Lantic Sugar Plant Tour By Lorne Prins, ABC Vice President & Treasurer
2021 offered no shortage of challenges for beekeepers across the province. Following a long, hot, dry summer, many producers also experienced significant delays in bulk sugar syrup deliveries required for fall feeding.
surge in demand was not able to be met in either production or transportation of the product. In order to relieve the strain on the system, beekeepers need to be able receive their fall sugar deliveries earlier, to spread out the demand on both sugar production and transportation requirements. Bee Supplies sent out a notice to all beekeepers on February 25, 2022, that there will be a discount of $30/MT for sugar ordered between June 1 and July 31, 2022. Receiving the first loads of fall sugar in June and July would greatly reduce the pressure on the supply chain in the peak fall period.
In response to the concerns voiced by producers, BeeMaid Bee Supplies and Lantic hosted a meeting in Lethbridge on December 7, 2021. The intent of this meeting was to provide an opportunity for beekeepers to express concerns directly to the sugar supplier, and for the sugar supplier to share sugar market trends and production details with beekeepers. Chinook Carriers also participated, as they play a significant role in the timely delivery of sugar to the beekeeping industry.
To take advantage of these discounted sugar prices, producers may have to look into increasing their on-farm sugar storage. Effective on-farm storage solutions are being investigated by the Commission, and hopefully more information can be provided to beekeepers in the coming months.
The Lantic plant has a standard output of processed sugar per month. They set these production targets based on sales projections that they determine in early spring each year. Production capacity of the Lantic plant is struggling to meet the sucrose volume demands our industry requires mid-August through September, as well as having the ability to maintain ample inventory to meet the demand of other accounts. Alberta beekeepers required a total of 8,800 Metric Tons (MT) of sugar during the months of August and September 2021, and that
Apimondia Congress 2022 By Jeff Pettis, Apimondia President, March 7, 2022 The Executive Board of Apimondia voted unanimously this week to cancel the Apimondia Congress planned for September 2022 in Ufa Russia. We condemn the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Please know that we heard all your voices during these trying days. Early Spring Nutrition Emily Olson, Technician, Alberta Tech Transfer Program as humans, which for bees are strictly obtained from pollen. These amino acids (protein) are essential for brood rearing as nurse bees derive all the necessary nutrients for the developing larvae from pollen. Pollen also provides the bees with minerals, lipids, vitamins, and micronutrients, important for hormone and pheromone production, gland secretions, and brood rearing. A diversity of pollen is essential for bee nutrition as each have different micronutrients, critical for honey bees’ ability to fight diseases and detoxify pesticides. Water is used to regulate the temperature within the hive and is mixed into brood food. An accessible water source is especially important in the spring as brood rearing is increasing and so are the number of hot summer days when the colony needs to be cooled.
F
rom late fall to spring, honey bees rely upon the food stores available in the hive. If adequately prepared for winter, the colony will be given the best chance at surviving the cold winter months. Once spring arrives, the colony is already in full brood rearing mode, building up the population for the coming nectar flows. During these early months, natural pollen and nectar sources are limited or unavailable and honey bees require a steady protein source in order to rear brood. Many beekeepers feed their bees supplemental pollen at this time until flowers begin to bloom. It is important to feed colonies early so they have the necessary nutrients to prepare for a busy summer.
