ALEJANDRA PÉREZ VÉLEZ GARDEN DESIGN
I have incorporated ecological principles in conjunction with architectural and functional structures to increase my ability to produce sustainable landscape designs regardless of the scale of the project. The powerful impact of designing in the function of time is crucial to achieving sustainability and aesthetics, which are the core values of my work. This portfolio is a collection of experiences where knowledge, research, creativity and self-study have merged to produce al Natural landscapes. https://alnatural.houzz.co.uk/

Challenges have been a long term passion in my career and so have been a continuous desire for caring and giving and an immense love for nature. This altruistic approach led me to enhance my professional life with the study of landscapes and the way people interact with them. A few years ago, I took the adventure of complementing my previous engineering degree with my passion for designing spaces that provide a genuine human-nature interaction.
“A garden is a result of an arrangement of natural materials according to aesthetic laws; inter woven throughout are the ar tist’s outlook on life, his past experiences, his affections, his attempts, his mistakes and his successes. Rober to Burle Mar x.

Pocket gardens
Adjacent nature is a pocket rear garden designed for a young couple who lives in the city and works from home. Elements such as space, geometry, use of light, height, and water as well as functionality give them plenty of possibilities to enjoy and explore.

This planting scheme is an inspiration from Beth Chatto’s dry garden. All plants were carefully selected to be drought tolerant species. This sunny bed is filled with delicate textures of soft grasses and fine leaves to respond effectively to the aspect, prevailing winds and soil requirements of the garden. Dominant late summer planting adds interest, giving the garden its main character. Contrasting textures and forms are added to provide all year round structure. Some species coming from North, Central and South America (Yucca gloriosa, Stipa tenuissima and Scabiosa atropurpurea ‘Chile Black’) provide an exciting and creative scheme. Also few species such as Echinops, Pulsatilla and Euphorbia rigida are grown as curiosities for the enjoyment of visitors.

PLANTING PLAN The Recharge-Me garden is a design for children in the early stages who attend to Friendly Families, a community-led nursery in Deptford, London. The initiative was born in a workshop held with staff, parents and the designer where collectively, they draw some of the hopes for the outside space. The purpose of the garden is to offer multi-sensory experiences to children by interacting with nature and with themselves, so these experiences become a cycle of giving and receiving and recharging mutual energy. The methods used are based on eco-friendly and permaculture principles, such as the no dig gardening, the use of natural insect control, some of the materials are recycled and reused; the planting is a classic child-friendly scheme. https://pressreleases.responsesource.com/news/99861/london-college-of-garden-design-names-competition-winners/

SHADY COURTYARD
A small selection of plants provides a basic framework for this courtyard; large evergreen shrubs give all year-round structure filed between and underneath with a range of groundcovers, grasses deciduous plants, smaller shrubs, and perennials for texture and foliage contrast. In such a tight area the colour pallet is very simple, the selection is restricted to green, cream and yellow. The North-facing position of the garden is ideal for shade-loving plants such as ferns; some shade tolerant shrubs were also selected for their fragrance to add an extra feature. The garden has low-maintenance requirements and will require annual spring/autumn tidy and prune.

Plan
Axonometric
The next phase is the planting design which includes a set of documents that show the location and spacing of all the plants, both new and existing, in the design. The accompanying Plan Schedule lists the plant names, sizes and quantities and is used for costing, ordering and setting out the plants. We also include 3D visuals for a better understanding of the scheme to be planted. After the garden has been constructed we are able to source, supply and set out all the plants in the garden and organise the planting if required. We can also prepare easy to understand Maintenance Guides to ease the client gently into caring for their new garden.
BEFORE
HOJA 47 - PORTFOLIO
The design process starts with an initial site visit to view the garden and discuss the brief and the client´s budget. This visit allows them to express their expectations and it also offers the opportunity to get to know alNatural and how we work; once the visit is done we prepare a free proposal which is discussed with you. After approval and upon request, the next step is the site survey and analysis along with an outline plan at scale, artistic impressions and 3D sketches, once agreed, we present the master plan. Construction of the garden is detailed in the Specifications document, and can be carried out by a joined landscape contractor agreed by both parties.
