Paramedicine EMS Professions
Emergency Medical Technician Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
EMT/PARAMEDICINE People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. Incidents such as automobile accidents, heart attacks, slips and falls, childbirth, and gunshot wounds require immediate medical attention. In an emergency, EMTs and paramedics are typically dispatched by a 911 operator to the scene, where they often work with police and firefighters. Once they arrive, EMTs and paramedics assess the nature of the patient’s condition, while trying to determine whether the patient has any pre-existing medical conditions. Following protocols and guidelines, they provide emergency care and transport the patient to a medical facility. All EMS students have mandatory clinical requirements in the emergency center/ hospital as well as in an area Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department. Students participate in real emergencies, working with nurses, veteran paramedics, and Advanced EMTs as they take care of sick and injured patients.
OPTIONS FOR OBTAINING CREDENTIALS ENTRY LEVEL - Graduates of the EMS Professions program will receive a diploma and two Technical Certificates of Credit (TCCs) for Emergency Medical Technician (EMJ1) and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMH1). After completing the first two of three semesters, students are eligible to take the National Registry EMT Certification Exam and can begin working with area EMS departments. After successful completion of the third semester, students can earn their National Registry Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification.
Albany Tech’s new Fire and Emergency Services Associate of Applied Science degree gives students dual training as a firefighter and as an AEMT. ADVANCED LEVEL - Students with AEMT certification are eligible to enter the Paramedic program and earn advanced certification as a paramedic. This major has both a degree and a diploma tract. Students who earn an associate degree are eligible to take the National Registry Paramedic Exam. Once certified, students may apply for their Georgia Paramedic License and begin working as a paramedic in any EMS department, hospital, or clinic that employs paramedics. Students who earn the Paramedicine diploma are eligible to take the National Registry Paramedic Exam and obtain their Georgia Paramedic License to begin working as a paramedic in any EMS department, hospital, or clinic that employs paramedics. Historically, 100 percent of Albany Tech graduates from the EMT/Paramedicine program find employment in this field.

DIPLOMA Health Information Coding
HEALTH INFORMATION CODING The growing field of health information technology has created a demand for medical coders. The medical coding professional is responsible for translating healthcare providers’ diagnostic and procedural phrases into coded form. Coding professionals do this by reviewing and analyzing health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures. This translation process requires interaction with the health care provider to ensure terms are translated correctly. Certified medical coders are trained in the anatomy and physiology of the human body and disease processes in order to understand the etiology, pathology, symptoms, signs, diagnostic studies, treatment modalities, and prognosis of diseases and procedures to be coded. The job entails knowledge of disease processes and procedural techniques to consistently apply the correct codes. The code must be correct to ensure medical records properly reflect a patient’s care and the revenue due to the facility. A medical coding professional works as part of a team to achieve the best quality patient care. This program teaches students current medical coding procedures and guidelines. Students will learn how to accurately assign codes to diagnoses and procedures which are used for health data and processing medical bills. Albany Tech’s curriculum for this program is based on degree entry-level competencies outlined by the American Health Information Management Association. The Health Information Coding Diploma courses are offered online.
Students will earn a Health Information Coding Diploma. The Health Information Coding Diploma prepares students to take the CPC Coding Certification Exam. ADVANCED MEDICAL IMAGING
This long-standing program at Albany Tech now incorporates modern digital radiography in its curriculum, giving students the leading edge in hands-on training and making them more competitive in this field that specializes in the imaging of human anatomy. Students learn diagnostic imaging examinations such as x-rays and fluoroscopic exams.
As demand for qualified employees in the medical field increases, so too does the need for advanced radiologic technologists. The Advanced Medical Imaging Associate of Applied Science degree program provides educational opportunities to the post-graduate registered Radiologic Technologist, registered Radiation Therapist and registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist. It provides students with the knowledge needed to perform MRI and CT exams.
Radiographers often produce x-ray films (radiographs) of parts of the human body for use in diagnosing medical problems. They prepare patients for radiologic examinations by explaining the procedure and positioning patients so that the parts of the body can be appropriately radiographed. Admission to the Radiologic Technology Program is competitive and requires a 2.75 GPA average or higher and all core requirements completed by end of Fall semester or have these core requirements as transfer credit with the minimum 2.75 GPA average from other schools. Students will earn a Radiologic Technology Associate of Applied Science degree and will be eligible to sit for a national certification examination for radiographers given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Graduates will be qualified for employment as certified entry-level radiologic technologists in urgent care centers, doctor’s offices, specialty offices/clinics, free-standing imaging centers, and hospitals.

The program emphasizes a combination of classroom and clinical instruction, training Albany Tech students with cutting-edge technology and the latest innovations and demands of the imaging industry. Computed Tomography Technologists use a rotating x-ray unit and sensor assembly to observe “slices” of anatomy within the body, creating a series of diagnostic images that physicians can cycle through. Magnetic Resonance Technologists perform MRI scans which use radiofrequency pulse to create a 3-D representation of the anatomy. Applicants must be a registered Radiologic Technologist, registered Radiation Therapist or registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist in good standing. Students may enter the major at any point during Academic Year, however, the CT courses will begin in the Summer of each year and the MRI will begin in the Fall each year. Program graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Advanced Medical Imaging and will qualify to sit for the Post-Primary Magnetic Resonance Imaging Certification examination and/or the Post-Primary Computed Tomography Certification Examination. Students may also opt to only complete the certificate for Computed Tomography Specialist or Magnetic Resonance Imaging Specialist. These are stand-alone certifications and will prepare registered technologists to be eligible to sit for the ARRT certification exams in either specialty. Graduates will qualify for positions at hospitals, medical offices, outpatient care centers, and medical and diagnostic laboratories, including diagnostic imaging centers.
The Radiologic Technology Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
