Interested in the different possibilities of architecture, dealing with themes that constantly switch between different scales: from design to architecture, city and landscape, and their interrelationship. Supporting an open and interdisciplinary approach, in which the project is a process that from reading the complexities of the territories, the dynamics of anthropic and natural transformation, may provide possible interpretations and responses.

The new building is part of the development for the new eco-district of Clichy-Batignolles, in Paris. The continuity with the Martin Luther King park is obtained throug the opening of the building plot and the separation of the two vertical elements, allowing the park to enter the garden and climb on the terraces. The building is structured with a common socle of variable height hosting public uses (daycare, medical center, shops) and two housing towers, with 93 private apartments and 67 protected. The two towers are intended at the same time as twin elements but different, with shifting volumes moving at different rythms. The two facades estabilish a specific relation with the park, one with a system of mobile reflecting panels, the other through the framing of the views. The building respects the best parameters of energetic efficiency and sustainability, both architectural and urban. The competition proposal received the first prize, followed by the design and construction, completed in 2015.

The project is part of the development scenario for an alternative and sustainable tourism in Bibione. The deisgn focus is a housing building used as rural guesthouse, located on the border between fields, pine forest and the Adriatic Sea. The building is an aggregation of housing modules of different typologies, and commom areas for the guests and the local cultural events. The use of prefabricated wood panels and slabs, is based on a modular system that uses sustainable materials with a low environmental impact and a possible recycle and reuse. The foundations on prebuilt pillars reduces the necessity of excavations and keep the groundfloor ventilated. A facade system composed by glass walls and loggias, filters the relation with the sorrounding landscape, behaving as a bioclimatic regulator through brise soleils and mobile ventilation openings. The design proposal offers an easy to build and economic solution, with a flexible modularity and an high energetic efficiency. detail cross section

The building is a support facility for the agricoltural activity, used as storage for vehicules and equipments. It is located in ‘Val di Non’ valley, famous for the apple production, on a sloping terrain sorrounded by orchards, forests and mountains. The design aims to reduce the visual impact of the building and enhance its integratation in the landscape. The single pitch roof is tilted following the slope and reduces the vertical height of the facacde, supported by the new topography and terrain modulation. The facade walls in fair-concrete, together with the laminated timber roof and the larch wood cladding create a dialogue with the rural constructions typical of the sorroundings, with a contemporary design.

The renovation of this historical building aims at the re-organization of the house in more independent apartments, of different dimensions and features. The ground floor hosts the garden and the working and storage spaces, while on the first floor the housing unit extends its living room with a new volume over the existing terrace. Two smaller apartments for rent occupy the second floor, while the owner’s apartment on the third floor develops on different levels, taking advantage of the roof height. The roof replacement allows new windows opening in the facade and the extension of the living area with an open-air terrace, through a cut in the roof with sliding windows. This new design provides a new bright and open space, but maintains unaltered the historical image and volume of the building. the extended volume with terrace

The re-organization of the apartment clearly divides the day and night areas, through the entrance area and the central distribution system. The separation is obtained with a central partition with full-height sliding doors, serving both as wardrobe on the entrance side and as shelf and bookcase for the living area. All the furniture is built with custom-made wood elements. The main room has private bathroom and wardrobe, while the day-area is a big continuous space shared by the living room and the kitchen, overlooking the garden and extending with long balconies on two sides. section AA

The architectural solutions aim to highlight the spatial qualities of this attic space, taking advantage of the natural light and the roof height. This conditions allow new openings with balconies and a hanging mezzanine as private space for relax. The night-area with private bathroom and spa on the rear side leaves a wide open space for the living area, extending on the open-air terrace with kitchen overlooking the lake. Wood has a leading role, both in the structural system with laminated timber and on the floor and furniture, with different essences and colors. The design managed to create a contemporary but personal and warm living space, in constant relation with its rural sorroundings, the forest and the orchards and the precious view on the lake and the mountains in the background. living room, kitchen and mezzanine

The project consists in the rearrangement of the office spaces of a small bank agency. The concept is to have an autonomous element inside the existing volume, structurally and technically independent. A system of wood panels allows an easy montage and different modulable configurations, but also provides a new and recognizable image of the bank’s brand in its different agencies. The entrance area is located near the big windows with views to the city and natural lighting, hosting the reception and waiting area. The private office area is designed with partitions made of wooden slats and glass panels, recalling both the natural elements and the building tradition of this alpine region and its mountain landscape.

topic : PUBLIC SPACE size : 9,100 SQM year : 2014 site : BERLIN \ DE with : MANMADELAND

