Playing sports takes endurance, dedication, and impressive skill. No matter what a player’s gender may be, they have the potential to become an exceptional athlete. However, women all around the world are often discriminated against in sports because of their gender. Gender inequality in sports has been a significant issue for many years, so multiple sports organizations and foundations are working towards better gender equality in sports. World leaders gathered in 2015 and agreed upon 17 Global Goals, known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These goals were designed to address and resolve the world’s most pressing social issues by 2030. Goal 5 of the 17 addresses the challenges faced by girls and women today. The United Nations recognizes that changes need to be made so all genders are treated equally. An organization that is following suit with the UN is Common Goal. Common Goal is aiming for more gender equality through sports. With a sport like football, which is followed by nearly half of the world’s population, they understand it has the power to influence the norms as well as change the views and attitudes of individuals, communities, and even the world. To promote gender equality in sports and across the globe, Common Goal created Global Goal 5 Accelerator by teaming up with Soccer without Borders and Women Win. This project encourages more girls to participate in sports and even have more female coaches on the field. Every gender should feel represented while watching their favorite sports, which is precisely what Common Goal’s Global Goal 5 Accelerator does. Sports bring both males and females together, which is why both deserve to have their chance to shine while playing the game. When girls can see just as many females as males on the field, they’ll feel represented and empowered. More sports and sports organizations must strive for gender equality. Every skilled and determined athlete should be able to play the game, no matter what their gender may be.
