STYLE GUIDE The vivid trend has simmering couple of

pattern been gently for the past seasons and

is set to boil over for SS13. This navy patterned jacket and short combo is a great example of the not so subtle head to toe print look. Neutral Derby shoes and a white shirt help to give the look a fresh appeal.

Designers are using colour, texture and pattern to create a more fun approach to traditional tailoring. Here a pristine white shirt is paired with a sharp grey suit. The overall feel is sophisticated but the absence of a tie and addition of off-white

suede shoes mean that this look would work as well for an interview as it would for a party. A shirt like this is a wearable work of art and the trend for masculine florals is set to stay strong for the rest of the year. Menswear has moved on from the retro Hawaiian phase and SS13 collections embrace more subdued paisley and chintz motifs. Get on board by choosing one floral statement piece per outfit. 6

INTERVIEW:

PAUSE MEETS:

SONS OF HEROES

Interviewed by Katie Handy-Beith

For contemporary menswear brand Sons of Heroes success on a huge scale was never expected but has certainly been accomplished. With an established background in the industry, the Sons of Heroes duo bring a positive and confident vibe to menswear for those who are rock and roll at heart. The collections have brought about a diverse celebrity following and the likes of 50 Cent, Trey Songz, Justin Bieber and Muse have all been spotted wearing Sons of Heroes. PAUSE caught up with Sons of Heroes, discussing their SS13 collection and their plans for the future.

How did Sons of Heroes come about? Sons of Heroes came about from a desire to bring a bold, positive, confident attitude to contemporary menswear, whilst paying respect to Britain’s heroic past and the formidable people who played a part in it. What are the inspirations behind your SS13 collection? For SS13 Sons of Heroes paid tribute to working class tribes and the creativity born within deprived times and areas. As well as taking 18

|

PAUSE

inspiration from the continual reinvention, musical innovations and striking visual presentation provided by David Bowie and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust, all mashed up with the political unrest from the 1980s along with the strong sport influences of the time. What excites you about the fashion industry? What excites me the most I guess is not the industry, but the impact that clothing can have on people’s daily lives, creating and producing something that gives somebody

confidence and self belief, or just simply putting a smile on someone’s face cannot be matched. We have been blessed with a large and diverse

celebrity following, which I am forever grateful for, and never expected. What menswear designers inspired you and why? During my teens in the early 90s is when I became really interested in fashion, during that time the underground Rave scene was kicking off and at the forefront of this movement for fashion was the UK designer John Richmond. Alongside his collection Destroy he was dressing everybody from Madonna to the Rolling Stones and John was my first and most important inspiration. A few years down the line I ended up working with John for a good number of years, prior to starting Sons of Heroes.

Sons of Heroes is designed to a positive, confident attitude contemporary menswear. How do remain positive in this tough climate?

bring to you economic

Remaining positive is extremely tested at times, especially through these tough economic times, but it really depends on what drives you that makes the difference. If you do something for the sheer pleasure opposed to achieving an end goal, it certainly makes it easier to remain positive. Passion, drive, integrity, love and a little stupidity also helps in remaining positive. What plans do you have for 2013? Plans for 2013 are to remain true to ourselves, remain positive and expand the brand into new territories, whilst improving design and quality. 2013 is a very important year for Sons of Heroes and I feel very excited about it.

PAUSE ADVICE:

LOOK GOOD,

SPEND LESS Words by Kacion Mayers

Photographer: Benjamin Glean Stylist: Samantha Ria Assistant Stylist: Conor Merrygold Grooming: Lungi Lee

A common misconception is that to achieve a great look, spending a fortune is compulsory a mindset completley out of sync with the majority of our budgets. However your style shouldn’t and doesn’t have to be defined by its label. You can be stylish yet sparing with this low cost look the team at PAUSE have arranged for you. 20

Blazer: £ 25

- beyondretro.com Shopping in vintage stores is one of

the best ways to save bucks. As well as maintaining your fashionisto crown on a budget, your highly unlikely to spot other people in the pieces you source. This 1980s casual grey blazer from Beyond Retro; at the bargain price of £25, can change a cool casual to a smart casual outfit with ease. Don’t just raid vintage stores, your older family members wardrobes conceal the best timeless hidden treasures of fashion.