The Märkisches Viertel is a neighbourhood in the periphery of Berlin, result of a 60’s urban planning, that experienced many transformations over the years, without any overall concept and coordinated planning. The project for the new public space aims to rebuild a spatial continuum that could connect all the elements that stratified in time , standing on the main square, like the cultural center, the school and its sport facilities, the commercial activities. A new homogeneous paving covers the entire area, as a coherent connective fabric, while the insertion of green islands helps to structure the space and the pedestrian flow. Other interventions are made to restore the existing paving in basalt lava tiles, to improve the accesibility and to design new street furniture and lighting. The new square will then start again to be the center of the neighbourhood, the daily meeting place for the community and its social and cultural activities. siteplan

site : JENA \ DE with : MANMADELAND

The city of Jena fascinates for its urban specificity, result of its topographic condition and its 600 years history. The Erns-Abbe square is still connoted from the former Zeiss factory, working as a little self-sufficient world, even if at the moment it seems to have lost its center. The square is an enclosed space, where the proposal introduces a landscape topic rising from the geographic context and the sorrounding natural features, creating a new identity and charismatic character. The creation of three artificial hills over the underground parking permits the planting of new trees, implementing the space quality thanks to the color and microclimatic regulation. These topographies estabilish new relations inside the plaza, structuring the space for a clear orientation, freedom of movement and easy accessibility. Facing the entrances of the auditorium and canteen, the hills are cut by a long sitting element, organizing microspaces for meeting and waiting. The paving in granite cobblestones with different grey tones is continuous and omnidirectional, allowing the free modulation of the topography and adaptation to the facades, offering the users an elegant and comfortable walking ground.

type : COMPETITION topic : PUBLIC SPACE size : 21,600 SQM year : 2014 site : BERLIN \ DE with : MANMADELAND

This former railyard area is located north to the actual central station, in a strategical position for the contemporary urban development of Berlin. The recent demolitions left a large empty space: a huge and homogeneous flooring made in the typical berliner cobblestone. The idea is to keep unaltered the connecting property of this carpet that could at the same time be a legacy of the past and a contemporary element of identity: a coherent ground for the interrelation between the new buildings. In a sustainable perspective, most of the existing cobblestones are reused, modified and re-composed. A refined and precise transformation of the stone elements, through the variation of the processing and finishing, modifies the surface and color allowing to redraw this connecting fabric. A new gradient of elements is therefore generated, both old and new, mineral and vegetal. This new layout organizes the spaces for the vehicular and pedestrian circulation, the building’s entrances and the common spaces, equipped with new furniture elements, green areas and trees. siteplan

the lower plaza and the water feature

The city of Jena rises between limestone hills, chestnut forests and the river Saale, developing structural relations with its sorrounding landscape context. Geography and topography are the main themes for the design of the new square, which represents the connecting element between the historical facades of Johannisstrasse, the shopping center with the Zeiss tower and the upcoming residential development. The project overtakes the existing height difference with an integrated system of stairs and ramps, accessing the lower square from the main street and ensuring a continuous visual and pedestrian connection. The square is organized in two separated spaces: the lower plaza as an open and flexible functional space; the urban staircase as a system of sittings and platforms to stay and play, under the shadow of the new chestnut trees. The proposed solutions manage to transform the previuous adverse situation in a new space with multiple benefits, from the overall urban circulation to the creation of a new center for the life of the local community. siteplan

The site is intended as a new unique urban plot, a shared continuous concrete surface as common platform that organizes the different elements and their interrelation in use, space and time. A grid of points is derived from the hockey rink geometry, and further developed into a pattern of painted circles, which variation in dimension and density organizes the main crossing flows and the areas of activity. The pattern of circles becomes a geometrical and technical infrastructure to organize the square equipment, where the bidimensional painted graphic finds its 3rd dimension into the development of all the design elements such as lighting, mobiliar and green features. The mobiliar design follows the idea of the “collection, where different sized and shaped elements are the sitting objects and the water features, as well as temporary objects such as pools, stages and pavillons. A green connection between Beethovenplatz and Stadtpark is implemented through integrated green spots with different plants varieties and trees to provide shaded and relaxed microsituations. The new plaza is a representative urban space, where the fixed elements guarantee the necessary infrastructure and at the same time a high flexible and attractive space for different uses and configurations during the year.

