Clé de A future icon takes its place among the classic timepiece collections
Cartier has a proven track record when it comes to designing watches that achieve iconic status. From the Tank and the Santos, both introduced in the early 1900s, to the Ballon Bleu and Calibre de Cartier, introduced only a few years ago, the company’s designs are recognized worldwide as treasured icons or modern classics. They are preferred by celebrities and royalty, but also by aficionados with a taste for fine craftsmanship.

The Clé de Cartier is available in several sizes and is suitable for both men and women.
When Cartier introduces a new collection, as it did earlier this year at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, it is big news in the watch world. The new Clé de Cartier is a full collection that is perfectly suited for both men and women, which is a hallmark of Cartier timepieces. The Clé de Cartier looks perfect on a woman’s wrist in smaller sizes or dressed with diamonds and is equally appropriate on men (or women) in larger sizes. The Clé de Cartier is distinctive for its shaped case: a circle within an elegantly curved oval.

The watch retains all the codes of Cartier, including railroad-style chapter ring, Roman numerals, and the flinqué engraved inner dial. The crown is designed to resemble a key, hence the name (clé is French for key). To wind and set the watch, it is first turned, as you would turn a key. Its sizeable dimensions and elongated shape make the crown easy to handle. It is adorned with a sapphire that is not set in the classic manner, but inserted flush with the metal surrounding it. Cartier developed a new movement for the Clé: the automatic Caliber 1847 MC, with a dual-direction winding system, a date indicator at 6 o’clock, and a 42-hour power reserve. The numeral “1847” refers to the year of the Maison’s creation. The watch is available in 18k rose or white gold, with a pavé version and a diamond bezel option. It is available in 31 mm, 35 mm, and 40 mm sizes.

The Miracle of Pearls “My dream is to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls.” KOKICHI MIKIMOTO, FOUNDER
Kokichi Mikimoto made his dream of adorning women with pearls come true in 1893. After years of hard work
and experimentation, he cultured the world’s first semi-spherical cultured pearl, the first pearl ever grown by man, cultivated by harnessing natural processes. Kokichi followed up in 1905 with another major achievement, cultivating the world’s first perfectly spherical cultured pearl, and would later also perfect the culturing of black South Sea pearls. Mikimoto’s groundbreaking technique made this coveted gem accessible to women everywhere, carving an everlasting niche in the world of jewelry.
In 1899, the first Mikimoto pearl store was opened in Tokyo’s chic Ginza shopping district, followed soon after by
store openings in London, New York, Paris, and Beverly Hills.
By 1907, the company was also making jewelry in its own workshops, using the techniques of European goldsmiths.
Today, Mikimoto is not only the world’s foremost producer of cultured pearls, but also a world leader in the design of exceptional jewelry. Mikimoto creations range from traditional fine pearl strands to innovative jewelry that combines pearls with other gemstones in modern designs. Whether it’s the timeless elegance of exceptional pearl strands or designs that represent up-to-the-minute contemporary styles, the quality of the workmanship in Mikimoto jewelry is second to none. Each beautiful piece reflects supreme dedication, passion and care. Amazingly, only the top 5% of all the cultured pearls in the world meet the Mikimoto standards of quality. As Mikimoto says: “To wear Mikimoto is to reflect the purity of the ocean, the mystery of creation, and to know you are adorned with the finest cultured pearls in the world.”
This year, Mikimoto is introducing a bespoke program
called “M Customization.” Clients will have an opportunity to collaborate with Mikimoto artisans to create one-of-a-kind pieces featuring Mikimoto cultured pearls. Clients can also choose from some of the world’s finest gemstones, sourced by a team of dedicated procurement specialists. The end result is jewelry that possesses a unique character while retaining Mikimoto’s signature sensibilities of timelessness and elegance. We are proud to carry an extensive selection of Mikimoto’s products and also to offer customers the opportunity to take part in the “M Customization” program. Our boutique incorporates a special space of honor for the display of Mikimoto’s earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces incorporating Akoya, as well as natural black, white, golden, multi-color or baroque South Sea cultured pearls.

