To those (virtually) reading this newspaper: This semester has been like none other, just as the past weeks have been unprecedented for everybody across the country. In the middle of all this change, many of us struggled not only to keep up with coursework, but to get the grades we usually get. Friends were no longer seen in class or on the Quad, but via a laptop screen (for the lucky ones). The health of our loved ones who are high-risk or elderly was, and still remains, at the forefront of our minds. For some of us, we had to take extra precautions as we knew we could very well contract the disease and suffer serious consequences. It’s safe to say that no student was left unaffected. Yet the students listed in this special grad issue still managed to finish their degrees. Practicums may have looked different, final projects may have been restructured and clinicals may have come with extra protective equipment, but these stu-
dents will soon be seeing their diplomas in the mail. We at The Alestle could not be more proud of them. For those who expected to graduate this semester but have been unable to due to challenges brought on by the pandemic, we are still proud of you, too. Getting through this tough time is an accomplishment in itself, and it’s OK if things didn’t go as planned. As Kristin Lohr, a popular life coach, once said, “You’ve never seen this version of you, so give yourself a little grace and breathe through it.” Whether or not you graduate this semester does not change your value. The Alestle hopes now that the spring semester has come to a close that all students celebrate getting through school in the midst of a global pandemic, because that is a huge feat in itself. Sincerely,
The Alestle staff Your friends at The Alestle

Student speakers to encourage others in only one minute ALEX AULTMAN reporter
Despite the Vadalabene Center remaining empty this weekend, grad speakers plan to share motivational speeches with their peers through a virtual ceremony. Most college students look forward to the experience of walking across the stage and receiving their diplomas. Due to the pandemic and stay-at-home order, a traditional commencement ceremony isn’t possible. Instead, SIUE will be holding a virtual commencement ceremony this Saturday. During a typical year, the student speakers selected by each school would come up to the podium and give a speech. For the class of 2020, each speaker was asked to record a one-minute video to play during the virtual ceremony. Executive Director of University Marketing and Communications Doug McIlhagga said they chose to include the speakers because they wanted to keep things as close to normal as possible. “You want to have a ceremony that most resembles what we normally do and having a student
aspect to it, talking to their peers, seems to be a good idea,” McIlhagga said. “Hopefully they’ll add a youthful twist to it and entertain people at the same time and hopefully give them a motivational, feel-good aspect to it.” The videos will be significantly shorter than a traditional speech would be. McIlhagga said they chose to keep them short to keep students interested. “The data shows you that anything that drifts beyond 60 to 90 seconds, people are not going to watch until its conclusion. The other thing is that usually you have to hook people in the first five to 10 seconds when you see data about how people watch a video,” McIlhagga said. “If they’re not hooked in those first five to 10 seconds, they leave. So, trying to give them something that’s brief, that’s solid, and in this aspect entertaining was something we were trying to do.” While students understand that the university is doing what they can given the current circumstances, students are still sad their graduation won’t be how they imagined it. Senior politi-
cal science and philosophy major Hayley Smith, of Decatur, Illinois, is the speaker for the College of Arts and Sciences. She said she feels her college experience is incomplete without experiencing a traditional graduation alongside her friends. “My friends and I were all supposed to decorate hats because we were all going to be in the College of Arts and Sciences graduation and we won’t get to do that,” Smith said. “I think just getting to see my friends and make those last memories of all of us crossing the finish line together was kind of sad not to be able to do that. It feels like there’s no ending chapter. It’s like we’ve just stopped in the middle of the book.” Students are also missing out on traditions specific to their fields and organizations. Senior pharmacy major Austin Dillon, of Dixon, Illinois, is the student speaker for the School of Pharmacy. Dillon said he was looking forward to the School of Pharmacy’s graduation banquet. “It’s kind of a tradition that the School of Pharmacy holds a graduation banquet for all the
students graduating [and] we’d invite faculty,” Dillon said. “I’ve been a part of the class officers since our first year of pharmacy school. [The fact] that we’ve been raising funds for that and not being able to host that event in the traditional sense has been hard for the whole class as well as the class officers to try to plan an alternative.” These student speakers are still trying to look on the bright side of the situation. Smith said the campus closure alleviated some of the pressure of senior year. “I got to relax a little more because senior year there’s so much going on like senior assignments, last meetings, transitioning from being in organiza-
tions to handing over your leadership position to other people,” Smith said. “I feel like COVID-19 has cut down on the stress of the last moments and quick turnover of senior year.” The virtual commencement ceremony will be available for viewing at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. The university is planning to have an in-person commencement at the end of summer, health precautions permitting. For more information, visit the school’s website.

