Edwardsville native shows character on and off the court DALTON BROWN copy editor
Matt Gregor, a senior business administration major, from Edwardsville, plays several different roles in the School of Business — but when Gregor isn’t working as a research assistant or supplemental instruction leader, he can be found on the pickleball court. Riza Demirer, a professor in the Department of Economics and Finance, said Gregor’s work as a supplemental instruction leader had a profound impact on one particular family. “One day, I received an email from the grandma of a student with special needs, and [she was] thanking me for arranging Matt as a supplemental instructor, because without his help, [her] grandson would not be able to pass that course,” Demirer said. Demirer said Gregor’s generosity extends outside the
classroom as well. According to Demirer, the Department of Economics and Finance gives annual awards to its highest-performing students; when Gregor learned he would receive money as part of his reward, Demirer said Gregor’s response was selfless. “He emailed back to me, ‘Dr. Demirer ... I want to decline it, because I really don’t need the money, so you better give the money and the award to somebody else who needs it.’ And I’m like, ‘Look, Matt, it’s something you deserve; you’re our best student’ … That tells you about his personality. Not everybody does something like that,” Demirer said. According to Timothy Schoenecker, dean of the School of Business, Gregor was selected to speak on the school’s behalf based on his wide array of qualifications. “He really hit all the marks … he has just a very excellent
GPA. At the same time, he’s been involved in a couple activities outside the classroom,” Schoenecker said. “He also was a finance intern at WorldWide Technologies … so that sort of combination of academic excellence, good work experience and then showing that he cares about his fellow students made him, we thought, just an excellent choice for this.” When Gregor isn’t involved in one of his many business roles, he said he likes to play pickleball, a sport he discovered after continually losing tennis matches to his girlfriend, sophomore biomedical science major Natalie Karibian. Karibian went fifth in state her senior year at Edwardsville High School. “She’d just kill me every single time. I didn’t win a single game, I think,” Gregor said. “And so one day we were playing together, and she was almost getting annoyed that I was so bad
… and a couple people came up to us and said, ‘We have pickleball here, could you move down a court?’” Gregor said he then noticed more people showing up to play pickleball and decided to talk to them about it. “They asked me if I wanted to play, and so I was like, ‘Sure, yeah.’ I had never done it. I started playing then, and then they were like, ‘We have a club, we play about every day .. and so that’s kind of how I got into it,” Gregor said. Even though Gregor is from Edwardsville, it wasn’t until he got into the sport that he realized Plummer Park has 12 dedicated pickleball courts. There are also multi-level out-of-state tournaments; those competing in pro-level tournaments can win cash prizes, while those competing in lower-level tournaments compete for gold, silver and bronze medals.

“You play at Plummer Park mostly, and then you can play tournaments,” Gregor said. “I played one tournament in [Festus, Missouri] a couple months ago … basically, you just sign up with a partner and you go play and hope to win gold [medals].”
Making a difference after following an unknown path
| Photo courtesy of Paulina Fuhrmann LILY SCHNIEDERS reporter
Paulina Fuhrmann, a senior political science major, from Collinsville, Illinois never imagined going to college until her mom
told her she was too smart not to try. Now Fuhrmann is graduating, and was chosen to speak for the College of Arts and Sciences at commencement. Fuhrmann said she struggled in high school which discouraged her from going to college after graduation, but changed her mind after a conversation with her mother. During her senior year of high school, Fuhrmann was not sure which career path she wanted to follow. Eventually, she became interested in politics “I worked on a campaign for a congressional representative, and at that time I didn’t know what I wanted to do and really got interested in the political atmosphere and interested in politics, and that is when I decided I wanted to go to school for political science,” Fuhrmann said. She started taking online aptitude quizzes to help decide
what her career should be. Most of the time, the results of the quizzes were a lawyer or an attorney. “I started to get really fascinated by the law. I was also fascinated by what attorneys are able to do and all the things that attorneys are good at or have to do that I really excelled in, like reading, writing and communication,“ Fuhrmann said. Once she got into college, her mindset changed when it came to her academics. She focused on her studies and even joined Alpha Sigma Tau, a sorority at SIUE. She also served on the Panhellenic Council, which oversees five sororities on campus, for three years. She was involved with the Political Science Association and has been a member of a couple of other organizations here at SIUE. All of these accomplishments led her to be considered to represent the College of Arts
and Sciences as the student commencement speaker. Kevin Leonard, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said Fuhrmann had all the requirements and the ability to fill this role as the speaker for the College of Arts and Sciences. “We looked favorably on Paulina’s academic record and her two years of serving on the Panhellenic Council. Her letters of recommendation praised Paulina for being a critical thinker and an outstanding communicator, so we felt that Paulina was an excellent choice for the CAS student commencement speaker,” Leonard said. Leonard wasn’t the only one who spoke highly of Fuhrmann. Political science professor Andrew Theising said he always had positive experiences with Fuhrmann as a student. “She is a very diligent student and one of the kindest students that professors really en-
joyed having in class. She is there and engaged, asking good questions and helps answer questions and keeps the discussion going ... so I always enjoyed having Paulina in class,” Theising said. Political Science Department Chair Ken Moffett said Fuhrmann has many characteristics of a good student. “I had her as a student and she epitomizes some of the things that I like to see in excellent students as a faculty member. So that ranges from anything from regularly coming to class and being really engaged and asking really smart questions, and as difficulties come up or issues come up in the course, she reaches out about them and she is very proactive in terms of how she goes about her work,” Moffett said. Although she may not have originally planned on going to college, Fuhrmann now plans on going to law school in Fall 2021.