Shirt : £ 26

- topman.com This 100% cotton Topman Short sleeved shirt compliments the neutral trousers with a colour and fit ignorant to whatever is in. And at just £26, it’s a fair price for a wardrobe staple. Buying in a smaller size will give

you a style leaning towards a tailored fit. However, buying in a larger size will give you a baggy fit, on trend and great for layering this season.

Trousers: £ 14.99 - hm.com An easy way to look good for less in the long run is to have a versatile wardrobe. Items that can be recycled and remain fresh with alternate outfits save you from buying new clothes and season and is a money sparing style success must. These £14.99 beige ankle lengths from H&M justify this with a neutral colour and a simple fit making it easy to mix and match with different styles.

Daley burst onto the scene with his first UK single in 2012, ‘Remember Me’. Originating from Manchester, he has been around since 2010, when he worked with musical phenomenon Gorillaz. His music has a unique sound with mixtures of soul, R&B and ambient vibes. Song writing is one of many other talents he

exhibits, also playing the piano can be added to the long list. PAUSE catches up with Daley to discuss his take on fashion, where he gets his inspiration from and an insight to his much anticipated new album which will be released this year. PAUSE

25

INTERVIEW:

“I’ve come up with the term, ‘future throwback soul’ for my music... It takes the good things, the nostalgia and the things that people love about R&B and soul.”

Recently you have brought out your first UK single, ‘Remember Me’ featuring Jessie J, how did that come about? Remember me came about through me being in the studio and just having fun. I wanted to have fun with the 90s sound and the tunes that I loved from the 90s, R&B and dance wise. I wanted to just give a nod to that kind of music. I was playing around with two tracks, Bad Boy ‘Remember Me’ and Mica Paris ‘Should’ve Known Better’. I took musical elements from both of them and put them together and 26

just wrote the song around it, I loved it. I was thinking of someone who could really sing the female sample, the only person I think that could pull that off was Jessie. I’ve known Jessie for a few years, we both met when we were completely unknown and just doing open mic and jam nights. Initially I thought it was not going to happen, but she contacted me before it went to radio and a few days later it was done.

You had your first mainstream breakthrough as a guest artist with Gorillaz, describe your journey from then [2010] till today. Where I was at in 2010 with Gorillaz was literally my first my ever kind of venture into the music industry. I had just been signed and just started writing my album. I learnt a lot from the experience, working Damon Albarn and the whole production that Gorillaz is. A lot of

my first experiences with certain things were done with the Gorillaz, so my first world tour, my first arena, and my first music video. It was almost like a crash course in being a musician. You’re getting to do everything for this one project, I learnt a lot like taking your time in the studio and doing what feels right rather than agonising over every last detail. So yeah, it was a good start.

You have released two EPs so far, which have hints of soul and R&B, how would you describe your genre of music? I’ve come up with the term, ‘future throwback soul’ for my music because I kept getting asked questions like ‘sum up your sound in three words’ and I found it really hard then this phrase sort of came up. It takes the good things, the nostalgia and the things that people love about R&B and

soul, that has always been there from the past and then I try and fuse it with a sound that is current and feels like it’s from now rather than sounding old. Your hair has become one of your staple looks, in terms of style and fashion what are your biggest influences? It’s weird; I don’t follow fashion and don’t particularly follow trends. I find it hard to keep up with them. I think

“I think my influences are subconsciously from my childhood from super heroes and films. That is subtly translated into how I dress.”

PAUSE

INTERVIEW: my influences are subconsciously from my childhood from super heroes to science fiction films. That is subtly translated into how I dress, I wear a lot of black and I literally think that it is because I was obsessed with Batman when I was kid and that is filtered into how I dress today. In my head I dress myself as a super villain, with a strong aesthetic look. You are often pictured in bold black statement outfits, how did it come about and why has this look become so significant to you? It touches on the influences and sub consciousness of superheroes. Also I’m very adamant about having an identity, in terms of my music, my sound and the way I look. I just think it’s very easy to be washed away in the music world, although I have never dressed to make people remember me. It’s gradually become something where I don’t know somebody 28

PAUSE

“In my head I dress myself as a super villain, with a strong aesthetic look.” who looks like this or wears this in that way. That sort of directs the way I look and I know what I like and don’t like. Glasses can complete a look, how do you use yours to compliment your outfits? I just like interesting eye wear and I feel like it became part of my look. I collect them and whenever I’m getting ready I just see what works and what doesn’t. I don’t always wear them. I have been known to wear sunglasses at silly times, like in the club but I feel no shame about that anymore. Doing shows and gigs must be a huge part of your life now. In terms of your stage outfits; do you choose comfort over style? I like to keep it simple when I’m on stage, because I do

need to be comfortable but whatever I’m wearing I try not to be too constricted or wear too many layers because it inhibits my performance. So I try and keep it simple but still stick my own style, such as wearing glasses, dark colours and whatever feels right. If you could create a new wardrobe with clothes from only ONE the UK and another designer, who would it coming out in the be and why? States. Callum, 22, works in a creative agency in East London, and has a busy week ahead. Dressing for Spring can be a challenge with the weather varying daily. But Callum’s wardrobe is ready for any occasion.