The Omega
Seamaster is
Omega’s New
the timepiece of
choice for James
Bond, and the latest
edition is cued to the
upcoming film, SPECTRE.
The best thing about the release of a new James Bond film is the imminent release of a new Omega James Bond timepiece. For more than two decades, Agent 007 has preferred some version of the Omega Seamaster, custom made for him by Omega. The Omega James Bond watch franchise began with GoldenEye in 1995 — concurrent with the revival of mechanical watchmaking. It was specially equipped with a laser beam that allowed Pierce Brosnan to cut through a metal sidecar, freeing him from a train where he was being held captive.

double omega Daniel Craig as James Bond favors an Omega Seamaster timepiece.
Seven films later, the Omega Seamaster has built a reputation as the Bond watch of choice — and a collectors’ favorite. (NB: Rolex has appeared in nine James Bond films, so there is a record to beat). To commemorate the upcoming film, SPECTRE (the 24th in the James Bond series), Omega is launching a limited-edition Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M. The oscillating weight of the movement is shaped like a gun barrel, and the dial is decorated with a pattern that repeats a Bond family coat of arms. The coat of arms is also found near the tip of the yellow central seconds hand. The Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M James Bond watch is simply a really great every-day watch. The blue dial is de rigueur in terms of trends, and the steel case and bracelet are solid. It contains an elite movement, the Master Co-Axial Caliber 8507, which is resistant to magnetic fields greater than 15,007 gauss — normally it’s 15,000, but 007 is a reference to Bond. Also, it is a limited edition of 15,007 pieces. Collectors take note: A few years ago, Antiquorum sold two original Omega watches worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale — a Seamaster sold for $49,500, and a Planet Ocean, for $177,140. Another collector nabbed a Seamaster worn by Pierce Brosnan in Tomorrow Never Dies for $57,680.
The limited-edition Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra commemorates the upcoming new Bond film, Spectre, starring Daniel Craig.

Signature Scintillation
David Yurman’s Albion collection brings out the beauty of unique gemstones
The Albion, first introduced in 1994, is one of David Yurman’s most recognizable designs. Albion is a celebration of the beauty of cushion-shaped gemstones with the signature checkerboard faceting that creates a greater play of color and light. Now, David Yurman unveils a refined new iteration of the Albion, with softer, more sensual edges and a setting that holds the stone closer to the skin. The colored gemstones are backed with sterling silver for enhanced brilliance, and diamonds are set in a mosaic pattern, creating a scintillating sparkle. David Yurman’s wife, Sybil, once told him she wanted a bracelet that told time. This was the starting point for a timepiece collection that combines signature David Yurman design elements with exceptional technology and craftsmanship. Now, playing on the new look of the Albion Collection, David Yurman is introducing a watch that truly combines timekeeping with jewelry. The watch dial is square with rounded corners, taking its inspiration from the collection’s recognizable cushion-shaped gemstones. The linked bracelet makes the design perfect for pairing with a stack of David Yurman bracelets. David Yurman, one of America’s leading jewelry designers, has become an icon of American style. A former sculptor, David began to design jewelry more than 30 years ago, developing his passion into a global business. His signature pieces have become legends in jewelry design.

Bold gold jewelry is making a glittering comeback, with modern designs and an anything-goes attitude
is trending
Gold is back! The preferred metal of the disco era in all its glittering glory is back in style, particularly in shades of yellow. Designs are more modern, and in some cases more subdued, than they were in the 1980s, of course, with fewer high-polished surfaces and a greater concentration on hand-finishing. The newest way to wear gold is to don multiple pieces at once, mixing sizes, styles, colors, and textures for a look that is as individual as you are. It’s all about mixing, matching, and layering. From several dainty chains to one bold piece of yellow gold jewelry, anything goes. Here are five looks in gold jewelry that are trending right now.

Soft yellow gold is the ultimate feminine jewelry statement, classic and timeless. It works with vintage styles and dresses, which is important for bridal wear, because vintage-themed weddings are in style right now. Yellow gold can be more subtle than other gold colors, and it is also more natural — gold comes out of the ground in a yellow color. Given a high polish, it is at its most glittering. Gold is set to dominate the red carpet this fall.

Stacks and layers
The hottest look in jewelry right now is to stack multiple rings or bangles or layers of necklaces. Layering gold pieces in a variety of textures, finishes, colors, sizes, and gemstone accents is a great way to create a look that is a true expression of individual style. The same pieces can be used to change your look on a daily basis, depending on what you’re wearing. This is your chance to be creative and go from bling to delicate or anywhere in between.

