Dear Southern Hemisphere Breeder,
Congratulations on your opportunity to breed to HE’S WATCHING.
Winning the 2014 Meadowlands Pace was a huge highlight in my career. He could not have been more impressive, which was a clear reflection of his entire career. As an offspring of the mega producer American Ideal, HE’S WATCHING was a fantastic athlete with a great mind. He was handy to drive and could sit the pocket, which is rare for a horse with his calibre of speed. This colt’s sprint home was like no other, on the backside of the Meadowlands Racetrack it felt like he grew wings as he soared to the wire. His 1:46.4 victory in the Meadowlands Pace remains that fastest mile I have ever driven. With over $1.1 million in earnings, HE’S WATCHING has the ability and forward demeanor to make a great sire. Wishing you luck, Tim Tetrick

RACING HILL
A MONSTER ON THE TRACK How did you get involved in Harness Racing? I first got involved through my Dad who had a lot of horses in North Wales. I remember going to Prestatyn Racetrack when my dad had the best horse in Britain. That horse was Cheerio. In those times, the horses going from the US to Australia or New Zealand did quarantine in North Wales at Lord Langford’s Stud. Horses like Cardigan Bay, El Patron and Smooth Fella all came to New Zealand via North Wales. I remember when Apmat was coming through and Noel Simpson challenged my Dad to a match race between Apmat and Cheerio. My Dad accepted and we only had three weeks to get Cheerio right. Unfortunately, he lost, but those two raced three more times and Cheerio beat Apmat every time. Some good horseman came from Australia and New Zealand, like Dick Lee and Ray Green, to train in North Wales. How big is your involvement in Harness Racing? I currently have 64 horses in America and Canada ranging from mares and foals through to racehorses. Is Racing Hill the best horse you have owned? Without a doubt. He was a monster on the track, but he was so well natured. He could run a 26 quarter and then back off to run a 30 quarter. I’ve owned a lot of good horses like Western Silk, Lucky Man, Art Colony, etc, but not none of them were great like Racing Hill. When did you know he was good? Right from the start. He was a very good two year old. He won at the Red Mile in 1:51.4. The track was off that day and he won easily. There was a good horse in that race called Travel Playlist who had gone 1:49.4 a couple of starts earlier and Racing Hill just went by him like he was nailed to the floor. What made Racing Hill so good? His gait. He had a very easy gait which enabled him to go fast. He also had a great will to win. The day he won the Adios he went the first half in 52.2 and was parked for it as well. He went to the front and then went away from them to win in 1:48.4. What was your favourite win of his? The Adios was my favourite – it was absolutely breathtaking. As Brett Miller said after he drove him that day, “Horses just don’t do that.” The track was sloppy that day as well and he still did what he did. Amazing! He looks to be off to a good start to his stud career? He certainly has. He covered a full book of mares at Hickory Lane Farm and they were quality mares. His fertility is excellent – mares only have to walk past him and they go in foal. We’ve bred our best mares to him and we eagerly await his first foals in 2018.
FROM HICKORY LANE FARM Racing Hill has enjoyed a great first year in the breeding shed. With a full book and being blessed with outstanding fertility (a 97% conception rate and 78% confirmed in foal on the first heat cycle), Racing Hill is sure to have a major impact in the Ohio Breeding scene. We are excited to see his foals hit the ground in 2018!

FROM LONGFORD TO MENANGLE FROM FOALING TO FAME IGNATIUS
On the 27th November 2014, a bay colt was born on the Longford, Tasmania property of champion Tassie horseman Barrie Rattray. Some two and a half years later that same colt became an Australian record holder.
Now named Ignatius, he steamed home up the long Menangle straight to gather the trophy and lucrative first prize money in the $125,000 final of the NSW Breeder’s Challenge. So why was a two year old, bred in Tasmania, taking home the trophy in a NSW Breeder’s Challenge race? Well fortunately for owner Lyrae Graham and her partner Todd Rattray (the trainer of Ignatius), the now gelding is sired by the former NSW based stallion Roll With Joe. Ignatius is the third foal of the talented Art Major mare Ashkalini. She won $124,338 from 56 starts in Tasmania including the finals of the Evicus Stakes (2yo) and Granny Smith (4yo) both times driven by Todd Rattray for his dad Barrie. Now Ashkalini has an even bigger claim to fame as she is the older half-sister to the champion Rattray family owned pacer Beautide (now retired with earnings of $2,183,130). So as Roll With Joe and Beautide’s sire Bettors Delight are full brothers, then it is perhaps no surprise that Ignatius is now an Australian record holder. Will he achieve what his three quarter relation achieved? Well history will answer that question but a man whose opinion must be respected, Barrie Rattray, said recently “after I drove him in just his third career start to win the Sweepstakes final in Hobart, I declared he was the best two year old I had ever driven.” Ignatius was having just his sixth start when he won the NSW Breeder’s Challenge final, a fact not lost on his driver that day in Todd’s older brother James. Surprisingly, Ignatius has felt three different drivers hold the reins in those six starts to date, Barrie has driven him twice and the two brothers Todd and James also twice each. The sire of Ignatius, Roll With Joe, will shortly commence his second stud season at Alabar’s Victorian property. He has now sired 32 winners from his first two crops with Ignatius becoming his first $100,000 earner. Just five days after the stunning win of Ignatius, another colt in High Roller Joe claimed victory in the Group One
Westbred final for two year olds at Gloucester Park. These two wins elevated Roll With Joe into sixth position on the Australian two year old sires list (as of 5th July) just $11,000 behind his brother Bettors Delight in 5th position. Three of the top four positions are held by Alabar stallions (as of 5th July) with Sportswriter 1st, Art Major 3rd and Shadow Play 4th. Ignatius is owned by a young lady from Launceston, Tasmania – Lyrae Graham and trained by her partner Todd Rattray. Todd is the younger brother of the twins Gareth and James, both of whom have made their mark as talented horsemen in both Tasmania and NSW (James). Recently we spoke with Todd about his star pupil Ignatius. You are from a famous harness racing family in Tasmania. Did you always want to follow in the footsteps of your dad and older twin brothers? Yes I grew up here in Northern Tasmania surrounded by horses, so I was into them from the word go. However I loved my footy (Aussie rules) as well and represented Tasmania in state competition. I did also receive an offer to play for Port Melbourne in the VFL, but in the end the love of the horses won out.
IGNATIUS STORMING TO THE LEAD
Do you train in conjunction with your dad and how many winners have you trained? Yes, I live in suburban Launceston, Tasmania with my partner Lyrae and train out at dad’s place at Longford. I took out my trainer license two years ago but wouldn’t have any idea of how many winners I’ve trained. This is my best season though and I’m also in a battle with my brother Gareth to win the driver’s premiership in Tassie this season. How did you and your partner Lyrae come to own Ignatius? I’ll have to give the credit for this to Lyrae. She picked him out of a bunch of weanlings at dad’s place so I’ll have to let her chose our horses from now on. You can’t argue with her choice of Ignatius. Lyrae is also having a good run with another horse she bought from my brother James. Taurisi, a four year old, has had eight starts down here in Tassie for four wins and three seconds.
IGNATIUS AND JAMES RATTRAY
Who named Ignatius and where did that name come from? Once again I have to give credit to Lyrae. Ignatius is a Latin word meaning “Fiery one”. He was a handful with his early education and in January this year we decided to geld him and turn him out for a spell. When he came back in he was a different horse. I qualified him in mid-April and the rest is history now. Hopefully it is a name that will be remembered for a long time in harness racing. What are Ignatius’s best attributes? He is the complete package now. His gait is great and he has speed that you can use whenever you want. He is still learning though (just six starts to date) and should be even better when we bring him back next season as a three year old. He will come back to Tassie now and spell.

