welcome Happy holidays from all of us at Albert’s Diamond Jewelers! Each year we give thanks for the privilege of getting to live and work in such a wonderful community. We feel fortunate to be a part of your celebrations throughout the year — birthdays, anniversaries, job promotions, Mother’s & Father’s Days, weddings — the list goes on and on. We sincerely appreciate your business and hope that our love for what we do is visible to you every time you walk into our stores. Albert’s continues to give back through the many charitable contributions and acts of service we, and our family of employees, do. We remain especially dedicated to recognizing local area students and first responders for their achievements. Our biggest effort each year is our event to fund the research for a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. 2019 marked our 16th annual event, which was noted as the largest independent fundraising event in the entire country for the second year in a row. We are so grateful for everyone who partners with us on this event. Our ability to raise $355,000 this year is proof that every contribution makes a difference. As we approach the holiday season, we strive to create a shopping experience that allows those who visit Albert’s Diamond Jewelers to enter as customers, but leave as members of the Albert’s family. Year after year, we strive to stay ahead of the latest trends in jewelry designs and watch innovations and to fill our showcases with new and exciting options for you. Albert’s has been chosen by the most prestigious and respected brands in our industry, such as Cartier, David Yurman, Breitling, IWC, Roberto Coin, Mikimoto, John Hardy, and many more. Our diamond, jewelry, and watch selection is second to none! We will continue to stay true to our number one priority — providing the utmost attention and care to every customer we serve. Our family of jewelry experts is committed to sharing their knowledge, expertise, and guidance in offering each customer an exceptional value with unsurpassed quality. We hope to “See you at Albert’s” this holiday season! With gratitude, Fred & Donna Halpern, Josh & Ashley Halpern, and the entire Albert’s Family

Each student received a special Fossil watch and certificate, to acknowledge their outstanding achievement. Keep up the great work!

Albert’s is proud to declare this year’s MS Auction was our best ever! On October 6th, over 500 guests joined with Albert’s at the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority to raise over $350,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Bidders at the live and silent auctions had many different items to choose from, ranging from jewelry and art, to sporting event tickets and vacations, with 100% of the proceeds donated to finding a cure for MS. CELEBRATING

MILESTONES with Layers of Love

Join us as we celebrate big milestones here at Albert’s Diamond Jewelers. The ride sure has been sweet, and we’re ready to close out this decade by reflecting on someone near and dear to the heart of Albert’s. For 60 years, Fred Halpern and his family have been the proud owners of Albert’s Diamond Jewelers in East Chicago, IN. Fred turned 80 in August, and over the last six decades, he’s watched his small store front blossom into one of the largest jewelry stores in the country. With an unwavering commitment to providing a warm, friendly, and personal experience, the staff here at Albert’s reflects Fred’s positive mindset and dedication to giving you the best customer experience you can find. For Fred, jewelry store ownership goes beyond who walks through the front door. “It’s not about selling something. It’s about making a friend or building a relationship,” Fred says. “I make friends for life.” When you step inside our doors, you’ll feel an instant connection: Like you’re meant to be here. And, no customer is to feel left out or undervalued. You’ll find a wide variety of designers and watch brands for every price point or taste in style, as well as unmatched customer service. In 2010, Josh Halpern was named president of the company, and if you asked him to describe his father, he’d more than likely tell you that Fred has been a mentor to him and has always set a good example of what a leader should look like.“Working for and working with my father has been the greatest time of my life,” Josh says. The journey has been long and not always easy, but we’re glad you’re here to celebrate with us as we take a look at what makes Albert’s so special to us and to the community we serve.

LOOKING BACK Albert Rubinstein first opened the small jewelry store in 1905 on the corner of Main Street and Broadway in the Harbor neighborhood. With a diverse and hard-working community, the economic atmosphere of the steel mills lent a helping hand to the success of the Alberts, right up until Fred’s dad purchased it from a gentleman by the name of Bernie Davis in 1960. That year, the steel mills closed due to strikes and the surrounding community struggled. Most of the surrounding community that frequented with Albert’s either stopped coming in or moved elsewhere to find work. At 21-years-old and in the middle of a semester break from the University of Alabama, Fred found himself the owner of a bankrupt store with no inventory and no customers. The store did $27,000 his first year in business and Fred didn’t get paid. The following year Albert’s did just $36,000 in business, and Fred still didn’t collect a paycheck. In fact, Fred continued to live at home for the next five years, never taking a penny from the company for himself. There were times when he struggled to pay the bills that kept that small store running. He even had to ask his small staff to wait a couple of days to cash their paychecks. “I can’t tell you all the times I had to get on my hands and knees and beg the guy who was turning off my lights and my water,” Fred says. “And I said, ‘Please, I will pay you. Just give me another couple of days.’” Fred was determined to succeed. He got creative and decided that if he couldn’t compete with the other stores and their inventory, then he’d outhustle them by staying open later and focus on building relationships rather than making money. Eventually, the hard work paid off and Albert’s flourished. Josh remembers the old store well, recalling that the Main and Broadway store was full of characters and blue-collar folks; folks that came to love Fred and even followed his business when we opened our new flagship store in Schererville, IN, in 2002.

