Brandon Bizzell General Manager, The Faricy Boys Automotive
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and driver distraction continues to be a major factor in crashes that result in fatalities and serious injuries, especially in rural communities.
The National Distracted Driving Coalition estimates that from 25 to 30 percent of fatal crashes involve distracted driving.
Talking and texting on cell phones, while the most popular causes of driver distraction, are not the only thing that can distract a driver. Actions like tuning the radio, adjusting the GPS, eating or drinking can take a driver's eyes and mind off the road, with potentially deadly consequences.
Even talking to other passengers can be a dangerous distraction. It is important to become aware of what creates driver distraction and focus on keeping your hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and mind on the task of driving.
Rural communities far exceed urban areas for instances of distracted driving. In 2020, approximately eight percent of all deaths on roads were due to distracted driving. Of all the deaths involving distracted driving, 46 percent happened on rural roads.
The reason may be that road design adds to distraction in a way that city streets do not. In the city, many streets are short, there are numerous traffic controls like stop signs and red lights, ensur-
ing drivers are more engaged in the activity of driving the car.
Once you get outside of the city, you tend to have longer roads with extensive sections of unobstructed pavement. The speed limit increases and there is less traffic.
All of this means that drivers tend to relax and settle into what they consider “simple” driving that does not require as much awareness. As a result, drivers are more likely to check their phones, and that can lead to a serious accident.
Rural communities also must consider wildlife and weather, which can change in an instant in Colorado’s high country.
Passengers can play a significant role in reducing the number of distracted driving crashes by speaking up if they are in a vehicle being driven by someone who is distracted.
Be a back seat driver. It is important that passengers speak up and offer to make or take the
call or send a text message for the driver, if he or she feels it cannot wait.
The risk of distraction is especially high for teen drivers. It is important that parents talk with their teen drivers about safety. Many families sign, with their teens, a mutual pledge not to text or talk on the phone while driving.
Parents can also use technology to help problem solve, with apps that prevent calls while a car is in motion and others that enable parents to track and monitor speed.
Parents should also refrain from using their phones while driving, as well as obeying speed limits and traffic signals. Young people pattern their behavior on what they see their parents and other adults do, so it is up to us to set a good example. Make driving your number one priority when behind the wheel.