AUCKLAND REACTORs
Trish Dunell Photo
Auckland Reactor is off to a very solid start with his first crop of two-year-olds. To date he has had 50 raced and/or qualified for seven individual winners, highlighted by the Australian Group 1 winner Gold Reactor (Redcliffe Yearling Sales Series Final) and the smart New Zealand filly Miss Ethel Sunshine (NZ Sires Stakes Heat). Significantly, the trainers we’ve spoken to are confident that their Auckland Reactors will come into their own as three-year-olds. No real surprise there. After all, Auckland Reactor himself didn’t kick off his race career until September as a three-year-old. His siring a Group 1 two-year-old winner is an absolute bonus.
“I recognised early on that he was such a sublime pacer that I didn’t need to do a lot with him. I lined him up with the least work I ever had with a horse, just seven weeks training.
MISS ETHEL SUNSHINE Mark Smolenski Auckland Reactor’s exciting two-year-old filly Miss Ethel Sunshine is coming back into training with Mark Smolenski and he is quite excited about her prospects for the new season. “She is currently jumping out of her skin and importantly has put on weight after doing poorly on her trip to Auckland, where she didn’t perform to expectations,” said Mark. “She is a filly who loves racing and can really follow pace in a race.” He is planning to set her for the NZ Sires’ Stakes, Nevele R Fillies Series and the Southland Oaks and feels she will be very competitive in them. He is also hoping that Dexter Dunn will stay with her after he drove her to such an impressive win at Addington in a heat of the NZ Sires’ Stakes Fillies Series earlier in the season. Having previously beaten the colts in a trial, Miss Ethel Sunshine went in to the Sires Stakes Heat with a bit of a reputation and as one of the favourites. She well and truly franked this form, leading all the way and cruising home in 57.4 and 28.9 to win by four lengths As a filly who has only had three starts as a two-year-old for a win and an unlucky third her future looks bright.
“He’s back in work with his owner David Luke now. I’m not sure what his plans are with him but I’d love to get him to train as I’m sure he’ll win a very good race one day. He’s just such a beautiful horse. A lovely pacer.” Russell Ferguson Based at Edendale in Southland, Russell trained the talented Auckland Reactor two-year-old gelding, Ardtoo. Early in the season he won a workout and a trial and also finished powerfully to run second in a trial won in 1:57.6. A lot of good judges were saying he was the pick of the two-yearolds in Southland. He lined up in the Gr3 NZ Kindergarten Stakes on his home track at Wyndham and the locals were giving him a real chance against the Canterbury invaders. Unfortunately, the day didn’t go as planned. “It was a shame what happened in the Kindergarten as I thought he could’ve handled that field. He was a bit green as there wasn’t any lead up races for him and he just got really keen, broke a hopple and galloped. We’re not sure which happened first but he’s a big strong horse and got very fired up. It’s unlike him as he’s usually such a good natured horse. “Anyway, he was always going to be a better three-year-old so we’re not too worried. “He’s done very well. I turned him out straight after the Kindergarten Stakes and he’s been back in work five weeks
Michael House Michael won a trial in March with Jazzy Star in 2:02.7 coming home in 57.9 after leading all the way from a wide draw.
“He’s certainly got his share of ability. So much so that I let my son Craig talk me into not selling him – and the phone was ringing multiple times every day there for a while. We figured, why sell him? You wait all your life for a good one.
Behind him that day were the NZ Sapling Stakes winner Cole Porter and Aloka who went on to be one of the best two-year-olds in New Zealand.
“We’re really looking forward to racing him again and are optimistic for a good season.”
An Interview with
Adam Bowden of Diamond Creek Farm
Adam Bowden
D
iamond Creek Farm is a huge player in North American harness racing.
Over the last decade they have invested more than anyone else in the purchase of many of the best broodmares and fillies the industry has to offer. The progeny they are breeding from these mares now sees them right at the very pinnacle of the sport as yearling vendors and racehorse owners. They won three US Breeders Crown Finals in 2016 with horses they bred and raced. More recently moving seriously into the stallion scene, Diamond Creek now have a formidable line up of sires. In 2017 their line up featured Always B Miki, A Rocknroll Dance, Sweet Lou, Creatine, Father Patrick and Southwind Frank. With most of these stallions either shuttling to Australia or New Zealand or being available here via frozen semen, Diamond Creek’s influence is also spreading to our shores. Pleasingly, they are also giving back to our local industry as sponsor of the likes of the NZ Derby at Addington and the Diamond Creek Fillies Classic in Southland. Adam Bowden is the man behind Diamond Creek and he shared these thoughts with us. A lot of people say harness racing is an aging sport. Against the trend you’re a very young guy who obviously loves the sport and is an industry leader. For the benefit of our breeders, what is your background and where did your passion come from? I grew up in Maine, far from harness racing’s hotbed of activity but my father and grandfather had a few cheap claimers so I would spend some weekends in the summer hanging out at the barn. It wasn’t until I interned at Hanover Shoe Farms in college that my fire was fuelled - and since that time I have been obsessed with the sport and being a major player in it. Diamond Creek has quickly become a leading player in North America at the yearling sales and also as a stud farm. What is your philosophy on business and horses? We try to buy horses that we feel will improve what we are looking to create. It’s the same thing everyone else is trying to do. Our goal is to raise a quality horse that outperforms our expectations (which are pretty high). Recently we have ventured into stallions and the same philosophy applies. We look to invest in stallions that we feel have the ability to transcend the breed and take their offspring to levels greater than they were. We take chances, we invest early with the hope of catching lightning in a bottle but we also realize that all stallion investments are long term assets. What have been some of your most exciting moments in harness racing? Winning the Kentucky Futurity with homebred Creatine (who will be standing at Nevele R in New Zealand this year) and breeding two-time divisional champion Pure Country. There is nothing greater than breeding, raising and then racing great horses. At what point – and how - did you become involved with Always B Miki? I’ve had a relationship with Bob Boni and Mitchel Skolnick that preceded Always B Miki and I spent 2016 chasing the horse around the country. To me he was the epitome of what we were looking for in a stallion and I had to have him. I made it my mission to acquire the rights to the horse.
What, to you, were some of his career highlights? Everyone is going to mention his world record mile at the Red Mile but two races that stick out to me were the Ewart Memorial at Scioto Downs, where he was parked on the outside of Wiggleit Jiggle It for 5/8ths of the mile in the driving rain and still prevailed in a world record equalling mile (1:47.0) and his tenacious rally against Wiggleit Jiggle It in the Breeders Crown Final. Both races showed heart, determination, and unrelenting fortitude.
please. He is very forgiving but at the same time he has preferences and expresses his displeasure. He understands he is important and can act accordingly. He is a very large horse (standing at 16.3) but he seems to understand personal space.
ALWAYS B MIKI
He overcame two major injuries during his career. A lot of our breeders won’t know about this but it obviously added to his standing in the eyes of your breeders? Anyone who knows his history and what he has overcome can only be amazed. To return from two separate injuries that would threaten the career of any horse and rise to the top of the sport is unheard of and to do it against the horses he competed against only proves his greatness. Miki setting the world record must have been an exciting day for the team at Diamond Creek knowing he’d shortly be heading to your farm? We had agreed on a deal the night before with Bob and Mitchel. I was sitting next to Bob during the record breaking mile and I think I was the happiest and calmest person at the track. Everyone around me was shouting and screaming as he was coming down the stretch and I sat there perfectly content with a big smile on the face. It was icing on the cake at that point. Jimmy Takter says Miki might just be the greatest horse that ever lived. What would you say to the breeders of Australia and New Zealand about how Miki is regarded in North America? Jimmy has been known to make outlandish statements but he is right on with this one. What he did and with what he overcame it would be hard to argue against it. He repeatedly beat the best in the sport and did it on two reconstructed hind legs. Miki is considered as an absolute freak. You syndicated him for his stud career. Tell us how this was received and some of the farms that become involved. Rather than a normal syndication, it was decided early on that 5% interests in the horse would be sold. Most, if not all, of the major breeders either purchased a 5% interest or bred significant mares to the horse. It was a who’s who in his first crop. Miki has been extremely well received at stud, serving a full book at $12,500. What are some of the top mares and who are some of the leading breeders that have bred to him? Take a look at the top breeders in the US and Canada and they all bred to the horse. The list of mares bred to the horse is filled with millionaires, dams of millionaires, and the best bred mares in the country. It would be too long to list. We had a full book within days and had to turn away very good mares. How would you describe Miki as an individual? Miki is about as smart a horse as I have ever been around. He feeds off whoever is around him and he desperately wants to
He’s the most interesting horse I have ever been around. I am also not the first person to feel that way.