Spring graduate finds a link between education funding and life expectancy in Illinois ALEX AULTMAN reporter A graduating senior found that in Illinois, the lack of funding in rural schools can impact how long their students will live. School districts in rural areas often have a significant disparity in funding compared to more urban areas. Senior political science major Jacob McGowan, of Harrisburg, Illinois, linked rural education to life expectancy in his senior research project. McGowan said he became interested in doing this research after noticing the disparities in education between himself and his peers. “Being from Harrisburg, Illinois, I kind of grew up in a school system that was what I would describe as under-funded,” McGowan said. “I think I really realized this once I came to SIUE just talking with other students and discussing our experiences in high school and even before that, like, the level of technology and overall resources that are provided throughout education made me realize that what I had received at Harrisburg was a lot less than some of my peers at SIUE. Taking that forward I wanted to explore how that would affect certain things.” McGowan discovered a link
between education and life ex- tion funding and life expectancy pectancy after studying how life on the county level within Illinois expectancy has been decreasing and Ohio, then studied those stain recent years. He said he chose tistics on the state level in all 50 public education because it deter- states. He said he found that edumines variables like income and cation did impact life expectancy future education. “When I chose education to look at and how that affects life expectancy I was more so using education as a proxy for a set of variables. The way I think of education is — so your high school education is what’s going to set you up for your college education, right?” McGowan said. JACOB MCGOWAN “Then your colSenior political science major lege education is going to set you up for your job and then your job is going to set in Illinois. “I ultimately was able to reyou up with your insurance and your overall quality of life. he wasn’t able to link rural education to lower life expectancy in the rest of the country due to his limited access to data. “I expected the relationship to be a little bit stronger but I didn’t see that with all the cases. I did say in my research that this is likely due to my ability to gather data,” McGowan said. “Being a student I don’t have access to all the data that other researchers typically would, so I think if I had access to some of that data I would probably be seeing more results that I predicted.” According to the CDC, citizens in rural areas are at higher risk for common causes of death like heart disease, cancer and strokes. Political science professor Laurie Rice said McGowan’s research can be used to advocate for increased funding for rural schools in Illinois. “I think [his research] shows us that one of the ways to

increase rural life expectancy and decrease some of the disparities that we see by region in life expectancy is actually to invest in education,” Rice said. “He did statistical models of the U.S. as a whole and he did within the county level for Illinois and Ohio and particularly in Illinois he found that there’s a link between how much a school district spends on students and their education and life expectancy. Increasing the investment that we make might be one way to help solve this disparity that we see in life expectancy based on people who live in rural areas.” McGowan is graduating this semester and has been accepted into law school at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Political science department chair Ken Moffett said it was well-deserved after all his hard work. “It’s very, very well-deserved. He’s worked hard. He’s worked diligently,” Moffett said. “He’s worked well and I’m proud of him. I’m happy to have had him as a student in the department.” McGowan won the fall 2019 Senior Assignment Award in the Political Science Department. Other Honors Day award recipients can be found on their website.

