Associate Dean for the School of Engineering and Associate Professor of Construction Chris Gordon’s speech at commencement will encourage graduates to continue to make their own path after they leave SIUE. Gordon will be speaking during both graduation ceremonies in the Vadalabene Center on Saturday. “I’d like to challenge our graduates to continue to seek experiences that will help grow their sense and understanding of the world and help them to shape the changing world,” Gordon said. As this year’s recipient of the Alumni Association’s Great Teacher Award, Gordon was asked to speak at commencement. Junior construction management major and Constructor’s Club President Andrew Westerhold, of Edwardsville, has been a student of Gordon’s before. He said Gordon’s superior knowledge about construction is part of why he fits the criteria for the award. “He’s very intelligent of what he does. He knows a lot about the construction industry, and I would say by being very informed and intelligent, he always makes sure to pass that information along to the students in class,” Westerhold said. In addition to his vast knowledge,

milestone and be at this point in their life and have so much opportunity ahead of them,” Gordon said. Gordon has been with SIUE since 2007. He was the School of Engineering Interim Associate Dean from January 2012 to August 2016 and the Department of Construction Chair from July 2009 to August 2016. This is his first year as the School of Engineering Associate Dean. In addition, Gordon has taught many classes within the construction department including Introduction to Construction, Construction Materials and Methods, Computer Applications in Construction and Construction Management. Nursing student reminds class of new beginnings with humor, wisdom

Senior nursing major Joseph Reddy, of St. Charles, Mo., was chosen to be a speaker at the Fall 2016 commencement ceremonies Saturday, Dec. 17, in the Vadalabene Center. He wants to focus on the new beginning that he and his peers will soon experience after graduation. According to Reddy, he received an email from the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate and Alternative Programs, Roberta Harrison, that said to contact her immediately. “At that point all I could think was, ‘What did I do now?’” Reddy said. “Then she asked me if I would be the speaker and I thought, ‘How could I refuse?’” The next step in the process was to gather a series of letters of recommendations from Associate Professor Chris Durbin and Assistant Professor Debra Jenkins in the School of Nursing. Reddy said he then had to turn in the letters, a resume, a list of who he would be bringing the day of and his speech by Dec. 11 to Marketing Specialist for Events Daniel Frierdich. Reddy said he is preparing his speech
to reflect his sense of humor in a professional way. “The goal of my speech is try and give a few words of wisdom. I’ll add a few jokes here and there. This isn’t the end, it’s sort of a new beginning,” Reddy said. “I’ve already been there before. I graduated from Mizzou in 2010 as a biology and health sciences major, with a minor in classical studies.” “Sometimes I feel as if they picked the wrong guy. I think I’m a good student, but not necessarily the best. I found out that Dr. Durbin was the one who recommended me,” Reddy said. “I think that people enjoy my dryer sense of humor with satire and parody.” Jenkins said Reddy has earned it, and that he deserves the honor from what she has noticed both in and outside of class. “Several of the faculty have come into contact with Joseph over the past few years,” Jenkins said. “He knows he’s a strong student, and he is willing to go beyond what’s expected and he is here to prove himself. Whether it is providing to patients or working with management, I know he will act in a professional manner.” Jenkins said he thinks highly of Reddy
as a student and person. “He is a very intense person who recognizes that we all have weaknesses, notices them in himself, and then strives to improve them,” Jenkins said. “He always has a positive attitude. He will be an excellent professional nurse and he will be attentive to his clients’ needs. He has a lot of potential.” Senior nursing major Kathleen Darabaris, of Beecher, is in the Accelerated Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing Program and met Reddy in classes. “He is the nicest person you’ll ever meet,” Darabaris said. “He’s gonna make an amazing nurse. I think they chose him because everyone seems to like him and he’s a really good speaker. He’s a really surprising person because he is so tall and I never knew what to expect, but I know that he has a ton of wonderful things going for him.” Both Darabaris and Jenkins said they have yet to hear a negative comment made about Reddy. The new beginning that Reddy speaks of is in store for him. A new start will come with a new job and later on, a new residence.

Communications major encourages peers to find their niche, seize opportunities