What started as a pass/fail college project for Josh soon turned

Donna continues to be the inspiration behind our goal to raise awareness and support. Before the disease prevented her from walking, Donna Halpern was heavily involved in Albert’s. Josh remembers her as the company’s bookkeeper when he first got into the business. He also remembers her taking pride in tidying up the store and making sure things were neat and clean…until she couldn’t. Eventually, the disease progressed, and Donna could no longer do the things she once did at the stores. “We have a family business, and we were all together and here, and then it was tough to see this beautiful woman who raised me and did everything for me be challenged and not be able to do the things she once could,” Josh says. Now, Fred and Donna enjoy most of their time together. Fred does most of the shopping, cooking, and cleaning and says he enjoys it. He credits her for raising both of their kids to be great people with great work ethics, and says she deserves to be labeled as a heroine. While he now does most of the housekeeping, Fred still credits others for lending a helping hand. “I’ve got a lot of great help,” Fred says. “But I find myself doing these things and I say, ‘you know how lucky I am to be able to do it?’” Donna continues to be the inspiration behind our goal to raise awareness and support for Indiana families that are challenged with the disease, as well as those around the world who need care. Just like Fred, everyone at Albert’s Jewelers feels very lucky to be able to bring awareness to this cause, and we are so very grateful for your generosity. Without our loyal customers, friends, families, community members, vendors, and silent supporters, we would not be well on our way to making the world free of MS.

Vibrant blues, a blush of pink, and the rosy glow of angelskin coral are infusing jewelry designs with new life Imagine a world without color — all black and white and no joie de vivre. Color adds life, drama, flair, and energy to our world, and it infuses jewelry with a special beauty. In a fashion world full of neutrals, little black dresses, and tone-on-tone ensembles, gemstone jewelry is not just an accessory, it is the magic finishing touch. This year, jewelry designers are mixing things up with an expanding palette of hues found in lesser known gems like kunzite, heliodor (green beryl), Tanzanite, topaz, spinel in pink, blue, and

Even elite designers known for their traditional emerald, sapphire, and ruby jewelry are exploring the beauty of more exotic (and in some cases, more accessible) gemstones, including rare specimens of cat’s eye moonstone, indicalite tourmaline, and Paraiba tourmaline. Coral is also picking up in popularity, since the Pantone Color Institute named Living Coral the 2019 color of the year. Yellow diamonds or a big ruby surrounded by diamonds are the perfect finishing touch, especially with a matching handbag or shoes. Whatever diamond jewelry you pick out for your big event, try to imagine wearing it with more than one outfit on different occasions. In other words, don’t wear something so specific that it isn’t also versatile. With big diamonds and statement jewelry, it is more than acceptable to wear them more than once — it could become your signature look. metals. Adding copper, for example, produces rose gold. Adding nickel or palladium creates white gold. Yellow gold is mixed with traces of nickel, copper, and zinc, mainly make it stronger and more suitable for wearable jewelry and watches, but also to make it slightly lighter and more subtle in color than pure gold. It renders the gold soft enough to engrave or create gems, yet hard enough to withstand the wear and tear of daily life — because jewelry is meant to be worn. The metal alloys are mixed to create a combination of gold and metals that results in 18 karat gold, compared to 24 karat. 18 karat is the industry standard.

Yellow gold is considered the ultimate feminine choice among gold colors. It also beautifully shows off any finishes on the surface, such as burnishing, engraving, beading, or sandblasting. Given a high polish, yellow gold is at its most glittering. A satin finish lends itself particularly well to yellow gold jewelry. It is also beautifully set off with colored gemstones, particularly greens, pinks, and yellows, as well as white diamonds. Best of all, yellow gold looks right at home with rose or white gold, so you can mix and match your gold jewelry.

