<3 Alaska from the editor: Loyal readers! I’m happy to bring you the second METRO Virtual Fashion magazine. Thank you for appreciating our effort and being part of this special endeavor from Metro Models. Second Life is ever evolving and changing, and we hope to grow and learn with each edition. Changes are a bit of theme lately... I’ve revamped my avatar, and am about to embark on a facelift of the Metro agency, both its headquarters and its website! The ever-changing fashion scene in Second Life has seen a trend towards emulating high-fashion, clothing-as-art you’ll find on real catwalks in New York and Paris, and we’ve reflected that with some edgy fashion photography in this issue. But never fear, we’ve got a bit of something for everyone, even the most casual avatar. Enjoy, and stay fabulous!

Wahine o ke kai (Women of the Ocean) by Serenity Mercier

Wahine (pronounced Wa-‘hee-nay) is the Hawaiian word for woman. In surfer culture, it’s also a term of admiration for women who are good – and good-looking – surfers. I recently headed over to Ku’uipo Cove, private beach home of Christine Daffodil and her partner Craig Stallion, where I met with some of Second Life’s finest wahine surfers, including Christine herself, LeahJane Cazalet, Bailey Dazy, and Tibby Trenkins. Modelling Reaction surf and beach wear designed by Radical Twang, these girls showed me what it means to rip and shred the waves, doing some ripper moves that made my jaw drop. You don’t have to surf to look good in Reaction’s casual styles: these clothes are designed for action on the waves – and the beach. Just keep a wary eye out for the men in grey suits (large predatory fish known as “sharks” by non-surfers).

nce upon a time before the luxury of group notices, fashion blogs, magazines and even update groups; when the number of residents logged in at any given time was in the hundreds rather than the tens of thousands; when our main sources for new releases were limited to word-of-mouth and the New Products section of the SL Forums; there sat PixelDolls, shining brightly, on the mainland sim of Chartreuse. Well, some things never change. PixelDolls still has a home on Chartreuse, one that’s seen many reincarnations, but the overall ambience has remained a constant: charming, elegant, and a place that exudes a peaceful beauty. Like many, when I joined Second Life I was thrust into the booming club scene and even back then there was no shortage of mini-skirts and hoochie outfits. Everything has their time and place I guess, but I remember having somewhat of an epiphany when I was introduced to PixelDolls, and to this day, almost 4 years later, it still remains one of my very favorite stores on the grid. Throughout the years Neph has released many limited editions, some numbered as

low as only 10, some seasonal, some just retired after time. Not too long ago while perusing my inventory I rediscovered the magic of even my earliest PixelDolls collection. With this pictorial I wanted to pay tribute to the timeless and unique touch that Neph has consistently brought to SL fashion over the years. The earliest outfits I own date back to mid-2004 and trust me ladies, it was slimpickin’s back then. PixelDolls was not just another store; each trip for me was like visiting a whole separate grid; never just a shopping trip but an all-encompassing experience; a place to get away and rediscover the true beauty of creativity and the potential that SL creators could achieve. I can still vividly remember the first incarnation of PixelDolls that I had the privilege to see…it was several stories high and rather than vendors or walls full of items it had true boutique charm with items placed in a random yet orderly manner, lovely seats and chaise lounges to sit in and the most calming classical music to complete the ambience. Nephilaine Protagonist set a precedent, and even today amongst the swarms of shops PixelDolls continues to shine its own unique light.

Another Shop owner Eloh Eliot shocked the SL fashion world this winter by releasing her layered template files for her skins to the general public for download. While many used these templates as a base for highquality “free” skins (and not-so-free skins as well,) a group of content creators decided to use their Another Shop skin mods for a great cause. Another Fundraiser featured modified Another Shop skins for sale for L$50, with the proceeds going to UNICEF. On the following pages we’ve showcased just some of the variations that talented artists have made for Another Fundraiser. For the most part, these skins are no longer available in world, as the charity money has been collected.

