How to trick the eyes with the magic of home improvement (BPT) - From disappearing acts to mind games and sensory illusions, the art of magic is all about making your audience believe what they are seeing, taking a seemingly impossible task and making it possible. This timeless art can inspire you to perform some magic of your own using simple home improvement tips to fool the eyes and transform small, drab spaces into ones that will surely astound and amaze. Seeing is believing Paint color is an easy and inexpensive way to create an optical illusion. When used properly, certain paint colors can actually make a room look larger. Take white, for instance. Using very light colors or whites, like Ultra White from Dutch Boy, can help reflect natural or artificial light, making the walls seem to disappear and creating a space that looks bigger. Picking the perfect neutral can give the illusion that your walls are receding. This subtle DIY secret keeps eyes

focused on the colors and patterns of the furnishings and accessories in the room, rather than on the size of the room itself. Embracing your dark side Most people believe dark colors shouldn’t or can’t be used in small spaces, but that’s not the case. If you use the color on everything - the moldings, cabinets and walls - the unified, seamless look makes the room appear larger. Paint the room with a dark color, like Dutch Boy’s Mosaic Tiles or Chanson Bleu in a semi-gloss finish, and light will bounce off the shiny surface, creating the appearance of a brighter, larger room. Conversely, if you have a room that is overwhelmingly large, the opposite principals can be applied to make it look smaller. Use dark colors, but this time in a flat finish, to minimize the appearance of the room. An alternative way to trick the eye with paint - and add a level of

sophistication and luxury to your home - is by using a faux finishing technique, replicating the appearance of materials such as brushed suede, granite or old world plaster. A disappearing act Another way to keep costs and clutter down is by making trim and other decor items vanish. Instead of over-furnishing, accessorize with multi-purpose pieces like a decorative storage chest that can double as a coffee table or a set of nesting tables that can be easily stored when not in use. Place large furniture against the walls to open up the space. Paint pieces like armoires and shelving units the same color as the walls and hang matching draperies to help them blend. The room instantly feels larger. Opt for furniture with open arms and exposed legs to keep your eyes flowing through the room. Introduce glass or

glass alternative tables, which are almost invisible. Mirrors are also a great, inexpensive way to open up a space, giving the illusion of depth. But don’t overdo it with accessories - keep it simple and clean. With just a little bit of practice and a few home improvement tricks up your sleeve, you too can be an interior illusionist. Your friends and family will be left wondering how you did it.

Smart, stylish solutions keep your entire home cool - without disrupting home decor

(BPT) - Don’t sweat it if your home doesn’t have central air-conditioning. Whether you live in an older house that can’t accommodate ductwork, or you don’t want to sacrifice your interior aesthetics with an unattractive air conditioning unit, you can still keep your home feeling – and looking – cool this summer with advanced air conditioning technology. Homeowners without central AC often choose to cool their home with airconditioners that are clunky, inefficient and downright ugly. Fortunately, you can find higher quality, more attractive ways to cool your home. “Homeowners today are seeking products that are not only high performing, but also visually appealing and fit in to the personality of their home,” says Patrick O’Toole, editorial director and publisher of Professional Remodeler magazine. “Installing an attractive air conditioner instead of an outdated unit is a simple change homeowners can make to keep themselves cool during the summer.”

There are a number of ideal alternatives to traditional HVAC systems that can be a perfect addition to your home this summer season. Below are some tips to keep your home cool all summer long: * Duct-free systems have traditionally cooled just one room of the house, and most models aren’t made with your home’s aesthetics in mind. For example, the unique, multi-zone LG Art Cool Gallery, which has both an indoor and outdoor component, resolves both concerns by allowing users to customize the unit with their own artwork, while also heating and cooling up to four separate areas in the home. The indoor unit hangs on the wall like a picture, and homeowners can insert their own artwork or photography into a frame that conceals the front of the unit, so they don’t have to stare at the bland, protruding box on the wall. This energyefficient system is ENERGY STAR certified and is exceptionally easy to use with a remote control and auto operation modes.

