Lead with style: How to create clean, crisp curb appeal for your home's entry
(BPT) - Whether you are building a new home, or want to refresh your existing home, choosing a contemporary style creates high-class curb appeal. But, what goes into contemporary home styling? Among the various
ways architects and interior designers describe “contemporary,” two words come up again and again: “simple” and “sophisticated.” For example, interior decorator Coral Nafie describes it as, “fundamentally, simplicity, subtle sophistication,
texture and clean lines help to define contemporary style decorating. Interiors showcase space rather than things. By focusing on color, space, and shape, contemporary interiors are sleek and fresh.” “Less is more: smooth

profiles instead of ornamentation,” adds decorator Lisa Frederick. As seen from the outside, the National Association of Realtors notes contemporary homes feature these design elements: * Irregular, asymmetrical façade * Strong, geometric shapes * Distinctive roofline sometimes flat, other times gabled - usually with a wide eave overhang * Natural, often local, building materials Your home might be a crisp marvel of modern architecture, a midcentury rambler or some other style. In any case, a simple way to create
contemporary curb appeal is with a sophisticated front entry, starting at the door. “Traditional front doors, as in Colonial homes, had a lot of decorative features,” says Brad Loveless, marketing and product development manager for Simpson Door Company. “Picture molding, raised panels, dentil shelves and elaborate knobs, knockers and hinges. Today, many homeowners, particularly those on the upper end, look for entry doors that are much more clean and crisp. Contemporary door styles have straight lines, flat panels and simple geometric shapes like squares, diamonds and rectangles.” In keeping with the contemporary theme of using natural materials, wood and glass are popular in entry doors. You can select from dozens of readily available wood species and some manufacturers will make a door out of any species you choose. Glass options range from simple, clear glass, to textures that balance light and privacy. With the thousands of permutations and combinations available in
contemporary door designs, it can be difficult knowing where to start. Easy-to-use online tools provide a way to quickly compare options and to personalize your door to your unique tastes. For example, Simpson’s website features “DOORmagination” tools that include a “Test Drive Your Door” tool that lets you upload a photo of your home and see how various doors will look on it. Such tools provide a fast way to compare dozens of options. Other design tools include a wood species selector allowing you to see doors in more than 20 wood types, and a “Glass Taste Test” to see how much privacy different glass textures provide. To complete the look of your contemporary door, it is important to consider hardware. On today’s front doors, the hardware is usually understated – simple handle and locksets in satin metal finishes are popular – no lion’s head door knockers. Your local door dealer or hardware store can show you dozens of options. As a final inspiration, remember that simple does not need to mean boring or cold. As Lisa Frederick sums up contemporary styling, “While it doesn’t have the overt warmth of older design styles, it won’t cast a chill either.” Architect John Hill’s take is, “contemporary architecture is of its time, therefore innovative and forward-looking.”

Put the pro in home improvement with the right painting tools
(BPT) - When planning to paint a room, most people spend countless hours selecting a color. Once that decision is made, they spend far less time selecting paint brushes and rollers. Many DIYers don’t consider that choosing the right applicators is just as important as selecting the right paint color. Here are a few tips to help you identify the right tools for the job and make your next painting project your best yet. Rule No. 1 - you get what you pay for
When selecting paint brushes and roller covers, don’t skimp on quality. A better-made brush is less likely to leave bristles and brush marks on your walls, ensuring you achieve a smoother, more professional-looking finish. A well-made brush may also cost a few dollars more, but can last over hundreds of painting jobs if taken care of correctly. Along the same lines, a cheap roller cover will leave lint on your walls embedded in the
wet paint. If you leave the lint and let the paint set, you’ll definitely notice when the walls of your newly painted room look a bit fuzzy. You’ll save yourself hours of time and lots of frustration by selecting highergrade applicators, such as Marathon roller covers from Purdy. Marathon leaves significantly less lint and is quite durable. One roller cover will last for your whole job and is great for painting larger rooms like a basement or garage. Break out the brushes Brushes are available in various sizes and for a variety of paints and stains. The most common size for home painting projects is a 2 1/2-inch brush. If you are working on painting smaller details, like baseboards, look at using a smaller size. Next, consider the bristles. Stiffer, synthetic bristles work best with latexbased coatings, while softer, natural bristles are best for stains or oil-based products. There are also two styles of
bristles – angled and flat. If working where the wall meets the ceiling, painting into corners or close to the trim, choose an angled brush. A flat brush is made to paint larger, level areas such as walls and doors.
