7 Tips for Summer Gardening Success

W

FAMILY FEATURES

hen temperatures peak and the summer sun shines for long hours throughout the day, it can put a burden on your garden and the plants growing in it. Some steps may be easier to take than others, but there are ways to keep your greenery thriving even in relentlessly scorching heat. Of course, having the right tools and a personal commitment to JDUGHQLQJ DUH D FRXSOH RI WKH ÂżUVW DQG PRVW LPSRUWDQW UXOHV EXW WKHVH WLSV can serve as simple, helpful ways to keep your garden growing strong.

Check equipment. Before getting carried away with digging, tilling or watering, be sure that all of the tools for these jobs and others are ready for use. Inspect hoses and spigots for leaks and holes, ensure that hand tools are sturdy and monitor your inventory of important items like soil to make sure you have enough for the tasks ahead.

Know what to grow. Instead of gardening on a hunch and wasting water or other precious resources on plants that simply don’t grow well or bloom in the sumPHU UHVHDUFK ZKLFK ÀRZHUV SODQWV DQG EXVKHV ZLOO VXFFHHG /RFDO experts who sell seeds and bulbs can likely help guide you while you shop for your next plant.

Water early. By watering in the morning, you can achieve multiple objectives. First, you won’t be stuck sweating it out when the sun is directly overhead during the day while trying to hydrate your plants. Second, soaking the soil early can help plants stay hydrated throughout the hottest parts of the day, rather than allowing them to dry out in the heat and attempting to rehydrate them later.

Mix nutrients with water. $GGLQJ IHUWLOL]HU WR ZDWHU FDQ KHOS EDODQFH RXW GH¿FLHQFLHV LQ FHUWDLQ minerals, depending on the quality of your soil, especially if you aren’t able to water frequently.

Keep potted plants cool. When sitting in the sun, certain types of pots may absorb heat, sometimes causing the plants within to dry out and become overheated. Lightly mulching the pots can help, as can placing the pot in a saucer full of moist sand.

Add shade. Another way to keep potted plants, and all other plants for that matter, cool is to set up a canopy or shade cloth. Especially if your garden is subject to nearly all-day sunlight, it’s helpful to give it some shade at the hottest parts of the day with a canopy directly above.

Protect against pests. :KLOH LW FDQ EH GLI¿FXOW NHHSLQJ SHVWV DQG LQVHFWV RXW RI \RXU garden can help keep both you and your plants healthy. Repellants are an obvious option, but some may negatively affect the growth of plants. Instead, practice habits like maintaining healthy soil and getting rid of standing water (which can attract mosquitoes) to actively deter insects. By staying committed and following these tips among others, you can keep your garden lush and growing even during the summer’s hottest days. Ease Up on Energy Consumption

Home upgrades that reduce energy reliance

E

FAMILY FEATURES

nhancing your home’s energy-efficient features is a savvy way to make the space more livable while also making a smaller impact on the environment and your bank account. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the average American homeowner spends about $2,000 a year on energy for heating, cooling and other power needs throughout the house. However, inefficiencies caused by poorly operating systems, drafts and other energy drains may account for as much as 10-20 percent of wasted money each year. Whether your motivation is reducing home energy expenses, creating a more earth-conscious lifestyle or both, there are numerous ways you can make a significant impact on your home’s energy efficiency.

Windows Faulty seals and cracks are responsible for as much as 20 percent of air infiltration into or out of the home, according to U.S. Department of Energy data. Windows are a major culprit for these types of leaks. If a complete window replacement is out of your budget, there are still numerous ways you can improve the energy efficiency of existing windows. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that adding storm windows can reduce the amount of heat lost through windows by as much as 25-50 percent. Caulking and adding weather stripping around windows can also make a noticeable difference, as can window coverings such as blinds or drapes that minimize the transfer of heat and cold through window panes.

If you add new windows, there are several variables to consider. Generally, the goal is to optimize heat gain during colder months and reduce heat gain in the summer. Energy performance ratings can help you understand how particular windows transfer heat and light so you can make the best choices for your home’s location, including the climate and orientation to the sun.

Doors Like windows, doors, and especially their perimeters, are a common source of lost energy. Poor insulation due to faulty installation or simply wear over time can contribute to energy loss.

FAMILY FEATURES

ntertaining is one thing, but dazzling your guests with an outdoor party sensation is another. Summer can be the best time of year for outdoor parties. From twinkling lights to patterned tablecloths, every detail counts when it comes to impressing family and friends. It may feel like a lot of pressure to live up to expectations, but your party can be both simple and elegant with a few easy tips.

Start early

Early is never early enough when it comes to planning a rock-star summer gathering. Check to see if you have enough utensils, make sure everything is in place and that there is enough food for your guests. Prepare weeks in advance, if possible, to make sure you have all the materials necessary to throw your dream outdoor party.

Spice up the invitations

The perfect invitations can do three things. First is tell the basics: what, when and where. They can also tell guests what to bring along with them. Of course, invitations should also be appealing to the eye. This is your time to get a little creative and catch guests’ attention before the big event.

Show your style

You want your guests to be as comfortable as possible. Make sure to dress tables and chairs with cushions and tablecloths. Mix it up and show off some of your SHUVRQDO ÀDLU ZLWK EULJKW FRORUV RU IDQF\ SDWWHUQV ,W¶V HDV\ WR FHOHEUDWH VXPPHU with styles that bring summer vibes to life.

Less mess meals

No one likes messy meals, especially at a summer party. Put together a menu that isn’t stressful on the cook or stressful on your guests to eat. Dropping sauce on a white summer top is a party no-no.

Rain, rain, go away

Always prepare for the worst. If clouds roll in on party day, make sure you’re ready. You can simply move the party indoors at the drop of a hat. Tents can also help keep the party going outdoors in case of precipitation.

Make your own games

Give the kids something to do and make it fun. While the adults visit, the little ones need something to keep themselves busy. Whether it’s bubbles or water play in the heat, something to mix it up can help keep them occupied.

Jam it out

Keep the music low and cool. There is no need to blast your speakers across the entire yard. Play your favorite jams, but nothing too crazy. The music can really set the mood of the entire party and make or break the atmosphere.

Cool it down

The summer heat is blazing and sometimes being outside can be miserable. Make sure your guests stay comfortable, even in the heat. Lay out handheld fans, lots of water and even some towels. Your guests will want to stay hydrated so they can party on.