* Ceiling fans not only help cool a room on their own, but also are a great way to supplement the effectiveness of an existing AC unit by creating further air flow. While older versions are often cumbersome and unattractive, it’s now easy to find fans that are both effective, and can function as a beautiful addition to your decor. * Blocking the hot sunrays from shining through your window with blinds or shades is a great way to maintain coolness. Room-darkening blinds, curtains or shades can deliver stylish looks and still shield rooms from the sun during the hottest parts of the day. Also, updating drapery with seasonal, lightcolored fabrics throughout the house can help reflect heat better than dark ones, which tend to absorb light and heat. * Adjusting the pilot light on your gas stove and water heater can be a costeffective solution, as they often produce excess heat that raises the indoor temperature. If you have a gas fireplace, turn off the pilot light during summer to lower temperatures and

contribute to a reduction in your gas bill, which results in energy savings throughout the season. * Incandescent light bulbs turn the majority of the energy they consume into heat. Consider replacing traditional incandescent bulbs with cooler alternatives like CFLs or LEDs. These bulbs consume far less electricity, which could lower your utility bills, and turn most of that energy into light, rather than heat. * For a longer-term solution that is also environmentally friendly, plant shade trees around your house, such as Maple, Oak and Elm. They’ll help protect your home from the sun, create an aesthetically appealing landscape and contribute fresh oxygen to your outdoor environment. From reducing the amount of sunlight that warms your house to installing the latest in duct-free AC units, simple tips like these can help you and your family stay cool this summer and save on your energy bills.

Top 5 trendy bathroom upgrades that don't cost a bundle

(BPT) - No one ever said “trendy” translates to “cheap.” Yet when it comes to on-trend, luxury upgrades, you don’t have to spend like a diva to make your bathroom look and function like a designer’s dream. From skylights to shower seats, some of the hottest bathroom trends of 2014 are surprisingly affordable to accomplish. Home website Houzz polled users and asked what bathroom upgrades they most desired. Many of the answers were both luxurious and affordable (like skylights and double-flush toilets). Others were downright easy, such as towel warmers and foot rests in the shower. Here are five hot bathroom improvement trends and some ideas for incorporating them into your home: 1. Skylights

Many Houzz respondents said they would like a skylight in their bathroom. They’re definitely on to something. In rooms where privacy is a concern, skylights can provide both natural light and ventilation without exposing your

personal business to the neighbors. They’re both beautiful – endowing bathrooms with a major “wow” factor – and practical; Energy Star-qualified noleak, solar-powered fresh-air skylights from Velux America can help trim electricity costs by providing natural light and passively venting moist, warm air from the room. Install solar-powered skylights and blinds, and the cost of the products, as well as the installation, can qualify for a 30 percent federal tax credit. And for 10 weeks during the summer there’s also a $200 cash rebate from Velux on solar skylights. You can create a big impact for a small price with a makeover that only takes a couple of days. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more and to locate the closest certified installer. 2. Lighted vanity mirror In keeping with the lighting theme, 41 percent said they would like a lighted vanity mirror. Home improvement stores, design studios and online retailers carry a wide variety of options in shapes, sizes, styles and light sources (LED, CFL or incandescent) to suit virtually every taste. Because installing a lighted vanity mirror is a simple doit-yourself job, it’s also a very low-cost improvement that has a big impact on a bathroom’s appearance and usability. With such a huge variety, it’s possible to find a mirror that will fit your budget, whether it’s less than $100 or more than $1,000. 3. Double-flush toilet The ongoing trend of making homes greener may have helped inspire the 23 percent of Houzz fans who said they want a doubleflush toilet. Dual-flush toilets allow you to use only the water you need to get the job done – less for liquid

waste, more for solids – so they contribute to a home’s overall footprint and can help trim water bills. It’s possible to find dual-flush options for less than $250, so they’re a lower-cost upgrade to begin with. They’re even more cost-effective when installed by a savvy DIYer. 4. Towel warmers Who doesn’t love the comforting warmth of a towel fresh out of the dryer? Towel warmers deliver that effect without the hassle and expense of running the dryer. Wall-mounted or freestanding, plug-in or hard-wired, all towel warmers work the same way; heated bars warm towels hung on the rack, providing a cozy, warm towel every time you bathe. Plug-in versions install easily, while hard-wired ones may

require professional installation. Prices can range from less than $100 to more than $600, depending on the style and features you choose. 5. Shower foot rest Clearly, this is one improvement that most benefits the women in a home, but 10 percent of those polled by Houzz said they wanted a foot rest in the shower. This one is such an economical improvement, you may wonder why anyone wouldn’t do it. Some suctioncup styles cost under $20. For a more refined look or enhanced sturdiness, it’s possible to find one that anchors into the wall through screws, or a style built into shower surrounds. If you’re redoing your shower stall, it’s the perfect time to add a stylish, sturdy foot rest.

Opening the door to space and privacy is easy

(BPT) - Homeowners, builders and remodelers are always looking for innovative and new ways to enhance existing spaces during home makeovers and room renovations. To meet that demand, Johnson Hardware recently introduced the Series 200WM wall mount door hardware, an exclusively designed system for mounting sliding doors to interior walls. Not to be confused with pocket doors, which slide into a wall, the Series 200WM has a track-and-roller system that attaches directly to the wall, resulting in quick installation and easy operation. This is an ideal solution for walls constructed of brick or concrete block, or for wood-framed walls that contain pipes or wiring that would make it difficult and costly to install traditional pocket doors.