What’s Miki like to work with? His handler, Kailyn, would say he is her favourite and makes her laugh. For a large horse, he is quite easy and smart. His favourite thing to do is race anyone in the paddock next to him. Haven’t seen him get beat yet... With semen being shipped vast distances around Australia and New Zealand, stallion fertility is of huge importance to our breeders. How has Miki’s fertility been? For a first year stallion, Always B Miki’s fertility is off-the-charts good. He gives an amazing amount of semen, his quality is sky high and if a mare is not pregnant it’s most likely her fault. Final numbers aren’t in yet but he will be above 90%. You also have A Rocknroll Dance with the Alabar / Nevele R partnership. His first 2yo’s are now racing in North America. What are your thoughts on how he’s started off as a sire? He bred a tremendous number of mares in his first three seasons while at Nevele R and we really appreciate everyone’s support. His two year olds are now just hitting the track and we are very encouraged by their precocity. Trainers seem to be pleased and the results show. If Always B Miki follows in Dance’s footsteps in the Southern Hemisphere, we would be thrilled.

SWEET SUCCESS
BETTERTHANCHEDDAR
Stu McCormick Photo
Every new sire covets a superstar in their first crop.
I
n the to-date-unbeaten filly, My Sweetchilliphilly, Betterthancheddar has achieved just that.
Everything she has done to date oozes class. Her victory in the Bathurst Gold Tiara Final in March was just sublime. She sat parked and had the audacity to kick away and win by more than 20 metres – in a 1:54.7 mile rate. An Australasian record for a two-year-old filly for any distance greater than a mile. With many horses, there are “sliding doors” moments where fate had to intervene for them to become a reality. This is never truer that in the making of My Sweetchilliphilly. Betterthancheddar shouldn’t even have been in New Zealand in the spring of 2013 to conceive My Sweetchilliphilly. He was not due to shuttle to the Southern Hemisphere until 2014 after having completed his final racing campaign and debut stud season in North America. However, these plans
were tipped on their head by a calamitous event on 29 June 2013. Betterthancheddar went into the $500,000 Ben Franklin at Pocono Downs as favourite. He led through the first quarter in 25.8 on the sloppy track before taking a trail. He never saw daylight and was full of racing at the finish. After the line he appeared to take a bad step. He had virtually torn his suspensory from the bone. He had to be helped from the track and was taken straight to New Bolton Veterinary Clinic. His race career was over. Once his condition stabilised and after veterinary assurance and Cheddar showing he had the temperament to handle the situation, the decision was made for him to complete his rehabilitation in quarantine. This meant he could fly to New Zealand to commence his Southern Hemisphere career a year earlier than planned. Something of a silver lining for all concerned.
BETTERTHANCHEDDAR
He had already missed the main stallion flight
MY SWEETCHILLIPHILLY
downunder but could make the deadline for a second flight – but it didn’t arrive until late October. That he missed the first month and a half of the stud season makes what Betterthancheddar has achieved with his first crop even more noteworthy. Another piece of fortune along the way in the My Sweetchilliphilly tale is that her dam was originally advised as being not in foal to the service by Betterthancheddar. It was then advised several months later that, hey, this mare is actually in foal. Tact Philly was sent to Betterthancheddar by the then owners – Canterbury trainer Greg Payne, Melissa Tapp and Danny Hopkins. How they came to own her is also fortuitous. Greg Payne has had great success buying weanlings from the PGG Wrightson All Age Sale at Karaka and getting them up and running for sale as early two-year-olds. This year’s WA Oaks winner Macsaffair being one of the recent standouts for him. Greg was at the sale in 2013 looking for weanlings when a mare came though the ring in foal to Bettor’s Delight. Unable to resist what appeared to be an absolute bargain he put his hand up and bought her for $5,500 on behalf of himself, Melissa and Danny. She went down to Danny’s property in Matangi (just out of Hamilton) where she foaled a filly (registered as Eye Lash and now racing for Paulette Screen) and was put back in foal to Betterthancheddar – the mating that produced My Sweetchilliphilly. The mare then went to Auckland Reactor at Danny’s property. She produced a colt which was sold to Tony Herlihy as a weanling.
Now solely owned by Melissa Tapp, Tact Philly is at her dairy farm in Hinds (just south of Ashburton) and is due to foal to Raging Bull. In the words of Melissa Tapp: How was the decision made to breed Tact Philly to Betterthancheddar? “We bred Tact Philly to Betterthancheddar as he was a new stallion and something fresh. The mare had left winners by different stallions so I thought why not try a new stallion. I like breeding to the new stallions. Being by In The Pocket I also thought she should cross well with him.” How did you get involved in breeding? “I used to work for Greg (Payne) and that’s where I picked up the breeding bug. “We now have a dairy farm and I have the broodmares as a hobby. We currently have five broodmares. The plan at the moment that the foals we breed go up to Greg to be developed for sale as two-year-olds – although one day I’d like to keep one and race it ourselves. I’d love to race a really nice horse.” What’s your pick of your foals this season? “I’ve currently got a He’s Watching filly out of my Mach Three mare, Kiwi Cash. She’s just exquisite. She is beautiful and paces everywhere. She’s the most exciting young horse we’ve ever handled. The mare herself is big and the He’s Watching filly is also a really good size. “The mare’s back in foal to He’s Watching – we had to really, we were just so happy with the filly.” And Greg Payne: What was My Sweetchilliphilly like when you first got her? “She was always a lovely type, right from the beginning. “She took a wee bit to get going but had a lovely nature and was an unbelievable
pacer and really got over the ground.” How did her sale unfold? “It was December last year. She was due to go to a trial but I got a call from an agent. I told him about her and that they won’t get anything better than this filly. They arranged for Mark Jones to have a drive on her. “She worked a half in 56 on a private track and just jogged it. It was the first time she’d been off my place. “Mark wanted her instantly and told them if they didn’t buy her he’d buy her for himself. “She won her first trial in Australia, bolted in … and she hasn’t stopped winning since.” My Sweetchilliphilly is expected to complete her already impressive two-year-old season with a Breeders Crown campaign. Of note, Betterthancheddar is also off to an excellent start in North America with a quite remarkable 24 of his 42 foals having raced or trialled in the first month of the season. The industry is crying out for a young sire to really step up. Cheddar is certainly putting his hand up to be the one – particularly if fate continues to be kind.
HE’S WATCHING – the news is all good
Dave Landry Photo
The word is officially out on the progeny of He’s Watching, Alabar’s exciting young pacing stallion, and the news is all good. He’s Watching, with his brilliance on the racetrack and bloodlines containing duplications of such great race fillies and broodmares as Leah Almahurst and Three Diamonds, has all the credentials to leave exciting young pacers. And when one of Australasia’s most successful commercial breeders, Bob McArdle of Bromac Lodge fame, says he is a big fan of He’s Watching’s progeny, you take notice. “I am thrilled with my three He’s Watching weanlings. They are alert, clean going, will often pace freelegged around the paddock and importantly, won’t touch a knee,” Bob said. “The colt out of my top race mare Tandias Courage is an outstanding colt and is by far the best she has produced.”