Links
Large-linked gold bracelets and necklaces are part of the comeback to big looks in gold. Links are one of the most versatile elements in jewelry, because they can be made in so many different sizes, shapes, and finishes. There is a trend toward square, rectangular, and irregular-shaped links. Hand finishing is important because links are larger, and a bit of texture offers an alternative to a high polish, which is very bold. Fortunately, the bigger sized links also leave lots of room for setting diamond accents.

Mixed colors
The three most common colors of gold — white, rose, and yellow — are all equally popular right now. You probably already have jewelry and watches in your wardrobe in all three colors, and now it’s acceptable to wear them together. This year, designers are including all three colors in the same pieces or in one collection, with designs that are meant to be mixed together in stacks or layers.

Pantone’s Fall Palette Samuel Sylvio 18k White Gold 4.74cttw Rainbow Sapphire and 3.52cttw Diamond Necklace. $15,749 b y
Every fashion conversation begins with color. Color excites, ignites, and stimulates the senses, creating endless possibilities for a woman to reinvent her wardrobe. Color defines the mood and attitude of each season, and the fashion faithful follow Pantone for cues, heralded on the runways of leading designers who show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. Pantone is a powerful tool for communicating color, and styling with accessories is a powerful way to update a wardrobe. Luckily, gems provide a spectrum of choices to complement Pantone’s picks, particularly those that come in many colors, such as diamond, sapphire, tourmaline, beryl, topaz, spinel, garnet, and quartz. For fall 2015, Pantone’s palette is rooted in androgynous hues and earthy neutrals with bold color statements that reflect a landscape of hope, fun, and all things natural, says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “The palette is not pastel or bright heavy; it’s comfortable, more balanced, not so abstract. You can see a certain amount of poise and confidence from these colors.” Designers pay homage to progressive moments in American history, from the seductive 1920s to the bohemian hippie/modernists of the 1960s, stringing together colors and styles that are easy to wear.
Hot Hues
Top hues in the palette: Desert Sage (cool greenish-gray), Stormy Weather (powerful blue-gray), Dried Herb (organic, aromatic of earthy fragrances), Oak Buff (mellow golden-yellow), Biscay Bay (tropical teal), Reflecting Pond (cooling anchor blue), Cadmium Orange (warm peachy hue), Cashmere Rose (soft pink), Amethyst Orchid (creamy, dreamy purple), and Marsala (earthy wine red).

Marsala, the Color of the Year for 2015, has become a great go-to-hue, a highly varietal shade that combines dramatically with neutrals, including warmer taupes and grays, says Eiseman. “Because of its burnished undertones, it’s also highly compatible with amber, umber, and golden yellows, greens (in both turquoise and teal), and blues in the more vibrant range.” You can find shades of Marsala in tourmaline, topaz, garnet, spinel, and pearls. Also, gems in fresh, fruity reds that lean toward raspberry or strawberry are key in this color range. The tonal aspect of using the many shades of pink and red gems creates a soft but important statement. Amethyst Orchid, Eiseman believes, will be a fall favorite: “Intriguing, vibrant, and sensual, this enigmatic shade is an extraordinary hue that is unique, bold, creative, and exciting.” Designers are combining this hue with colors like Stormy Weather or Cadmium Orange, or Oak Buff and either Desert Sage or Cashmere Rose. Gems that reflect Amethyst Orchid include amethyst, purple sapphire, tanzanite, tourmaline, lavender jade, and kunzite. Blues and greens remain popular, with turquoise important for the season. Turquoise is always great for summer, but more and more it’s a gem that transcends seasons. Many designers are exploring a range of semi-precious gems to translate popular colors in fashion designs. Fashion’s big ’70s push is inspiring the use of turquoise and other hard stones in bold looks. Trending are gem cabochons, bigger pieces in milky cabs, faceted and flat, for rings, earrings, and pendants with either a simple prong setting or framed in a halo of gems.

Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Open Home Time Montblanc’s Nicolas Rieussec chronographs not only pay homage to a famous name in watchmaking, they also highlight Rieussec’s decisive element: rotating disks for the elapsed seconds and minutes under fixed hands. On the Nicolas Rieussec Open Hometime, the off-center subdial for the ordinary time has circular apertures on its hour-scale, behind which a partly skeletonized twelve-hour disk rotates to show the hour in a second time zone. Here too, the display relies on Rieussec’s principle of a rotating disk rather than a hand: this complex interplay of three rotating disks is an interesting technical solution that gives the watch unmistakable aesthetics and uses the dial as an integral part of the movement.
Vintage Watches One of the most interesting trends in luxury watchmaking today is the combination of classic, traditional styling with state-of-the-art mechanical movements. Thus, the elite Swiss brands honor their heritage while continuing to build on the classic concepts of mechanical watchmaking. Here are some of our current models that reflect the style and heritage of traditional watchmaking, using calibers that represent the modern standard.
Rotonde de Cartier Watch Large Date, Retrograde Second Time Zone, and Day/Night Indicator 42 mm, 18K pink gold, leather The Rotonde de Cartier watch showcases the most sophisticated movements in Fine Watchmaking: a central chronograph, flying tourbillon, and astrorégulateur.
Rotonde de Cartier Annual Calendar Watch 40 mm, 18K white gold, leather Imbued with the spirit of a Creator of Fine Watchmaking, the Cartier Manufacture never stops reinventing the traditional functions. This has been confirmed once again in the design of the 9908 MC Annual Calendar movement. This caliber has been entirely conceived and produced by Cartier development teams in order to incorporate the most important operating characteristics of an annual calendar: readability and functionality.

The lady’s every-day watch should be rugged enough for the gym and sophisticated enough for the evening
Every woman’s watch wardrobe should contain at least one classic timepiece, a go-to watch that can be worn every day, with any outfit. Our expectations for a classic day watch demand that it do double duty, taking us into the evening as well. Diamond accents, mother-of-pearl dials, and bracelets (instead of straps) make today’s classic watches versatile and wearable around the clock. Diamonds on an
everyday watch should be positioned as accents only — markers on the dial or set around the bezel, rather than as full pavé, as in a jewelry watch. The classic day watch should also be of the highest quality, sturdy enough to take daily wear and to remain scratch-free and fully functional for most occasions. Each of the classic watches we feature here is made in Switzerland and represents the highest quality in timepiece manufacturing.

“Inspiration
is one of my favorite words.
It usually
comes to me in different ways from my travels, from my own culture and from my curiosity. I pay attention to all fashion shows and the way women dress in different countries. I pay attention to arts and to nature and the animal world. I am always very attentive to understanding what is missing in the market and moving my creativity towards that but always following the fashion world. During 2014 and this year, the custumers were looking for innovative total gold look collections with a fresh style and an antique soul. This has been my mood of inspiration for many of the most important current collections like Pois Moi, Golden Gate, Princess and New Barocco. They are all extremely modern in design but with a retro touch in the overall look.”

YOUNG and ADORNED JEWELRY DESIGN COURTS A NEW
Tacori Island Rains East-West Oval Gem Ring. $390
GENERATION OF ENTHUSIASTS.
Jewelry brands have recently started catering to a younger demographic with hip, scaled-down jewelry collections that are more accessible and more eclectic than their regular fare. The designs are aimed at a modern generation that may be wearing jeans or simpler dresses to work. Designers are drawing on hipster elements— mixing metals, using nontraditional gems such as champagne diamonds and moonstones or incorporating boho elements such as feathers. The casualization of dressing for work has inspired jewelry designers to experiment with new looks and new materials. Designer Emily Armenta, for example, mixes oxidized sterling silver and 18k gold and has had success with items such as her horizontal black diamond bar necklace. White and champagne diamonds and white sapphires decorate an open feather wing necklace, and a bone feather charm is set with white and champagne diamonds. Stephen Webster, the British designer who introduced a rock ‘n‘ roll aesthetic into higher end jewelry, offers soft
chain bracelets and bangles, and nature-inspired earrings shaped as branches. The delicate, easy pieces allow for layering, a way of dressing that has come into fashion in recent seasons. Understanding the style and budget of her peers may be one reason Ivanka Trump’s jewelry collection also resonates with these shoppers. Her Les Petites range features whimsical pieces such as purse, lock, and shoe charms, as well as initial charms. All styles are available in 18k rose, white, and yellow gold. The pieces are perfect for shoppers just starting to build their jewelry collections. Indeed, starting one’s own collection is something more and more women are doing as they come of age. A 2012 Mintel study showed that more than 50 percent of 2,000 women interviewed purchased jewelry for themselves. It may have been De Beers who started the trend, with its campaign for the right-hand ring (“left hand is we, right hand is me”), kickstarting the belief that buying for oneself signifies independence and power. Perhaps no brand is better poised to understand this potential than David Yurman. Having long marketed to young women of style, the company recently celebrated a 30-year anniversary with its collectible cable bracelets. Since the launch of its pavé and signet pinky rings and its Starburst collection, a whole new demographic has flocked to the label. As with the other designers catering to young millennials, the company has endeared itself to a new generation of shoppers. At a recent flagship store opening, model Selita Ebanks, DJ Mia Moretti, and Christina Hendricks of Mad Men fame could all be seen enthusiastically shopping. Piaget, a luxury jeweler established in 1874, is likewise catering to the young and hip. At a recent garden luncheon in New York City, a bevy of young celebrities — including TV personality Alexa Chung, DJs Alexandra Richards and Harley Viera-Newton, and model Hanneli Mustaparta — played with delicate bangles and Possession rings while chatting about travel plans. In creating pieces with petite diamonds and starting the pricing at just under $2,000, the brand has managed to find a new kind of success among youthful influencers.