Unlike a standard hinged door that requires up to 14 square feet of floor space to swing open, a door mounted with the Series 200WM hardware takes up little more space than the thickness of the door. And because the door slides open, a table, chair, desk or other furniture piece can be placed beside the doorway without interfering with the door’s operation. The heavy-duty Series 200WM wall mount hardware system is rated for commercial and residential use, and can support doors weighing up to 400 pounds. It can be used with doors of any height and virtually any thickness of 1 1/8 inch or greater. The Series 200WM will accommodate single door openings to 96 inches wide and converging door openings to 192 inches wide. See Door, page 11

Plenty of windows grace the walls of the master bedroom and allow sunlight to flow freely. A tray ceiling overhead adds a touch of drama to the room. The attached master bath features a granite double vanity, a jetted tub, and an oversized tiled shower stall. There is a water closet for privacy and a large walk-in closet for clothing storage. Spray paint tips to flawlessly update your home's furniture Update your home's furniture flawlessly with these tips (BPT) - With the warmer weather, now is the ideal time to bring new life to home decor. Whether your outdoor items are looking worn and weathered or your indoor spaces need a pop of color - spray paint is the perfect solution. To ensure your furniture update goes flawlessly, follow these few tips from the experts at Krylon, the nation’s leader in spray paint. Prep properly

Surface preparation is extremely important and the best predictor of how long your finish will last. The goal is to make your surface as smooth as possible to ensure the new paint adheres well. Remove any loose rust or paint by lightly sanding. Next, clean surfaces with soap and water or degreaser, if necessary. Rinse and let your surface dry completely. Your surface should now be clean, dull and dry. To prime or not to prime

Primer prepares bare metal, wood, canvas or other materials to create a smooth surface for paint. It also seals the surface to help smoothen out blemishes, increase spray paint adhesion and improve corrosion resistance. While priming is a critical step, research shows that consumers only use a primer 50 percent of the time. For the same results with fewer steps, try a combination spray paint with primer. Choosing the right product

It is important to choose the product that meets the needs for your substrate – as well as your style. Plastic/laminates

With the popularity of ready-toassemble furniture made of laminates and storage items made of plastic, these surfaces are prime targets for painting. However, without the right

product, your project could turn out less than desirable. “Most consumers don’t realize that not all plastics are the same,” says Denise Patterson, Krylon product manager. “In fact, most spray paints on the market will not adhere to the most popular plastics found in furniture, toys and storage. Krylon’s new Dual Superbond spray paint offers a unique formulation that promises quality adhesion to 85 percent of plastics, as well as hard-to-adhere surfaces, such as melamine and laminates.” Metal For metal surfaces – especially those that are exposed to outdoor elements – it is important to choose a product that provides rust protection. “Many products that claim rust protection only work when used with an additional primer,” says Patterson. “Using a combination product, such as Dual Superbond Paint + Primer ensures that all surfaces will achieve superior rust protection without a multi-step process.” Wood Choosing the best spray paint for wood is dependent on the finish, use and location of your surface. Exterior projects should always be primed for the greatest durability. A general purpose spray paint, such as Krylon ColorMaster, is an ideal choice for wood. This new product offers the widest color selection with nearly 100 colors and finishes, as well as offering a combination paint and primer for a one-step application.

Spraying specifics Before you spray, shake your can for about two minutes. Next, hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the surface and use several thin coats of spray paint instead of one thick coat. Begin and finish your spray pattern off the object using an even side-to-side motion,

releasing the tip at the end of each pass. Try to overlap your spray pattern by about one-third with each pass. As you prepare to paint new life into your home decor, these few tips and tricks will ensure your project is painless and pretty for years to come. For more painting tips or information on Krylon products, visit www.krylon.com.