Rollout the rollers In addition to investing in a good brush, you'll also need a quality roller cover for walls and other large areas. See Paint, page 8

Paint
When selecting a roller cover, pay special attention to nap, fabric type and size. Continued from page 6 The thickness of the fabric – the nap – varies for each project type. The more texture you desire on the surface you are painting, the higher the nap should be. A 1/2-inch nap height is most common for use in the majority of homes, with nylon and polyester fabrics being the best for covering drywall. For an ultra-smooth finish, often desired in kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms, choose a 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch nap in a woven or microfiber fabric. In addition to fabric and nap options, covers are also available in a variety of sizes: 9-inch width covers work well for full room projects and mini-rollers are great for painting small areas. Finally, roller covers may have different core sizes, so keep that in mind when purchasing roller frames. If you still have questions about what’s the best applicator for your painting project, applicator manufacturers often have tool selectors available. Check out the Purdy tool selector at www.purdy.com.
Spring home decorating tips from the ground up Open the windows and get to work with fun spring decorating ideas blanketing an otherwise dull field with color and pizazz. Draw from this to create scenic floors that breathe new life into your home. An inexpensive way to add drama and texture to any room is by laying decorative area rugs and runners in bare, forgotten parts of the house. Whether you have wood floors or carpet, this is an easy way to make any room pop. Floral prints or bright, bold patterns are great ways to accentuate a space. For an earthier, toned-down appeal, opt for natural fabrics like jute or hemp. Take it a step further and paint wood stair risers with inspirational words, fun patterns or solid colors.
Other tools for your toolbox It’s a good idea to have the following on hand before you crack open that first can of paint: spackle and a scraper for filling in nail holes and uneven areas; quality painter’s tape; stir sticks; a roller tray and liner; drop cloths for protecting your flooring, carpet and furniture - canvas works better than plastic; and a screwdriver, which can be used for removing paint can lids, outlet covers and switch plates. To make sure your painting project goes as planned, be sure to take a little time selecting the best paint brushes and roller covers for the job. This will save you time and money in the long run. Start with the right tools and you'll be painting like a pro in no time.

Cook up some space in the kitchen: Simple solutions to add storage and style to your home
(BPT) - The kitchen - it’s the central hub of the home where we do homework, pay bills, charge electronics, surf the Web and cook up a meal or two. We spend hours in this core of the house, so it’s not surprising that a recent survey from the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence (RICKI) found that four out of five homeowners want to change something about their kitchen. Whether the change you’re seeking is a complete overhaul or a simple update, the following tips and projects can help turn your kitchen from cluttered and chaotic to clean and organized. Conquer counters and cabinets
While you may not be able to add square footage to your kitchen, there are many ways to conquer clutter and make the room feel larger. Start by clearing off the countertops and placing small appliances or unnecessary items in cupboards or closets. Next, focus on the sink area. Add some fashion and function with a new single-handle pulldown or pullout faucet; and swap the dingy bottle of soap with a permanent soap dispenser. Many soap dispensers, like the new premium line from Moen, are available in several designs – modern, transitional and
