ALEJANDRO GIL HERRERO ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO & CURRICULUM VITAE
I was born in Segovia, a small but ancient city of the countryside in the centre of Spain. Living in a small place has always invited me to look outside, leave the well-known and seek for the unknown, looking for a global point of view. I completed my Studies in the Universidad PolitĂŠcni-ca de Madrid. During this time, I was very fortunate to have different international experience practicing, researching and traveling all around the five continents. After graduating I decided to keep searching of the unknown which has allowed me to work and learn in different countries and continents; Spain, India, Vietnam, Malaysia and currently in Australia. The main reason that has always aimed me in this quest has been the human side of architecture and the relationships that the human being displays in the urban space. It is the urban scenario who sets the base for a life in community as a collective and not as individuals. Along the years I have created (still creating) a big and international network not only of people related to architecture and education but also from a multidisciplinary background. This is allowing me to consider the world as my classroom, my library and my playground, always learning and listening to the others. Nelson Mandela said that Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world. I agree and believe that trough architecture, urbanism and design we can facilitate and provide the basis for this change. Knowing our roots and traditions as a human race will support us creating a more prosperous and equal future for everyone.

Title: Hospital extension Architect: Space Matrix Location: Da Nang, Vietnam Year: 2017 Client: Hoan My Ltd. Status: Under construction
Summary
The design proposal for the hotel delivers a highly activated ground plane which is defined by transparent frontages and strong, sculptural sandstone forms which anchor and connect the buildings to their geological and historical context. A sweeping curved podium draws pedestrians into the laneway network from Herald Square and Pitt Street. The upper volume of the building which contains the hotel rooms has been situated on the north to maximise views from the hotel rooms and to provide a generous distance to the southern neighbours minimising the impact of the development.
Hotel guest functions and publicly accessible areas of the hotel have been planned to maximise views to the north and also to activate Pitt St. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic are separated by level to provide seamless arrivals and departures to the hotel. Minor modifications are proposed to Building A to give greater coherency for the overall development.

Summary
What´s the meaning and relevance of public space in indian city?Like everything in India, public space is a crazy mixture of activities and purpose where peolpe, animals, vehicles and noice flow all around life. A density of 650p/ Ha in Walled city becomes really hard to find personal space for working, conecting peolpe, having fun and basically living. In spite of being a problem, indian way of life solves it creating a continous multipurpose in all spheres of life, both public space in family and social life in community. Relating with the programme of my final thesis; I noticed that a big amound of children need to move long distances to get school or highschool and in precariuos way because there are not too many educative centres inside the Wa-
lled city. So I got the opportunity of develop a Highschool there and try to minimize the problem of movement. I wanted that my project was another piece in the big puzzle that indian urban planning means. A multipurpose space where educational activities take place and mix with other suburb´s activities. An open area to the community and a meeting point where space can be change deppending on necessity and purpose along the day. Combining own materials (clay bricks, bamboo and concrete) the project is inserted inside a plot and offers the suburb new facilities; music area, dancing and playing space, open air cinema, workshops and obviously classrooms and spaces for learning and studying.
OTHER SELECTED WORK 2012-2017 This is a selection of other type of projects, where architecture, urbanism and education have always been the main component but from different points of view and ways of thinking. All of them also show the importance of engaging with design and creativity from a community based projects. Also different ways to enrich my career as an architect and a person taking advantage of these opportunities that rarely get the chance of developing in a professional/industry environment.

In collaboration with: Architects without Frontiers http://www.anganwadiproject.com/projects/ Location: Ahmedabad, India
In collaboration with: ARTIM http://www.todolocrialatierra.com/ Location: Burgos, Spain
Bholu 11 preschool was built in Ramapir No Tekro, one of the largest slums in Ahmedabad. Tekro is comprised of approximately 150,000 people belonging to the so-called Dalit or ‘untouchable’ caste. The new school is sited near a major dumping area in the slum, with two existing trees on site. Bholu 11 is a happy, bright and thermally cool learning environment, with an ample walled garden space (a luxury in the slum). Bholu 11 has become a beautiful oasis within the barren slum, with young and old enjoying the greenery of the vegetable garden and the shade beneath the two trees. Wall and floor mosaics add an element of surprise and playfulness to the space, and express the love that was given to this small project by volunteers and community
Invited as an expert in tradicional construction: The workshop gave the opportunity to the participants of learning and experimenting about tradicional ways of construction. The project developed was based on the use of clay and reed as part of the heritage of certain regions in Spain. The goal of the workshop was the understanding of local materials and the technology employed along the history but also with the idea that traditional materials and traditional techniques can be a real option in the architecture and construction of the 21st Century.

Education and a direct contact with traditional techniques and experts related to the use of timber as a traditional material all around the world but with special emphasis in its use in Spain. Traditional construction and materials integrated with modern design and current needs of the society. The project developted was a structure integrated in a public square wich provides shade and places for sitting. Traditional construction and materials but with a modern design.
Education and a direct contact with traditional techniques and experts related to the use of clay in the regions of Spain and Morocco. The program was developed in two phases; the first in Spain and the second one in Morocco with a theoretical and practical process. That gave me a deep understanding of the important of clay in construction not only in the past but also as a material to be kept in mind nowadays.

CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP
In collaboration with: Acetsam & Zulorak http://www.zuloark.com Location: Madrid, Spain
In collaboration with: Acetsam & Canyaviva http://www.canyaviva.com Location: Madrid, Spain
We started by identifying the lack of place available to sit in the central courtyard of our school. Therefore, we decided that the place for the workshop had to be there. We proposed then the construction of three different structures that would be connected to create a stand and a pergola that will protect from the sun and illuminate at night the central courtyard. Organized in three different teams, each one with the responsi-bility to design and construct its own wooden structure with no restrictions. It is considered as a process of negotiation between the teams who had limited material.
For this year World Habitat Day WHD we managed to bring to our school the “Can-ya Viva collective, to organize the workshop. It was an incredible opportunity to have them with us. The workshop consisted of building a pavilion with river cane. The objective was to understand the characteristics of cane and bamboo structures: thanks to its flexibility and lightness, they are even resistant to earthquakes; and thanks to the aerodynamic forms they can assme, resistant to high winds too.