don’t lose that How to Care for Your Diamond Ring
Over the course of time, your diamond can be dulled by exposure to everyday substances. To prevent this, don’t allow the buildup to become too severe. When cleaning your diamond ring, avoid chemicals or harmful solutions, as they can damage the metals and weaken the structure of your ring. Use warm, soapy water with liquid soap. For a more intense clean, find a soft toothbrush, or a child’s toothbrush, and gently work around Christopher Designs 14k White Gold Ring with 4.18ct Round Center Diamond, surrounded by 1.51cttw Side Diamonds. $54,900
the stone and setting. Don’t be too rough with the cleaning, and dry with a lint-free cloth. For special occasions you can have your diamond ring professionally cleaned for that added glint.
W
While diamonds are the hardest of gemstones, they are not indestructible and still require care. Engagement and wedding
rings are most vulnerable to being lost or damaged because of their daily use. Though the diamond is lauded as being hardy, this can make people less careful with their diamond rings even when they are often the pieces of jewelry with the most sentimental value and are, therefore, the most precious. The upkeep of your diamond ring will help ensure its value and integrity are preserved.
Keep your diamond ring shiny with regular cleaning. 46

Over time, your diamond ring will be bumped, smacked and hit in your everyday movements. Though your ring should be able to withstand most of those sorts of experiences, you should schedule regular checkups with your jeweler. Prongs are especially vulnerable, and when they become loose, you are in

danger of losing your stone. At your checkup, the jeweler can ascertain the strength of the setting and tighten it up for better security when necessary. This is a highly advised preventative measure to keep your diamond ring intact.
If you keep it clean, secure, and insured, your ring will sparkle for a lifetime and last for generations.

rings can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Don’t wait for that to happen before you realize how valuable jewelry insurance can be. Buying insurance for your diamond ring can be easy and straightforward. Don’t assume that your general insurance covers your ring adequately. Look into your policy and seriously consider a separate policy for your precious jewelry. Accidents happen, but they don’t need to set you back financially. Caring for your diamond ring requires attention and thoughtfulness. If you keep it clean, secure,

While the princess cut diamond reigns supreme, the cushion cut diamond is quick to follow along with vintage cut and fancy colored diamonds this year. 200-year-old London-based auction house Bonham’s has proclaimed 2015 as the “year of colored gemstones.” The recent fall runways highlighted the key trends set to inspire fine diamond jewelry collections. Raid the family jewels or invest in pear-cut diamonds, super-sized stone drop earrings, brooches, and dress rings to channel the new antique trend. Colored diamonds are now in demand. Just ask pop star Nicki Minaj and others who have recently sported yellow, blue, and pink diamond rings.

While a strand of pearls might seem mundane when it comes to haute couture fashion, fall’s runway shows in Milan made it clear the new trend is a classy option. We give a nod to the past while embracing the future. Designers including Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Thom Browne demonstrated pearls don’t always have to mean precious. Stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Sarah Jessica Parker prove how the jewelry stalwart can look fresh, sophisticated, and modern. Pearls have been translated into double rings, double-sided earrings, and the funky yet chic choker necklaces using double stranded pearls. Layer them as you see fit!

