JOEL WERNICK President / Chief Executive Officer, Phoebe Putney Health System You probably have a loved one who graduated recently, excitedly moving on to a new phase of life. This is an important time of new beginnings at Phoebe as well. Each June, Phoebe graduates a class of residents from our Phoebe Family Medicine Residency (PFMR). At the same time, we welcome a new first-year resident class to southwest Georgia. The residents’ welcome ceremony is always one of the most exciting Phoebe events every year. Our main campus Wetherbee Lobby will be packed with business and political leaders as well as members of the Phoebe Family. Virtually no community in the country welcomes physician residents to town quite like Albany does. It’s because community leaders understand and appreciate the importance these young physicians represent to our corner of the

Peach State. At the ceremony, leaders of our medical staff will present each new resident with a white lab coat and a pager as symbols of his or her new role as a working physician. And, residents wheel away a big suitcase of goodies from generous local merchants. This June, we also will congratulate five members of the graduating 2017 residency class. Those physicians (Dr. Danielle Andrews, Dr. Sarah Codrea, Dr. Justin Lancaster, Dr. John Macon and Dr. Jennifer Yam) have treated many of you as they worked at Phoebe Primary Care at Northwest. They have served our community well the past three years. Many PFMR graduates continue to serve southwest Georgians long after they complete their residencies. Since our residency program began 24 years ago, we have graduated more than 100 physicians. Nearly 80% have stayed

in Georgia to practice, most of them in southwest Georgia. The success of this strategy our volunteer board members started a quarter century ago has reversed a medical manpower crisis in our region and greatly increased access to primary care. The recent opening of Flaggstone, our new medical student housing complex for members of the residency program as well as Medical College of Georgia students and University of Georgia pharmacy students, further enhances our ability to attract some of the top young healthcare professionals in the country. If you know any of our graduating residents, please congratulate them on their accomplishments. If you meet any of our new residents, we hope you’ll show you them your best southern hospitality. We need them, and more young physicians like them, to join us in calling southwest Georgia home.

According to the CDC, for every 100,000 men and women in Georgia, on average, approximately 450 were diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Although the CDC stated rates are steadily decreasing in Georgia, it is imperative that we keep fighting together!

ozens of streaming video providers are making it easier than ever to watch the TV programming you want when you want it, and exclusive programming released an entire season at a time is transforming the way Americans watch TV. The flip side of this convenience is a surge in binge-watching, which can have some negative side effects, including binge eating. When your favorite show is available back-to-back, it’s easy to let substantial blocks of time get away as you watch “just one more” episode to follow the twists and turns of the plot. In fact, according to a recent survey by Dole, the average bingewatching session clocks in around 5 hours. The same survey found that more than two-thirds of people prefer healthy snacks to fuel their marathon viewing. Protecting Your Child In the United States, approximately 30,000 cancers caused by HPV are diagnosed each year. Nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by infection ZLWK KLJK ULVN W\SHV RI +39 7KH YLUXV DOVR KDV EHHQ OLQNHG WR ¿YH other types of cancer.

It is estimated that 79 million Americans are currently infected and that there are 14 million new HPV infections each year. Many people who are infected will never know it. However, there is a safe and effective tool to prevent this cancer burden – the HPV vaccine. Cancer Prevention The HPV vaccine prevents the nine types of HPV that cause 90 percent of all cervical cancers DQG SUH FDQFHUV DV ZHOO DV PRVW cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus and throat. It also helps prevent infection by the two types of HPV that cause most genital warts. However, the vaccine works only if given well before an infection occurs. That’s why, in part, the American Cancer Society recommends that boys and girls JHW WKH YDFFLQH DW DJHV WR

HPV 101 „

HPV is short for human papilloma virus.

„

HPV’s are a large group of related viruses, each of which is given a number called an HPV type.

„

Most HPV types cause warts on skin of the arms, chests, hands and feet.

„

Genital HPV types are found on mucous membranes, such as the vagina, anus, mouth and throat, rather than on skin.

„

Cancers linked to HPV infection include: cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal, mouth and throat.

„

HPV is common. Most men and women who have ever had sex will get HPV at some point in their lives, but in most cases it goes away without treatment.

„

There is no treatment for HPV, but there are treatments for the cell changes that HPV can cause.

„

Most HPV infections that lead to cancer can be prevented with vaccines, and most cervical cancers can be prevented with regular screenings.

HPV Vaccine Facts and Fears As a way to help protect children from getting cancer as they get older, the American Cancer Society recommends HPV vaccines as a safe and effective practice. However, there are myths and rumors surrounding WKH SRWHQWLDOO\ OLIH VDYLQJ YDFFLQH

The vaccine is safe. :KLOH LW PD\ PDNH VRPH SHRSOH GL]]\ DQG QDXVHDWHG IROORZLQJ LQ jection, the vaccine rarely causes bad side effects. Instead, there may be common side effects like pain, redness or swelling where the shot was given.

The vaccine doesn’t cause fertility problems. Research shows that HPV vaccines don’t cause fertility problems, and can actually help protect women from future fertility problems linked to cervical cancer.

The vaccine doesn’t contain harmful ingredients. Some parents may worry about the presence of aluminum in the vaccine, but it’s a safe amount. Vaccines containing aluminum have been in use for years and used on more than 1 billion people.

The vaccine is for males and females. While cervical cancer is one of the main cancers caused by HPV, the HPV vaccine is for both males and females. There are also cancers found in men that can be caused by HPV, including cancers of the anus, penis, throat and tongue.