Simple design tips for bringing outdoor freshness into indoor spaces your space By placing fresh cut flowers in your favorite vase on your desk or indoor tables, you can enjoy the scent and beauty of the outdoors while indoors. And don’t stress, the flowers don’t need to coordinate with the color of your sofa or office furniture. 4. Mix patterns and layer materials Don’t be afraid to be playful with your fabrics - as adding in floral-inspired patterns and colors along with a mix of materials, from wood to metal or stone, will help you evoke the feeling of being outside while lounging and even working indoors. Remember to wash linens and other washable fabrics with Bounce Bursts for a boost of outdoor freshness. (BPT) - Between time spent commuting, working in the office and conquering an endless list of to-dos at home, a full day can go by without much, if any, time spent outdoors. In fact, Americans spend 90 percent or more of their time indoors according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Although it’s not always possible to increase the amount of time spent outside, it is possible to transform your interior environments allowing you to experience outdoor freshness even if you’re inside. Celebrity interior designer Thom Filicia knows the benefits of the outdoors and the importance of bringing it inside. Through his designs,

he often finds ways to transform indoor spaces with touches of outdoor freshness, to create an inviting environment that stimulates all the senses. To achieve this, he offers five simple tips. 1. Embrace bright colors By painting your walls with a bright color, the essence and vibrancy of the outdoors can be translated inside. For those who aren’t risk takers, focusing on one accent wall or introducing bright colors through the use of throw pillows or blankets is an easy (and maybe less daunting) way to bring the outdoors indoors. 2. Transform fabrics with scent

5. Blur the lines Bring the outdoor freshness inside your home by washing your fabrics with new Bounce Bursts. Bounce Bursts is a bead of concentrated outdoor freshness perfume ingredients that, when added directly to the wash cycle, gives your laundry an extra boost of outdoor freshness and transforms your fabrics, allowing you to experience outdoor freshness even if you are inside! Additionally, certain fragrances like the floral based perfumes which inspired Bounce Bursts’ Outdoor Fresh scent are known to stimulate the senses and improve mood and energy. 3. Add fresh flowers to

There’s really no difference in how you decorate from indoors to outdoors, so don’t be afraid to blur the lines. There are easy, functional and beautiful ways to use outdoor items inside, such as placing indoor/outdoor rugs in a kitchen or laundry room, incorporating outdoor fabrics in your children’s playroom, or placing all-weather baskets next to a fireplace or in a living room to hold extra blankets. To learn more about how Bounce Bursts can transform your fabrics, allowing you to experience outdoor freshness even if you are inside, visit www.bouncefresh.com.

Save energy and money by catching these invisible energy thieves

(BPT) - Today’s consumers are more environmentally conscious than ever before. They understand that making eco-friendly choices not only creates a positive impact on your surroundings, it can also translate into actual savings on monthly energy bills. If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint and make your home part of the “green” initiative, Christine Ackerson, head of sustainability at LG Electronics USA, offers the following tips to help you protect both the environment and your bottom line. * Get the most out of your refrigerator. Most consumers focus on keeping the inside of their refrigerators clean, but keeping the outside clean is just as important. Dusty coils actually can impact the refrigerator’s overall efficiency, because when dirty, they trap heat and prevent the refrigerator from cooling efficiently. The grills and coils should be cleaned once or twice a year and more often if you have pets. Use a vacuum cleaner with an attachment to clean the condenser cover and vents of

your refrigerator. You can also use a soft bristled brush to access some of the hard-to-reach areas. Also, older refrigerator models can use a lot of energy. Consider upgrading to an ENERGY STAR(R) qualified refrigerator, which is 20 percent more energy efficient than the federal minimum energy standard. You can also look for refrigerators with energy-saving technologies like a linear compressor. New refrigerator features like LG’s Door-in-Door can actually reduce cold air loss by up to 47 percent. The convenient door-within-a-door compartment on the fridge door allows quick, easy access to commonly used snacks and beverages without requiring you to open the entire refrigerator door. * Insulate your home. Heating and cooling your home is one of your biggest energy costs, and if your home isn’t properly insulated, you’re losing money. Start by closing your windows and sealing any drafty areas you find. Hire a professional to insulate drafty areas of your home if you don’t feel you

can handle them on your own. * Turn it off. Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips. Turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use as equipment still uses several watts of power when they are in standby mode. And be sure to unplug your cellphone charger when your device is fully charged. * Cold is the new hot. A quick tip when it comes to laundry is washing clothes with cold water whenever possible. Look for washers equipped with “cold wash” technology, which achieves cold water savings with warm water washing performance. Another way to save water is to try to wash full loads, or if you must wash a partial load, reduce the level of water

appropriately to avoid usage of extra water. * Do your research. Finding home appliances and electronics that are energy efficient is not difficult. Look for the ENERGY STAR “Most Efficient” designation when shopping for your next appliance, like LG's mega-capacity washer that allows you to wash more clothes with fewer loads. This distinction recognizes the most energy efficient products among those that already are ENERGY STAR qualified. Or look for an ENERGY STAR refrigerator that’s earned the Green Good Housekeeping Seal, an emblem given by the Good Housekeeping Research Institute in recognition of brand’s demonstration of environmental responsibility.