SIUE Industrial Engineer has promising future thanks to past accomplishments MATT BARTELS reporter
After creating a Human Powered Vehicle and racing it in Michigan back in 2019, senior Tiana Sherman looks to have a successful future ahead of her. Sherman is an industrial engineering major from Washington, Illinois. Back in 2019, Sherman was a part of the SIUE engineering team which qualified to compete in an event held by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Schools from around the world brought their HPVs to compete. “You go to these competitions, you travel to Michigan State, and compete against other big named schools. There is a school from Egypt that comes, there’s a school from Canada. We get to compete against really well-established universities,” Sherman said. Sherman and her team placed among the best in the nation at the HPV event, finishing 11th out of the 50 teams. Sherman said she is a very competitive person and even though they didn’t get first, it was exciting to be a part of the competition. “I’m a very competitive person so it’s exciting to go and compete against schools that have a lot of resources and a lot of talent, and then watch SIUE do better than a lot of them,” Sherman said. Professor Michael Denn is a mechanical engineering professor for SIUE. He said
when Sherman joined the engineering team to work on the human powered vehicle, they didn’t recruit her to the project. She showed up with a lot of enthusiasm and therefore joined the team. When they came back from Michigan, everyone was very impressed with her work ethic and her drive. “She’s really great for the team because she’s got a real positive attitude. I think she was a large part of their success,” Denn said. According to Denn, Sherman was also a very gifted student, always getting involved in the class and asking questions. “She is a very good student. I only had her in one class but she was quite accomplished in what she was doing and I always liked having her in my class,” Denn said. “She asked a lot of questions and was really interested in understanding the material, not just knowing it on the surface.” Denn said every one of these organizations has a core group of students, around four or five, who are the ones that really make things like the HPV happen. Sherman is one of those students for SIUE. “[Sherman] right away went into being part of those core students, she took it on and said ‘I’ll do it’,” Denn said. “Not much earlier, she wasn’t on the team and then all of the sudden she was on the team and she was sort of a central part of it.” Senior Thomas Giacobbe of Glen Carbon, Illinois has a similar experience with

Sherman. He is majoring in mechanical engineering and has taken many classes with Sherman. He said he and Sherman have been good friends since their freshman year. “We had a physics course together, and she sat in the middle of the class. She was very happy and bubbly all the time,” Giacobbe said. “We found out that we had honors courses together, and she really liked to include everybody. She’s very smart, and she was always at the top of the class.” In a friend group he and Sherman formed with classmates, Sherman was the one who helped everyone, Giacobbe said.
They always tried working together and leaned on each other for help and advice. He said Sherman was one of the top students in the department, and she helped him throughout the classes they shared. “She’s a leader and a very talented individual, and there’s no doubt in my mind that she’ll be a rockstar in anything that she does,” Giacobbe said. Sherman said she recently accepted a job working at Caterpillar as a supply chain engineer. She said she will be in the division of inventory management and said she hopes to work her way up from there. For more information on Sherman and her team’s project, visit the SIUE website.

THC traces found in CBD oil, other discoveries presented by graduating pharmacy students DAMIAN MORRIS reporter
The School of Pharmacy’s graduating seniors usually present their senior projects to the general public this time of year. COVID-19 forced them to present online. Every graduating pharmacy major is required to present their Improving Patient Care for Tomorrow projects. Senior pharmacy major Brian Blevins, from Belleville, Illinois, said while he liked being able to have more detailed notes in front of him during his online presentation, it wasn’t his preferred mode. “I would have preferred to do it in person because you can interact with more people whereas online you’re only interacting with whoever’s in the block with you, which, in my case, was 22,” Blevins said. “But when you’re doing poster day on campus there could be hundreds of people that might come by and look at your poster and you might give your little presentation to.” Senior pharmacy major Vincent Chau, from Peoria, Illinois, said the largest difference in presenting the projects online instead of in person is the lack of
participation from people seeing the posters and stopping by. “I would say the online version is a little bit more structured because we had a group that we were going to be in ahead of time, we knew exactly when we were going to present, and we only had to present once and then answer questions,” Chau said. “In person we are just set up next to our poster and [there are] bystanders that walk by and ask us questions and we have to give our spiel about our project multiple times.” For his ImPaCT project, Blevins analyzed CBD oil and determined how much THC was in commercially available CBD oil products. Many companies claim to have products that are THC free or contain less than 0.3 percent THC by weight. He said the results of his study showed that most of the products came close to the THC content they claimed to have, although some of the others showed large discrepancies in what they claimed versus what they actually had. Blevins said one example was a product that supposedly had 16 milligrams per serving, but actually had 3 to 4 milligrams. He said every product he tested had at