{ Monday }

Recovering from a weekend that involved a lot of partying in some of London’s most exclusive clubs, Callum spends his Monday chilling out in Limehouse café, preparing for his big presentation to a corporate firm on Wednesday. His relaxed mood is reflected in his apparel. His varsity jacket will keep away the light wind blowing about, but he can easily take it off if the weather suddenly heats up. His mood is reflected in his clothing – casual, relaxed, and cool.

hard at work securing the final details for his pitch tomorrow. His bright leopard print jumper paired with his boots not only shows that he is creative with what he wears, but also he likes to mix a playful and serious look. Also, the absence of a jacket shows the approaching warmer weather. His job requires him to be comfortable at all times, but this does not mean he can’t inject some of his personality into what he is wearing. STYLE GUIDE

{ Thursday }

Thursday’s warmer weather and longer daylight hours inspires Callum’s look. He’s off to the Southbank for dinner with friends, so he wants to be presentable and fashionable. The shoes smarten up his look, and the blazer will ensure he doesn’t feel the cold if the temperature suddenly drops when the sun sets.

Success! The pitch went well and his company have won the contract. Callum is discussing the week with friends at Boxpark. Later he will head off to East Village for a celebratory drink, and a little dance. The changeable weather means that Callum has to prepare for anything. His canary yellow jacket will keep him warm, whilst attracting all the right attention. But Callum doesn’t care about the weather; his week has been a triumph.

INTERVIEW:

this season stylish guy:

KYLE LO MONACO Interviewed by Joyce LaBelle Dorcely-Bissingou Photographed: Christina Ebenezer

What determines your outfit for the day, is it your mood, weather or your plans for the day?

I’d say that it’s a mixture of all of those components. Each day I like to play a different character; sometimes I’m like an alien, I always focus on popular icons and figures on earth to help me determine that human form. Today, I actually feel like James Bond! What are the most essential items in your wardrobe? Anything with leather, gold garments... Skinny jeans are a must for me, and oversized t-shirts. When you design clothes, do you design for yourself or for an alter ego? I always design for myself. I also do conceptual designs, which is more high

end but I think I’ll probably take that 40

PAUSE

up more in the future. Every season, I go through the current collections and just pick out every garment I like then combine all of the different garments from like, Burberry or Prada and make something that I would wear. Who is your favourite designer? Alexander McQueen is a designer that I will always love. What are your main influences in your style, and what inspires your personal style? I don’t focus too much on celebrities. I’d say that people on the street are my inspiration but I don’t really have a personal style because every day, my outfits are completely different. Like I said, today I’m James Bond and tomorrow will be more of an edgy look.

Do you have any signature looks when styling? I’m more of an eccentric stylist, it gives me the freedom to do things out

think never think Tight

of the ordinary. I get people coming to me and saying “can you style my shoot? You always bring that one statement eccentric piece” and that has sort of built my reputation.

What sort of shoots do you like styling? Something that’s eccentric and couture! Again, it gives me freedom to do something more creative and out of the ordinary. Have you attended any fashion shows this year? Which was your favourite and why? I attended London collections for men, earlier this month and Fashion East. I particularly loved the Agi & Sam show because I think that their tailoring and prints work really well, and them bringing out the dogs on stage was a real emphasis on British culture.

it can be styled well and I’ve liked elastic cuffed jeans. I that if you can tight roll it.. roll it!

What have you got planned for 2013? More high street fashion and more conceptual designs. I also do music and I’m going to be doing a lot of collaborations with other artists, so there is music to come.

“Alexander McQueen is a designer that i will always love.”

What are your hottest looks for SS13? Definitely all white garments, Men’s gladiator sandals and Gold. Can you give PAUSE a list of your top 3 fashion “faux-pas”... I’ve always hated dolly shoes! I don’t like socks and sandals, although I PAUSE
