Although sports involve competition with winners and losers, sports bring people together and unites individuals through their hard work and dedication. There are many positive values in sports such as honesty, commitment, respect, work ethic, and so much more. All around the world, people come together to play or watch their favorite sports, which is why the United Nations sees how well it fits in with their objectives for development and peace. The United Nations wanted to raise awareness of sports’ potential to promote peace and development by creating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP). The 6th of April marks this Day and promotes the positive influence that sport can have on advancing human rights and social and economic development. The UN recognizes how sports can encourage individual development, health promotion and disease prevention, social integration, gender equality, trauma relief, communication and social mobilization, and much more. This is why IDSDP is so essential and why it deserves recognition. https://alejandroescarragil.net/the-importance-of-international-day-of-sport-for-development-and-peace/

Organizations of the UN system, such as the International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development, organized the UN Office on Sport for Development and Peace and established partnerships with the International Olympic Committee. Set out in the Olympic Charter, the Committee has the mission of “placing sport at the service of humankind and promoting a peaceful society and healthy lifestyles by associating sport with culture and education and safeguarding human dignity without any discrimination whatsoever.” The International Paralympic Committee is also recognized by the General Assembly and how much their role plays in inclusion by showcasing the achievements of athletes with an impairment to a global audience. They also act as a primary vehicle to change societal perceptions of disability sport, encouraging even more individuals to come together. Whether it’s kicking a ball around a field and racing to see who’s fastest, sports isn’t just about competition. Sports encompass unity and acceptance. The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace shows how much the sports community can bring people from all walks of life together. Through vast cultures and across borders, IDSDP encourages social change, community development, and fosters peace and understanding.