From the vixens of the classic bump-and-grind houses via Vegas showgirls to modern rock chicks: burlesque is the new black. By Honey Bender

METRO Virtual Fashion vol 2 issue 1 | 73

METRO Virtual Fashion vol 2 issue 1 | 74

Call it a combination of extremes: noveau burlesque is, just like it was in the 20ties and 30ties – a gender bender kind of style that allows you play with both your feminine and masculine sides. I fell in love with the idea of the femme fatale as a young girl when i watched old Hollywood movies with my mother. I secretly craved to be in a chorus line, sporting half a tux, fishnets and a top hat while my friends all dressed in denim and T-shirts. I read up on the legends of burlesque: Gypsy Rose Lee, Lily St. Cyr, Josephine Baker and Tempest Storm. And of course the queen of sleazy innocence – Bettie Page. To mix their style with the flair of modern heroines like Madonna and Dita plus a dash of punk thrown became my obsession. With contemporary fashion it is easy to combine the best of yesterday with modern chic – it is a whole new take on glamour. Tightly laced corsets, tassle-adorend pasties, seamed nylons and heels are everywhere. (continued on page 78)

METRO Virtual Fashion vol 2 issue 1 | 77

Slim tailored men’s suits worn with basques cinched at the waist, feather boas and top hats is a potent combination. Old school tattoos and funky footwear add raunch to the elegance. Black opera gloves, porcelain pale skin, smokey eyes and dark plum lipstick completes the look. So the ultra feminine showgirl meets dark alley hustler – and you do not have to limit yourself to be the cabaret starlet. You can also be that dark, handsome stranger waiting by the stage exit with a huge bunch of roses. Or the vaudeville ringmaster himself if you desire. Punk goes cabaret! 

E X TR AORDINARY QUEENIE METRO Virtual Fashion vol 2 issue 1 | 80

We’re taking a break from showing the newer, upand-coming models and are featuring a couple of the virtual modelling worlds’ veterans, starting with the fabulous Queenie. I first met this lovely lady through Palomma Casanova’s DoveVogue modelling agency in 2005, and have worked with her ever since. I met up with her for a short shoot and a chance to ask some quick questions about her start in modelling… to which she gave highly detailed and excellent answers. You’ve been in Second Life for a long time. How did you originally get started in virtual modelling? Queenie: This question actually made me dig through my inventory! I applied to DoveVogue back in December of 2004 and I believe it may have been the only modeling agency in SL at that time. One of my best friends, Daphne Molinari, was pretty involved and I thought it sounded like so much fun, so with her encouragement I applied. What have been some of your modelling career highlights? Queenie: Surviving each show without having my blood pressure go through the roof? LOL. I take it seriously, preparing my poses and “look” for each outfit the moment I have the clothes in my inventory. But, that’s not what you asked. Highlights…Le’ Cadre Fashion Week in September of 2005…it literally was fashion “week” and we were doing 3 shows a day. I remember all the rehearsals, three different stages with three different walks and some being much more complicated than what most of us do nowadays. Preparation was grueling at times, but in the end we had a LOT of fun and pulled it off quite well. Another time that really sticks out for me is

the ONE fashion show I organized. It featured 5 designers I think (hey, you were one of them, Alaska!) and it was for Second Life’s Birthday in June of 2006. It was fabulous and I think Moo Money has a video of it floating around somewhere, but in order for me to try and pull something like that off again I would need to quit my RL job because I was up until 5AM for a week straight preparing. Finally, each agency I have been involved with over the years has been a highlight in itself; they were all good experiences as well as learning experiences, and I have met many wonderful people through all. Aside from modeling, what else are you involved with in Second Life? Queenie: Pretty much everything I do is at least some sort of off-shoot of modeling or fashion. Originally my main profession in SL was as a DJ and manager of a radio station which I stepped back from about a year ago after some major RL changes. I do miss it, but RL is different for me now and it’d be hard to step back into a committed schedule. I do enjoy blogging fashion, something I had started doing on my own sometime in 2006 and now do with The Rummage Box alongside some truly fantastic girls. I recently took on the role as a Marketing Representative for ASpiRE!’s New Designer Showcase…I have wanted to become more involved with one or more of the agencies I am with and the opportunity came up for this role which was small enough and manageable enough for me to juggle. I am also the one and only customer service gal for DE Designs; and I say it like that because some people like to “impersonate” staff of stores throughout SL…shame, shame! METRO Virtual Fashion vol 2 issue 1 | 81

