious minds want to know: Will she talk about those other forgotten women of the boom?

Tras haber recibido recientemente el Medallón de Excelencia del Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, en Estados Unidos, país donde Allende reside desde hace años, ahora los editores españoles la acaban de reconocer con el premio Liber 2020 en honor a toda su carrera. Un galardón -no espero que se sorprendan - que ha sido mayoritariamente entregado a autores hombres.
El premio valora también “su esfuerzo por llegar a autores de todo el mundo y de todas las edades con diferentes géneros que van desde la autobiografía hasta la ficción, en los que se incluye la descripción de acontecimientos históricos importantes”.
El próximo noviembre, Allende publicará Mujeres del alma mía, un ensayo autobiográfico sobre su historia como feminista, y las mentes curiosas quieren saber: ¿Hablará de esas otras mujeres olvidadas del boom?
