Go big for less: 4 simple ways to make a small kitchen feel bigger (BPT) - Kitchen renovation is a common theme of home improvement shows, and it's typical for the host and designer to talk about removing interior walls and "bumping out" exterior ones in order to gain more space. Everyone wants a big, beautiful kitchen, but changing the footprint of yours isn't always practical, especially if you lack the budget of a home improvement show! You can make your snug kitchen feel bigger and fresher with a few smart improvements that don't involve wads of cash and tearing out walls. Here are four ways to create a brighter, more expansive feeling in any kitchen, no matter how small the square footage: Increase natural light Everything looks bigger and better in the daylight, but if your kitchen has just one small window over the sink or no windows at all, it can look dark and feel even smaller. Adding windows isn't always possible in a kitchen where you need to reserve wall space for cabinets and appliances. Skylights can be a cost-effective and quick way to bring more natural light into a kitchen - even if it doesn't have direct roof access. By adding Energy Starqualified, solar-powered, fresh-air skylights, like those from Velux America, you can greatly increase the amount of natural light while keeping functional wall space. For times when you want less light, the addition of solar-powered blinds, available in designer colors and patterns, allow you to attractively shade your skylights. Operated with a programmable touchpad remote control, today's skylights also feature a sensor that will automatically close them in case of rain. And there's a 30 percent federal tax

credit available to the homeowner on solar powered skylights, blinds and installation costs. As a cost-effective and easily installed alternative to traditional skylights, Sun Tunnel tubular skylights deliver natural light to spaces that don't have direct roof access. Optional light kits make them functional both day and night. To learn more, visit www.whyskylights.com. Take control of cabinets Who doesn't want more cabinet space? Storage is essential in a kitchen, but too many cabinets or too dark cabinetry can make an already small kitchen feel downright miniscule. Take a long, hard look at your kitchen cabinets. Do you really need all of them? If you decide you can make more efficient use of fewer cabinets, consider removing some to make the kitchen feel larger. If you just can't give up any cabinet space, you can still make your kitchen feel brighter by painting or staining them a lighter hue and using bright, reflective hardware in modern styles. Glass cabinet doors can also visually open up a kitchen - and inspire you to greater organization so that the inside of your cabinets always look guest-ready. Right-size appliances You may fantasize about a six-burner professional range or a massive built-in refrigerator, but appliances that are too big for a room fail on multiple levels. They not only make the room look smaller by virtue of their dominating size, they can hinder usability by obstructing other work areas like cabinets, counters and other appliances when the doors are open. Fortunately, appliance

makers offer products in multiple sizes and finishes to fit any space and design preference. Before you appliance shop, be sure to measure the spaces where the new pieces will reside in your kitchen. Further, keep in mind the overall scale of the room, too. If your kitchen is small, a massive refrigerator will overwhelm the space, even if designated cutout for the fridge is big enough to accommodate a large one. Brighten up Choosing lighter colors and finishes is the easiest, most cost-effective way to make any space look bigger. If you've

New Study Reveals America's Laundry Habits (BPT) - Whether you learned it from your mom or through trial and error during your first year in college, everyone has developed laundry habits that they'd be hard-pressed to break. But how are Americans doing laundry, and are the habits aligned with what cleaning experts recommends. To find out, Maytag partnered with Omnibus Research to survey Americans to uncover some interesting stats around how we approach laundry day. All Stained created equal? More than one-third (35 percent) of Americans say they treat all stains the same, and 42 percent of millennials are guilty of this. In reality, makeup stains, for example, should be treated very differently than grass or mustard stains, so check out this Stain Assist tool for specific instructions. On Switching Loads: Twothirds of Americans wait to

switch to their load to the dryer after the washing cycle finishes. This is why Maytag's new front load washer features the Fresh Hold® option, which keeps clean clothes smelling fresh in the washer with an internal fan and intermittent tumbling that circulate air through clothes for up to 12 hours after the wash cycle ends. Americans are going overboard with the suds: Onein-four Americans believe that more suds makes for cleaner clothes, but the opposite is actually true - experts say excess suds actually hold onto soils and redeposit them on your laundry. However, those with Maytag's new front load washer can rely on the Optimal Dose Dispenser, which adds the right amount of detergent when it's needed. Everyone has their own idea of how to tackle laundry day, but clearly there are a few improvements we can all make.

Tips for a bug-free backyard barbecue

(BPT) - What fun would a backyard barbecue be without special people to share it with? Your guests are as important to the fun as great food and good weather. However, there's one type of "guest" everyone can do without this summer - bugs. Stinging and biting insects can wreck even the best backyard gathering, unless you take steps to keep them away.

