I am Alejandra Ferrera, a 27-year-old Architect and Urban Planner, born in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras and raised in a small town called Danli. Architecture is my biggest passion; I got interested in it since I was little. During my early trips, I felt attracted by architecture especially for its meaning in the world’s culture and history, and how it helps us in getting to understand the evolution of humanity. Now, I think it’s fascinating, how the built environment has an effect on people, the way that spaces can create conditions for them to interact and how through design we can influence society, transforming places and improving their living conditions. I have graduated in two universities, one UNITEC, (Tegucigalpa) Honduras and the other Anhembi Morumbi University, (Sao Paulo) Brazil. During the time I was studying I realized that this discipline is much more than just an art, it is a complex profession that includes for its development many other sciences. I understood that the only way to succeed in this career is by practicing and being constant, that inspiration comes through hard work, study and dedication.

I started working in different areas while I was studying such as real estate, project development, interior, and furniture design, BIM modeling and management. Every job brought endless learning, every project was different, big or small, the clients, the users, the context, the weather, etc. During practice, the passion for design had become stronger; being involved in diverse stages of the process made me appreciate each one of them much more and realize that conception is just the beginning and having the building finished involves the hard work of many people.

THE MODULAR HOUSE was conceived with interrelated environments connected through a central garden, allowing ventilation and natural light into the house. It is based on a 2x4 foot module that facilitates the massive production its assembly and optimization of resources. THE ARCHITECTURE has marked horizontal lines and is slightly suspended off the ground giving a sensation of lightness. Roof height differences add value to the volume. EXTRA ROOM

THE SITE is located in a tropical weather, with high temperatures and elevated humidity level throughout the year. The main goal was to create a house that could be protected from the west sun and warm condition allowing light and air entrance from the east and also the orienting the views to the mountains located at the south-west side.

BACK FACADE
THE MAIN FACADE is shaped by a principal solid volume supported by stone walls, combined with wood doors and louvers that help regulate both privacy and heat from the outside. THE INTERNAL FACADE is completely open to the gardens, mountains and the pool that reflects the house as a water mirror. THE INTERIORS are interconnected by double heights and open spaces allowing the air circulation and giving the sensation of amplitude reinforced with nature landscape view.

CHURCH| VIRGIN OF CHARITY
The design of the church was a miracle itself. From the beginning, before knowing that the church would be designed for the Virgin of Charity the idea was to develop a building that resembled to be floating in the water, the same way that the Virgin appeared to the fishermen in the Caribbean Sea.

THE EXTERIOR was conceived as a shared area where the entire neighborhood could share. A special place was reserved for a sculpture of the Virgin, a small sanctuary that would be always open for praying and offerings.

THE BUILDING is formed by one main volume which is the auditorium and tree secondary complementing the internals spaces with elements that connect them, all surrounded by a water fount respecting the original concept of the Virgin over the sea.

THE INTERIOR was conceived as a transition to a holy experience. When passing the main entrance, pilgrims walk over a bridge, feeling the proximity of water . Inside the auditorium, the water font, creates a game of lights and shadows provoked by the movement. The roof and ceilings were designed to create acoustical comfort, and the entrance of natural light.

BACKGROUND SĂŁo Paulo, is the most populated city in Latin America, with people from all over the world. Even thou exist a lack of housing there are more than four thousand abandoned buildings most of them located in the city center where the best infrastructure and services are located and are currently underused The necesity to solve this reality came only a few years ago, throughout great efforts; government programs and urban operations for the city center recovery, housing, and social inclusion, improving the quality of life and creating a new urban landscape.
GALLERY SIGHTSEEING
LOCATION The project is placed between four districts. It was selected due to its location in the city center and the existing urban problems as abandoned buildings with heritage value; the urban barrier formed by the railway line which hinders the relationship between the neighborhoods and mostly the pedestrian flow, forming an island with an urban slum; it offers services, infrastructure, and transport, but has a lack of recreational spaces, and green areas, the train and subway stations are too far away and new stations can be built taking advantage of the existing lines.

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE of the project is the revitalization of a public space, creating a seed effect in the neighborhood in order to motivate the renovation of other degraded buildings.

THE CONCEPT is a result of the study of all that SĂŁo Paulo means. Multiculturalism, nature mixed with the urban landscape, art history and especially people characterized by joy, hospitality. This diversity will be implemented in colors, materials, landscaping, vegetation, and environments created for all that inspired the project. THE PROGRAM is based on the site potential and characteristics and population needs. A linear park with different features along would give the possibility of creating different types of events. A sportive area, runways that connect the neighborhoods, parking, bicycle, bus and train stations would give to the user flexibility to choose different ways of mobility, an urban farm, a plaza. and a gallery that comes up from the revitalization of six abandoned silos. All those interventions would bring life to the place.

The windmill gallery project was developed with the aim of revitalizing the grain silos that were in the plot where there is currently a favela. Three volumes were annexed, one of circulation that serves as an integrator of all spaces, a higher volume where there is sightseeing spot where you can appreciate the view of the entire park and the neighborhood, and a bar on the top level. A third volume is created to complement the exhibition area with an auditorium, administrative area, gift shop, coffee shop and spaces for workshops.

OLD SILOS + ANNEX
A steel structure was used in the project so the intervention in the silos was minimal, and a Vierendeel beam in the main volume taking advantage of the natural slope allowing a high access and space in the lower level where activities could be performed in the outside while in a covered space. The covering system allows ventilated facades, it consists of a profilit glass on the vertical circulation and in the top volume; and corten steel in the main volume.

WINDMILL GALLERY
WORKSHOP| DEVELOPING PEOPLE`S PLACES The workshop consisted of the development of an urban intervention in a Village through the participation of the community in a collaboration with a team of ten architects with different nationalities led by two Indian professors.

After having visited the site and had meetings with the community we performed a diagnosis and intervention ideas as play spaces, sitting areas, a mural which will represent the identity and black spots painted around where people could write messages, and even news.

Some ideas had changed during the construction process and the community expressed itself creating places with local identity and a deeper site appropriation.
We learn that sometimes as architects, we have an idea of a city but this is not always the real need or desire of the community and we must always involve them in the process from the beginning in order to achieve useful and successful urban spaces.
