hen one asks Dr Rouach David about the essence of his collection, he immediately speaks about the men, mostly close friends, who contributed to the creation of this wonderful collection.

he first, and probably the most important man, is JeanMarie Cupillard.
ean-Marie Cupillard’s career as an art dealer began in Grenoble in 1968 at the Cupillard Gallery until 2008.
he exhibitions that Cupillard organized through his life, particularly focused on Arman, Zanetti, Dragic, Corneille, De Rougemont, Folon...
H
e shared his great passion for African art, and collecting African art became important of his art dealer activity.

r Rouach’s collection has been acquired in its integrality from the Cupillard Gallery, since 1990 until the early 2008, year of J. M. Cupillard’s death.

While its texture and resistance to cracking make elephant ivory the material of choice, the thighbones of hippopotamuses allow artists to achieve comparable effects. Bodily contact through wear alters the whiteness of the pendants. Although this effect is prized by western collectors, the ornament’s surface is scrubbed sans, which blurs the features over time.

Une Statuette “authetique” à la loupe
2 • La patine de cette œuvre épaisse et croûteuse est le fruit des multiples offrandes et fumigations. 3 • Le bois se trouve au niveau des 2 pieds amputés par l’action conjuguée des rongeurs ou des prélèvements rituels. 4 • Des traces de morsures sont observées car les onctions d’huile répétées attirent les rongeurs. 5 • On observe sur de nombreux endroits des petits trous occasionnés par les termites. 6 • Par endroits, le bois est éraclé et poreux, cela vient du fait de longs séjours dans des grottes ou des cavernes. 7 • Cette statuette a une facture antérieure à l’année 1970, et a appartenu à un collectionneur connu et clairement identifié.

1 • Cette statuette est l’archétype d’une statuette “authentique” cet objet a été acquis chez un galeriste spécialisé en art primitif qui en atteste de la provenance et de son authenticité. Cette œuvre est dite “authentique” car elle a été créée et utilisée par les populations Mambilla, qui occupent une région limitrophe du Nigeria et du Cameroun.