least some trace of THC. “The reason why this is significant is because there was enough that, if someone were to take a serving and then they had to go do a drug test within the next 72 hours, then it’s possible they could fail the drug test,” Blevins said. Senior pharmacy major Alanna Pomes, from Champaign–Urbana, Illinois, was another student who presented her project. Pomes said she read several articles to examine whether publication biases lead to pharmaceutical companies being framed in a more posistive light than they would otherwise be viewed. “I thought this was important because, as pharmacists, if we want to recommend a drug to a provider, to a patient, or make any kind of recommendations we need to have good data to begin with,” Pomes said. Pomes found something different than she expected. “An interesting thing that I noticed was that studies that had received industry funding actually tended to be more negative than the rest,” Pomes said. It’s at about a cumulative rate of about 30
percent, whereas studies that received no funding at all were about 52 percent. That was a difference that was seen between both the randomized control trials and the observational studies.” In his project, Chau compared the medical outcomes of two different treatments for heart failure. He used health records to aid in his research. “What we first did was run a report of patients that had received an ACE inhibitor, which is a class of drugs, compared to Entresto, which is a name brand medication,” Chau said. “We ran a report to get a list of patients that had received the ACE inhibitor in the hospital and a list of patients who received Entresto in the hospital, and then from that I looked into each chart for each patient to collect my data.” Chau said he wanted to tweak some large clinical studies he had seen testing the same thing. He said unlike the large trials, he did not find any difference between the two drugs, although he said this could be due to him having a much smaller sample size to the clinical trial. Spring 2020 graduate balances college life with campaign manager duties NICOLE BOYD copy editor
On top of the typical responsibilities of being a college student, Myles Nelson is the campaign manager for a U.S. congressman. Nelson, a senior political science major from Collinsville, Illinois, will be graduating this weekend, but he has already begun his work in politics. He said he started by volunteering for U.S. Rep. Mike Bost of Murphysboro, R-Ill. “I started a few cycles back as a volunteer, knocking on doors for Congressman Bost [and] making phone calls … [I] was in charge of Madison County operations last cycle in 2018, and then this past year I was in charge of his petition drive to get him on the ballot,” Nelson said. “And then after my years of being with him, they asked me to be campaign manager.” Nelson said it’s an honor to work for Bost, and that his experience at SIUE gave him the skills he needed to succeed. “My experience taking classes with the department and other experience that I’ve gained at SIUE has certainly helped me to be in the position I am and to succeed at it,” Nelson said.
Balancing his duties as campaign manager with schoolwork requires organization and time management, Nelson said. “You just have to be organized, that’s the biggest thing. Time management, you have to know what you’re doing, when you’re doing and you have to be on time doing it,” Nelson said. “And you have to make both of them an equal priority. You know, obviously my schoolwork is very important but so is my profession.” Noah Poole, a senior political science major from Rochester, Illinois, is Nelson’s friend, and also works for him as an intern. “With Myles, I think he’s always been a straightforward person, but always able to listen at the same time. He kind of makes the work for you easier, because if you’re having any issues, you always know you can go to him, and he’ll lead you in the right way,” Poole said. According to Nelson, after graduating, his efforts will be focused on the campaign. “I’m focused on ensuring that Congressman Bost wins his reelection. In politics, you have a good idea of where you want to end up, but as far as the road, the road getting there, it can twist and turn. I would love to stay with Congressman
Bost, but of course I don’t know what the future holds, and I don’t want to speculate on that,” Nelson said. Ken Moffett, chair of the political science department and a political science professor, said Nelson is an analytical student, which has contributed to his success. “[He’s] analytically focused, very passionate about politics, and uses his analytical skills in a way to help out some of his political ambitions in some of the different things that he has done away from campus,” Moffett said. Nelson also served as the 2019 President of the College Republicans. In that time, the College Republicans sued the university regarding its free speech policy, which restricted protests to the area around the rock. According to Moffett, Nelson was a driving force behind the free speech lawsuit. “The College Republicans, and Myles was one of the people involved with this, sued the university, stating basically that its free speech policy was unconstitutional. It was settled out of court and a new free speech policy was written, which was much more expensive and much broader than the old one,” Moffett said. “Myles had a big part in that. And in that respect,

if you want to think about it this way, he expanded civil liberties for students on campus.” Poole said apart from his academic or professional work, Nelson is a generous friend. “He’s always been, ‘Hey, I can come pick you up,’ if we’re going somewhere, or I mean as a college student, I’m not always working, so a pretty good example was, ‘Hey, let’s go do this,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, no, I can’t,’ … and he’s like, ‘Hey, I’ll cover it,’” Poole said. Graduating theater and dance students remain ambitious when jobs shut down ISOBEL ABBOTT- DETHROW reporter