This year’s gold jewelry trends include plenty of chain bracelets and necklaces, with unusually shaped links and lots of convertible pieces that can be worn several ways. It dovetails with the trend toward layering more than one bracelet or necklace together, using a variety of link sizes, shapes, finishes, and even gold colors. Some links are large and hollow and big enough to have pavé diamonds or gemstones set into them, another way of transforming an individual link into a decorative element. Gold bangles and cuffs are also part of the layering and stacking trend that is here to stay, and this year we are seeing bigger cuffs, often set with gemstones. There’s never been a better time to wear gold jewelry every day, thanks to the number of brands recognizing the need for casual luxe gold pieces that can be worn to the grocery store as easily as to a dinner date.

COLLECTING

PRE-OWNED ROLEX A PRIMER ON COLLECTING THE WORLD’S MOST COLLECTED WATCH

Rolex is the most collected watch in the world, and because the brand has produced so many timepieces for so long, the number of options and the subtle nuances within collections adds up to a vast universe of pre-owned models to choose from. Several books have been written about Rolex, including the highly regarded The Ultimate Rolex Daytona Book and Rolex Day-Date: Timeless Elegance by Pucci Papaleo, or the recently published The Watch Book: Rolex by journalist Gisbert Brunner. These and other experts can spot the subtle differences that separate every version of a model throughout its lifespan. When you consider that these distinctions exist for every model, some of which have been around since the 1940s, and that Rolex produces nearly a million watches a year, you get an idea of how complex it can be to collect Rolex timepieces. Essentially, the world of Rolex consists of a tight collection of very well-made models that have been around since the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s — Oyster Perpetual, Day-Date, Datejust, Daytona, Submariner, and Explorer — as well as newer models — Yachtmaster, Sea-Dweller, GMT-Master II, Sky-Dweller, and Explorer, for example. Within these collections, Rolex makes cases out of gold, steel, platinum, or two-tone, and offers five types of bracelets and a handful of bezel and dial variations, some with the iconic Rolex cyclops date window. Because of Rolex quality standards, considered the highest in the world of mass-produced watches, most pre-owned Rolexes are still in good condition. Any one that strikes your fancy is a good investment. The first rule in collecting Rolex is to learn some of the lingo. Here are a few terms, all of them coined by Rolex collectors, that will help you spot some of the special pieces. Starting in the 1980s, collectors started making up nicknames for certain vintage Rolex references, based on their features, as an easy way of describing and dating them. Here is a quick lesson on how to speak Rolex. Note: These are not official Rolex terms. Those

BOMBAY LUG: A stylized bracelet attachment found on some 1940s Oyster cases. BUBBLEBACK: Named for the convex shape of the caseback, produced from the 1930s to the 1950s. DOUBLE RED: Between 1971 and 1977, Rolex printed Sea-Dweller and Submariner 2000 in red on two lines on the dial of the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller. Today, only Sea-Dweller is printed in red.

OFFICIAL ROLEX TERMS: MATERIALS: OYSTERSTEEL: This is 904L grade steel, a superalloy used in the aerospace and chemical industries, and that means it has the corrosion resistance and high polish of precious metals. It also has a high sheen, so it looks good for a long time. EVEROSE GOLD 18K: By adding copper and silver to gold in a proprietary formula, Rolex achieves its uniquely warm rose gold. Rolex also uses its own formulas of 18k yellow and 18k white gold. PLATINUM: Rolex uses 950 platinum, exclusively (and sparingly), for special editions. 950 is a high-concentration alloy that includes ruthenium for strength and shine. ROLESOR: This is a name Rolex gives to its patented method of combining Oystersteel and gold in its two-tone models. the bezel, the winding crown, as well as the center bracelet links are made of 18k yellow or Everose gold, and the middle case and outer links of the bracelet are made of Oystersteel CERACHROM: Rolex’s proprietary ceramic is made inhouse. It is scratch-proof, impervious to UV rays (it doesn’t fade), and is now the high standard for bezel inserts on Rolex’s sport watches. CHROMALIGHT: Rolex’s luminescent material, which is blue by night, bright white by day, providing high visibility in dark environments.