I have also been involved in some machinima as far back as March of 2006 with Bedazzle (seemingly now defunct?) as well as more recently with Millions of Us. That’s always great fun too and something I’d like to do more. Do you have a favourite designer or a fashion icon that inspires you? Queenie: Every single designer or creator I have blogged has inspired me in some way. I wouldn’t have blogged them if they didn’t. I always cringe when questioned about favorite designers because inevitably I leave someone out that should have been a no-brainer. Anyone who knows the slightest thing about me however knows that DoC Eldritch of DE Designs is my number one and it has nothing to do with the fact that I model or work CS for him…modeling for him came after I was already a fan, and the CS role came much later, after a long and trusting relationship had been built. His classic designs are like wearable art, and his recent evolution into more everyday-wear has been very exciting! As for fashion icons? Well, some of my favorite bloggers to watch include Carissa Crimson and Milla Michinaga for their crisp, clear pictures and the fact that they can make a burlap sack look hot. Also my fellow Rummage Boxer, Kitty Lalonde, for being totally over the top (sometimes too much so!) with her humor and original photoshopping skills. There are plenty of others I admire greatly, but these few are my top picks. What advice would a model pro like yourself have for someone new to the world of SL modelling? Queenie: Oh lordy, where to start?

METRO Virtual Fashion vol 2 issue 1 | 82

1. Choose your poses wisely! I swear I am going to do a blog post on poses that need to be wiped completely from SL’s database. There are some wicked old ones out there that I still see used so often that are just horrid compared to the vast assortment of fantastic ones we have access to these days. Watch out for those “broken ankles”, tip-toes, unnatural positions, and poses that distort the outfit you are modeling. 2. When you receive your outfits for a show take the time to put together a look and poses that best complement the outfit. Some outfits or designers may call for a wilder hairstyle, but a general rule of thumb is to NOT wear hair or accessories (IF accessories are allowed) that overshadow the outfit. 3. Do NOT panic! We all lag, and we all make mistakes. In most cases the lag will break (if the sim doesn’t crash first lol) and as far as mistakes go most of the time the audience will not even notice unless you call attention to it. Take a deep breath and keep going. 4. Be up-to-date with a variety of hairstyles, well-made shoes and fresh skins. No, this is not cheap and not every modeling agency pays beyond getting to keep the clothes, but I see modeling in SL as a hobby, and many hobbies do cost some money to maintain. 5. Most importantly in my experience: BE RELIABLE. Just ONE no-show model can throw an entire fashion show into disarray and chaos. Yes, RL happens and most people are forgiving and understanding of that, but try to find a way to let someone know ASAP if you are having problems. Do you have a friend in RL who plays SL that can log-in and give a message? An email or IM of someone involved? When you sign on to model, even in a virtual world, it’s a commitment and people are counting on you. 

Sexy Moves by Anessa Stine with models: Payton Heron, Nemi McCoy, Anessa Stine, and Graciana McMillan There are as many ways to do sexy in Second Life as there are active users. But for those of us who stay closer to the mainstream definition of sexy, great lingerie and a hot bikini are a must have for every good girl on the grid – even if she has a naughty side. Just add the right hair and accessories and it isn’t difficult to see why it is impossible to have too many of these sexy looks in your wardrobe. I think the Gentlemen would agree.