Due to the pandemic’s impact, many graduates now face an uncertain future. Theater and dance majors are no exception. Practices and preparations for the upcoming season have been canceled, along with prospective jobs for seniors entering their job fields. Graduating senior Sarah Lantsberger, of Columbia, Illinois, said the pandemic postponed her job working for a professional theater company. “They had to cancel their whole season,” Lantsberger said. “The opportunities have drastically changed. There’s really not anything to do in the field currently.” Once the pandemic is over, Lantsberger said she has plans to build up her resume and get right back into the field. Graduating senior Joe Simpson, of Chi-
cago, said he plans on starting at a theater company and doing commercial work when opportunities rise up again. “I want to work my way up to hopefully doing TV spots,” Simpson said. “I want to go to California and make my way out there.” The graduating tech and design side of SIUE’s theater and dance program have also seen opportunities go away because of the pandemic. According to senior theater design major Laila Alvarado, of St. Louis, she had jobs lined up to work as a costume dresser for local companies, most of which were canceled. “I was also going to have my first professional design opportunity as a costume and set designer for Upstream Theater [in St. Louis],” Al-
varado said. “That got postponed until the fall.” Despite the cancellations, Lantsberger, Simpson and Alvarado still hold hope for the future. The sudden change of plans COVID-19 impacted on these theater and dance seniors’ careers cannot override the years and experiences with SIUE they have used to build up their resumes and put them back to work. According to Lantsberger, her senior project consisted of directing a full show. “It is called ‘The Trail to Oregon!’,” Lantsberger said. “It’s a comedic musical produced by Team StarKid. We started in January and our show was actually supposed to go on the week after spring break. As of now, it is postponed. We’re still gonna try to put it
on when things calm down.” Simpson said he was supposed to work on costuming for Lantsberger’s senior project. “I’ve gotten to know a lot of people in the theater community,” Simpson said. “Not only in the SIUE community, but also in Chicago. I’ve also met people making their living in California. My fraternity, Delta Lambda Phi, has let me meet some amazing people and given me the chance to travel.” At SIUE, along with gaining design scholarships, Alvarado was able to costume and set design for school productions, while making connections across the St. Louis area and working outside of the university. “Getting to work in St. Louis has been the most helpful thing,” Alvarado said. “I had my first job at Upstream and met one of the actors there; they got me my second job working somewhere else.”

Much-needed SIUE nursing graduates to enter the workforce of hospital care MATT BARTELS reporter
SIUE nursing graduates look to make a difference in their field after graduation, and it couldn’t have come at a better time: right in the middle of a pandemic. Jessie Hammel, from Carlyle, Illinois, is graduating with her bachelor’s in nursing and is one of the many students at SIUE hoping to help end this pandemic. After graduation, Hammel plans to work with Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, in the cardiovascular intensive care unit. “I’m hoping to work there for about two years and then go back to SIUE to get my Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist degree,” Hammel said. Hammel said graduation is even more nerve-racking than before due to the current situation, but believes that with the help of the veteran nurses and doctors, she will be fine.
“I was kinda nervous just to start my job as a nurse with all of this going on,” Hammel said. “But from my experience in my job, the nurse managers are doing the best they can, making sure we are staying safe and that we know the proper procedures. So I’m confident where I’m going to work.” Another nursing graduate is senior Briana Van Kleef, from Greenville, Illinois, who, after graduation, plans to work with Mercy Hospital as well. But Van Kleef is going to be working in the Transitional Care Unit, instead of the cardiovascular ICU. Van Kleef thinks that going into the nursing field will be a challenge, but it will be a welcome one. “Entering the workforce is a challenge. You just have to step up to a bigger challenge now,” Van Kleef said. “I just feel grateful that I get to experience this because even the nurses that have been there for 20 years haven’t seen anything like
this, so we are kind of on an even playing field.” Van Kleef said she is ready to go and work with Mercy Hospital. She already knows Mercy pretty well because she has taken her clinical there and plans to start her career in mid-June. Senior Molly Rogers, from Moline, Illinois, is also graduating at the end of the spring semester with a bachelor’s in nursing. She said during her online courses this semester, her professors sent her and her classmates research articles regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. “We’ve gotten a lot of research articles for us to discuss during our clinical times focusing on how to prepare mentally and in the nursing aspect on how to handle patients,” Rogers said. “It’s always hard to talk about and discuss things rather than going into the field and actually dealing with it.” Rogers said the clinicals SIUE have
offered to the nursing students has been great in helping the students get accommodated to the things they may see on the job. “We’ve been in clinical for the past two years so the diversity of the patients we’ve seen through clinical has definitely helped my nerves with entering the workforce,” Rogers said. Both Hammel and Van Kleef also said how impactful the courses at SIUE have been. “I love the SIUE nursing program. I can’t say enough good things about it. Their curriculum is designed to prepare you for the clinical situations, not just textbook situations,” Hammel said. With Rogers, Hammel, Van Kleef and many other SIUE nursing students ready to take their first official steps into the workforce, the healthcare system is about to receive an influx of essential workers.