JUBILEE BRACELET: The supple five-piece links on dressy watches and some sport watches, such as the GMT-Master II. It was originally designed for the Datejust in 1945. OYSTER BRACELET: The larger, flat three-piece links make for a simpler, sportier look. PRESIDENT BRACELET: The President uses semicircular three-piece links, originally created in 1956 for the Day-Date. It is always gold or platinum. PEARLMASTER BRACELET: The refined fivepiece links make the Pearlmaster Rolex’s most elegant bracelet, with a crownlock clasp only. OYSTERFLEX RUBBER BRACELET: Made of a very soft, flexible elastomer with an internal cushion system that makes it extremely well fitting and comfortable. The rubber is fitted over metal blades made of a titanium and nickel alloy, so you get the strength of metal and the comfort of rubber.

BEZELS: FLUTED PRECIOUS METAL BEZELS: Iconic and hard to miss, today’s fluted bezels are one of the great signature elements of Rolex timepieces. ENGRAVED FIXED BEZELS: Found on the Explorer II and the Daytona Cosmograph, demarcations are engraved into either Oystersteel, a precious metal, or Ceracrom. Since it was founded in 1847, Cartier has been inspired by the elegant, sinuous panther, using it as a motif in some of its most magnificent jewelry and jewelry watches, including pieces made for the Duchess of Windsor. The Breitling Aviator 8 Curtiss Warhawk Chronograph 43 mm.

WITH VINTAGE-STYLE BREITLING

In the 1930s and ’40s, Breitling was an important manufacturer of aircraft cockpit instrumentation, and subsequently became one of the leading producers of chronograph wristwatches designed for pilots. The name of the new Aviator 8 Curtiss Warhawk series is a tribute to that heritage. Aviator 8 is a nod to Breitling’s Huit Aviation Department, set up in 1938 to produce cockpit instruments. At the time, Huit (8 in French), referred to the eight-day power reserve of the on-board instrumentation. The three-piece Aviator 8 Curtiss Warhawk collection specifically

commemorates Breitling’s partnership with Curtiss Wright, the maker of the iconic P-40 Warhawk airplane, which it manufactured between 1938 and 1944. Two of the watches are chronographs, all with COSCcertified movements: one with the Breitling manufacture caliber 01 and the other with Breitling caliber 13. The third is a three-hand model with Breitling automatic caliber 17. All three have a military vibe, with matte green dials and straps and plenty of Super-LumiNova on the hands and numerals. All have date functions as well. The Aviator 8 B01 Chronograph 43 Curtiss Warhawk has silver subdials with 12-hour and 30-minute chronograph counters, along with a date and a small seconds subdial. It contains the COSC-certified Breitling caliber 01, with a 70hour power reserve. The 43 mm case is stainless steel. The second chronograph, Aviator 8 Chronograph 43 Curtiss Warhawk contains the Breitling caliber 13, also an automatic movement, with a 42-hour power reserve. Like the B01 version, it has a green dial with Super-LumiNova on the hands and numerals, but with a different arrangement of subdials and a day indicator, as well as date. The 43 mm case is stainless steel. The Aviator 8 Automatic 41 Curtiss Warhawk is a three-hand model with an COSC-certified automatic movement with a 40-hour power reserve. The 41 mm stainless steel case is DLC-coated.

Crafted in dark brown resin, the pen is fitted with a handcrafted 14k gold nib with rhodium coating, engraved with the little prince’s drawing of a sheep — a symbol of imagination in the story. The writing instrument’s cap is artfully adorned with a sentence from the book, while the platinum-coated clip features a yellow lacquered star reminiscent of the prince’s mystical guide.

The MEISTERSTÜCK SOLITAIRE GEOMETRIC DIMENSION is an uncommon juxtaposition of Montblanc’s classic aesthetic and its wellpracticed expertise in working with unique materials and designs. The ballpoint pen’s barrel is shiny black resin, complemented by an adjacent three-dimensional geometric pattern engraved in a sophisticated champagne gold tone. The pen features a champagne gold-coated clip discreetly embossed with the pen’s serial number. The distinguished Montblanc emblem in black and white is the pen’s crowning glory.