TANDIAS COURAGE COLT
Another factor Bob noted about his He’s Watching weanlings is that none of them are small.
“I am such a fan of the stallion and his progeny that I have told at least twenty Australian breeders and trainers, while on a recent visit to them, that they have to breed to him or get their hands on some to train.” The three Bromac Lodge weanlings being set for next year’s yearling sales include his standout colt from Tandias Courage (by Stoneridge Scooter), making it a half-brother to such top stakes performing fillies as Tatijana Bromac (1:54.2 - $215,578), Tandias Bromac (1:53.7 – $193,951) and Te Amo Bromac (1:55.8 - $147,402). The other He’s Watching weanlings are colts from Cozette Bromac (by McArdle) and Fresco Denario (by Artiscape). Cozette Bromac is a half-sister to the quality performer Cruz Bromac (1:51.6 - $158,215), while Fresco Denario is a half-sister to the sub 1:49 pacer Fake Denario (1:48.4). As a further showing of his confidence in He’s Watching, Bob intends breeding another group of top bred Bromac Lodge mares to He’s Watching for the new breeding season. Blair O’Connell is watching Blair O’Connell of Twisted Stick Lodge in Canterbury is another breeder and trainer who is a big supporter of He’s Watching. Blair has three stand-out He’s Watching weanlings which he is also setting for next year’s Christchurch yearling sales. “What I like about the He’s Watching horses is their ‘intelligence’. They don’t seem to stress and are lovely to work with,” Blair said. He also loves the way they move around the paddock, often pacing free-legged. “The real stand-out among the three is the colt from Jessica Rose. He paces everywhere and is a striking looking and full-bodied colt with brains to match. He is my favourite.” Jessica Rose (by Ok Bye) is also the dam of High Octane (1:51.1), Buy Chevron Direct (1:52.4) and Tokyo Drift (1:53.9). Blair also has a more refined but another lovely type of colt by He’s Watching from Pure Octane (a Christian Cullen daughter of Jessica Rose), along with a racy type of filly from the In The Pocket mare Dream After Dark. “Both can also pace around the paddock and I am so impressed with all three that I will definitely be going back to He’s Watching next season.”
“The real stand-out among the three is the colt from Jessica Rose. He paces everywhere and is a striking looking and full-bodied colt with brains to match. He is my favourite.”
Jackie Gibson is a He’s Watching fan Jackie and Mary Gibson of Success Stud bred their Armbro Operative mare Oh Eye See to He’s Watching and the mating has already been succesful! “The colt is a stunning individual,” stated Jackie. “Good straight legs, great temperament, paces cleanly in the paddock and took to his handling like a pro. Right from birth there’s been something very speciall about him. Without any doubts we will be looking to breed to He’s Watching this season.” Oh Eye See won over $100,000 and took a mark of 1:54.5. She is also bred in the purple being a daughter of the outstanding producer Grace Robinson.
“The colt is a stunning individual,” stated Jackie. Oh Eye See Colt
HEAVEN ROCKS.....
WHERE IT ALL STARTED
H
eaven Rocks is without doubt one of the most exciting pacers in the Southern Hemisphere.
Stuart McCormick Photo
His mix of high cruising speed, his questionable manners and seemingly bottomless ability combine to make him a horse that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go.
HEAVEN ROCKS AS A YEARLING Mendelico, Heaven Rocks’ dam, was a very good racemare for Harvey and Kaye Delmenico. How did you become associated with them? Our association with Harvey and Kaye Delemenico extends over 10 years with breeding and foaling down of their mares. When Mendelico retired we proposed a mare share arrangement with them for four foals (two each) with the purpose of securing a filly foal which we would breed on with in the future. Unfortunately we proceeded to have colts, which were then sent through the yearling sales. We will be presenting the last of these, and probably the best type, at APG Melbourne 2018. What were your reasons for breeding Mendelico to Rock N Roll Heaven? All our mares are bred on the same breeding program that we have followed for many years. It consists of our own theories (developed over many years) in conjunction with a pedigree researcher we have used for the same period of time. We would not breed a horse that did not come under this criteria and importantly
our theories and the researcher must agree. In the case of Heaven Rocks we believed the affinities created by Rock N Roll Heaven created the right blood to produce a horse of high calibre.
We sat down with Craig Judd of Benstud Standardbreds (Heaven Rocks’ breeder) to ask about Heaven Rocks’ origins. was about 95% correct.
Rock N Roll Heaven was an incredible racehorse and his size and conformation was also a perfect cross for Mendelico .
His dark colour and athleticism along with a gorgeous head had people talking but the rotation seemed to put some people off. Mark and Natalie on the other hand loved him and inspected him thoroughly several times. They were adamant that he would be clean in his gait.
What was Heaven Rocks like as a foal, both in terms of looks and personality? Heaven Rocks was a standout type, very athletic and good looking colt. He was highly intelligent and easy going. He had a presence about him and he knew he was good. It was like he had been here before.
Heaven Rocks family wasn’t particularly strong but his dam Mendelico was an outstanding mare and her half sister No More Troubles was well above average, so we thought that it would become a strong family and would be quite well received in the sales ring.
Heaven Rocks was one of the buzz horses at the yearling sale. Were you happy with the sale price of $60,000 and that he went to clients of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussens? From our point of view Heaven Rocks was stunning, although he did have a slightly rotated near fore leg.
We were very happy with the sales price and for him to end up in the All Stars stable was the icing on the cake.
We trimmed him from 2 weeks of age (every month) through to sale day and knew that it was a case of him needing to develop across the chest and by sale day he
What has it been like following his race career from Australia? In the early days the reports were that he was well above average but a little headstrong, which to be honest i found staggering because he was so easy going. Once he started to race it was obvious that Heaven Rocks was going to be a top horse.
HEAVEN ROCKS IN FULL FLIGHT
Watching him at times was frustrating, however I knew that being in the care of Mark and Natalie that he would work it out in time. His run in the three year old Harness Jewels was phenomenal. Having bred a horse of this calibre is why we breed and if his career continues on the same trajectory then Heaven Rocks will be the best horse that we have been associated with. I believe your next foal out of Mendelico is a Sportswriter colt (weanling). What is he like? Without doubt he is the nicest weanling on the farm. He is a clone of Heaven Rocks. Whenever you walk into his paddock he just stands out and everyone who has seen him comments on his athleticism and good looks. We’ve just completed our sale weanlings second round of education which includes going on the jogger, walker and lead off the motor bike and he was flawless. Sportswiter and Rock N Roll Heaven were the two standout stallion selections for Mendelico by our methodology and the resulting foals are examples of correct pedigree matching.
CONNECTIONS OF HEAVEN ROCKS AFTER HIS THREE YEAR OLD HARNESS JEWELS WIN
SPORTSWRITER
HE’S WRITING FRONT PAGE NEWS THIS SEASON H e was almost born to be an ANZAC (24th April 2007) and he has certainly put a stamp of authority on the harness racing industry in the ANZAC countries of Australia and New Zealand.
Sportswriter has written his fair share of headlines in those brief ten years. His Canadian trainer Casie Coleman converted him from a good looking yearling into the US and Canadian Two Year Old of the Year in 2009. A world record performance in capturing the elite Metro Pace in 1:49.4 had the scribes typing superlatives. Sportswriter again made headlines in June 2010 with a demolition victory in the $1 million North American Cup at Mohawk. Sadly this was Sportswriter’s final victory in an all too short career. Two months after the North American Cup win, Sportswriter was on his way to Peppertree Farm in NSW, nursing a tendon injury.
