Ir a la Universidad Quizás uno de los momentos más excitantes para los jóvenes es el ir a la universidad, pero asimismo está lleno de muchas dudas, incertidumbres y angustias. Durante casi cinco años de publicaciones, hemos procurado ser un facilitador para ayudar a nuestros lectores a estar informado de las múltiples opciones que tienen para estudiar y donde. Igualmente hemos tratado de indicarles los requisitos a cumplir, fechas de los exámenes a tomar, con quien asesorarse para aplicar, y apoyarlos informado donde buscar asistencia financiera. Esta revista está dedicada especialmente a este tema, en especial para personas de habla hispana, y en tal sentido destacamos el esfuerzo que Mi Gente Mi Escuela está desarrollando en el Condado de Broward. Going to College Perhaps one of the most exciting moments for young people is going to college, but also is filled with many doubts, uncertainties and anxieties. For nearly five years of publications, we have tried to be a facilitator to help our readers to be informed of the many options we have to study and where. We have also tried to indicate the requirements to fulfill, dates of exams to take, with whom get advice to apply, and giving support to informe where to seek financial assistance. Prepárate para el SAT

Debes comenzar a prepararte para la universidad al momento de entrar al noveno grado ya que con una planificación adecuada de los cursos que vas a tomar cada año, materias AP y demás actividades extracurriculares podrás garantizarte la aceptación en la universidad. El SAT y el ACT debes presentarlos empezando el décimo primer grado, para tener la oportunidad de repetirlos varias veces durante ese año, en caso de requerir subir la puntuación. Muchos estudiantes piensan que al tener un GPA alto no necesitan una buena puntuación en estos exámenes, solo para enfrentarse tardíamente a la realidad de no ser aceptados en la universidad de su preferencia por no tener la puntuación exigida. Hoy día existen distintas opciones para hacer más accesible el pago de la universidad o college así como diferentes tipos de ayudas financieras y planes de ahorro. High School to University If you’re a high school student looking at ways to make the transition to college easier, International College Counselors offers a few resolutions that can help.

1. Commit to getting good grades. For the majority of students, good grades are entirely neces-

sary to get into a good school. In the best-case scenario, a student maintains good grades throughout his or her high school career. 2. Stop procrastinating. Stop underestimating how much time it will take to get something done. When procrastination leads to four college essays on top of schoolwork, all due tomorrow, usually, this doesn’t turn out so well. 3. Don’t do it all. It’s better to concentrate on a few things and excel in them than join every sport, activity and club that can be crammed into a schedule.. Schools are looking for commitment that shows willingness to stick with something and make the most of it. 4. Keep a calendar. Deadlines creep up quickly and the closer the date, the higher the pressure. If a deadline is missed, so is an opportunity. 5. Take standardized tests early. No one knows how high their SAT, ACT, Subject Test, or other standardized test score can go until they take the test.. Many unexpected things can affect test scores on any given day. Taking the test early will also allow time to take a test prep course if necessary. 6. Do the research. Know what the choices are when it comes to colleges. This way any coulda, shoulda, woulda regrets can be avoided later in life. Research could be as simple as visiting a school’s website. 7. Try something new. High school is a great time to spread those wings. It’s about new experiences and self-discovery. Want a certain internship, there’s no harm in calling up an employer and asking if they have any room for an eager high school student. Want to try a new sport or activity, go ahead and try it. Students are not expected to leave high school knowing exactly what they want to do, but this is a chance to start narrowing down any interests. People never know what they like - or how good they are at something - until they give it a try. 8. Be excited about going to college. Whatever college a student attends, there will be new people to meet, new things to learn, and great times to be had. That’s reason enough to be excited no matter what school is attended, a first choice or a safety. 9. Do what the college counselor says. Fear of failure and doubting personal abilities only hold students back from achieving what they want to achieve. Just say no to these thoughts and others like them. You can do it. Mi Gente, Mi Escuela A program that was created from the initiative of the School Board of Broward County to pursuit of excellence in education for Hispanics. VISION

“Mi Gente Mi Escuela” has been established with a clear vision to organize, recognize and support excellence in the education of Hispanics throughout Broward County.

OBJECTIVE

“Mi Gente Mi Escuela” aims to develop a platform for collaboration in an effort to align resources community district to serve and better meet the needs of the Hispanic community of Broward County Public Schools.

WHEREAS

Whereas the Hispanic population is growing in this district, they have been meeting, inviting members of other organizations to determine the needs of the Hispanic population. The first approach was to analyze early education, “Early Childhood”, among others reviewing individual needs, student achievement, team contributions (social workers, parents, teachers, psychologists, and many other professionals). The contribution of the family in the process of decision making, essential for success as well as interdisciplinary teamwork, instilling the love of country and patriotism, the development of creativity, problem solving and critical thinking are among other objectives pursued so that all stakeholders in this process achieve the satisfaction of the needs of all students and their families in our community. This is to involve all stakeholders to understand and use resources in order to address the physical, emotional, mental and social needs of the child and family. Another area that is engaging “Mi Gente Mi Escuela” is the education of Hispanic students in elementary, middle and high school and prepare for college. Although the Hispanic graduation rate has grown in recent years, rising from 74.6% in 2011 to 78.3% in 2013 they pursue the same increase in 2015. In this regard will provide information at a symposium on the university: “La Universidad - Si Se Puede” to align the District, University and Hispanic Community and submit the resources available to support them in achieving this goal.

