The project developed during the Architectural Design Laboratory 3 focuses on the relationship between new and old in a consolidated urban context. The intervention area is in fact located in the heart of Milan and it is characterized by the presence of archaeological remains related to the Imperial Palace of Roman times that stood here. On the area there is also another historical element with which the project must confront, named ”Tower of the Gorani”, of the eleventh century. The block, after having suffered the bombardments of the Second World War, hasn’t been rebuilt and it is therefore open. The building proposes as an element capable of mending the block, recreating the front along Via Brisa and recomposing its shape. At the same time, the elongated shape of the building allows to create a public space between itself and adjacent buildings that can hold together the different elements of the surroundings. The building represents the new Urban Center of the city of Milan, a place where the new transformations of the city are discussed, and which contains public spaces that can be used by citizens.

Factory of Ideas is the name of the project developed during Architecture and Structure Laboratory. The project concerns the construction of a new building within the Scientific Campus of the University of Florence, in Sesto Fiorentino. The location is not random, correspond to building’s function, that is Fab Lab, a center where it is possible to prototype new objects, thanks to a series of large machines and 3D printers suitable for this purpose. In addition, the building houses educational spaces, such as classrooms, meeting rooms and collective work areas. The building has the shape of a parallelepiped and externally is punctuated by vertical elements at full height that give it the character of an industrial building. This choice want to show outside the vocation of the building. Internally the building is built on two levels above ground, except for the area that houses the prototyping laboratory that is at full height. Structurally, importance has been given to the seismic isolation from the ground, in fact the steel frame structure rests on elastomeric insulators.

The destruction of the Serbian National Library in Belgrade by the Germans troops during the Second World War, is one of the darkest episodes for the Serbian people, as with this “gesture” the story and the culture of an entire people. Today there is nothing, just a pile of rubble is what remains of the Library, but the importance that this place has for the people of Belgrade is still the same. The theme with which the project has to do is therefore that of memory. Moreover, an excavation following the tragic event brought to light some archaeological remains of the Roman period, probably concerning a Domus. The project therefore also has the task of finding a dialogue with the archaeological remains, of the Library and of the Domus, and with the surrounding part of the city. Given the premises, we chose to listen the public vocation of this space and think to an element that can be able to create a meeting place. For this purpose have been created two plates, one at street level, and one at hypogeum level, made in metal grid, connected by a ramp. The hypogeum floor houses a collection of books that recalls the destroyed library

25

The “Certosa del Galluzzo”, also known as “Certosa di Firenze”, was the object of the Architecture Restoration Laboratory. In particular, among the parts that make up the structure, Palazzo Acciaiuoli has been studied, leaning against the south-eastern part of the Certosa. As foreseen the operative protocol for every restoration project, also in this case the actual planning phase was preceded by a cognitive phase of the architectural structure, in which have been studied the dimensional, material characteristics, the degradation state and the cracks of the building. Before the project the interior of the building is empty and without a function. The project starts from the necessity to find an appropriate use for these spaces, that consider the strongly cultural vocation of the site. Therefore, we think of a multi-purpose center that can host various functions open to public viewer, including a space suitably equipped to accommodate a permanent exhibition on the Certosa. Furthermore, to characterize the external entrance to the Palace, was created a cor-ten steel recognition element

33

Don Camillo and Peppone are two residential tower buildings in the district of Detmerode in Wolfsburg, built in the 1960s and destined to families of Wolkswagen workers whose headquarters are located in the city. Housing and in particular social housing was the theme of the Laboratory of Architecture and Environment and the two buildings mentioned above are the object of intervention. The project starts from the need to adapt the existing buildings to actual needs both in terms of space and energy performance. At the same time, the construction of a new building in X-Lam is expected to act as a flywheel to accommodate the inhabitants of Don Camillo and Peppone apartments for the period necessary for renovation. This building will also remain after the works. The project includes a connection plate between the towers that also serves as a meeting place for the inhabitants and a new skin for the parking building. Furthermore with the masterplan it is realized a new design of the open spaces and are created new services for the inhabitants of the neighborhood.

41

The project related to the Master’s Degree Thesis focuses on the relationship between old and new in a consolidated urban context. The project area is located in Lecce and is characterized by the archaeological remains of a sixteenth century convent that stood here. The project aims to recreate the emptiness created by demolishing the previous building and establishing a relationship with archeology, in which it becomes a living material of the project. The strategy that has been adopted is the reconstruction of the disappeared building. Reconstruction that assigns different hierarchies to the elements that make up the project, giving a greater hierarchy to elements identified as essential of Franciscan monasteries, namely the cloister and the church with the bell tower. The designed space becomes an archaeological park where it’s possible to visit the remains of the convent and the different types of interventions that allow it to be used, as well as to host specific functions such as multi-purpose laboratories, an infopoint and a space for exhibitions and small conferences.
