Article by JENNIFER KING jennifer.king@albanyherald.com The front entrance opens to reveal a large family room with gleaming hardwood floors and a vaulted ceiling. Centered at the rear of the space is a cozy fireplace for cooler nights. An adjacent exterior door leads out back to the covered patio. An archway leads from the family room into the eat-in kitchen. Here there is a naturaltone tiled floor and contrasting dark gray countertops. White
custom cabinets brighten the space. The dining space is situated in front of a double window for plenty of natural light. This home features a split floor plan, so the master benefits from added privacy. The master bedroom is riddled with sunny windows, and it features a private master bathroom. A large garden tub and an extra long vanity make the space feel
luxurious. On the opposite side of the home, two additional bedrooms share a full bathroom. Stay safe from mosquito-borne illnesses with these simple tips (BPT) - Despite recent news that Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that can carry Zika, chikungunya and other viruses has spread to 30 states, the majority of Americans have yet to embrace basic recommendations to help reduce the mosquito population at their own homes. That's the result of a new survey fielded by TNS Global detailing homeowners' knowledge of steps to reduce mosquitoes in their yards. According to The Mosquito Squad Fight the Bite Report, nearly three quarters of Americans (74 percent) do not plan to modify their time outside this year, yet less than half (49 percent) follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation to use mosquito repellent and just a third (36 percent) remove standing water, a simple task also recommended by the CDC, to reduce mosquito breeding. "Unlike chikungunya and West Nile virus, Zika has been identified as a world health crisis and we must work together on personal, local and global levels to fight mosquitoes," says Scott Zide, a founder and president of Mosquito Squad, the largest and most experienced home and commercial mosquito control firm in the country. "Removal of standing water is the most essential tactic in mosquito elimination, yet homeowners aren't actively removing it, which is surprising given that mosquito concerns are so high." According to Zide, just as surprising was the finding that 46 percent of homeowners surveyed said they did not plan to do anything different in their yards, despite recent news of Zika virus. Findings from the survey show:
* Only 36 percent of Americans turn over toys or items in their yards that contain water. * Less than half (44 percent) throw out lawn debris, under which mosquitoes can breed. * Just a quarter of Americans (25 percent) shake out tarps, including barbecue and fire pit covers, to remove water that accumulates. * Less than 27 percent make sure their gutters are clean. * More than a quarter (27 percent) walk their yard regularly to remove items that can harbor mosquitoes. To help homeowners take control of their yard, Mosquito Squad experts urge customers to take an active role in mosquito control with the following tips: Tip over anything that holds
or collects water. A bottle cap filled with water holds enough water for mosquitoes to breed. Since mosquitoes breed in standing water, the elimination of standing water decreases a mosquito's breeding ground. Mosquito Squad technicians report that yards with bird baths, play sets with tire swings, tree houses, portable fireplaces and pits and catch basins are the biggest offenders. Toss any yard trash including clippings, leaves and twigs. Even the smallest items can provide a haven for mosquitoes and increase the population. Turn over items that could hold water and trash. Look for children's portable sandboxes, slides or plastic toys; underneath and around downspouts; in plant saucers, empty pots, light fixtures and dog water bowls. Eliminate these items or keep them turned over until used.

Despite taking all precautions in your own home, talking with neighbors is a key component to mosquito control. Townhomes and homes with little space between lots mean that mosquitoes can breed at a neighbor's home, and affect your property. Treat your yard and yourself. Utilize a professional mosquito elimination barrier treatment around the home and yard. Using a barrier treatment at home reduces the need for using DEETcontaining bug spray on the body. Individuals who want a more comprehensive mosquito control treatment can utilize Mosquito Squad, which uses the latest EPAregistered mosquito control barrier treatments, larvicide and all-natural substances to eliminate mosquitoes from yards and outdoor spaces. Remove tarps that can catch water. Many homeowners have tarps or covers on items residing in their outdoor spaces. If not stretched taut, they are holding water. Check tarps over firewood piles, portable fire places, recycling cans, boats, sports equipment and grills. Mosquito Squad suggests using bungee cords to secure tarps in the yard. Take care of your home. Proper maintenance can be a deciding factor in property values and mosquito bites. Regularly clean out gutters and make sure the downspout is attached properly. Mosquito Squad recommends regrading areas where water stands more than a few hours, and to regularly check irrigation systems to ensure that they aren't leaking and causing a breeding haven. Keep lawn height low and areas weed-free. Team up with neighbors.