A SPORTSWRITER TWO YEAR OLD COLT HAS HIS NAME IN LIGHTS
SPORTSWRITER HAVING BEST SEASON YET
Several of Australia’s harness racing journos have spruiked this year that Lumineer, a two year old colt sired by Sportswriter, just might be the best we have seen in Australia for many, many moons.
The fertile son of Artsplace is having his best season yet as a sire - both in Australia and North America.
That colt, a December foal by the way, attracted the interest of Warrnambool horsewoman Angie McDowell and her family at the Melbourne APG Yearling Sale. The $30,000 outlaid that day has already been repaid many times over.
Depending on whether you read the USTA or Canadian two year old sires list, Sportswriter is sharing the top spot with Somebeachsomewhere (as at 22/7/17). In Australia in this current season, Sportswriter sits only beneath Somebeachsomewhere and Art Major on the two year old sires list.
Five starts for five wins and $177,980 are the things we dream about. Those five wins have been by a combined margin of some 40 metres so that tells us of the dominance of Lumineer over his rivals. In each of those five starts to date Lumineer has reeled off a 27 and change quarter..... and even better in the $300,000 APG Final when his reinsman Jason Lee opened him up for a 26.6 last quarter.
Aside from the exciting colt Lumineer, Sportswriter has also sired two Group One winning fillies in WA this season they being Tenniele Erin (from a Walton Hanover mare) and Cimorene (from a Northern Luck mare).
A long spell after his APG win should ensure this star colt will be on song for the 2018 Derbies.
With a crop of 206 foals to commence their racing careers in Australia in 2017/18, the headlines are sure to be hit again by this handsome Sportswriter.
Sportswriter will soon shoot past $2 million in season earnings in Australia and is headed for his best ever season downunder.
CONNECTIONS OF GOLD REACTOR INCLUDING MURRAY COLE (SECOND FROM LEFT)
A GOLDEN GROUP ONE
When Gold Reactor won the $100,000 Redcliffe Yearling Sales Series Final Murray Cole achieved the distinction of being the breeder of Auckland Reactor’s first Group One winner. He was kind enough to answer some of our questions. What can you tell us about Gold Reactor? He was a bit of a tall and gangly foal. I bred two Auckland Reactors that season and both were the same. They gradually filled out nicely and both will make better three year olds. Gold Reactor has a beautiful nature, a great constitution and manners. What made you choose Auckland Reactor for Channelling Gold? Basically it was the doubling up of the Albatross in both horses’ pedigrees. Auckland Reactor was an awesome horse and I don’t believe we saw the best of him in Australia. How did Harness Racing become a part of your life? I was born into it. I grew up in Auckland and spent a lot of time at Alexandra Park with my dad. I came to Australia in 1982 and had about 10 years out of harness racing before getting back into it. How many mares are you now breeding from? I bred from ten mares last season and that will likely increase to eleven this season once one of my racemares retires. Of the ten mares we got nine in foal, with Channelling Gold being the only one who is empty. The mares are split between Pepper Tree Farm in NSW and Egmont Park in Qld. DRIVER CHRIS PETROFF What do you take into account when deciding your matings? I look at the pedigree of each horse and see how it matches up. I also take into account the size of both the mare and the stallion. It does also come down to the stallion and if I like them or not. Forever Gold was an outstanding mare, what has she produced so far and what stallions are you considering for her this season? She was the best horse I have owned. Her first foal is a filly by Rock N Roll Heaven and she is currently in foal to Captaintreacherous. I am 99% certain she will go to Art Major this season.
HE’S HEADING FOR SUNSHINE….
BUT NOT THE BEACH The handsome man of harness racing, the now seven year old stallion called Sunshine Beach, is heading downunder for a third breeding season. However he is taking up residence in Northern Victoria rather than overlooking the Manukau harbour on the outskirts of Auckland.
The son of Somebeachsomewhere and the Artsplace mare Light Up has been very popular with Australian breeders so the decision has been taken to base him at Alabar’s Echuca property in Victoria.
Immediately after his last start as a three year old, which resulted in a victory in the stakes race The Progress Pace, Sunshine Beach underwent surgery for the removal of a 4.5cm stone from his bladder.
He is becoming widely acclaimed for siring stunning, athletically built foals in both Canada and here in the Southern Hemisphere.
He had raced with this as well as kidney stones for most of his three year old season.
Sunshine Beach was trained throughout his 36 start career by one of Ontario, Canada’s most respected horseman in Mark Steacy. “Sunny was probably the smartest horse I have trained,” said Mark in an interview in mid-2015. “He also had a great set of lungs and an effortless gait to go along with his determination to win.” “To beat a great racehorse like Captaintreacherous and almost beat him again in the Breeders Crown despite being parked for the entire mile showed Sunny was a very talented race horse.”
So he is a handsome man, was a hugely talented horse who raced with some pain issues (kidney stones) and is a son of North America’s leading sire of juveniles in Somebeachsomewhere, but it is his female line that might contain Sunshine Beache’s biggest asset.
A DESCENDANT OF GOLDEN MISS Golden Miss was born in USA in 1954 and is a daughter of the stallion Ensign Hanover. She was a handy racemare but through two of her daughters Malaysia and Shifting Sands she has established the most prolific family of racehorses and sires in the harness racing world over the last forty years. Golden Miss herself was the dam of the outstanding chestnut racehorse and sire Strike Out. A multitude of millionaires have evolved from the Golden Miss female descendants including: RIYADH ROYAL FLUSH HANOVER BETTORS EDGE BADLANDS NITRO TELL ALL VEGAS VACATION

As well as the fastest ever horse on a Canadian track, Dr J Hanover 1.46.8 and the Australian two year old of the year in 2015/16 – The Storm Inside (undefeated to date). These are in addition to a list of champion racehorses who have impacted our breeding industry in Australia over the last twenty or so years. The following ten stallions (all descendants of Golden Miss) have sired more than 2,750 winners in Australia since the mid 1990’s. have taken sub 1.55 records and between the twelve of them they have won $2,908,000. Now here is an amazing statistic that tells a great story. Sunshine Beach has been based in the Northern Hemisphere at Seelster farms in Ontario. He has just completed his third breeding season by covering 202 mares. This follows his first two breeding seasons when he covered 135 and 159 mares respectively. It is extremely rare for stallions to cover more mares in their second and third season than what they bred in their debut season. The answer to this amazing fact is simple and summed up in two words – stunning foals.
How can Sunshine Beach not be a successful sire when you consider these facts?
1
He is a son of one of the greatest racehorses of the 21st century – Somebeachsomewhere.
2 He is from a prolific broodmare sired by one of the greatest sires in the history of harness racing – Artsplace.
3
He descends from the Golden Miss family, a family that keeps on producing great and successful sires.
4 He is a stunning, athletic looking horse who is siring foals in his own image.
Between them those ten stallions have sired 284 pacers to have won $100,000 or more including the millionaires Smiling Shard and Karloo Mick. In fact only three of these ten stallions failed to sire a $500,000 winner. Two of them in America’s Pastime and Jr Mint didn’t get the greatest of opportunities and if Yankee Rockstar and The Storm Inside return to the race track then Rocknroll Hanover will elevate himself to the list of siring a half million dollar earner. Apart from Karloo Mick and Smiling Shard, who became racetrack millionaires, the descendants of Golden Miss have sired these champion racehorses in Australia, NO BLUE MANNA SAFE AND SOUND MANIFOLD BAY KINGSTAR PELICANRAMA GARNET RIVER BONAVISTA BAY LETS ELOPE KEPT FOR PLEASURE

– an exciting prospect for Sir Lincoln
W
hen a trainer of Brian Hughes’ standing lines up a two-yearold in a Young Guns Heat at Alexandra Park in December you can assume that two-year-old is a pretty nice horse - and that’s proving to be the case. The horse we are talking about is Aramis, a first-crop son of Sir Lincoln (Lincoln Royal). He ran fourth in that Young Guns Heat behind the glamour colts Alta Maestro and Spankem and ahead of Jack Mac – the horse who has go on to become a brilliant Group 1 winner in Western Australia. Brian Hughes, was happy with how Aramis went that night but “he was starting to lighten up a bit so I decided to chuck him out as I didn’t want to end up stuffing him” “He probably lacked a bit of strength earlier in the season but he’s developed since then. This development has shown on the racetrack. Over the last month the son of Sir Lincoln has raced three times at Alexandra Park. A first up second where he sat parked and was only just caught on the post and two emphatic victories – the last of which he cruised home in 55.9. It was the run of a horse with a bright future. “He’s a good size but not ginormous and is quite heavy set. He’s really quite muscular so can get up to speed quickly and carry it a hell of a long way.” Brian Hughes added.