Mi Gente, Mi Escuela se ha establecido con una visión clara de organizar, reconocer y apoyar la excelencia en la educación de los hispanos en todo el Condado de Broward.

OBJETIVO

Mi Gente, Mi Escuela tiene como objetivo desarrollar una plataforma de colaboración en un esfuerzo para alinear los recursos de la comunidad del distrito con el fin de servir y satisfacer mejor las necesidades de la comunidad hispana de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Broward.

CONSIDERANDO

Considerando que la población hispana está creciendo en este distrito, se han venido reuniendo, invitando a los miembros de otras organizaciones para determinar las necesidades de la población hispana. La primera aproximación fue analizar la educación temprana,”Early Childhood”, revisando entre otros las necesidades individuales, el rendimiento estudiantil, las contribuciones del equipo (trabajadores sociales, padres, maestros, psicólogos, especialistas y muchos otros profesionales). La contribución de la familia en el proceso de toma de decisiones, indispensable para el éxito así como el trabajo en equipo interdisciplinario, inculcando el amor a la patria y el patriotismo, el desarrollo de la creatividad, resolución de problemas y el pensamiento crítico, son entre otros los objetivos que se persigue de modo que todos los actores de este proceso logren la satisfacción de las necesidades de todos los estudiantes y sus familias en nuestra comunidad. Se trata de involucrar a todas las partes interesadas para comprender y utilizar los recursos a los fines de atender las necesidades físicas, emocionales, mentales y sociales del niño y la familia. Otro ámbito en que se está involucrando Mi Gente, Mi Escuela, es la educación de los estudiantes hispanos de primaria y secundaria y prepararlos para la Universidad. Aun cuando la tasa de graduación hispana ha ido creciendo en los últimos años, pasando de un 74.6 % en el 2011 a 78.3 % en el 2013 se persigue incrementar la misma en la graduación del 2015. En tal sentido van a suministrar información en un simposio sobre la universidad: “La Universidad - Si Se Puede” para alinear al Distrito, Universidad y Comunidad hispana y presentar los recursos disponibles para apoyarlos en el alcance de esta meta.

MENTORING PROGRAM FOR LATINA ADOLESCENTS Will be launched at “Indian Ridge Middle School”

“Indian Ridge Middle School”, “Mujeres Latinas Impulsando Mujeres Latinas” and “Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward” have joined forces to launch, this academic year, a mentoring initiative designed to encourage Hispanic/Latina adolescent girls to stay in school, pursue high academic goals and encourage healthy attitudes and safe practices. The program will target 25 adolescent girls at risk who are recent immigrants to the South Florida region and currently reside in low-income areas adjacent to “Indian Ridge Middle School.” Ana Valladares, President/CEO of “Mujeres Latinas Impulsando Mujeres Latinas” explains that “this new strategic alliance with BBBS is enriching this unique program and allowing our mentors to produce the desired outcomes. These are aligned with the Broward County School system goals in addressing this population.” During the academic year, each child will have in-person, phone and electronic contacts with her mentor. The mentor will also initiate one 30 minute meeting or contact with an adult family member and, at least, one hour activity with the youth and this adult. “Our vision is that this special program focused on the educational and personal development of the girls will culminate with a Leadership Institute event, which will include workshops on leadership, communication, identity, goal-setting and other topics relevant to Latina teens” says Ana Cedeno, CEO of “Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward.” “They will be introduced to outstanding leaders, from all sectors, who will share experiences, give advice, teach new skills and help build the self-confidence of the participants. Comenzará a operar en “INDIAN RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL” “Indian Ridge Middle School”, “Mujeres Latinas Impulsando Mujeres Latinas” y “Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward” han unido sus esfuerzos y talentos para instalar, a partir de este año académico, una iniciativa de mentoría orientada a evitar la deserción escolar entre las adolescentes hispanas, estimular que persigan metas académicas más elevadas y que incurran en conductas más sanas y exentas de riesgo. Ana Valladares, presidente y CEO de “Mujeres Latinas Impulsando Mujeres Latinas” explica que “esta alianza estratégica con BBBS enriquece este novedoso programa y permite que nuestros mentores produzcan los resultados deseados. Estos se corresponden con las metas que el sistema escolar del condado de Broward tiene para esta población”. Durante el año académico, el mentor tendrá contactos en persona, por teléfono o por vía electrónica con cada adolescente. También establecerá un encuentro de 30 minutos con uno de sus familiares adultos y una actividad, de al menos una hora de duración, con ambos.