The Montblanc STARWALKER METAL fountain pen, part of the newly redesigned StarWalker collection, is inspired by space exploration and a renewed appreciation of our planet. The pen features a translucent patented dome that appears to glow an ethereal blue, like the cosmic view of earth emerging above the lunar horizon. The pen has a platinum-coated cap, barrel, and fittings, and its cool composure is interrupted only by the cerulean brilliance beneath the Montblanc emblem on the crown. HENRI DAUSSI — TRADITION OF

R E B E C C A

EXCELLENCE The Daussi cushion-cut diamond remains a favorite of many brides around the world, due to its exceptional beauty and distinguished characteristics. When a woman chooses to wear a Henri Daussi ring, she says to the world that she truly recognizes the luxury and quality of a fine piece of jewelry. The Daussi Cushion was conceived and executed by master diamond cutter Henri Daussi Loots over 60 years ago. Loots understood, even then, that people were interested in a bigger looking diamond without sacrificing any of its brilliance. The distinctive Daussi cushion is a proprietary cut that makes the stone appear to be 30 to 50 percent larger, without losing any of its brilliance or fire. The story of Henri Daussi Loots began when he was a boy in Antwerp, where he learned the craft of diamond cutting from his father. Living in the diamond capital of the world, Loots continued his artistry and was able to work on some of the most exceptional and significant stones of his time. His mastery in the field led him to create the first ever heart-shaped diamond, which became an international sensation and solidified his position as one of the premier diamond cutters in Europe. Creating the world’s most brilliant diamonds has become a family tradition. Jeff and Kristiaan Loots, Henri’s grandsons, continue his legacy by maintaining his high standards of excellence in craftsmanship and design. Henri Daussi is also a leader in sourcing its diamonds responsibly, from the ground through the finished piece. The quality and timelessness of a Henri Daussi piece will bring joy to one that wears it and will be treasured for generations to come.

DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RINGS TO MAKE YOU SPARKLE

Love is in the air. So what better time than today to start thinking about your engagement ring. A ring is not only a symbol of your love and commitment, but it also says so much about your style and personality. With so many options, it can be hard to whittle it down to just one ring that will be yours forever. If you’re having trouble deciding which to choose, perhaps these engagement ring trends can start you off on the right path. One dominant trend this year is the desire for simplicity, similar to the Meghan Markle effect on wedding gowns. More and more brides are opting for rings that are unadorned and delicate, featuring thinner bands and little to no diamond accents. The focus on this trend is the center stone rather than the setting. But if you need a little bit of sparkle, consider modest diamond details underneath your center stone for your own pleasure.

TODAY THERE ARE MORE STONE CUTS AVAILABLE THAN EVER BEFORE, AND BRIDES ARE USING THAT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. WOMEN WHO WANT A RING THAT IS ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF COUTURE SHOULD EXPLORE THESE TRENDS. While the halo has become a classic style of late, there are ways to keep it fresh. Adding colored stones, diamond baguettes, or a sculptural surround will elevate a halo design and is sure to impress. A two-stone toi et moi ring (French for “you and me”) represents each of you in your union and can be realized in diamonds or stones of your choice. And while the asymmetrical engagement ring may be unexpected, this unbalanced yet eye pleasing design can be a bold choice for the confident woman to wear with delight. Remember, the engagement ring is only the first step on this long and magical journey. Find exactly what feels right and take it. Your ring represents your love and commitment, so don’t be afraid to show the world who you are inside.

shapes from which you may choose.

ROUND The round diamond is the most popular diamond shape, representing approximately 75 percent of all diamonds sold. Due to the mechanics of its shape, the round diamond is generally superior to fancy shapes at the proper reflection of light, maximizing potential brightness. OVAL Because the oval diamond is a modified brilliant shape (like virtually all round diamonds), it possess a fire and brilliance similar to round diamonds. PRINCESS The princess diamond is the most popular fancy diamond shape, especially for engagement rings. Like round diamonds, princess diamonds are a good choice for their flexibility in working in almost any style of ring. EMERALD The unique look of the emerald diamond is due to the step cuts of its pavilion and its large, open table. Instead of the sparkle of a brilliant, emerald diamonds produce a hall-of-mirrors effect, with the interplay of light and dark planes.

MARQUISE The marquise diamond is a football-shaped, modified brilliant shape. Carat for carat, the marquise diamond has one of the largest surface areas of any diamond shape, making it a good choice when trying to maximize perceived size. PEAR The modified brilliant pear-shaped diamond is a combination of a round and a marquise shape, with a tapered point on one end. CUSHION The cushion shape diamond combines a square shape with rounded corners. This classic shape has been around for almost 200 years, and for the first century of its existence was the most popular diamond shape. Refinements in cut