With increasing concern regarding Zika virus in the U.S., everyone's leastfavorite summer pest can be more than just an annoyance; mosquitoes may post a serious health risk, especially to pregnant women. What's more, while no one wants to get a mosquito bite, stings from wasps, hornets or yellowjackets may be more concerning for people with insect allergies as a

sting can be life-threatening. Keeping insects away from your outdoor gathering is an important way to ensure everyone stays healthy and enjoys the party. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) offers some tips for how you can keep pests like mosquitoes, ants, flies, hornets, wasps and other stinging and biting insects

away from your party and guests this summer:

insects to get inside. * If possible, plan to serve food and beverages indoors. Food left sitting outside on a patio or picnic table is more likely to attract insects, so reserve outdoor space for eating, entertaining and fun. * Check around your backyard to ensure there's no standing water. Birdbaths, wading pools, tire swings, children's toys, garden ponds and even puddles that collect in low spots in the yard can all serve as breeding locations for mosquitoes. * If you'll be entertaining outdoors at dusk and after dark, have plenty of insect repellent on hand for guests. Choose one with an EPA-registered active ingredient like DEET or Picaridin. While mosquitoes that carry Zika virus are active throughout the day, most mosquitoes are active at dusk and dawn, so consider using fans to keep insects away from outdoor seating areas.

Prep for the party

During the party

* Guests will be coming in and out of the house throughout the barbecue, so be sure doors close securely. Check screens for holes and repair any you find; small holes in screens can allow

* Strong fragrances from shampoo, perfume and candles can attract stinging insects like yellowjackets and wasps. They're also attracted to the aroma of food and drink. Suggest

guests avoid using scented items before the backyard party. Serve beverages in clear plastic cups; aluminum cans and plastic bottles provide hiding spots for stinging insects. * Use sealed coolers and containers to protect all food and beverages. The containers will not only keep bugs out of your food, they'll reduce the aroma that can attract insects. * If spills occur, wipe them up immediately from tables and other surfaces to reduce the chance they'll attract ants or other insects. * Clear trash away from your entertaining area immediately, and store it in sealed receptacles away from the entertaining area. Rinse all beverage bottles and cans before sealing them in the closed recycling or trash container. Post-party cleanup * After a good meal, and surrounded by friends, you may be tempted to let the dishware and utensils sit for a while as you chat with guests. Resist the temptation. Take utensils and dishware indoors right away to reduce the chance the smell of leftover food will attract unwanted insects. These simple preventive measures can help ensure your backyard barbecue remains as pest-free as possible. If you have a serious pest infestation, you may need to bring in a pest control professional. You can find a local, licensed pest control expert at www.pestworld.org, the website of the NPMA.

3 simple, fast changes to make your kitchen more usable and beautiful

(BPT) - Why do you want to remodel your kitchen? Sure, the cabinets date back to the disco era, but the doors and hardware all still work. Your stove may be older than your college senior, but you can still bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies in it. So why invest the time, money and emotional capital in renovating the most-used room in your home? If you're like most Americans, you'll undertake a kitchen renovation to make your life easier and happier. In a Houzz survey, 79 percent of homeowners who planned a kitchen project said they were doing it to improve the look and feel of the room, while 59 percent wanted to improve functions. The popular home improvement website Homeadvisor says that people incur, on average, $11,300 to $28,900 on kitchen remodeling projects. However, you can improve the look and functionality of your kitchen with a much lower investment. Here are three simple changes you can accomplish in a single weekend with a modest outlay of cash:

* Organize your storage Perhaps your kitchen storage space is simple, with a few basic cabinets on hand. Or it may be substantial, encompassing numerous cabinets, drawers and even a generous pantry. No matter the size, cluttered kitchen storage areas can seem inadequate and inefficient, especially when they spill over onto counters, where you end up storing things that don't fit into drawers and cabinets. Fortunately, a variety of budgetfriendly kitchen organization solutions are available for homeowners. From cabinet racks that hold dishes, pots and pans, lids and bakeware to over-thedoor racks to contain spices, soup cans, and more in your pantry. Make finding things in cabinets easier by installing pull-out racks. Under-shelf baskets allow you to use every available inch of space in cabinets, and are great for storing dish towels, place mats, measuring cups and more. Most of these organizers require little or no expertise to install. No need for a major renovation budget to achieve maximum impact with kitchen upgrades. By focusing on key areas like the faucets, cabinets and storage, you can greatly improve the look and function of a kitchen with a modest investment of time and money.