traditional – to coordinate with your new faucet. Are you tired of the kitchen dish towels lying on the sink or countertop – or worse yet, the floor? Towel bars, towel rings and hooks are an ideal solution to provide a permanent and convenient home for this kitchen necessity. Other accessories, such as robe hooks, can also be used to hang potholders. Whether mounting on the side of an upper cabinet, the end of the island or other work areas, Moen offers a variety of accessories, such as the Boardwalk and Banbury collections, that perfectly match Moen kitchen faucets. And, don’t stop there. Create continuity throughout your updated space with new knobs and drawer pulls that complement your faucets and fixtures. Whether you prefer modern or something more traditional, there are many options available to extend your sense of design down to the details. “Homeowners are demanding more from their kitchens than ever before,” says Mike Maynard, product manager, Moen Accessories. “We know that it’s much more than a spot to cook and clean the dishes. That’s why Moen keeps consumers’ needs top-of-mind by offering thoughtfully designed products to fit the ever-changing demands of this vital room.” Creative carts and savvy stools Another option to make your kitchen feel more spacious is to invest in a rolling cabinet or cart. It can be used for storage (for example, hiding those small appliances) or serve as a kitchen island that, when not in use, can be stored in the pantry or closet. Hosting a family get-together or party? Use the rolling cart as your bar when entertaining guests. Already have a
kitchen island? To help save even more floor space, install swivel stools without backs. They are a great solution, as they can be neatly tucked away after a meal or when homework is done. Drawer storage
on your island or countertops, create a central command kitchen station complete with stylish baskets to hide clutter and built-in book shelves or mail slots to ensure everything has a proper place. If you have enough space, add a desk to offer a devoted area for paper storage – as well as a work center to pay bills or do school work. With a few simple projects, you can cook up some space in your kitchen and achieve maximum organization and style. For more information on Moen accessories or products, visit www.moen.com or call 800-BUY-MOEN (800-289-6636).
We often have good intentions when organizing our kitchen drawers, but let’s face it – they’re usually a mess! According to houzz.com, many homeowners are taking a new approach to kitchen drawer storage and solving space dilemmas by installing customized sliding drawers. One example is an under-sink sliding drawer which pulls out to provide easy access to cleaning supplies that often get lost behind the pipes. Continued from page 8 Another popular addition is a builtin utensil drawer. Mail, iPads and keys ... oh my! Beyond the pots and pans, the kitchen becomes a dumping ground for everyday items. Instead of From overhead lighting that keeps things having all of your paperwork collect sunny and cheery to ceiling fans that help disperse gentle breezes throughout your home, these small details add subtle comfort to any space. Replace dusty lampshades with over-sized drum lights or industrial cage lights. Ceiling fan blades can be enhanced with floral stencils or a new stain. You can also paint the ceiling to draw the eyes up even more. Don’t feel obligated to stick to white though. Add a burst of color to the ceiling for a quick way to add visual intrigue and height to the space. This spring, why not reflect nature’s beauty inside your home? Recreate the magic of the season with a few of these easy home decorating tips. When rainy days and afternoon showers have you heading inside, you’ll be glad you did.

Perk up your home with pattern (BPT) - Give your home an energy shot this spring with bright colors and bold patterns. “Patterns are hot, hot, hot,” says Cathie Pliess, program coordinator of design for The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and a certified interior designer. “Look for oversized patterns in bold colors on a white background.” Spring design is trending to naturals – florals, ethnic patterns, textures. “We are all so tied to the digital world that we crave spaces reminding us of the organic physical world,” says Juli Sproules, an interior designer and faculty member at The Art Institute of Washington, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta. Here are some tips on this year’s spring trends and how to use them to update your home easily and without spending a fortune.
