Determined production students ready to begin a rerun on SIUE’s Film Society
BRUCE DARNELL reporterFrom in-depth analysis to their own productions, the new Film Society intends to return as strong as ever.
Biksh Pokharel is a master’s student studying mass communications. He is also the president of the Film Society.
“I’m interested in all the processes of filmmaking,” Pokharel said. “During my undergrad, I was involved in many filmmaking projects and found that, as a human being and [having] to grow as a part of society, stories are very important. We learn and grow by looking at the stories from different people.”
From his time during projects, Pokharel discovered that he wanted to be a storyteller. He views film as a good medium for the art of storytelling, which is how he originally found the Film Society.
“After joining the master’s program at SIUE, I came to know about this Film Society,” Pokharel said. “I had my interests aligned with this society, so I think we have to restart the Film Society and get the/ work done.”
Bipin Banjara, a mass communications major, also shares similar views to Pokharel about filmmaking.
“During my undergrad, we worked on different documentaries and sent them to different film festivals,” Banjara said. “Film
is a good medium of telling stories and learning culture, and many students are interested in film but there’s no good place for students to talk about and watch films.”
The Film Society plans on hosting sessions where students can watch various films. During these sessions, students will discuss in-depth all the processes that went into making those films, such as camerawork, scriptwriting and more.
“What we’re planning to do is look at films from different backgrounds and different countries,” Pokharel said. “We’ll see it through a different lens. How the camerawork is done, how the story is, how the actors portray different characters… all the aspects that make a good film. We need to do that kind of learning in the Film Society.”
According to Banjara, the Film Society has plans to create their own short films in the future using the techniques they learn in the meetings.
“They can come with their idea,” Banjara said. “If possible, we can work with them to make a film. Once a month we can look at the film and discuss all of the aspects of it.”
Musonda Kapatamoyo, chair of the mass communications department, fully encourages the students’ effort to restart the Film Society.
“We have four students that are very gung-ho about it,” Kapatamoyo said. “The four of them decided to restart this thing… they’ll basically be doing the same thing that was done in the past as far as requesting films from directors, bringing them here and then discussing every aspect of it ––not just watching it and enjoying it, but going deeper into how it was made.”
When the previous president and founder Rahul Menon graduated, the film society became dormant. Pokharel has a plan to keep this from happening again.
“I came to know about the Film Society last semester,” Pokharel said. “I didn’t have a good team, I wasn’t open enough to get differ-
ent people which could have helped the society keep going. Now, I feel like I have a good team, and a good team doesn’t just create a good working atmosphere, it also creates a good leader. I think that even after the president graduates, there will still be a team that will decide the leader themselves. I don’t think it will stop working after a semester.”
ent people which could helped ety keep going. Now, I team, and a good team good working atmoa good leader. I think nications Department is ciety with snacks and pizza
The Mass Communications Department is ready to aid the Film Society with snacks and pizza during their meetings.
“I’ve pledged to continue supporting them with snacks,” Kapatamoyo said. “I think it’s important to create that type of environment for the students.”
“I’ve pledged to consnacks,” Kapatamoyo said. “I create that type of environment the The Film Society is open to in or filmmaking. Ideas for how to keep the also welcomed by any and all. They
The Film Society is open to anyone that is interested in film or filmmaking. Ideas for how to keep the Film Society moving forward are also welcomed by any and all. They can be contacted through their president at bpokhar@siue.

Environmental sciences graduate studies bullheaded catfish
LIV KRAUS reporterIn addition to studying bullheaded catfish and climate change, Devin Moore was able to travel to Wisconsin to intern at the National Park Service in Wisconsin.
Moore, an environmental sciences major from Washington, Illinois, said his internship at the National Park Service included working in the interpretation division and helping visitors. He said the park contained a river that divided Minnesota and Wisconsin and they would get to go on the St. Croix river.
“About once a week or every other week, we would actually get kayaks and we would kayak at a certain section of river just to meet and interact with people,” Moore said.
Moore said his favorite part of his experience at the National Park Service was interacting with the other rangers and being able to work outside. He said the rangers sometimes did educational pro-
grams for schools where they would show them different insects they collected.
“We would just introduce them to all the different insects and invertebrates that live in the river and live in the lakes and streams and ponds and stuff to try and show them there’s more than just a fish in the rivers,” Moore said.
Department Chair of Environmental Studies Nicholas Guehlstorf said Moore’s engagement and participation is what made him stand out from other students.
“I think oftentimes, his environmental activism drives a lot of his studies and I think that helps the whole classroom, it changes the learning environment because not everyone has the same passion for the environment,” Guehlstorf said.
Moore said he was drawn to environmental sciences because he finds the effect humans have on the environment to be interesting. He said he enjoys the hands-on experience where he gets the opportunity to move around outside.
Guehlstorf said Moore shows interest
in natural resource management including water-stressed areas in the country, loss of forest land and more.
“It’s that combination of, you know, a really good intellect and an overwhelming amount of passion that he has that I think just makes for a really good sort of combination of a student and one that can actually provide for a work environment,” Guehlstorf said.
Moore has been working on a research paper about the public trust doctrine and how it can be applied to climate change.
“I’m looking at how we can use the government’s obligation to defend natural resources for the public to try and mitigate the effects of climate change,” Moore said.
Moore is also working on a research project about morphology in Bullhead catfish to see if there’s some relationship
between the change in the way their bodies are shaped to wider heads and more protruded skull and jaw and changes in diet.