Understand the mechanics behind a saltwater filter COURTESY OF METROCONNECTION
Summer is pool season. Come spring, homeowners prepare their backyard pools for several months of leisurely floating or engaging games of aquatic volleyball. This preparation includes uncovering the pool and rebalancing the pool’s chemical levels. Pool preparation and maintenance also includes installing a working filter. While there are many different types of pool filters and filter mediums, in recent years, saltwater filter systems have been growing in popularity. Consumers who want to upgrade to a saltwater system may be interested in learning a bit more about how such systems work. Saltwater systems are those in which chlorine is generated by the system itself. These systems do not usually require the addition of a powdered or
liquid form of chlorine. Electrolysis occurs thanks to a chemical process that involves pool water passing through a salt cell and being exposed to a low-voltage current. This essentially breaks up the sodium chloride molecules (salt) into hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite, which are sanitizing agents. Therefore, saltwater systems are not chlorine-free. They just produce chlorine from a less caustic material. One of the main advantages to a saltwater system is the constant generation of free chlorine. Pool water chemistry is often broken down into FC (free chlorine) and CC (combined available chlorine). FC is yet untouched chlorine that can do its sanitizing job. CC contains chlorine and chloramines, which are produced when the chlorine comes in contact with urine,
sweat and other contaminants present in the pool. CC is what contributes to the “chlorine smell” of the water. When there isn’t enough FC and there’s too much CC, pool water levels need to be returned to optimal conditions, usually through a shocking process. However, with saltwater systems, there’s always an abundance of FC being delivered into the water, making levels superchlorinated, and these systems eliminate the formation of CC. Saltwater chlorine generators require few, if any, additional chemicals, as they produce nearly neutral pH levels. This isn’t always the case with other chlorine sources, which can raise or lower pH or add to the presence of other substances, such as calcium, in the water with calcium hypochlorite sanitizers.
Because these saltwater filtration and chlorinegenerating systems are relatively automatic, they also can mean less maintenance. This is handy for homeowners who go on vacation or do not want to be hassled by the daily care other systems may require. One of the disadvantages to saltwater systems is the cost, which can be prohibitive to
some people. According to Thursday Pool Manufacturing, installing the average system costs anywhere from $800 to $2,000. But some feel that cost is offset by the money saved on pool chemicals over the course of a season. Switching to a chlorinegenerating saltwater filtration system can be a worthwhile investment for many pool owners.

5 ways to beautify your deck without breaking the bank
Help plants survive sizzling summer heat
(BPT) - Are you ready to put your deck on the best-dressed list this summer, but hesitant to dent your savings? With these simple design ideas, you can make your deck the perfect place for summer festivities. 1. Accessorize with railings. An easy way to give your deck a beauty boost is to update the railing. The decorative details of this safety feature are easy to overlook during the initial deck building process. Thankfully, with today's products, it's easy and affordable to turn this eyesore into an accessory. For example, by replacing outdated railings with those that complement your deck boards and home's exterior trim, you can create an outdoor living space that's a wellstyled extension of your home. If you have a non-traditional deck, cable rails or mixed medium infills like tempered glass panels may be your style. Or, if you want to mix modern with traditional elements, consider letting guests lean on attractive, but affordable aluminum rail systems like MoistureShield Pro. "The sleek lines of aluminum railing are the perfect counterpart to today's contemporary spaces," says Brent Gwatney, senior vice president, MoistureShield Composite Decking. "They're a less obtrusive railing option and give decks a high-end, custom feel without the high-end price tag, and tend to be backed with long-term warranties." COURTESY OF METROCONNECTION
