The impact of reading on cognitive decline
Aging and change go hand in hand. Although some may bemoan the gray hairs that start to arrive or stiffness in the knees that seems to sneak up on a person in middle age, such concerns are not necessarily enough to lose sleep over. However, many people 50 or older are nervous about the potential for cognitive issues like dementia as they grow older.
The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that 6.7 million people have Alzheimer’s disease in the United States. The Alzheimer Society of Canada estimates that there were 733,040 people living with dementia in the country as of January 1, 2024. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can rob people of their memories, personalities and abilities to live satisfying, independent lives. While it may not be impossible to prevent all cognitive issues completely, there is reason to believe that reading could be an ally in cognitive care.
The American Academy of Neurology says that reading stimulates the brain and has been shown to slow down cognitive decline in old age. Reading also may help slow down memory loss.
The powers of reading were noticed more than 10 years ago when a 2013 study from researchers at Emory University measured readers’ MRI scans as they read books. They found the deeper readers went into a story, the
more areas of their brains were activated. This activity remained elevated for several days after participants finished their books. The more a person reads, the stronger complex networks in the brain become.
Additional evidence that reading can help the brain was noted by researchers at the Texas A&M School of Public Health. A 2024 study suggests that older people with mild cognitive impairment who engage in high levels of activities like reading, hobbies and word games have better memory, working memory, attention, and processing speed than those who do not take part in such endeavors. Furthermore, a 2021 study published in Neurology found that high levels of cognitive activity, like reading and writing letters, can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by five years among those age 80 and over.
Reading can keep brains functioning optimally and potentially delay age-related cognitive decline.

Do sleep needs change as adults grow older?
Adults know much about their health changes as they grow older, but health experts note that sleep requirements generally remain the same throughout adulthood. According to the National Institute on Aging, older adults need roughly the same amount of sleep as all adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the recommended amount of sleep for adults is at least seven hours each day, and various organizations recommend adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Those recommendations can promote optimal health into one’s golden
years, but that advice is not being heeded by a significant portion of the adult population. The CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) tracked the sleeping habits of men and women between 2013 and 2022 and ultimately found that 37.5 percent of men and 36 percent of women were not getting enough sleep during that time period. The percentage of individuals not getting enough sleep was particularly high among adults between the ages of 39 and 64, among whom nearly four in 10 were falling short of the recommended daily amount of sleep.

Gunnison High School students make a difference through clubs
Lucia Handmaker
Gunnison High School students have found a way to give back to Gunnison while learning from the process — through clubs. GHS is home to a myriad of clubs, all of which create a sense of community and have formed bonds between students as they are able to connect over shared experiences and ideals. However, many of these clubs do more than just establish friendships. Honing communication skills, teaching how to effectively work in a team, fostering creative thinking and volunteering are all benefits of participating in clubs. These are all extremely important, but at GHS there is an emphasis on volunteering. Led by the hard work and compassion of students, GHS is using our clubs to improve our world.
For example, the Legion Club is centered around providing much-needed help to soldiers, veterans and U.S. military branches. This club has performed many hours of community service, raised money, organized donations and honored many local veterans. From cleaning up the cemetery to sending Christmas stockings to military hospitals, the Legion Club has proved time and time again that they are willing to go above and beyond to honor those who have served our country. All of these students’ work has showcased the respect and pride students have for veterans in Gunnison and beyond.
Another club devoted to service is the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).
LULAC has worked at the places that need them the most, including the Gunnison Food Pantry, the Gunnison Community Thanksgiving Dinner, the Rocky Mountain Food Bank and the Homeward Bound Homeless Shelter in Grand Junction. By volunteering at these places, the students who are a part of LULAC are showing Gunnison High School’s generosity and desire to make a difference. These students have put time, effort, and resources into making Gunnison a better place and helping improve the quality of life of those who are suffering.
National Honor Society (NHS) is a club that is based on student academic and extracurricular success by teaching leadership, compassion and hard work. To be eligible to join NHS, students must complete a minimum of eight hours of community service per academic quarter. This is incredible as it not only helps our school and builds Gunnison’s volunteer network, but it also teaches students to help those who need it. In addition to the required volunteer work, NHS organizes annual fundraisers to raise money for a variety of charities. The combination of these activities helps students grow as both individuals and community members.
Although all of Gunnison is proud of our students’ acts, no one’s more happy about it than GHS principal, Jim Woytek. When interviewed, Mr. Woytek said,
“The best learning is done in service to others,” he said. “It opens our experiences, it opens our eyes to other people’s experiences, and it makes for a better
school culture and then community culture when we realize life’s not just about ourselves and that through service we can make those around us better.”
As a whole, GHS promotes many qualities, all of which are represented by our school motto: Ride for the Brand. This stands for respect, integrity, determination and excellence. When students use clubs as a way to spread kindness and resources, they are strengthening these standards by taking them beyond our school and sharing them with the world. These students, faculty, and clubs are im-
proving the culture and attitude of GHS in a way that helps the students, the school and Gunnison.