Big florals This year, florals are big and bright – think tropical blooms, not delicate wildflowers. Go to your local botanical garden, or visit a florist for inspiration. “Floral patterns can bring color and life into a room,” says Sproules. Ethnic pizzazz Patterns are also becoming more inspired by global design. “This includes motifs with influences from African, Mexican and Islamic design stylized patterns, often in oversized translation,” Pliess notes. Mix, not match Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and textures. “Patterns used in a See Pattern, page 12

Go green with eco-friendly outdoor living spaces Pattern
(BPT) - Warmer weather means days spent in the backyard with barbecues, pool parties and neighborhood gatherings. This year, create a more satisfying and sustainable outdoor living space that you’ll feel extra good about by going “green.” With some expert advice, it’s easier than you think. Here are four easy tips from the experts at Trex to help homeowners transform the backyard into an eco-friendly escape. Reduce, reuse, recycle Gone are the days when it was difficult to find eco-friendly products constructed with sustainable manufacturing processes. Today, it’s easy being green, especially when it comes to outdoor living. Among the “greenest” products available for the home is composite decking. Case in point, in the past nine years, Trex – the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking – has salvaged more than 2.9 billion pounds of plastic and wood scrap, keeping these materials from landfills and transforming them into beautiful, high-performance and sustainable outdoor living products made of more than 95 percent recycled materials. Minimize maintenance Maintaining a wood deck can be a chore with all that scrubbing, bleaching and staining – not to mention the work and harsh chemicals required to repair or replace weathered, splintered or deteriorated boards. Woodalternative decking and railing is low maintenance and designed to
Sparkle it up Bring in this season’s metallics trend with warm bronzy colors. “You can mix metallics now too – perhaps a soft rubbed bronze with highly polished silver or nickel,” says Sproules. Blue is the hue The cool calmness of blue makes it the hot color for spring. From navy to turquoise, set off blue with natural brights – unexpected colors inspired by nature, like the rich purple of a cut gemstone, the orange-red of tropical fruit or watermelon pink. withstand wear and tear from weather, outdoor furniture and foot traffic. High-performance composite decking offers superior durability and long-lasting good looks. Its exclusive composite formula brings together the best qualities of wood and plastic to create a superior alternative to wood, resulting in decks that require only a periodic cleaning with soap and water to stay looking and performing “like new” for years without sanding, staining or painting. “High-performance composite decking allows homeowners to create the dream outdoor living space they’ve always wanted while being mindful of the environment,” says Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex. “We are extremely proud to offer a product that is as easy on the earth as it is to maintain.” Illuminate efficiency Deck and landscape lighting are ideal for adding ambiance and safety to any outdoor space. For maximum energy efficiency, forego conventional lighting systems that use incandescent bulbs – which
waste energy by producing heat as well as light – for more energyefficient LED fixtures. For instance, fixtures featuring Cree LED components use 70 percent less energy than traditional incandescent lighting and deliver up to 40,000 hours of light, so homeowners can enjoy their outdoor spaces long after the sun goes down. Finish with eco-friendly furnishings Refresh your deck with sustainable and stylish all-weather outdoor furniture. Look for pieces made from durable composites or recycled steels. These materials are weather-resistant, ultradurable and long-lasting. Composite furniture also is extremely eco-friendly made primarily from recycled polyethylene sourced from discarded plastics such as milk jugs. Like composite decking, composite furniture doesn’t require painting, staining or waterproofing to keep it looking like new for years to come. For more information on the latest in “green” outdoor living products, visit www.trex.com.
Trend easy To bring together disparate elements and create a holistic, curated space, select a pattern that picks up elements of colors, textures, and shapes already in the room. Then use it in easy, inexpensive accents like these: * Use a dramatically patterned wall covering on one wall with the other walls painted in one color pulled from the wall covering. * Add pillows in a variety of patterns and textures that complement and contrast. * Add drapery panels in an exciting floral or ethnic print. “Solid walls with wildly patterned draperies make a bold statement,” says Pliess. * Paint a large canvas from an art supply store in a vibrant blue or purple or use tape to block out a pattern and paint in several colors. Alternatively, cover the canvas in a wildly patterned fabric. * Display a small group of whatever you collect – teacups, books, brass or carved wood pieces, vases, pottery, photos, even gloves or shoes. If you don’t have a collection, start one by visiting flea markets or tag sales. “Pick three or five items and arrange on a shelf, on top of a nightstand or console table, in an unused fireplace, or in the middle of the coffee table,” recommends Sproules. * Bring in a subtle metallic element by covering the inside of a dark lampshade with glitter or metallic spray paint. Or both – spray paint first, then add glitter.