Many people consider summer the most enjoyable time of year, as the summer sun and warm breezes make the season perfect for rest and relaxation. But the months of June, July and August, which are often characterized by rising temperatures and stifling humidity, can be tough to endure as well. When summer heat becomes especially uncomfortable, humans can simply head indoors and beat the heat in air conditioned buildings and homes. Plant life is not so lucky, and homeowners may need to take steps to help the plant life on their properties survive the summer heat. • Monitor soil moisture. Soil moisture, or a lack thereof, can help homeowners determine if their plants are struggling to survive the heat. To check soil moisture levels, use a ruler or even your finger, sticking either two inches into the ground where you suspect the soil is drying out. If the soil is damp two inches below the surface, then your plants are likely retaining enough moisture to withstand the heat. If the soil is dry two inches below, then you may want to give the soil a deep soak. • Keep an eye on container gardens. Containers may have an especially difficult time staying moist in the summer heat. That’s particularly true for containers that sit in direct sunlight. Water container gardens daily during summer heat waves, being sure to adhere to any local water
restrictions. • Lay down mulch. Mulch helps insulate and protect soil during summer, when soil can quickly dry out. When applied correctly (ideally before summer temperatures get too hot), mulch helps the soil conserve moisture and prevents weed growth. Weeds can rob soil of the water it needs to promote strong root systems, which can help plants get the nutrients they need to withstand summer heat. Mulched soils also do not experience the fluctuations in temperature that non-mulched soils can experience during summer heat waves, helping plants to grow evenly. • Move plants when possible. Plant location can affect their chances of surviving summer heat. Driveways lined with flowers or other plants may look nice, but driveways exposed to the sun can radiate heat at temperatures that exceed the temperatures noted on the thermometer. If possible, move plants to locations on your property that are less exposed to the heat and/or less likely to be affected by the heat. Move container plants beneath trees on hot days, and consider summer heat waves before planting new flower beds. Summer heat can be especially harmful to plant life. But homeowners can employ various strategies to protect the plant life on their properties when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer.
2. Block the sun beautifully. Another way to balance form with function is to shade your deck in style. Fortunately, there are a number of beautiful, low-cost ways to block the sun that go beyond the patio umbrella. Pergolas are a popular way to shade your space without breaking the bank. You can vary the direction of the beams to create interest, weave fabric panels across the top to create a cozy respite or use the structure to frame a view. Screening trellises are another affordable option for relief from direct sunlight. They can disguise an unsightly view, soften your deck or provide an attractive backsplash for an outdoor kitchen, while adding shade and privacy. You can even bend high performance decking materials, like composite decking, to curve around existing trees to let nature act as your canopy. 3. Plant a deck-adent garden Deckscaping is a timeless, low-cost way to turn your outdoor living space into a backyard beauty. Placing shrubs or a curving flowerbed along the perimeter of your deck can soften its edges and add colorful accents. Alternatively, bringing planters on deck with a mix of annuals and perennials can quickly turn a bland deck into a garden retreat full of seasonal blooms. If your deck is small, consider keeping floor space free with a gorgeous overhead garden. Hanging flower baskets and trellises with climbing vines are simple and affordable space-savers that can make covered deck spaces resemble a spa-like retreat. 4. Dress your deck to impress To finish your deck and give it that one-of-a-kind feel, outfit it the same way you would an interior room, thinking about color and texture. While this may sound expensive, there are plenty of practical, budget friendly ways to make your deck a stylish extension of your home. You can easily spice it up with painted furniture and fun accents. Pretty and durable accent pillows made from outdoor fabrics are an inexpensive way to add pops of color. Or if you find an outdoor fabric that you love you can make bench cushions to give your outdoor seating a cozy feel. Accents like an outdoor rug can tie it all together by adding texture underfoot, keeping dirt from being tracked inside your home, and defining areas for different uses. 5. Light up your evenings in style Finally, don't neglect how your deck looks when the sun goes down. With the right lighting, you can extend your hours outside and keep your deck as charming in the nighttime as it is during the day. From subtle post lights that cast a magical evening glow to understated recessed lights and rail strip lights that help guide guests' steps, today's deck lighting choices are both functional and affordable. And, with the emergence of energy-efficient LEDs, you can use them liberally with little effect on your monthly electricity bill. So, let your imagination roam with nighttime illumination options to add after-dark ambience to your outdoor retreat.