* Upgrade your faucet to touchless A kitchen faucet is a critical tool for numerous kitchen tasks, while also having a major impact on the overall look of your kitchen. A new faucet can improve the beauty and functionality of your kitchen, and touchless options fit the bill perfectly. Hands-free kitchen faucets are easy to use for kids, seniors and people with mobility issues. Plus, they allow you to operate your faucet without spreading germs - even if your hands are messy from food preparation and cooking. Touchless faucets like the sleek, high-arc Beale Selectronic Kitchen Faucet from American Standard offer advanced flexibility to make common kitchen tasks feel effortless. You can operate this electronic faucet with a wave of your hand, or switch to manual operation by simply sliding an innovative movable door to cover the sensor when guests are visiting. Two spray patterns, plus a convenient pause feature, provide optimum functionality for casual users and home chefs alike.

* Hush those cabinets and drawers Anyone who has been woken from a deep sleep by a drawer or cabinet door closing loudly in the kitchen will appreciate the idea of a device that prevents slamming. When the quietclose feature first appeared on the scene, it was considered a luxury upgrade, and one generally available only by installing completely new cabinets and drawers. Now, a variety of kits are available to turn ordinary cabinets and drawers into ones that close softly and quietly. Enhancing kitchen drawers to soft-close is as simple as emptying them, sliding them out, and replacing the standard slide hardware with a quiet-close apparatus. Silencing kitchen cabinets is even easier to do - simply add sounddampening hardware, which is available at any home improvement store.

Battling mosquitoes? Eliminate standing water to deprive bugs of breeding spots (BPT) - Malaria, West Nile virus and heartworms - as if you didn't already have enough reasons to fear and loathe mosquitoes and the illnesses they spread, now there's Zika, a virus that is possibly linked to birth defects. Mosquitoes are much more than itchy nuisances; the illnesses they can transmit with their bite kill thousands of humans every year. In fact, some scientists believe malaria, a mosquito-borne illness, has killed one out of every two humans who has ever lived, according to a report in National Geographic. Keeping mosquitoes away from your home, yard and family is much more than a matter of convenience; it may help preserve your health. Eliminating standing water from your property is the single most effective thing you can do as a homeowner to minimize the presence of mosquitoes around your property. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water - puddles and standing water in your yard can be a breeding ground. "When warm weather arrives, that low spot in the backyard where water always collects becomes much more troublesome than just being an eyesore," says Ryan Larsen, a civil engineer with NDS Inc., a leading manufacturer of water management solutions. "It will attract mosquitoes that will want to lay their eggs in that standing water, but first they need to bite a human or two." Homeowners may think solving their drainage problems will be difficult and costly, or that they'll end up with an ugly drainage ditch on their property. But Larsen says it is possible to eliminate standing water cost-effectively and attractively. He suggests homeowners take these five simple steps: 1. Identify actual or potential trouble spots. Is there a low area in the yard where water collects after rain? Are any downspouts or gutters on your home clogged with debris? Does water linger along a retaining wall, edging, walkway or patio after you've irrigated the lawn? Mosquitoes can lay their eggs in very shallow standing water, so anywhere water collects could be a breeding ground. 2. Address the easy fixes first. The gutters, downspouts and minor collection spots are easily addressed by simply clearing away the obstructions. When those issues are resolved, homeowners should concentrate on addressing low areas, Larsen says. "These muddy, wet areas look bad, can kill grass, attract mosquitos and eventually lead to more serious damage to a property," he says. 3. Determine the scope of the problem. Standing water on a property can occur in multiple spots, from walkways to lawns. NDS offers an online Home Drainage Center to help you identify your problem, possible solutions and whether the resolution is a DIY project or if you'll need to hire a professional. 4. Choose and install your solution. French drains, underground drainage and catch basins are typical solutions for many home drainage problems. Placing drainage underground not only minimizes the risk of mosquitoes breeding in standing water, it can preserve the visual appeal of your landscape. For example, for NDS drainage solutions that involve catch basins, the company offers a wide selection of decorative catch basin grates, so the portion of the system you can't hide will be visually appealing. Most drainage systems can be installed in just one weekend. 5. Take steps to protect yourself. Mosquitoes have been around since the time of the dinosaurs (and they've been spreading malaria for that long, too), according to National Geographic. While eliminating standing water on your property will go a long way toward reducing the number of mosquitoes in your environment, it's virtually impossible to remove them entirely. The American Mosquito Control Association says some mosquitoes will travel 40 miles or more in search of a meal. When outdoors, wear insect repellant on exposed skin and clothing. Choose repellants with an active ingredient like DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Dark colors attract mosquitoes, so wear lighter colored clothing, and burn citronella candles or run a fan near the ground when you're enjoying your deck or patio.
