2017 Spring Commencement Speakers Jordan emphasizes the importance of leadership TRENT STUART Alestle Reporter Senior mass communications major LaShaunda Jordan, of Elgin, will be using her wide range of interests and experiences as a non-traditional student to inspire other graduates during her speech. “I really want people to know that even though it may seem hard and like you can’t do it, there is greatness beyond that struggle, and I think my journey has been a testament to that,” Jordan said. Jordan’s journey has included many accomplishments before and during her time at SIUE. She has been married for 12 years, is a mother of three, a United States Air Force veteran, an activist, an actress, a former Alestle reporter, a photographer and the owner of her own production company. Jordan has also been cancer-free for two years, and she plans on implementing her experience with that struggle into her speech. “I’m a cervical cancer survivor, so I’m going to mention that struggle about making it through that journey while still being in school and raising a family,” Jordan said. While talking about these experiences, Jordan said she hopes others will realize that anyone can be a leader. “It doesn’t matter your age,
freelancing there, doing more video work, and writing some more,” Jordan said. Jordan also has some experience with speeches in this kind of setting. She was one of the commencement speakers when she received her associate’s degree, which inspired her to speak in front of SIUE graduates as well. “I made that one of my main goals to try to work towards, and when the opportunity came up, my academics were where they needed to be, and I applied,” Jordan said. Jordan said she has made some strong bonds at SIUE, but she is ready to move on to the next chapter of her life. “SIUE has been great to me. Frogner inspires graduates to make new experiences MIRANDA LINTZENICH Alestle Reporter With 4,280 miles between SIUE and her hometown of Oslo, Norway, business administration major Mia Frogner has gone the extra mile to obtain an education, play the sport she loves and learn more about American culture. Head Tennis Coach Nick Mueller has coached her for two out of four years, and said she is an amazing teammate and is very organized. “She has put the team first and has put herself second multiple times,” Mueller said. “She kind of sits in the background, and she doesn’t mind that. In that regard, she is very selfless.” Mueller said Frogner had a concussion earlier in the fall, leaving them to send her to the hospital as part of protocol. The seven-hour time difference left her parents frantic; it was 4 or 5 p.m. Central Standard Time here meaning it was about 1 a.m. there when they received the phone call. “Her support group was not here — they were away, so her support group became the people here. It was the friends that she made, coaches, administrators,” Mueller said. “We were there to support her because her family was not here. So it’s completely

Melissa “Missy” Sue Beyer, of St. Peters, Mo., is graduating with her master’s in clinical psychology, and plans to continue her research in trauma at Washington University in St. Louis before pursuing a doctorate degree. When she began preparing for her speech, Beyer said it felt strange writing her commencement speech, as she didn’t want to come across as arrogant, but hopes that she can share some of the insight she has gained from her journey through undergraduate and graduate school. “I tried to write my speech about some of the things I learned along the way … I think everybody has something to contribute. People have their own strengths and their own ways to help the world. One person’s way of helping is completely different than mine, and I think that’s fantastic,” Beyer said. Beyer also said it is important to stay positive throughout the process, continuing to grow while pursuing a degree. “I want people to know that they should never give up. I know that sounds cheesy, but I’ve
know them all really well. They’re all so supportive and helpful, and you can tell they genuinely care,” Beyer said. Beyer’s future plans are already in motion, as she recently accepted a job at WashU. She will be working in a research lab in their psychiatry department looking at medication-resistant depression in older adults. In addition to her work at WashU, Beyer will be putting her focus area of trauma to use as a research assistant at UMSL for Assistant Professor Rachel Wamser-Nanny. Beyer will assist Wamser-Nanny in research pertaining to post-traumatic stress disorder. Graduate student Veronica Delgado, of Atlanta, Ga., will be representing the College of Arts and Sciences as she crosses the stage for her master’s degree in art therapy. In her speech, Delgado plans to discuss her memories during graduate school here and say her final goodbyes to the program. “My speech is about my grandparents’ story of coming to the United States and how immigration has affected my life. I hope to get across that people are more capable than they think they are and can truly get whatever they want in this life,” Delgado said. Delgado said she will miss her classmates and professors most of all. “I think I will miss the people the most,” Delgado said. “I am going to miss all of my art therapy graduate students.” Delgado said some of her best memories are late nights in the Art and Design Building. “I will miss all of the times I was with my classmates, and we stayed up late to get stuff done and stretched our limits,” Delgado said. As she leaves school and transitions into the workforce, Delgado hopes to leave a lasting mark on the people she worked with during her time at SIUE. “I hope that people find community here and use
