DEVELOPMENT @ THE ALBANY - MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD It’s now nine years since I joined the project to re-open what had been the well-loved College or Butts Theatre, saved by the farsighted actions of Coventry City Council, and seven years (on February 1st) since the doors of the newly named Albany Theatre were opened. It has been a mammoth project and a massive commitment from everybody who has contributed, from the hundreds of volunteers (including the Directors and Trustees) through to the paid staff we have been able to employ over the years. If you have been a patron for some time, you will have followed the many challenges the Albany has faced. There have been doubters, pitfalls and dangers. But, thanks to everyone’s hard work and dedication there have been magical, joyous moments - increasingly so in recent times and now is the time to stop talking about survival and to start talking about the very positive and bright future that lies ahead of us. The Trust has commissioned exciting development plans from the internationally renowned
Page 21
theatre design consultancy, Charcoalblue, and has now appointed its first salaried Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Kevin Shaw. Kevin’s previous role was as the CEO and Artistic Director of the Oldham Coliseum Theatre where over a long period he directed over 70 plays and co-wrote and directed 15 pantomimes. Kevin is well respected nationally and will bring strong, inspirational and highprofile leadership to the Albany. As soon as Kevin gets his feet under the table, we will be announcing our plans. We will need to raise some of the funds ourselves, so please do expect to hear appeals for donations from our growing numbers of patrons as well as from organisations and funding bodies. The plans are nothing if not ambitious. We’ve talked about it a lot, but finally this is it. The future of the Albany starts right now, and it is a very exciting prospect for the City and for you. David Meredith Chair, Albany Theatre Trust