From Roman seal rings to the jewels of the Maharaji, men’s jewelry was the original form of adornment As men’s jewelry becomes more mainstream, there is a wider selection of styles to choose from, made from a greater selection and mix of materials. Pendants, rings, and cuff links are all growing in popularity, but the strongest trend in men’s jewelry is bracelets. The trend is being driven partly by celebrities, including Prince Harry of Britain, whose penchant for wearing stacks of beaded and leather bracelets on his wrist is well documented. Bracelets are being worn on either side of the watch, or mixed together on the nonwatch wrist. Stacking a few together is a strong trend, mixing leather, beaded, metal, and wrap bracelets together. The look is no longer just for casual wear but is acceptable in the boardroom.

jewelry, men prefer solid mineralized stones, such as onyx, bloodstone, lapis lazuli, jade, black diamonds, brown diamonds, labradorite, and even ceramic. Metals are hammered, woven, twisted, engraved, and blackened, for a more industrial-chic look, which differentiates it from the high polish of many women’s pieces. Motifs include eagles, hawks, dragons, lions, owls — creatures of myth and masculinity. Just as women’s jewelry conveys a message of style and tasteful accessorizing, men’s jewelry is a talismanic expression of identity, a display of power as much as personal style. On the cuff The most longstanding and prolific item of masculine adornment is the cufflink. As a functional item, the first cufflinks appeared in the 1600s but became widespread only at the end of the eighteenth century following the evolution of men’s shirts. At that time, cuffs were secured using ribbons, and these were slowly replaced by pairs of buttons. The modern cufflink was born in the mid-nineteenth century, with men in the middle and upper classes using them to attach their highly starched shirt cuffs. The 1960s trendy London scene brought a new male fashion awareness, exemplified by the Carnaby Street dandies, among them Mick Jagger, and cufflinks became a creative part of masculine outfits. But, alas, the simpler fashions of the later Woodstock generation caused the near disappearance of the cufflink. In the 1990s, they made a comeback, and this renaissance continues today. Although functional, cufflinks now express the personality of the wearer and exude elegance and refinement. These minor works of art may range from whimsical to solemn, from simple to elaborate, from inexpensive to luxurious.

Love Letters mini monogram pendant necklaces in sterling silver with colorless diamonds and an 18k gold tag, by Tacori.
Diamonds are showing up on the beach, by the pool, on safari…in the carpool line, in the kitchen, out with the girls, and out with the love of your life. Diamonds are for every day living.
Reminiscent of dew drops, engraved with wave-like detailing with Tacori milgrain on the edge of each. The easy to wear bracelet also features one stand out dome with pavé set diamonds.
Beyond romantic symbolism, there is a reason most women wear jewelry aside from their diamond engagement rings every day: diamonds are beautiful! They symbolize natural beauty, value, and significance, and despite some outdated opinions on etiquette, they can be worn every day. “Half a century ago, diamonds were considered appropriate only for engagement rings or for special occasions, but now they are considered essential wear with more casual forms of fashion,” observes Michael O’Connor, of Style & Substance in New York City. O’Connor is a stylist who dresses stars in red carpetappropriate jewelry for awards shows but also for everyday life.

Diamonds are certainly durable enough to be worn every day. Diamond is the hardest gemstone on earth. It rates 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which means it is much harder than any other gem. “The durability of diamonds allows us to wear them on a daily basis, whether it is in a ring, pendant, or earrings,” says Mark Mann, global director of jewelry manufacturing arts for the Gemological Institute of America. The idea of wearing diamonds every day has evolved alongside the trend toward affordable fashions that are inspired by couture designs. It has cued jewelry designers to follow suit by creating more casual diamond looks. Fashion stylist Monica Cotto in New York City has worked with brands and magazines for 20 years and has witnessed this evolution. “I save big statement pieces for evening, but I have no problem pairing fashion-forward styles that are thinner and smaller, like stacks of diamond bangles, with a great blouse,” she says. One of the few neutral gems, the colorless diamond has earned the status as the go-to, go-with-anything accessory. Casual luxury is the new norm in fashion, and diamonds are an easy choice to add a bit of sparkle to our daily lives. Young, inventive designers have largely spearheaded the fashion-forward diamond jewelry category. The looks are often made with smaller stones that cost less and are sometimes set into silver or 14k gold,