From amateur to expert: 5 gardening hacks you need to know (BPT) - Gardening isn't just a hobby, it's a lifestyle. Connecting with nature, being outdoors and putting in the needed work for a beautiful result is the ultimate reward. As an avid gardener, you're always looking for new ways to outshine the previous year and achieve bigger, lusher results. If you've been using the same techniques for years, it might be time to add something new to your repertoire and bring your garden to the next level with these tips: Use citrus peel starter pots Did you know leftover citrus peels create the perfect starter pot for your seedlings? Before you plant them in your garden, make sure your seedlings are growing strong and healthy. Turn any citrus peel into a seedling pot by poking a hole in the bottom for drainage. Fill it with potting soil, then add seeds and water. The acidic peel creates the perfect environment for your seedling to thrive. When the time comes to plant the seedling in your garden, you can even plant the peel. It will add acidity to your soil and take about six to nine months to decompose. Solder a trellis With just a little copper pipe or flexible copper tubing, solder and an easy-to-use torch, such as the Bernzomatic TS4000 High Heat Torch, you can create a beautiful trellis for your tomato plants, climbing ivy, roses or any arrangement you can dream up. Use this opportunity to get creative! You can go traditional, or create your own unique design and pattern using online sites like Pinterest for ideas (search metal trellis and prepare to be inspired). Just be sure to wear safety goggles and gloves and take all safety precautions. Weed your garden with fire
No one likes seeing those pesky weeds poke out of their driveway or pavers. Flame weeding with a torch like the Bernzomatic JT850 Lawn & Garden Torch, is a fast, effective way to kill weeds without applying chemicals to your lawn. The torch has a 36-inch extended reach so you don't have to bend over and strain your back. Simply clear the area of loose combustible materials, sweep the flame over the roots of the weeds, then sweep away the extinguished remnants from the area. Remember, never burn poison ivy or other poisonous plants. The smoke can cause serious allergic reactions. Use safety precautions and make sure the weed is wilted at a minimum before you torch.

Make your own compost Put down landscaping fabric If you want to prevent weeds before they even sprout, try landscaping fabric. Not only will it protect your garden from weeds, but it will also keep the roots of your plants warm when the spring weather is still cool. Start by laying out the fabric on a firesafe surface, then use a torch, either a handheld torch or a lawn and garden torch, to burn holes for planting. Burning holes helps the fabric last longer and prevents it from fraying. It's important to follow safety instructions, work over a fire-safe surface and keep flammable materials out of the burn zone.
Why spend money on something that's so easy to make yourself? Making your own garden compost takes very little time or effort. You can use dead and rotting leaves, eggshells, unused tomatoes, cucumbers or any other organic products you find in your kitchen to make the compost. Put it all together in a container and give them some time to disintegrate. Then, combine your mixture with soil and you have your own, virtually free compost to give your plants the nutrients they need. Let these tips help you grow your best garden yet. Millions of grilling enthusiasts take to their backyards each year to cook delicious foods over an open flame. Grilling is embedded in the history of many cultures, and to this day many people feel nothing beats the savory flavor characteristic of grilled meats, poultry, seafood, and vegetables. Although many people safely enjoy outdoor barbecues every day, accidents can happen. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, roughly 6,000 grill fires take place on residential property every year in the United States alone. Many grilling accidents can be prevented with some safety precautions and a little common sense. When grilling, place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be at least 10 feet away from the house when they are in use. Also, keep the grill away from wooden overhangs or other structures attached to the house, such as garages and porches. Before using a gas grill, inspect it to make sure there are no gas leaks. Ensure hoses are properly connected and that the grill looks in good repair. Use propane and charcoal grills outdoors only. Never bring such grills into your house, even if it seems like there is ample ventilation. Potentially fatal carbon monoxide can build up quickly.

Keep children and pets away from the grill area. Grills can be knocked over easily, and kids and pets may burn themselves if they bump into a hot grill. Clean the grill regularly. Grease and fat buildup forms in the tray below the grill and can be quite flammable. By brushing off the grates after each use and periodically removing food and grease buildup, you can prevent flare-ups that may ignite the grill. Always tend the grill while cooking. Walking away for even a minute may lead to accidents. Store unused propane tanks upright at all times to prevent leakage. Keep them outdoors and beyond the reach of children. Never smoke near propane cylinders and never move a lit grill. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the event of a flare-up. A hose may not prove effective on a grease fire. It’s also important to emphasize food safety when grilling. Invest in a food thermometer so you can test the internal temperature of foods and prevent foodborne illnesses. Grilling is a great and flavorful way to cook. But safety must remain a priority when grilling.