The new square of this little town is organized in two levels: the superior is an extension of the main street and a balcony overlooking the town, served by a pavillon for infopoint and cafe, as well as a small pocket garden with birch trees. The lower part hosts a covered parking and a service space to provide technical support to the local associations that are organizing activities and events for the town over the year. An urban staircase assures the direct connection between the two levels, and in the lower level becomes a terraced area on the square, with platforms to sit or play. areas and uses

The project wants to restore this public space and to give back to the square a scenery flat that was essential for its genesis: the ancient walls of the ‘Castello del Buonconsiglio’. The main focus are the green features, to ideally connect the noble gardens guarded inside the walls to the new square. The green strip between the road and the square is remodeled to visually reconnect to the green basement of the the walls. This new topography higlights the walls scenery, organizing the ramp to access the castle across the street, the sitting elements on the lower level and a grass tribune on its slope. The square area is kept as free as possible, as an open urban device to be interpreted, able to create sinergies with the local community, promote new events and collective participation to the city life. The historical pre-existing traces lightly organize the space in three different areas: the old stables, the ramp accessing the castle and the new parking. A water feature recalls the memory of the ancient riverbed and actualizes the ancient relation of the city with water, becoming a playful element for the citizens and visitors.

The new Nordpark is the concept idea for the restoration of the former military area of Bayernkaserne: a new open system of green spaces. The Central Park as its center, while the Infinity Park designs the perimeter of the new district and borders it with sport features and community gardens. Both are connected through the Acquatic Park, with its central water basin and crossing canal. The Northpark is used for recreation, supplying the neighbourhood with fresh air, reducing the heating and providing acoustic insulation against the sorrounding road network and industrial areas. The pedestrian and bike paths go through a continuous sequence of different public spaces, from the small square to the commercial street; from the forest to the beach. Ten neighbourhoods unwind along the main loop, accepting different characters and typologies, from the tower to the countryhouse. This creates a new residential and commerciale district socially mixed, a high quality of life and ecological sustainability, becoming a new attraction for the actual and future inhabitants of Munich.

24 Haus B22

The project for the gardens of the new B22 residential building has developed through a participative process, involving the group of the 25 inhabitants, each with different ideas and needs. Both private and collective demands had to be fulfilled, in order to integrate the design of the private gardens and common spaces. A system of hedges divides the private terraces with garden from the common garden, that is organized with vegetation islands with shrubs, perennials, grasses and fruit trees. The idea is to have an open space with a wild character, to be discovered and crossed, a place to meet and share the common activities such as games, barbecue and gardening. A full immersion in the nature that continues over the property fence, in the neighbouting park, from which only the view of the iconic tv-tower remember us to be in Berlin.

The focus of this project for the open spaces of a new residential building is to highlight the importance of the vegetal elements and the in-between spaces of the house, both common and private. The groundfloor hosts the private gardens and the shared garden, immersed in lush vegetation, equipped with sauna and pool. On the roof terrace, bordering the private wooden platforms, a path in black stones moves through green islands planted with a different mix of the typical vegetation of the Nordic countries. Every apartment is provided with a winter garden - loggia, each one with a specific plant mix representing the different climatic zones of the world and the richness of its vegetal biodiverstity. detail - section LOGGIA

GRUNDSTÜCKSGRENZE

Charlie Living is part of a new ensemble of buildings that will repair a gap at Checkpoint Charlie, in central Berlin. This apartment block takes a different approach to conventional courtyards and creates a public green central space that branches off the public urban areas. The project aims to architectonically translate the concept of Wadi, a canyon with a temporary water flow, generically present in desertic regions, characterized by a lush vegetation. The concrete path system bridges over the green, contrasting with the soft green topographies structuring the courtyard. A water line flows through the courtyard, shaping itself in different forms, from fountain to basin, canal, waterfall. Beside the central public space, different thematic courtyards, from skatepark to magical garden and playground. The 80% of the surface is permeable and designed with green islands, providing a fresh environment and offering a clear orientation and a dynamic walking experience, as well as preserving free access for emergency vehicules. The vegetation follows a gradient with an exotic character and a typical woodland structure, with grasses, shrubs, trees. The private terraces on the groundfloor and the planted balconies, together with the green roofs, are reinforcing the unique and lush character of the courtyard, a new hybrid “garden city” in the heart of Berlin.

topic : ROOFSCAPE \ PARK size : 28,60 HA year : 2013 site : HILLERØD \ DK with : MANMADELAND + BIG

Like a medieval castle in the open field, the new Hillerød Hospital is embedded in one of the few danish forests and a landscape of soft hills and small ponds. The adjacent forest is seamlessly continued into the hospitals open spaces, where it gets organized and planted in a grid, gradually fading out in density to blend into the farm land. Over 1000 newly planted trees of indigenous danish species create a critical mass dealing with the massive buildings volumes and the site scale. The smooth topography echoes the surroundings and create visual connections, ensuring an easy way-finding through the site, and reducing the visual impact of the large parking areas. A system of ponds is implemented for the storm water management, and contributes to the recreational environment for the hospital park. The roofscape suggests a dialectical relation between the building volumetry and the Danish coastal landscape, representing the complexity and quality of the regional landscape. Each roof is treated separately but equally, with a gradient of plants, colors and heights, that helps the transition between the different roofs. A path system is oscillating through the dunal vegetation landscape and creating micro situations for patients, visitors and staff. The courtyards are independent from the surrounding environment and each one formulates its own world and references.