Chi Epsilon president promises more accomplishments to come as graduate student
| Photo courtesy of Ashley Spain KRISTINA JOHNSON reporter
Senior civil engineering stu-
dent Ashley Spain has a lot to be thankful for as she graduates at the end of this semester, after leaving her mark on the civil engineering program. Spain, a Chicago native, began the hunt for her future college and came across an unlikely contender through her father. He had taken training courses through the Environmental Resources Training Center at SIUE and suggested she take a look into their engineering program. “I ended up touring the campus and falling in love with the area and the size of the school,” Spain said. “I didn’t even know SIUE existed until my dad pointed me here.” Since arriving in 2016, she has kept herself involved with plenty of activities on and off
campus. This has led her to become the current president of Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honors society on campus. One of Chi Epsilon’s goals is to help students prepare for their fundamentals of engineering exam, or FE exam. “All the civil engineers should take it. It depends on the board of the state they work in,” Ali Alsamir, former vice president of Chi Epsilon, said. “They take their degree from their university, after that they need to get their license to work in that state.” As president, one of Spain’s duties was to coordinate group work for review sessions for the FE exam. All members were in charge of contacting a professor who was willing to review infor-
mation for students taking the exam. Alsamir said working with Spain during their year and a half in the organization’s leadership was a pleasure. “She is so polite. She is such a respectful woman,” Alsamir said. “She is one of those students who is very smart or else she wouldn’t get invited into this society.” Spain said staying involved on campus and giving back to the engineering program are important to her. “Being involved in the engineering building helped shape the future engineer I will eventually become,” Spain said. Being chosen as graduate speaker for the School of Engineering tops off her lists of ac-
page 5
complishments, which include academic honors. Cem Karacal, the dean of the School of Engineering, said when picking the perfect fit for representing the school, Spain’s name was on the top of the list. “First of all, she is [a] very academically strong student,” Karacal said. “Secondly, her role in Chi Epsilon honors society [is] definitely remarkable activity. She is hardworking.” Her hard work will follow her into her next step within SIUE’s accelerated environmental engineering graduate program. “I would definitely ask her to keep up the good work and keep in touch, because many of the high-achieving students end up in leadership positions,” Karacal said.