“I want to give him one more run before I tip him out again for a couple of weeks. Then he’ll have a trial and a race before he hopefully has a crack at the Sires’ Stakes Heat at Cambridge on the 5th of October. He’s done everything we’ve asked of him so far. He needs to keep going but looks like he deserves his chance with the good ones.” Aramis has been the highlight of a very encouraging start to Sir Lincoln’s siring career in New Zealand. He’s laid the foundation for the new season with an impressive 21 two-year-old qualifiers including four that have placed second on race day. In Australia Sir Lincoln (Lincoln Royal) has made early breakthroughs with two of his two-year-old fillies winning at Globe Derby - both on debut. Firstly, it was Our Royal Lady winning the SA Sapling Stakes and this was followed shortly after with Tell Me Why winning a prelude of the SA Golden Nursery. Now standing at Alabar NZ, Sir Lincoln is nicely poised to press on for a successful siring career. No surprise really. After all, he’s bred to be a sire - by Mach Three out of a Beach Towel mare who is in turn out of a Cam Fella mare. This is the exact same lineage as the great Somebeachsomewhere. And let’s not forget he’s also closely related to the champion sire, Fake Left.
A ROCKNROLL DANCE MAKING AN EARLY IMPACT
It hasn’t taken long for the progeny of the outstanding US racehorse and brilliantly bred young sire A Rocknroll Dance to start making an impact with New Zealand trainers. With two-year-old winners from the first crop by A Rocknroll Dance now starting to roll in on the North American racetracks, there is growing anticipation for his progeny to quickly start showing promise here as well - and to date reports suggest that is now happening. Steven McRae The prominent Canterbury trainer Steven McRae already knows quite a lot about the progeny of A Rocknroll Dance, having handled eight of his youngsters. “I like all of them. They are robust types with a real good way of going and have a nice rolling action in the cart. Some of the girls can show some spark, which I like with fillies,” said Steve. His pick of them at this stage is a ‘go early’ filly named Nizzarda Franco, from Navara Franco, by McArdle, while he also has a lot of time for the colt Yorkshire, from the Christian Cullen mare Veste, purchased at the Australasian Yearling Sales. “He is another that goes along really well in the cart and I feel has a good future. “You would have to think that on what they have shown me to date, some of them could well become early two-year-olds,” he said. Robert Anderson Robert Anderson, one of Canterbury’s top handlers of young stock, is thrilled with the four A Rocknroll Dance yearlings he has educated.
“They are little rippers to work with, being naturals to handle and many can pace free-legged. I love the ones I have worked with. Two to really stand out have been a colt from a Mach Three halfsister to Monkey King named Rocknroll King (“he’s an absolute little cracker”) and a beautiful pacer from Fire Dancer (by Courage Under Fire), named Rakiura Rock,” said Robert. “With so many well-bred and good looking youngsters by him spread around the trainers, I can see no reason why he can’t make it as a sire.” Greg Hope Leading trainer Greg Hope has also worked with two talented A Rocknroll Dance youngsters - a colt from Victoria Rulz (by Badlands Hanover), named Rockntommy Rulz, and a colt from Tara Delight (by Bettor’s Delight) named Tango Tara. “I am more than happy with both colts. They are both lovely horses to work with, being great gaited, and both should qualify no trouble as early two-year-olds and possibly race later in the season.” “They are both not too big and I do like them both a lot”, said Greg.
Q&A BROOKLYN LODGE A leading standardbred nursery Brooklyn Lodge is unquestionably one of the finest standardbred breeding nurseries in Australia. Positioned at Bathurst in New South Wales, it is run by Janet and Doug Moore, along with their daughter and son in law Melanie and Ben Settree. We spoke to Mel and Ben to pick their brains about Brooklyn Lodge.
How long has Brooklyn Lodge been around and who started it? Brooklyn Lodge was started in 1980 at it’s original location at Aberdeen. In 1999 the Aberdeen property was sold to a throughbred breeder and we shifted to our current 1700 acre property at Bathurst. How many mares are bred at Brooklyn Lodge and how many foals are born each year? That’s a bit of a tough question to answer! It does vary every year. We generally foal down around 160 foals each year. In addition to the standardbreds we do also do some stock horses as well. What is the best horse you have bred or raised? This is an even tougher question to answer! The richest horse we have bred would be Caribbean Blaster who was an extremely good horse, winning a Victoria Cup and a Chariots Of Fire amongst many CARIBBEAN BLASTER other wins. However we have been lucky to be involved in some of Australia’s best families. The Willing Whiz family has been very good to us as has Ray and Fay Wisbey’s Taurus Lady family. Then you have Shoutaloud who has been a magnificent broodmare plus we now have some of Emilio and Mary Rosati’s best mares on the property, that produced some very good horses. Could you explain the process you use to pick stallions for all your mares? Our stallion choice depends greatly on the amount of freddo frogs! For us there are three main areas we focus on:
• Bloodlines – This is really important and we have a person who does a lot of research and helps us out. • Physical traits of the mare and stallions – Once again this is hugely important as we are trying to produce an athlete. • Commerciality – Finally we breed to sell and thus we need to produce horses that will sell well at the yearling sale. Deciding on a stallion for each mare is definitely a multi-faceted equation. What are the important elements in raising a horse? This is something we really pride ourselves on. We believe that you have to raise a horse like a horse and like the athlete you want it to become. We raise them in big paddocks and in big groups. Our paddocks that we raise the young horses in are about 120 acres and we will have 50 weanlings in that paddock. We have their water at one end and we feed them at the other. This is important as it ensures they get plenty of natural excerise. The property itself is ideal and Janet and Doug deserve all the credit for that as when they spent many months researching properties until they found this place. In terms of raising a horse you also have to feed them right. We spend a lot of time on nutrition and we won’t compromise on this. We research our pastures and then adjust our feed accordingly. We feel we do get it right more often than not – seven of the last ten Bathurst Gold Crown winners were raised at Brooklyn Lodge. Do you have a favourite mare on the farm and if so what makes her so special? Ben: My favourite horse is a gelding called Bourgeoisie. He is by River Khan out of Classic Elise and he was born the same year as Emjayem Grand. I trained them both and I actually drove Bourgeoisie in the Bathurst Gold Crown that Emjayem Grand won.
Ash Brennan Photo
MELANIE SETTREE
Bourgeoisie had plenty of problems throughout his career but I have never had a horse that gave his absolute all like he did. Mel: I have so many! If I had to nominate one though it would be Reggae Miss. She is just a treasure. She has done such a good job as a broodmare and it is always my challenge to get her in foal each season. She currently lives in a paddock with horses such as Tailamade Lombo, Protikori and Lilac Stride.
