01 background

who we are G91 is an unofficial code name for a group of young architects and architects to be. G stands for group, and 91 stands for 1991, a year most of us were born in, or feel that way. G91 consists of Andrea Tamaš, Ivan Stanojev, Teodora Basta, Milan Dragoljević, Jovana Jekić, Cvijan Pajkanović and Aleksandra Raković. We all come from different backgrounds, but our paths crossed at Novi Sad’s school of architecture. We met there in October 2014. Ivan and Andrea were teaching assistents on Contemporary Architecture, and the rest of us students. It all started when we finished our course and Ivan and Andrea decided to invite us to a cup of coffee... what we do So we gathered to discuss on numerous issues in architecture, concerning both theory and practice. We compared everything, here and there, now and then. Going further and furthure just made us realize how much do we lack

information and references on serbian architecture. We just kept on opening new issues and things that needed to be done. Our work is based on research and creating valuable database on different topics. It is a thorough and never-ending work, just waiting for an opportunity to be seized. biennale sessions That is exactly what happend with our research on architecture made by female architects. While trying to make data on buildings in our university campus, which is by the way probably the most succeded urban design project in Novi Sad, one fact just popped up - large number of buildings were made by female architects. Then we decided to widden the research and started making database, until one day we saw a chance to go public with it. We formed a larger group and made ourselves ready for Biennale Sessions 2014.

research criteria

What we want to find out WHO built(s) our city.

We noticed large amount of female architects emerging in the results. Then we decided to go deeper. It has nothing to do with feminism or gender equality. It is only a specific aspect of a search for our identity and continuity in architecture.

Not so popular, but actual trend of modern society is losing identity on urban areas. Instead of continuity that could easily be followed and referenced to, there has always been this situation of wandering and searching. The problem is that the local architects always looked back on what is going on somewhere in the world and trying to apply that here, while not knowing themselves enough. However, rewriting someone else’s tradition can never lead to positive outcome. This phenomenon is especially characteristic for the environment we live in. There is not enough information on who builts our city. That leads to losing identity and forgetting history which is a base. History is 95% of the future. This is a problem, and our answer to it – research.

As a criteria we first took participation in city building and presence in literature, but in our conversations we came up with larger number of women then presented in books. That is how interview became the main form of research. There are women that do their architectural practice independantly, and the ones working as a couple. Already from 1919. in Serbia women always had the same rights and starting position as men did. Everything further is a question of personality and not gender equality. There is no such thing as male and female architecture in Serbia. There is only good and bad one.

what and why

WHO BUILT YOUR CITY – WOMEN ARCHITECTS OF ____ is an interactive workshop of students from University of Novi Sad – Scene Design and Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Biennale Sessions. The nature of the happening is dual. Firstly, with the aim to expand the knowledge about the presence and work of women architects all around the world, the visitors of the exhibition were asked to join the interactive workshop and give feedback about buildings in their cities which were designed by women. Secondly, it was a presentation of the website WOMEN ARCHITECT OF NOVI SAD, WWW.W-A-NS.COM, which introduces a specific part of our architectural identity – women architects who shaped the built environment of Novi Sad (the second largest city in Serbia) over the last century. The website contains results of a research conducted by a group of architecture students and practicing architects G91 and it’s a contribution to the database on the city’s contemporary architecture - from this specific point of view.

when and where

14th International Architecture Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia Biennale Sessions Sale d’Armi, Arsenale Venice, Italy 7th June, 2014

how

Workshop was set as dual event, which was supported by spatial organization of Sale d’Armi, parted in two parts by projection screen. That way we used backstage to show a movie we made during Days of Architecture. In entrance part was the main show. We had world maps, as well as map of Novi Sad, printed on long paper walls and wrapped around steel columns. Entering the pavillion visitors would be given flyers with questionare and instructions how to fill and apply them. So they would write down the information and place it on a proper place on map. In a meanwhile, our students were finishing the map of Novi Sad and that way presented our city and architecture. During the two-hour-long workshop there were numerous visitors passing by and then stopping to see our presentation and then delightfully filling in the questionare. Eventually it ended, leaving us with a huge pile of information on defferent objects, mostly in Europe, designed by women architects.