site : NEUENBURG \ DE with : MANMADELAND

In 2022 the new Rheinpark will connect again the city of Neuenburg with the river Rhine. Five layers are set up to deal with the landscape gradient of transition between river and city, from the riparian wood to the urban park. The result is a free spatial sequence with an increasing gradient of cultivation and intensity of use: from the riparian park, to the open field and the productive park dedicated to fruit plantation. The fourth section of the park is the long topographical element integrating with the highway, working as noise and pollution barrier. The last section of the park is the connection with the city, through the new urban park around the Wuhrloch pond, with the new beach, cafè and playground areas. Inspired to the fluvial morphology and the system of flows and meanders, the project designs a new system of paths parallel to the river, bordering the five thematic areas of the park. This system assigns to the landscape a new readability, facilitating the orientation and movement in the nature. All the park layers meet up in the large promenade, directly connecting the city with the river.

topic : MASTERPLAN \ PARK size : 46 HA year : 2013 site : MANNHEIM \ DE with : MANMADELAND + KERE’

The reconversion of the dismantled military area into a new productive district focuses on its green core, a new public park for the recreational and sport activities of the city of Mannheim. A green pedestrian bridge over the highway estabilishes a continuity of landscape between the forest and the city. A main infrastructure along the park perimeter ensures a fast north-south connection for pedestrians and bikes, and the connection with the regional bikeway network. A system of secondary loops offers a slower and widespread circulation, accessing the different functional areas of the park. The park program is distributed along the main paths, offering rest areas, playgrounds, skatepark and parcour, climbing facilities. The topographical variations offer a more dyamic experience of the park, organizing also a bmx circuit and a large open air amphitheater. The new trees have a linear distribution along the perimeter, filtering the presence of the neighbouring productive activities, while in the central area they are isolated or organized in groups, to create shadowed microsituations. The south-west area integrates an existing biotope where a system of elevated wooden paths ensures the sightseeing and preserves the existing ecosystem.

An alternative touristic model, able to recognize and enhance local peculiarities, could begin a process of sustainable development setting a new socio-economical balance between inhabitants and tourists. The project organizes a series of functional and spatial devices for the direct interaction of local and temporary user, to change the actual dyamics of distance and seasonality. The implementation of the existing path network, allows to go through particular environmental, cultural and recreational values. The bikeways are on a raised embankment for a continuous flow and better perception of the landscape complexity. The structural parceling and the grazing activities are recovered with the installation of new facilities reinterpreting the archetype of the local dry stone wall. These small hybrid structures mix the local productive activities with touristic functions like small shelters, selling spaces, warehouses. As an interpretation of the historical centre of Alcalà, in constant dialogue with the existing topography, the project designs two housing typologies: one in continuity with the urban fabric and a second redeveloping the ‘terrace wall’ element. The wall element becomes facade, and the roof a public terrace for a shared use between residents and tourists, as a public space with gardens, market, playground, camping. These proposals develop new relations between inhabitants, seasonal workers and tourists, and integrate small facilities and shops to support the village re-urbanization.

The project proposes a new urban ecosystem that creates diversity, with an ecological and cultural richness able to develop an alternative touristic scenario to the actual beach-focused porposal. A pilot project that empowers the transversal axis strategically connecting the rural part of Palma to the sea. The project develops as a landscape narration revealing the possible potentials along the gradient of urban spaces running from the coast to the interior of the island. The regeneration of the urban fabric improves the environmental and socio-economical status of the city. New specific microclimates are created to improve the urban biodiversity, thanks to the pine forest park, green islands and facades with mediterranean vegetation. The improved walkability creates a ‘garden street’ where socialization, resting and events happen in a single shared space, improving the relations between local and temporary actors. By re-thining and re-building the existing urban context, a mixed and dynamic program is offered to promote the social and cultural activities all over the year, breaking the monofunctionality and seasonality. The implementation of green roofs and solar panels improves the energetic eficiency and helps to reduce the local ecological footprint. The intervention introduces a 30% more of permeable surfaces; the planting of new trees and a dynamic textile urban canopy creates fresh and shadowed areas that improves the bioclimatic comfort of the public space, offering a new vision for the contemporary mediterranean streetscape.
