Alessandro Calastri: A Career in the Restaurant Business Alessandro Calastri is a restaurant operator in New York. He is hardworking and accustomed to the fast-paced environment of a restaurant, where the pressure is almost constant. He did not originally plan on a career in the restaurant business: after graduating from Providence College with a degree in Global Studies in 2011, he got a job as a research analyst at an international brokerage firm.

Alessandro Calastri He enjoyed the work, but as a self-described “people person,” he wondered if he might be happier doing something else. “I attended the International Culinary Center in NYC and received two certificates in Restaurant Management and intensive Chef training.” By 2012, he was working as a management assistant at a New York restaurant.

Alessandro Calastri Looking back, he says that his background in sports helped to prepare him for what he’s doing now. “I grew up playing competitive sports ... a restaurant setting is very similar to that.”

Alessandro Calastri Many successful people have reported similar experiences, and this may be one of the great benefits of playing sports, especially team sports. Even something as simple as a back yard pick-up game teaches the value of teamwork, with what might be a disparate group of people all working toward a common goal, each with different responsibilities. That’s where the old cliché, “there is no ‘I’ in team,” comes into play: being part of a team requires you to suppress personal achievement for the great good of your teammates, in order for everyone to succeed.

Alessandro Calastri Team sports also teach players about goal-setting, for both the short term and long term. Reaching goals requires careful planning – the sort you might make in a huddle, or a dugout. By doing, the entire team learns to be more cohesive and function as a unit.

Alessandro Calastri Alessandro Calastri has never regretted making the switch to food service. “Restaurants have changed me for the better,” he says, by “teaching humility and learning how to serve and treat everyone the same.”
