Architecture taking over nature and vice versa

ARCHITECTURE TAKING OVER NATURE AND VICE VERSA

A personal thought.

Woods are something more than trees in Norway, they are part of the Norwegian way of thinking, the Norwegian way of interacting, an expression of calmness and personal space. And a hytte in the forest is a particular expression of architecture, and a special time condition.

Architecture is constantly opening itself aggressively in nature. Cut out pieces of mountains, deep holes in the ground, architecture replacing trees and forests. But when a building is abandoned, after some years, nature starts to grow slowly again, inside and around the forgotten buildings, including it finally in the expression of flora.

Nature and architecture have a strong relationship, that is frame very drastically. This is where nature ends and architecture begins, and inside of the architecture piece, in a specific frame as well, there are areas where nature can appear, internal gardens, flowerpots. I want to reverse this relation, and begging with an architectural space growing from and with nature. I want to create an architectural sculpture that behave like nature and adjust naturally to the landscape, an element that is intended to be taking over by nature in a fast and natural way. In Norway the architecture and nature are strongly divided in frames, even though, nature is a big part of the Norwegian life style. I am interested in developing an architectural sculpture that will attend to minimized the division between this two elements. Site specificity is crucial for this project. In architecture, because of the functional needs, we are attached to flat surfaces, that you can almost never find in forests. For this proposal, I want to connect to the irregularity of the land. When you walk on uneven surfaces your body moves different. When you lean your back to a tree, your body moves softly and adjust naturally to it. I want to extend this to the inside of an artificial element. A site specific sculptural space, growing from the natural areas near the SĂĽna river. I want to create an architectural sculpture that will not disrupt the natural surroundings, that will adjust to it, grow with it, relate to it in a symbiotic way. You cannot speed up the period in which vegetation grows, but you could create a space that will make the process easier. A shelter in which the structure will be open for interaction and changes, that will allow plants to grow inside, will allow water to be collected, humidity and fungus, so that the artificial shelter will soon be a natural one. I which to explore the possibility of adding in the natural landscape structures, that grow with and from nature, relating to the surroundings in a natural way. If forests are a unique space where self discovery appears, where social interaction happens in ways you cannot see in the city, I will like to create architectural sculptures that will feel like they are part of the forest. And you could have a shelter that feels as natural as sitting down under the shadow of a tree.

SECTION OF STRUCTURE Inspired in the relation between nature and architecture, organic and geometry, the project consist on a geometrical but organic structure, made by frames with a distance between each of them.

The project aims to be a space taken over by nature, to create a symbiotic relation between the human made item and the natural environment in the “Jungle like” areas next to the Sanå river. This project will be design in site and will changed with the landscape and the forest. This is not a piece to be shown but to be experienced, it can stay and it can move, is a project that is finished when the spectators, all kind of spectators(people, insects, cats, birds, plants), relate to it.