Homelessness And Our Health The numbers are staggering and embarrassing: According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, on any given night in the U.S., there are over 550,000 homeless Americans living in shelters or on the streets. Over the course of one year, from 2013-2014, around 2.5 million kids -- a historic high - experienced homelessness at some point, according to the nonprofit group the American Society for the Positive Care for Children.

Who are these people? Neighbors, classmates of your children, people working at minimum-wage jobs. Approximately 195,000 are people in families. Only 75,000 are chronically homeless. Yet it is the chronically homeless -- those who are addicted, mentally ill, longtime residents of the streets -- who are the public face of homelessness. As a result, many people turn away from looking at the problem and fail to understand the cost economically and in terms of public and personal health. CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, the causes of homelessness are an increasing lack of employment opportunities and affordable housing, a rise in foreclosure rates, a decline in public assistance and a lack of affordable health care. People fall into poverty and are one illness, one accident or one missed paycheck away from finding themselves living in their car, in a shelter or on the streets. THE CONSEQUENCES Once homeless, health problems multiply quickly. For young children, homelessness can lead to changes in brain architecture that can interfere with emotional self-regulation, cognitive skills and social relationships. Homeless

children are twice as likely to have a learning disability, repeat a grade or to be suspended from school. In addition, exposure to violence, always a component of homelessness, can result in post-traumatic stress disorder, which means children may develop psychosocial and behavioral difficulties, ranging from withdrawal to aggression to substance-abuse problems. Health issues like ear infections, asthma, iron deficiency anemia and obesity (associated with worry about going hungry and access to only poor-quality food) are common in homeless children.

Adults also suffer profound health risks when they become homeless. The Street Health Report conducted in Toronto in 2007 found that compared with the general population homeless people are five times more likely to have heart disease; four times more likely to have cancer; three and a half times more likely to have asthma; three times more likely to have arthritis or rheumatism; and twice as likely to have diabetes.

In large skillet over medium heat, melt 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil. When hot, add banana pancake batter to pan, making three mini pancakes at a time, each about 3 inches in diameter. Cook until pancakes are golden in color, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook another 3 minutes. Place cooked pancakes on plate and continue until all batter is used, adding additional coconut oil as needed.

A healthy combination of plantbased foods and turkey easily turns into a quick lunch. This wrap brings together a variety of textures with crunchiness from the apples and spinach, substance from the turkey and creamy, simple dressing. Find more quick, healthy recipes at aicr.org.

Turkey, Spinach and Apple Wrap

Recipe reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research 1 tablespoon reduced-fat mayonnaise 2 teaspoons honey mustard 2 whole-wheat lavash wraps or flour tortillas (8 inches each) 2 cups baby spinach leaves, loosely packed, washed and dried 4 thin slices turkey breast 1/4 Granny Smith apple, sliced paper-thin Combine mayonnaise and mustard. Lay out both wraps. Spread edges of each with mayonnaise mixture. Leaving space on one side of wraps, arrange layer of greens on top of wraps. Top each layer with two slices of turkey. Evenly divide apple slices and lay lengthwise across turkey. Fold over one end of wrap then both sides. Roll wrap as tightly as possible toward opposite side. Cover each wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate seamside down, up to 4 hours, before serving. To serve, remove plastic wrap and cut each wrap in half at an angle. Substitution: Two large leaves of soft, leafy green lettuce can be used in place of baby spinach leaves.

Baked Greek Chicken Salad

Recipe courtesy of the National Chicken Council Servings: 4 Tomato-Cucumber Salsa: 2 plum tomatoes, diced 1 small cucumber, peeled and sliced 1/2 green pepper, julienned 1/4 purple onion, sliced 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon basil 1/8 teaspoon oregano 1/8 teaspoon Greek seasoning 1/8 teaspoon sugar 1/8 teaspoon dry mustard Salad: 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves

1 cup asparagus, cut into 2-inch pieces 1/2 cup shitake mushroom caps, sliced 1 package Seeds of Change Quinoa, Brown & Red Rice with Flaxseeds 1/4 cup slivered almonds Salsa Verde (optional): 1 bunch scallions 1 clove garlic 1/2 cup packed cilantro leaves 1/2 cup packed mint leaves 1/2 cup packed basil leaves 1/2 cup lemon juice 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil Heat oven to 400 F. In oven-proof pan, season salmon with salt and pepper, and drizzle each fillet with olive oil. Bake 12-15 minutes, until cooked through. In blender or food processor, combine all Salsa Verde ingredients and pulse until fully incorporated but still rustic and chunky. Set aside. In medium saute pan over medium-high heat, heat remaining olive oil. Add mushrooms and asparagus and saute vigorously 3-5 minutes. Add grains and slivered almonds, and continue to saute until heated through, about 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, to taste. Divide grains among eight plates, place a piece of salmon on each plate then finish with dollop of Salsa Verde, if desired, and serve. Substitution: Shitake mushroom caps may be substituted with button mushrooms or other wild mushrooms.

Chill until ready to serve. Heat oven to 350 F. Place chicken in baking dish. In medium bowl, mix together butter, lemon juice, pepper, garlic powder, oregano and Greek seasoning; pour over chicken. Bake about 50 minutes, uncovered, basting occasionally. Place salad greens in large serving bowl. Top with Tomato-Cucumber Salsa. Slice chicken in thin strips and arrange on top of salad. Sprinkle with feta cheese and garnish with olives and pepper.