This issue’s covergirl is another model veteran, Nemi McCoy. Like Queenie, Nemi and I have worked together for ages. Aside from being known for her exotic eyes and sexy fashion blogging, she’s well-known in our agency for her kindness and willingness to help newer models. How did you originally get started back in the day with Second Life modelling? I started modeling in second life because I was part of Players Magazine, via Marilyn Murphy. Then I met Brace Coral (BC Models), Palomma Casanova (Dove Vogue Models), Asri Falcone (Le Cadre Models) and began seriously modeling in second life in early 2005. Aside from modelling with Metro, what have you been up to lately in the virtual fashion world? I consult/announce shows for Mad Agency run by Kirk Claymore and Maddox DuPont, I live model for Indyra Seigo (Indyra Originals), and provide customer service for Nyte’N’Day (Nyte Caligari). I still actively model for Gypsy Wave Models, AlinaRae Inc, and announce for Calamity Haute Models. I contbute to sexysecond.com as a blogger which is also alot of fun :)

You’ve changed appearance and reinvented yourself over the years... what’s the evolution of Nemi been like? Actually the first major change for me was this past Christma . I got a newly redefined shape done by BabyHoney Bailey, and my first eyes as Alaska Metropolitan reminded me I was wearing system eyes. I am not sure I have reinvented myself, just consider it updating. Is there anyone in SL who has inspired or influenced you? (A designer, fashionista, personality?) I am not sure where I would start because there are so many wonderful people, who helped and inspire me and still do. I think my roots lay with Marilyn Murphy, Brace Coral, Palomma Casanova, Chip Midnight (because his was the first skin I ever bought,) models so many along the way who helped inspire me, and people I meet every day. My biggest

inspirations are Lucie Lomba and Tarl Nostram, who are both very special to me. Do you have any set plans for the future in SL? I really have no set plans, aside from continung to be in sl, and in fashion. I will celebrate 4 years of SL in May and still love it. Lastly, what advice do you have for newer models in SL? The best advice I can offer is to remember to have fun. It’s not about winning contests or being a “supermodel” as your 15 minutes of fame in second life may be short. Just learn to roll with the punches and do the best you can. Never give up and never let anyone take your dreams away. It’s not who you model for, it’s the joy and fun of modeling that counts.

on the blog:

a summary of the latest at http://metromodels.wordpress.com It’s been a busy time for us at Metro Models, and you can tell just by checking out the blog. First we had the hugely sucessful SHINE fundraiser for Medecins Sans Frontiers, and you can see photos from the fashion show and the silent auction results online. Alaska took a quick break to show some of the classic designs from Jonathan Hugo of *fuse, casual enough for a day of shopping but appropriate for the office as well. NEW SHOOTS II showcased two designers new to the scene: Aphrodite Outlander and Triangle Caudron. Aphrodite’s gorgeous sculpty shoes were an elegant match for the eccentric couture of Triangle at GHOST!. Skins are a personal choice, but most of us have and love a few from Tete A Pied (now rebranded “Fleur”). Ana and Moisie modelled six of their favourites for a beauty fashion shoot. Alaska’s written an informative guide to surviving fashion shows as an audience member (we mean the lag, of course). Turns out a lot of the lag at a big event in world

is caused client-side, meaning on your own computer. This blog post details the settings you should use in Second Life to minimize event lagging. Alienbear Gupte is one of Second Life’s premier jewellers, and customer service rep and supermodel Mui models some of the exquisite pieces from Alienbear’s collection. Though known for her tiaras and intricate diamond pieces, there’s something for everyone at Alienbear Designs. Lastly, we’ve covered some fun and festive lucky green looks for Saint Patrick’s Day, from the talented Nyla. House of Nyla’s got lots of costumes and couture in a variety of colours, but her Princess of Hearts in Lime stood out with its detailed parasol and poofed skirt.
