In

retrospect, I can say that

Architecture and Design are not only rooted in my heritage, but have also shaped the person I have become. From my early years living in Aruba, I remember helping my mother with her watercolor drawings. As I grew older and started studying, I helped out my father with commercial and residential buildings. I moved to The Netherlands when I was seventeen to commence my study. During my time at the TU Delft, I oftentimes combined Academic with Practical work, varying from workshops in foreign countries to construction work in the Caribbean. My first building was a historic mudhouse baptized by fire. Nevertheless, the building indicates a continuous desire to maintain heritage, while also being able to reinterpret it respectfully. After I started my Master’s degree, I took a year off to work for a leading Dominican Architecture and Urbanism firm. During this period I was awarded many responsibilities for the design of a luxury market hall. I was tasked with creating variations for the concept, the roof and structure,

the main facade, and the floor plans. I partook in meetings with the client, the municipality and communicated directly with the designated engineers to make the design buildable. My Academic work has been a reflection of my proficiencies and my position as a young Architect. In my portfolio I have therefore highlighted some projects where detailing was essential, others where I used parametric tools, a masterclass for urban development, and two workshops. My position as an architect is illustrated best through my graduation project, an Explore lab studio tutored by The Why Factory staff. In short, I believe that an Architect is the ‘chief builder’, which requires us to think holistically about the building process, to look at the present but design for the future, to be aware of the economical cost but also the value and thereby building sustainably. After my graduation in 2021, I briefly worked for a Development company in Rotterdam and afterwards did several projects in the Dominican Republic.

Contrasting section Historic building in Rhino Intervention in Archicad

link: Conservation Theory Papers

Redesigned student project to showcase my Archicad skills. The site is located in the harbor of Rotterdam. The conservation theory was highly influenced by Cronocaus and Preservation theory. The design focussed on hightlighting the iconic structure which is unique to the historic identity of the monument. The wooden structure centred between the two facades creates a vertical path to further expand the build volume of the monument.

Situated in the largest developing area of Santo Domingo, the district: Este is ripe for commercial investment. The site is located on the fringes of a residential area and is surrounded by motel parks. Because of the unique location of the site, the irregular plot and its fringe surroundings we were asked to explore several alternatives. The emphasis of the project is to visualize certain business cases and their respected parking necessities.

Santo Domingo 2022

This open plan building has had several lives before it was placed in our hands (became part of Brubur’s portfolio). The commercial building is located in a middle class neighbourhood which is growing rapidly and contains building of mixed use. After completion there were several interested parties, however we opted for a medical clinic as this would have a positive effect on the neighbourhood.

Historic Reconstruction Reconstruction of a historic mudhouse through the restoration and adaption of traditional materials.

Koningstraat 29, Aruba 2014

Although the existing building was already abandoned, the ‘cas di torto’ was being occupaid.

The Koningstraat was my first design and construction project. During this project I formulated the vision for the project, held discussions with the contractor and client about the budget and the construction method. This historic Aruban house had been abandoned and lit on fire after it was purchased. The cleaning up was done with a social association and the ‘Cas di Torto’ was done using traditional methods.

Manufactured Paradise Worlds first refinery reclamation, showcasing sustainable alternatives.

The floating pedestrian bridge symbolises how the proposal embraces the cultural identity and respects nature.

San Nicolas 2021

My graduation project was an attempt to trigger change on my hometown of Aruba. The refinery which is oftentime underestimated has an incredible history. At its peak it one of the

worlds largest and played a vital role in the jet fuel provision of the Allied forces. Today the refinery has been abandoned My proposal seeks to provide an alternative source of income while becoming a test case for the reclamation of the carbon infrastructure. Portfolio Albert Burgers

1933 - 1985 After the foundations was layed in the early years, Standard Oil of New Jersey would become the driving force behind the refinery. The ‘Aruban Giant’ did not only manufacture a modern Aruban Identity. The aruban refinery was also a vital gateway for jet fuel for the Allied forces during the WWII.