An Australian student pushes through the pandemic GABRIEL BRADY reporter
Lara Tupper, a senior in nutrition, from the Gold Coast, Australia, was chosen to be the speaker for the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior — despite COVID-19 sending her back to her home country. For Tupper, the American college experience was more appealing than the one she would have received in Australia. She said American college focused more on community and sports, which interested Tupper because of her love for tennis. “When I originally came to America, I went for the tennis experience. College in the U.S. is different than it is in Australia. Here [in Australia], we usually live at home and commute daily. It’s more community-based in the U.S., and sports are a way bigger thing in the U.S.,” Tupper said. “Like, we don’t do
scholarships for that over here. To experience a new culture and play the sport I love sounded like a good idea.” Tupper played on the SIUE tennis team while she was here. Nutrition instructor Cindi Inman had Tupper in several classes and knows her well. Inman said Tupper did a great job juggling both being an extraordinary student and being an athlete. “She focused on time management well,” Inman said. “I was a student-athlete when I was in college, too, and I can certainly say her time management was way better than mine.” Tupper said her secret was figuring out what work was most important, and doing that first. “You just have to prioritize what you want to achieve and also have a bit of a social life,” Tupper said. “It made me busy, but I prefer to be busy, and as long as you prioritize, it’s okay.” Assistant Professor of Nutrition Kathy Mora said Tupper is
not only a very friendly person, but she is also modest. “She is probably one of the friendliest people. I don’t think she could even cut anyone off in traffic, but at the same time, she’s so humble,” Mora said. “I’d have to ask her if she won the tennis games when she’d be in class. I’d say ‘Did you guys have a good game?’ and she’d say ‘Oh yeah, we won by a lot.’ She’d never really talk or brag about it unless someone asked.” Mora was close with Tupper as well; Tupper worked on Mora’s research project as an URCA assistant. Mora said the project focused on teaching high school athletes about the importance of nutrition through social media. Mora said Tupper brought her positive personality to the project and she was a great part of the team. “I’ve written recommendations for her, and I’ve had to write on her for URCA,” Mora said. “I tried to nominate her
for URCA assistant awards. I feel like she’s a colleague and a friend, frankly. She’s more than a student. We’re peers and colleagues.” According to Inman, Tupper was an exceptional student in her classes, even after the COVID-19 pandemic forced Tupper to return to Australia. “I’ve had her a lot in the past, but I also have her now this semester. Since he’s had to stay in Australia, I record the Zoom classes that I do with other students, and I post them for her, because it would be like four in the morning for her when we meet,” Inman said. “I suppose she watches them right when she gets up in the morning because she’ll email me pretty quick if it’s not up on time.” Tupper said she tries to be positive in most aspects of her life, and she was very appreciative of her instructors being accommodating to her. “I guess I try to be positive

in most areas of my life. I feel like being positive is the best outlook. Complaining is never the best,” Tupper said “I really loved the nutrition faculty [at SIUE]. They had a great impact on me and they were kind and caring to the situation of international students. At least, they were to me.”
Graduate student will continue fighting COVID-19 after earning doctorate degree JOHN MCGOWAN reporter

This semester’s speaker for the graduate school is Caitlin Phelan, of Dupo, Illinois, who will be graduating from the Doctor of Nursing practice program. Phelan has worked multiple jobs, including working at the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Healthcare System. Phelan said the COVID-19 pandemic turned her life at work upside down. “It has been an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. When the pandemic began, my role as a nurse practitioner in occupational health changed overnight … When COVID arrived, my job quickly shifted toward the field of public
health, with an emphasis on surveillance, contact tracing and case management,” Phelan said. She will also soon be a part of distributing the vaccine. “This week, my team will begin the process of administering the COVID vaccine to our employees. I consider it an honor to be a part of this historic milestone in the fight against COVID-19,” Phelan said. Before her time fighting the pandemic, Phelan worked multiple jobs at SIUE. She said she has a strong relationship with the university after spending so much time with it. “I feel like I’ve grown up at SIUE in a way, because I’ve completed three degrees there and have worked in a variety of roles there over the past 17 years, from
working as a student manager at the MUC Starbucks to working as a graduate assistant to eventually teaching for the [Family Nurse Practitioner] program,” Phelan said. Nursing instructor Bernadette Sobczak co-taught a class with Phelan. Sobczak said she was happy with Phelan’s performance. “She definitely had some good feedback that she provided to students. She was always really good and prompt on getting back to them on issues … She was a great faculty member when she worked for us,” Sobczak said. Another faculty member at SIUE, Nursing Professor Emerita Jacquelyn Clement, said being Phelan’s research chair was a positive experience.
“I found her to be delightful. She was very cooperative, very professional. I could tell she wanted very badly to do the very best job she could. She was stretched very thin, in terms of she had a lot of responsibilities on her plate, and she was committed to doing an excellent job on all of them,” Clement said. Phelan said after graduating, she plans to stay in her current job, but she is also excited to see what the future holds. “I am a family nurse practitioner and currently practice in occupational health, which I will continue to do … I believe that [the Doctor of Nursing Practice program] has helped me prepare for a future as a leader in health care, and I look forward to seeing what comes next,” Phelan said.