“Currently, we’ve actually seen that there is really no morphological change in the Bullheads,” Moore said. “As they grow, they stay the same proportions throughout their entire lifespan. That’s also interesting, because then their diets just completely depend on their length and size.”
Moore said the study involved stretching the bullhead catfish onto a table using dowel rods to get them as straight as possible to take measurements. He said he had to extract the intestines and stomach to look for identifiable contents like invertebrates, fish bones or fish flesh.
“It was a lot of hours of standing around taking pictures of fish and then extracting,” Moore said.

2022 Senior Campaign offers fun way to donate to the university
ed goes to funding scholarships for future students.
As the semester winds down and students count the days until winter break, seniors graduating this December are beginning to mark each of their “lasts” at SIUE. The last research paper, the last exam, the last club meeting, the last time they sprint to their car praying to beat parking services — the list goes on. But graduation season isn’t just a time for “lasts,” it’s also a time for firsts.
The SIUE Alumni Association has officially kicked off one of their biggest yearly traditions. The Senior Campaign encourages upcoming graduates to make their first financial contribution to SIUE by donating $20.22 to commemorate their graduation year.
Students that participate in the campaign receive a red, white and black philanthropy cord to wear at the commencement ceremony with their regalia. According to the Alumni Association’s Senior Director of Constituent Relations and Special Projects, Cathy Taylor, every dollar donat-
“The Senior Campaign is exciting because it is a student-centered giving campaign [that] enables seniors to make an impact for future cougars,” Taylor said. “One hundred percent of Senior Campaign gifts go to the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund where awards of varying size are given out each year. This year, $20,000 has been awarded to deserving students.”
Kendyl Santos graduated last spring, and is now a first grade teacher while also working on getting her masters degree in curriculum and instruction at SIUE.
Santos donated to the Senior Campaign back in May leading up to her own graduation, and she felt it was an important and meaningful way to round out her undergraduate experience.
“I was raised in a family that has always really valued philanthropy. I mean, from the time I could walk we were going to breast cancer walks,” Santos said. “So when my mom saw the email go out about the Senior Campaign, she called me and was like, ‘This is a great opportunity. I think this would be a really fun
way for you to give back after four years and you get to wear a cord symbolizing that donation at graduation.’”
Santos was moved to be able to contribute to a future student’s academic opportunities, even if her individual donation seemed small in itself. After all, it was through scholarships she personally received through similar opportunities that made her college experience possible, and to give another student that chance was deeply personal and full-circle for her.
“I feel eternally grateful to have had not only the opportunity to go to college, but also have the opportunity to graduate debt free because of the scholarships I was given,” Santos said. “If it wasn’t for these scholarships, I would have been commuting from home instead of being able to live in Edwardsville. I wouldn’t have gotten the education I did, or the advantage of not having to stress about paying off debt after. It also made me want to strive harder to get better grades too. It definitely pushed me to not only be my best personally, but my best academically.”
Alumni Association Presi-
dent Andrew Ravanelli, says that Santos’s story is exactly why the Senior Campaign is such an important tradition on campus.
“Graduating seniors recognize how important it is to have the resources and support they receive from the time when they get their SIUE acceptance letter all the way to walking across the stage at graduation,” Ravanelli said. “Any opportunity that we have as members of the community and alumni to help those students is an opportunity to help fulfill somebody’s dream. The Senior Campaign is their opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students who are on the same journey that they just were.”
Students can participate in the Senior Campaign by donating online or in person at the Always a Cougar Graduation Celebration. Any senior that donates $20.22 can pick up their philanthropy cords at the event from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 in the Meridian Ballroom. The celebration will include a complimentary champagne toast to the Class of 2022.
“This campaign is about leveraging the collective influence
of the senior class to make a big difference in the lives of current and future students. $20 might not feel like a lot of money to give back, but if every graduating senior gives $20, that has the opportunity to help a lot of students,” Ravanelli said.
“This is the first step at creating a legacy. When you walk across that stage, it is the culmination of an enormity of effort and dedication that you’ve put in. By giving back to help current students get to that point and proudly wearing your cords that day, you’re showing them that you believe in them and you know how important their journey is,” Ravanelli said.
Regardless of if students decide to participate in the Senior Campaign, Taylor says the Alumni Association is proud to congratulate graduating seniors on their accomplishments, and is excited to continue to support the new class of alumni in their future endeavors.
“Our young alumni are some of the most involved, passionate and dedicated advocates for SIUE and our community; I’m excited to see what the future holds for the class of 2022,” Taylor said.
The overarching theme in Frog and Toad outfits is the autumnal colors — browns, greens, oranges and reds. If you keep consistent within that realm, the outfit will work no ma er what.
The Frog and Toads Series by writer and illustrator Arnold Lobel is a classic children’s book series that’s stood the test of time. With the weather ge ing colder and colder, it’s the perfect time to bundle up like they did. Here’s The Alestle’s guide to emulating this impeccable style.
Frog and Toad dressed with style in mind, but also functionality. To dress like them, you need layers to give the outfit depth and to give yourself warmth.
The key to a Frog and Toad-inspired outfit is non-denim pants. This can be anything from corduroys, to plaid pants, to even something with a print. Again, the key is muted, autumnal colors that make you feel cozy and comfortable.
After you’ve got the core of the outfit on, feel free to accessorize with whatever you have around — scarves, hats, boots, gloves or anything that makes you feel like a classy amphibian.