Importance of Pollen in the Spring
Bee Nutrition Bees require carbohydrates, amino acid, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and water to carry out the necessary functions for colony survival. Carbohydrates provide the bees with their main energy source, which is derived from sugar (nectar). Bees convert carbohydrates into glucose and is used to power flight muscles, maintain temperatures within the colony, and can be converted to body fats which are especially important for winter survival. Bees require the same set of amino acids
Brood rearing starts mid-winter and building up the population is critical for the upcoming summer. Pollen stores are important going into winter so that brood rearing can begin before we can open the hives and feed. Once the weather permits, typically in March, supplemental pollen can help facilitate brood rearing when natural sources are unavailable. Weather is often unpredictable in Alberta, especially in the springtime. There can be cold snaps in the late spring after a bout of warm weather. As a result of bad weather there may be fewer foraging flights, poor forage availability, reduced pollen consumption, and cannibalism of brood. In the absence of pollen, the queen will continue to lay. Whether workers care for the brood is dependent on the pollen availability. Feeding supplemental pollen ensures that the colony can continue rearing brood during bad weather or until natural sources are ready. 4

The amount of pollen a colony receives is correlated to the population size and ensuring adequate food in spring could have lasting benefits throughout the year. Artificial pollen will aid in the buildup of the population in the spring, but a diverse natural supply of pollen is critical for long term success of the colony. Poor nutrition has negative impacts on bee health, causing them to be more susceptible to diseases. A bee’s immune system is the first line of defense in fighting diseases which requires specific nutrients to function. Studies have shown that a diverse pollen supply improves a bee's
immune system and reduces mortality. Nutritional stress also accelerates the transition from the nurse to forager life stages. Younger bees that become foragers are often less efficient at collecting resources and there is a decreased likelihood that they will successfully return to the colony. This further exacerbates the nutritional problems within the hive. Ensuring colonies have enough food in the spring and placing them in a location where there are plenty of diverse resources will help the colony thrive throughout the summer as well as increase productivity and the longevity of the colony. The Tech Transfer Program is funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU CAN CHANGE ON YOUR FARM? By Jody Wacowich, Executive Director, AgSafe Alberta common type of farm injury and comes with information about the risks in each area. As well it has recommendations to keep people safe on your farm.
We often hear people say after an incident, “I wish I would have
”
done this one thing differently that day.
We also know that approximately 18 people are killed on farms in Alberta each year. 59% are the operator or their children.
Recently AgSafe Alberta launched a program to help farms get started with safety on their operations using the FARMERS CARE life saving opportunities as its base. This program features practical and simple ways to help farmers and ranchers seamlessly integrate safety into their day-to-day lives. It is also available online so that it can be completed by the farm when it works for them.
Did you know that your industry had has seen an increase of disabling injury claims each of the last three years? We know that when asked many farms could identify an area where safety could be improved.
“We are so pleased to make this first-of-its-kind safety program available to farmers and ranchers,” said AgSafe Alberta chair Erna Ference, from her farm near Black Diamond, AB. “We wanted FARMERS CARE to be a simple way to get a safety journey started, while still having a major impact on the way we think about hazards on the farm.”
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR FARM SAFER TODAY? In 2020 AgSafe Alberta developed the FARMERS CARE Life Saving Opportunities. Each letter in the acronym stands for a
The program features four levels for farms to progress through. Level 1 begins with identifying that one thing that can be done today to start making a change towards safety. Levels 2-4 are in development but will add on some additional pieces aimed at reducing the risk of harm to your people and keeping your farm sustainable for the next generation. Upon completion of Level 1 farms can order a FARMERS CARE farm sign to show their commitment to safety, as they complete each level they will receive a sticker acknowledging their accomplishment. This program will benefit both family farms and farms with employees*. We think that this program will create some great discussions about safety on your farm team. You can get started today before the busy spring season arrives. AgSafe Alberta also continues to offer our advisor program, and our 1-833-9AGSAFE (924-7233) hotline in case you have questions or need support with an incident. You will find more information about FARMERS CARE on our website at www.agsafeab.ca
What one thing will you change today? (*Note: completing Farmers Care does not provide the due diligence that may be required by OHS in the case of an incident on your farm. Please reach out to AgSafe Alberta at info@ agsafeab.ca to find out how to further develop your safety program).