To those that perhaps don’t breed to sell, can you explain the thrill you get when a horse you have sold wins a big race? For us it doesn’t matter if it’s a Bathurst Gold Crown or an R0 at Dubbo, we always get a big thrill when a horse we have bred or raised wins a race.
we breed them and raise them right. Then once they are sold it is out of our hands and it is up to the new owner and their trainer to continue on the journey and maximise that horse’s ability.
We really enjoy congratulating that owner who purchased one of our horses and then he or she wins a race. If they don’t get a result then they won’t come back. Breeding and selling horses is a journey –
FOUR LESSONS We asked Mel, Ben, Janet and Doug for some lessons that they have learnt along the way.
“Do you want to eat it or race it?” About 45 years ago Professor Hutchinson came out to look at a racehorse and while he was there Janet showed him a yearling that she thought was big and strong and wonderful. Professor Hutchinson looked at the yearling and said “Do you want to eat it or race it?” The horse was simply too fat and his point was clear. Horses are athletes and you have to raise them accordingly.
“The more you know, the more you don’t know anything” This came through one of Mel’s lectures when she was studying childhood teaching and it is reflected throughout our industry as well. There is always more to learn and that is something we continually do at Brooklyn Lodge.
“If it was easy, any silly bastard would do it” Ben’s first boss gave him these words of wisdom and they are certainly true in the horse industry. Things get tough at times but you just have to remember, “If it was easy, any silly bastard would do it!”
Solutions come from anywhere. Sometimes they are right in front of your face.
Many years ago when Brooklyn Lodge was still based at Scone, they had a person called Johnny Adnun working for them. Johnny was a really good worker but he was deaf and dumb, so to communicate he and the other staff learnt a sort of sign language and actions. One day the staff were pondering about what to do when they had a bad foaling and needed to raise a mare up – would they build some sort of hydraulic table? Johnny was trying to communicate with them about a solution and in the end they got what he was saying – use the tractor to raise the mare up. The solution was right in front of their faces!
A MAJESTICAL SEASON By any measure, Majestic Son has had an outstanding season with his two-year-old trotters in New Zealand. These two-year-olds are his first sizeable crop for a number of years - following several years of having been available by frozen semen only. In 2016/17 Majestic Son sired a New Zealand record eight individual two-year-old trotting winners for the season. Breaking the record set by Sundon 17 years ago – and he did it with 40 less foals than what Sundon had. In New Zealand in the 2016/17 season, two-year-old trotters ran in the first three in races a total of 62 times. Remarkably, 40 of these times were by progeny of Majestic Son. An undoubted highlight of the season was his siring the winning trifecta in the NZ Sires’ Stakes Final at Addington. The Phil Williamson trained Majestic Man was one of the very best of his age in New Zealand and was victorious in this feature, heading home in B J Lindenny and More Shades Of Gold. One of New Zealand’s leading trotting trainers, Phil Williamson has developed a real affinity with the progeny of Majestic Son. He unleashed three Majestic Son two-year-

the performances of his three-year-olds in New Zealand in 2016/17.
All were very impressive winners, headed by the exciting Springbank Lachie, from the Harness Jewels winner Kylie Ree (by Monarchy), who brilliantly won the New Zealand Trotting Stakes. He was purchased for $60,000 at the New Zealand Premier Yearling Sales.
He had just seven live foals that were three-year-olds in 2016/17. These where the result of frozen semen breedings prior to the return of Majestic Son to New Zealand.
Majestic Man was another Majestic Son winner to greatly impress Phil, winning three races. He is from the Holdonmyheart mare Love Hate Revenge, while the colt Majestic Connies also impressed, winning and being placed in just three starts, being from the Continentalman mare Sunny Connie. “I like all of them. They are all good gaited, thick set and strong to work with. Majestic Son can leave horses like this,” said Phil. “Importantly, Majestic Son leaves the right type to race as young trotters and another plus is that they usually come with a nice attitude, giving trainers something they can work with. It is what you want to have in young horses, especially trotters.” Phil plans to set all three for stakes racing next year and with expected improvement could add to his already impressive training strike rate in New Zealand’s feature trotting races. Looking forward to the overall prospects as three-year-olds of this first large crop for Majestic Son, it is interesting to note
Of these seven foals, four of them won in the 2016/17 season, including the Northern Oaks winner Kissmeinloaded. Of the other three foals one qualified while another, All Over The Stars was placed and looked a very exciting prospect before being injured. Ominously for those looking to compete against Majestic Son’s big crop of two-yearolds going forward, none of these threeyear-olds had won as two-year-olds – only one had raced. A big year from the 136 Majestic Sons that will be three-year-olds next season looks very much on the cards. He also has a follow up crop of another 110 foals that will be two-year-olds in the new season. From very limited numbers in Australia Majestic Son headed the overall trotting sires premiership in 2015/16. Incredibly, he looks set to repeat the dose in 2016/17. Majestic Son is extremely well placed for his influence on trotting in this part of the world to continue to grow.

Peak, Alabar’s young trotting sire, already has some exciting young trotters poised to make an impact from his first crop of just 28 foals.
Peter and Leone are also working with another impressive Peak, a rising two-yearold filly from Rattle (by Armbro Invasion), who is a half-sister to Spell, which they have named Duchess.
The bonus for Peak is that three of New Zealand’s most outstanding horsemen, Peter Jones, Tim Butt and Paul Nairn, are training some of his progeny and are already singing his praises as a promising sire.
“She also is a lovely type, again being a chestnut. We haven’t done much with her as yet but she is also quite exciting.”
Peter Jones really likes his Peaks Peter and Leone Jones are really excited about the potential shown by their Peaks. Heading the list is Speak, a striking looking rising two-year-old by Peak from the well-bred Dream Vacation mare Spell (4 wins), a granddaughter of the great trotting mare Tussle (38 wins) which Peter drove during her illustrious career. “He is a stunning looking colt, very much like his sire,” said Peter. “He has a great way of going and hardly touches the ground when he trots. I think he is a wee bit special.” Peter said the colt has recently grown quite tall and he will leave it up to the horse to tell him whether or not he will make a two-year-old during the new season.
Peter and Leone also have an “exceptional and lovely looking weanling filly by Peak,” which like the other two is very easy to work with. They “love all three Peaks” they have handled. Another Peak standout Tim Butt, who trained Peak himself to Group 1 successes during his racing stint in New Zealand, is very excited with his rising two-year-old Peak colt from the Sundon mare Scuffle, an unraced daughter of Tussle. “He is one of the most promising young trotters I have had for a while. Not only is he a lovely horse to look at but is very good gaited like his sire and, importantly, wants to do it,” said Tim. Tim has also handled other youngsters by Peak and is bullish about Peak’s future as a sire. “He has all the attributes to make it as a
sire, being beautifully gaited with looks to match, and many of his stock have that bit of scope about them.” Paul Nairn – likes Peak’s French blood When master trotting trainer Paul Nairn has a young horse he likes then it is bound to make an impact as a racehorse. Paul has been working with a beautifully bred chestnut trotting filly by Peak from his top mare Enthuse (by Gee Whiz) named Avalanche Peak. “I like the French blood Peak has and also liked the fact he was such a very good gaited horse,” said Paul. “The filly is a really nice type, with her sire’s nice head, and comes from a very good family.” Enthuse is the dam of Enthusiast (11 wins), Call You Later (9 wins) and Inspire (9 wins), so Avalanche Peak certainly belongs to an immediate family of top class trotters. Paul backed these thoughts up by breeding two of his own mares to Peak last season.