casual sophistication making the styles inherently more casual, affordable, and ideal for gifting. Plus, the designs are quite chic — think ear climbers. “Designers are making more casual pieces like lightening bolt diamond earrings that are playful and fun,” adds Cotto. Diamonds also effortlessly punch up outfits, and diamond earrings draw the eye to the face where you want the eyes to fall. Diamonds have the versatility to accessorize anything from T-shirts to cocktail dresses, business suits to bikinis. Although they are hard, diamonds can chip, break, or fall out of mountings if jewelry prongs become loose. Remove diamond jewelry when performing manual labor or participating in sports, and don’t subject jewelry to cleaning solutions or chlorinated water. For everyday jewelry, you might consider pieces with diamonds set in bezel or channel settings that offer protection by way of metal sides and low-profile settings. The positioning of earrings and necklaces — away from potential contact — automatically means that those diamond pieces are out of harm’s way. Also consider platinum settings, which offer the most security because platinum is such a strong metal.
“I wear a diamond ring every day,” says O’Connor. “My diamond is in a bezel setting because I am worried about the edges, and it is set into platinum because it’s extremely durable.” Among the leading jewelry must-haves: diamond stud and hoop earrings; diamond solitaire and pendant necklaces; and diamond bangle bracelets and stackable bands.

Consider enhancing the design with layers of meaning by adding children’s birthstones, specialized filigree metalwork, inscriptions to the band or three-stone “past, present, and future” symbolism. The trend for stackable bands is a wonderful way to upgrade existing jewelry and at the same time, to build on the story of you and your partner’s lives together. Adding bands for special anniversaries and life events creates new wedding ring ensembles. Many women also upgrade by adding color to their rings, with fancy color diamonds a favorite choice, as well as color in metals like rose or yellow gold. Just as when you picked out your original wedding rings together, it might be fun to make the choice to upgrade together — including a new ring for the groom — reliving the original moment of commitment. If you do choose to buy a new ring, take care to preserve the

How to pick the wedding ring that’s right for you
When it comes to wedding rings, men now have an array of choices and styles that rival the options that women enjoy for engagement rings. This can make choosing the band more complicated.

Do you go with a traditional gold band? Do you want a more masculine style? Is platinum the “in” metal? Will a titanium band give you the sportier look you want? Should your ring have a bit of sparkle in it? What will a ring with combined metals look like? Never fear. We will arm you with the information you need and guide you in the process of selecting a ring that you can cherish for a lifetime. Start by choosing a metal. Gold is the traditional material for wedding bands. This symbolic metal is available primarily in yellow, white, and rose, although other colors such as blackened and brown gold can be found. Gold can be finished in a variety of ways — from polished to matte. Since it is a softer metal, it can be scratched or dented, but it can easily be re-polished to its original shimmering glory. Platinum has also become a popular choice for wedding bands. It is one of the most durable and expensive of the precious metals, with a beautiful grayish-white luster. Platinum is heavier and stronger than gold, due to the density of the metal. It is also hypoallergenic — some people develop allergies from the alloys used in other metal bands. Palladium, part of the platinum group of metals, shares many of platinum’s attributes, such as its white color, strength, and durability. Since it is not quite as rare as platinum, and also not as dense, this metal

is lighter and more affordable, and therefore a great choice for a wedding band. Like platinum, palladium is hypoallergenic. Titanium is extremely lightweight and very strong — three times stronger than steel — so it will last a lifetime. Titanium bands are highly resistant to bending and denting, but because titanium rings are so strong, resizing or changing them can be difficult. Titanium is hypoallergenic, very affordable, and comes in a variety of colors, including white, gray, black, purple, blue, and more. Tungsten Carbide wedding bands are usually dark slate gray or black in color. This metal is quite dense, which makes the rings feel similar in weight to other traditional metals. It is affordable, durable, and extremely scratch resistant, but it can crack or shatter if dropped or hit against a very hard surface, so it may not be the right choice for someone who works with his hands. Also important to consider, tungsten carbide rings cannot be resized. After deciding on the metal, you’ll need to think about a style. Classic weddings bands have made a comeback. According to Amanda Gizzi, of the Jewelry Information Center, the classic vintage style has regained popularity because this generation of grooms and brides has a strong connection to their grandparents. Traditional, understated rings are

