Whether it’s major league, minor league, varsity, or undergraduate, there are many positive ways that sports can impact peoples’ lives. Economic Impact The sporting industry is a big money-maker. In the “Outlook for the sports market in North America through 2023”, PwC projects a compound annual rate grow of 3.2%, from $71.1 billion in 2018 to $83.1 billion in 2023 in for segments of sport in the US (media rights, ticketing, sponsorship and merchandising). Many people don’t realize that it also benefits smaller communities in a financial way. Tourism will follow fame, whether it’s a small, nostalgic playing field or a giant sports arena. Loyalty to a team and/or specific player like Leo Messi, Virat Kohli or David Ortiz, is high enough to attract fans who will pay for souvenirs and merchandising. In

addition, the local lodging and dining establishments will benefit as well. When a city is hosting an event, there is also huge money to be made. The bigger the event, the more revenue earned. Jobs The American sports industry provides hundreds of thousands of people with jobs every year. Beyond the athletes themselves, people employed by the industry include coaches, referees, agents, administration, stadium vendors, and ticket sellers. Have in mind that just in Spain, direct jobs from the sport industry represented 1.1% of the country employment rate (Palco23). Healthy Role Models Children who look up to athletes as role models are more likely to have a healthier exercise and dietary regime. In addition, when athletes are mentors, they inspire children to also be productive and helpful members of society. Athletes have celebrity status, plus the bonus of encouraging good health. America needs to find ways to decrease the percentage of obese children. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 1 in 5 children are considered to be overweight. Not only do children benefit from getting physically fit, but they also experience first-hand what it’s like to be on a team and work together honorably towards a specific goal. Whether or not that goal is achieved, it still builds character. Community/CSR and Charity Relations The charitable arm of a sport’s league is the one that arranges special fundraising prizes and Make-A-Wish events. Local sports teams and leagues have a lot of crossover events that benefit their community because an event that is attended by a household name will increase profits and attendance. Often, teams will also show up to children’s hospitals in order to cheer up the patients, giving them something positive to think about. Look at the example of LaLiga Foundation, and their project in India were 400 boys and girls play soccer together during the #FootbalPeople Week, to promote equality and diversity. Unity and Pride on Local and National Levels Nothing brings people together like a common interest. When it’s competitive, there’s a natural human need to choose a side and then root for them. This can happen at any level, from little league, LaLiga, the World Cup or the Olympics. Friendly rivalry at the community level is a great way for people to celebrate local pride while still remaining friends. The higher the stakes, the more competitive, but that also means the bigger celebration when there’s victory.