Shadow Play is casting a Long Shadow in 2017
Dave Landry Photo
The twelve year old handsome black stallion Shadow Play is enjoying probably his best season yet as a sire in Australia. Apart from the fact that his muscle bound daughter Lady Shadow has recently zoomed past the $2 million mark in career earnings in North America (just the 14th mare to achieve such a feat in the history of North American harness racing), Shadow Play is sitting in fourth position on the Australian two year sires list (14/7/17). Behind him are some impressive names in the stallion ranks of the Southern Hemisphere including Bettors Delight, Mach Three, American Ideal, Rock N Roll Heaven And Roll With Joe. His twenty one individual two year old winners have earned just shy of $400,000 (as of 11th July) and include the Group One winning colts Play The Boys 1.56.2 and Castalong Shadow 1.55.1. Play The Boys, who was a stunning individual at the 2016 WA yearling sales and sold for $27,000, showed back in April that he wasn’t just a “Hollywood film star” with his flashy looks but also possessed some serious athletic ability. He won both his heat and final of the $100,000 W.A sales classic. He is bound to return to the racetrack as a three year old as a serious Derby candidate. Although they race on opposite sides of the continent, Play The Boys and the extra smart Victorian pacer General Dodge are closely related as their mothers are half-sisters. The other Group One winning son of Shadow Play is the Lightgow, NSW trained colt Castalong Shadow. He was purchased as a weanling by Lithgow couple Geoff and Betty Simpson from the paddocks of Brooklyn Lodge at Bathurst. This strapping colt was bred by Sydney based breeders David Lewis and Len Favier. His “day in the sun” came on the 25th of March at Bathurst when he trounced his rivals in the Bathurst Gold Crown final to provide Geoff and Betty Simpson with their biggest thrill in harness racing. A week later Castalong Shadow proved the Bathurst win wasn’t any fluke with another victory in the Group Three Rod Fitzpatrick Memorial Stakes at Menangle.
The strongly built colt is the first foal of the unraced Grinfromeartoear mare Leslie Jay. This mare was bred by David’s brother Peter from his talented broodmare Reggae Miss. Leslie Jay, although unraced is unique in that she has double crosses of three of the most influential broodmares ever bred in USA – they being a 4 x 6 cross to Golden Miss, a 4 x 5 cross to Breath O’ Spring and a 5 x 5 cross to Hobby Horse Tar. Reggae Miss was a way better than average race mare, winning on 18 occasions, 6 of those victories at Harold Park including a NSW sire’s stakes final. She has now produced 6 winners from 8 foals including the Australian two year old filly of the year, Lady Euthenia, who retired with earnings exceeding $460,000. Lady Euthenia now has another proud claim to fame, she is the dam of the highest priced Standardbred yearling ever sold in Australia when her Bettors Delight colt was knocked down for $245,000 at the Sydney APG sales in February this year. The third dam of Leslie Jay is called Lady Ex and she used to reside at Alabar’s Victorian farm in the late 1980’s, prior to semen transport being introduced.
CASTALONG SHADOW
ELSU T
ALTA CHRISTIANO HEADING BACK WEST
he excitement machine, the horse who would make Quinny (Im Themightyquinn) stretch his neck on the training track, Alta Christiano is heading back across the Nullarbor for a breeding season. The imposing son of Christian Cullen will take up residence at Doctor Trevor Lindsay’s Lark Hill Vets’ property, only about 10 Kilometres from where he was trained by Gary Hall Snr.
A retirement well earned
E
lsu has been a good sire, having sired the winners of close to $20 million and approaching 50 individual $100,000 winners.
Trevor who breeds, owns and races a number of harness racing horses including the million dollar mare Bettor Cover Lover, is also a shareholder in Alta Christiano, so when the opportunity presented itself for the stallion to return to the West for a season he quickly convinced the syndicate manager Gary Hall that Lark Hill vets was the best home for the 2013 WA Derby winner.
Chilli Palmer and Arms Of An Angel have probably been his best performers to date although his first crop son Anvils Best Ever may have been the one he was looking for had he not been struck down by illness and then injury.
Speaking of that 2013 WA Derby, it was almost unbelievable that he won it on an eight week preparation.
In his first year, before these sires got underway, Elsu had 16 individual two-year-old winners – but he couldn’t do that against the progeny of Art Major and Bettor’s Delight.
By the way he didn’t just win it, he smashed his opposition by 14 metres, coming from the ten hole to loop the field and win for fun. It wasn’t a bad field either and included My Hard Copy, Caesar Augustus (the Queenslander who had finished third in the VIC Derby beating home Lennytheshark) and Northview Punter. Unfortunately Alta Christiano’s racing career was shortened with lameness issues, but his record of 18 starts for 13 wins indicated that he would have joined the star studded millionaires club had he remained sound. Breeders and owners around Australia eagerly await the debut of his oldest progeny, two year olds in the 2017/18 season. That first crop number 76 and included seven that were consigned to the 2017 APG sales. Six of those were sold for an average of $13,300. Leading WA trainers Ross Olivieri, Aldo Cortopassi and Debbie Padberg signed the sales docket for one each, whilst brilliant young NSW horseman Chris Geary also landed a colt from the Sydney sales that was from the same Black Watch family as Alta Christiano himself. Peter Tilbrook, who broke in the filly for Ross Olivieri, described her as natural. “She paced free legged from day one and was so easy to break in. You couldn’t help but like her.” Alta Christiano will command a service fee of $2,200 including GST for this season, with loyalty discounts for breeders who have supported him in the past three seasons.
Elsu just had the misfortune to be at stud at a time in our history when several super sires have dominated all others.
We were thrilled to see Elsu record a Group 1 credit as a broodmare sire with Raukapuka Ruler winning this year’s Great Northern Derby. He is the first foal of one of his best fillies in Miss Elsie. Life is full of ironies – and the Elsu story is no different. In 2005, Alabar came out victorious in a heated battle of the farms to purchase Elsu. In 2006, when our powder was already spent from purchasing Elsu (and also Grinfromeartoear), the stallion that became available was Bettor’s Delight. Anyway, the decision has now been made to retire Elsu from stud duties. He could have bred on for another couple of years and we’ve also had overtures from several smaller farms to stand him. We will always be grateful to Joyce Walters, Alison Glasgow, Annette Hudson and their fellow former owners for going with our proposal to purchase Elsu. We promised them we’d always look after him and treat him with respect. Honouring that promise is what we are now doing. Elsu is one of Australasia’s greatest champions. Who could forget his staggering victory in the Hunter Cup or his total dominance of the Interdominions at Auckland? Not us.

MACH THREE A CHAMPION SIRE. A SIRE OF CHAMPIONS It’s now been six months since the awful day that we lost Mach Three to injury. Horses of Mach Three’s brilliance as a racehorse and prowess as a sire and sire of sires are very rare indeed. However, everyone in the horse business knows that you need to dust yourself off and look forward. On one hand we are doing that. We’re truly excited about our new stallions and we’re really enjoying the burgeoning success of our young sires. Even with losing Mach Three, the Alabar roster is probably the strongest it’s ever been. But on the other hand it’s still very raw. We still haven’t moved on to the extent that we’ve been able to bring ourselves to put another horse in Mach Three’s paddock. It will always be Mach Three’s paddock. It was wonderful to see Mach Three recently inducted into the Canadian Hall Of Fame. He well and truly deserved it. Congratulations to the Muscara family. It is also great that Mach Three’s presence will be felt for some time to come. His last crop of foals will hit the ground this spring. Some will sell as weanlings in 2018. Many will sell as yearlings in 2019. And quite a few will kick off their race careers early in 2020. In terms of this stud season, the issue of any mares in foal to Mach Three not producing a live foal needs to be addressed. In regard to free returns we do have some of his frozen semen in Australia which we will be endeavouring to use to settle at least some of his free returns. There is no Mach Three frozen semen in New Zealand so, if you do have the misfortune of your mare in foal to him not producing a live foal, then please contact us so we can work through the alternatives. Please be aware that in both Australia and New Zealand, prompt notification (and also possibly a vet certificate to verify the foal loss) will be required in order to satisfy our partners in Mach Three.