usually classic yellow gold or platinum, and have clean, smooth lines, that can be flat or rounded. Additional designs on the band may include a small bit of milgrain work. Another development in men’s wedding band styles is getting two bands. Women traditionally have two rings — their engagement ring and their wedding band — and now men can too. Paul Tacorian, of Tacori, says, “Men appreciate versatility with their rings, just as much as they do in their watches. Gentlemen have a long tradition of owning a classic dress watch, as well as their sports watch, and with two wedding bands, they have the same option to match their jewelry with their activity.” Yet another trend is the masculine look of blackened or mixed metals in bands that are heavier and wider in size and feature textures and scrollwork. Many of these dark bands are made with titanium or tungsten, although blackened gold is also used. These darker bands feel

There is also a growing trend toward adding bling to the men’s wedding band. This look once appealed to a small group of men, but now, with the many available options, more men are considering adding gemstones. Ring stones include white, black, gray, or cognac diamonds, and even sapphires. They are usually flush-set on the band so they don’t get in the way. Designs span a range, from a single stone setting to a subtle row of diamonds on the edge of the ring, or having the entire band encrusted with stones. If you want some sparkle on your ring this might be the look for you.

sophisticated and sleek and give the groom a distinctive look. Regardless of the ring you ultimately select, you should think about ways to make your ring even more special and unique. Traditionally, the inside of your band is personalized with your initials or the date of your nuptials. Fingerprints of your other half can be etched on the inside, as could an engraving of your love’s heart beat, a phrase, a lyric, or a location, such as the coordinates of where you first met. The inside of the band could even be set with hidden diamonds or other meaningful gems. Be creative — these are the special things that made you fall in love. Your wedding ring is a reminder of your special day, as well as a symbol of your unending commitment to your partner. You will wear it for the rest of your life, so make sure you choose wisely. Picking the right ring will take some time and consideration on your part, but in the end, it will be well worth the effort.

Paraiba Tourmaline Rare and Record-Breaking
LeVian Couture 18k White Gold Ring with 2.29ct Paraiba Center Stone, surrounded by 1.53ct Diamonds. $39,999 Samuel Sylvio 18k White Gold Earrings with 28.40cttw Paraiba Tourmaline, .97ct Pink Tourmaline, and .86cttw Diamonds. $23,499
Whether you wear jewelry or collect it, Paraiba tourmaline is a top-drawer choice for a gemstone. Discovered in the 1980s by Heitor Dimas Barbosa, the stone hails from the Mina da Batalha in the Federated Brazilian State of Paraiba. Brazil is the classic country for tourmalines of all colors of the rainbow. What Makes Paraiba so Prized? The turquoise to green colors are exclusive to this small, rare, and precious gemstone. Paraiba tourmaline owes its splendid color to copper and magnesium. The interplay between these two elements gives rise to colors like emerald green, turquoise, sky and sapphire blue, indigo, bluish-violet, and purple. Higher concentrations of copper lead to blue, turquoise and green shades, while higher concentrations of manganese in the stone lead to violet tones. Paraiba tourmaline offers unrivaled color, brilliance, and luminosity. Their attractive hues have been termed neon, electric, and fluorescent, as well as unique and breathtaking. Radiant shades conjure up images of peacock feathers and tropical waters. This is a mineral that appears to glow from the inside out.

Exclusivity and Economics The Paraiba tourmaline made its first U.S. appearance in 1987. Its distinctive appearance made it immensely popular, and over the years it has come to command top prices. Its recognition and high esteem also resulted in the depletion of the mines in Brazil that produced the stone. Green-blue stones with the identical chemical composition of the original Paraiba tourmaline produced in the mountains of Mozambique and Nigeria are also expected to become obsolete. With one Paraiba tourmaline mined for every 10,000 diamonds, it’s not unusual for a beautiful gemstone with spirited colors to rival or exceed the price of a diamond. When shopping for this gem, one would choose color as a key factor, over both size and clarity. The Guinness World Records-holding Paraiba tourmaline, the Ethereal Carolina Divine Paraiba, set in an ocean-themed necklace, will reportedly be at auction this year. At 191.87 carats, with preauction valuations up to $125 million, all eyes will be on the one-of-akind piece that is sure to drive even more demand for this very scarce gem.
