Studio SCIarc Fall 2005 Material, Design & Build Stratigies

The final installation for the first semester first year undergraduates is a studio installation that is located in a area within SCIarc. Our installation is based on creating a structural system out of a sheet material. The challenge was to take a repeating unit and have it express both structure and design as a single element. It now remains as a permanent installation at SCIarc.

Studio SCIarc Fall 2007 Building Structure and Systems

The project program was to develop a horticultural center for Pierce College in Woodland Hills CA. The program included a school facility as well as a cold green house. Located in the San Fernando Valley where the average temperature range is 80+ degree’s fahrenheit for 6 months out of the year, and 3 of those months in a 90+ degree average, the need for a cold green house was necessary. The cold greenhouse operates off of a water misting system, which is stored in an underground basin, that is used to regulate the temperature and humidity within the greenhouse. The horticultural center offers the use of classrooms, science labs, administrative offices, as well as a lecture hall for the horticulture department. This project has been taken from studio into design development as well as into construction documents.

Studio SCIarc Spring 2009 Coachella Art | Music Festival

The coachella studio also known as the Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Studio was a studio commision by golden voice for a art piece for the Coachella Art and Music Festival. The studio started off with 6 teams with individual proposals, and from the 6 the final installation was chosen. The studio then worked together to trouble shoot and fabricate the final prduct that was then installed at the festival. The Elastic Plastic Sponge was made with pvc pipes and is lit by various lights with purple gels. The pipe structure was created off of the same “egg” unit that was tied into a long flat sheet that was then manipulated into the final sweeping structure. The structure also alternated between a misting system during the day to a purple light during the evening.

Brechtel Architecture 2009 - 2010: Designer The Grand

The slat wall is a proposal that utilizes the use of a CNC Machine to create custom parts with minimal post production processing. The wall is composed of 208 vertical sections of prefinished plywood that is then divided into 5 sections to increase yeild from a standard 4’x8’ sheet of material. By taking advantage of the rapid prototyping machiner the slat wall quickly becames a type of “kit of parts” open to a virtually limitless choice of materials, colors, and finishes.