Honey authenticity: The opacity of analytical reports Part 1: Defining the problem
Walker, M.J., Cowen, S., Gray, K. et al. Honey authenticity: the opacity of analytical reports - part 1 defining the problem. npj Sci Food 6, 11 (2022).
https://doi.org/10.1038/s41538-022-00126-6 View the full Part 1 here: https://rdcu.be/cJzBE Abstract The composition of honey, a complex natural product, challenges analytical methods attempting to determine its authenticity particularly in the face of sophisticated adulteration. Of the advanced analytical techniques available, only isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is generally accepted for its reproducibility and ability to detect certain added sugars, with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) being subject to stakeholder differences of opinion. Herein, recent reviews of honey adulteration and the techniques to detect it are summarised in the light of which analytical reports are examined that underpinned a media article in late 2020 alleging foreign sugars in UK retailers’ own brand honeys. The requirement for multiple analytical techniques leads to complex reports from which it is difficult to draw an overarching and unequivocal authenticity opinion. Thus arose two questions. (1) Is it acceptable to report an adverse interpretation without exhibiting all the supporting data? (2) How may a valid overarching authenticity opinion be derived from a large partially conflicting dataset?
Part 2: Forensic evaluative reporting as a potential solution

Abstract The analytical techniques applied to verify honey authenticity are multifaceted and often result in complex data rich certificates of analysis that are open to interpretation and may be opaque to stakeholders without specialist knowledge. In these cases, the drawing of an independent overarching opinion is challenging. Two questions arise: (Q1) Is it acceptable to report interpretation, particularly if it is adverse, without exhibiting the supporting data? (Q2) How may a valid overarching opinion on authenticity be derived from a large, partially conflicting, dataset? To Q1, it is demonstrated that full disclosure of the data used in interpretation is mandatory. To Q2 it is proposed, with worked examples, to adopt ‘evaluative reporting’; a formalised likelihood ratio thought process used in forensic science for evaluation of findings and their strength assessment. In the absence of consensus on techniques for honey authenticity adoption of reporting conventions will allow objective assessments of reports, with equity to all and provide a better basis to identify and address fraud. 7

Recipe of the Month Easter Dessert: Lighter Lemon Walnut No Bake Cheesecakes
Recipe courtesy of Show me the Yummy:
INSTRUCTIONS
https://showmetheyummy.com/lighter-lemonwalnut-no-bake-cheesecakes-recipe/#recipe
Walnut Date Crust:
A naturally sweetened walnut date crust topped with a creamy coconut yogurt, cream cheese, honey, & lemon filling!
1. Line 18 muffin tin slots (you'll need 2 (12 slot) non stick muff tins) with paper cupcake liners. Set aside. 2. Place dates, California Walnuts, coconut, lemon zest, and salt into your food processor. 3. Process until well combined and the mixture sticks together easily. 4. Evenly scoop the mixture into the prepared slots. 5. Use your fingers - or the bottom of a small shot glass - to gently press the mixture down to form an even crust.
INGREDIENTS
6. Place in freezer for 15 minutes while you prepare the filling.
Walnut Date Crust: • 1 (8 oz) package dates pits removed, about 2 cups • 2 cups California Walnuts • 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut • zest of 1 lemon • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Lighter No Bake Cheesecake Filling: 1. Place softened cream cheese, coconut yogurt, and honey into a bowl. 2. Using your hand mixer, beat until well combined and fluffy.
Lighter No Bake Cheesecake Filling: • 2 (8 oz) packages full fat cream cheese room temperature • 2 (8 oz) containers full fat coconut yogurt room temperature • 1/4 cup honey • 1/4 cup lemon juice room temperature • zest of 2 lemons
3. Add in lemon juice and zest and beat, again, until well combined. 4. Scoop the mixture evenly onto the prepared crusts. 5. Place in the freezer for 1 hour, or until the mixture has firmed up. 6. Remove from freezer and let soften (timing depends on how soft you want these, about 10-30 minutes). If you leave them in the freezer longer, they’ll require more time to soften (about an hour at room temperature)
Optional Garnishes: • Whipped cream • Drizzle of honey • Berries
7. Serve with optional garnishes and enjoy!
10
8. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for a softer cheesecake or in the freezer for a firmer cheesecake (and again, let come to room temperature slightly).
