ACCESS encourages students to self-advocate beyond graduation
From left to right: Senior sociology major Emma Wilson, senior psychoogy major Chloe Wallace and senior business economics major Safeer Pyarali hold their certificates at ACCESS’s Gateway Graduation last Thursday. | Emma Davis / The Alestle MADISON LAMMERT editor-in-chief
Balloons were blown up, certificates were framed, cameras were flashing and speakers were brought in to honor graduating students registered with the Office for Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support. The event, titled Gateway Graduation, was the brainchild of a former SIUE student who utilized ACCESS, according to Director of ACCESS Dominic Dorsey. After seeing a large amount of student interest, the office began putting together the celebration. Dorsey made it clear the celebration is not to honor the office, but to keep the focus on students who will be walking across the stage this weekend.
“I know that some people may say that them graduating is a testament to what we do, my thought process is it’s a testament to what they’ve done,” Dorsey said. “Disability, diagnosis, learning difference, you know, there are so many students who enter higher education and they don’t make it to this point. That’s why there are celebrations in the first place.” According to Dorsey, SIUE’s proximity to St. Louis, known as the “gateway to the West,” and larger conversations in working with people with disabilities inspired the event being deemed “Gateway Graduation.” “We also talk about how, when it comes to students with disabilities and individuals with disabilities, there’s a significant level of gatekeeping,” Dorsey said in his speech. “There’s always
people who are telling you what you can or cannot have access to or having to ask individuals what you can have access to.” Dorsey also told the graduates they have been equipped to succeed after graduation. “We want to use this as an opportunity to celebrate the fact that you don’t need keys to success or you don’t need keys to ask people for permission,” Dorsey said. “We are allowing you to walk over this threshold into the next phase of your lives with the confidence necessary, [and] the self-advocacy necessary to take the things that are rightfully yours without asking for permission, to go into a world that is going to hopefully embrace you and give you the opportunities and recognize you and affirm you without the need for additional requests, but also [to] say that you’ve been equipped up to this point to [handle] those issues should they arise.” The importance of self-advocacy was a theme throughout the celebration. While ACCESS will not follow students once they graduate, Dorsey said he is confident students who have walked through its doors have learned to be their own advocates. “An invaluable skill that everybody needs to learn is to be able to know how to advocate for themselves and express to others exactly what they need,” Dorsey said. “I think that’s a very specific skill that always needs to be honed, but [going through] the accommodation process in an interactive setting and not just ‘Okay you have this, boom this is what you get,’ but really talking
through it, helps them to be able to understand that process so they can facilitate it themselves when they go to the next phase, because even though other employment agencies don’t have an ACCESS office or a disability support services office or anything along those lines, they do still have the opportunity to ask for an accommodation if necessary and they go to work with their HR department to get it.” However, keynote speaker Wendy Settles, independent living specialist at IMPACT Center for Independent Living and SIUE alumna, recognizes that not all are at the same point on the journey of self-advocacy, and therefore talked about the importance of looking out for others. “I think the biggest thing [the graduates] can do is just make sure when they see something they know isn’t right and when they see inequality and discrimination and ableism that they speak up for themselves and for others,” Settles said. “Self-advocacy is huge — it’s a big deal — but sometimes people haven’t quite found their voice yet.” In her speech, Settles discussed how the road ahead might not be as smooth as it would be for people without disabilities, advocacy is the key to making things better for future generations. “As you’re about to graduate with an actual education, I want to leave you with a quote from Ed Roberts,” Settles said to the graduates. “Ed Roberts said, ‘The biggest lesson in the civil rights movement is the moment you let others speak for you, you will
lose.’ I wish I could flip a switch for you and make things a little bit easier, but I can’t. But I do know that the louder your voice is, the easier things will get for you, and hopefully at some point in your life the obstacles that I’ve faced in the past and that you are facing now will no longer be a problem.” The four students honored were not the only Fall 2019 graduates registered with ACCESS, but were students who wished to be recognized at Thursday’s event. Dorsey estimates there are 31 graduating students who registered with their office. One student who signed up was Safeer Pyarali, who will soon be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business economics. Pyarali said he saw the ability to celebrate as a group as the most important aspect of the event. “I feel like this is also a group that collectively needs to be celebrated, so to me, the short answer is just to have that group celebration,” Pyarali said. “For me, it wasn’t even individually, but working together [and] graduating together. I’m just happy for all four and obviously the many that are going forward.” Dorsey said as long as enough students continue to show interest in the event, future graduates will be honored in the same way. “I don’t want to do things just because it’s the way it has always been done,” Dorsey said. “Let’s be intentional; lets let the students lead; let’s let what’s motivating them and what they value be the reason that we’re doing it instead of doing it just for the sake of saying we did it.”

Influential music professor speaks on winning two awards
SHANE WHEATLEY copy editor
Andrew Greenwood, assistant professor of musicology and graduate program director in the Department of Music, has been selected as one of the commencement speakers on behalf of his department after receiving two awards from the Graduate School earlier in 2019. Immigrating to the U.S. was a big move for Greenwood, but he sees a link in himself between his education and his immigration, going on to say that his knowledge and education has been shaped greatly by American institutions, allowing him to influence students in a unique way. After starting his work at SIUE in 2014, Greenwood made significant changes for the music department, including the design of two entirely new courses: Cultural History of Popular Music and Vikings, Myths, and Music. Now that he has been awarded both the SIUE Teaching Excellence Award and the Vaughnie Lindsay New Investigator Award, Greenwood is setting his sights forward toward the next generation of students graduating from SIUE. At the commencement
speech, Greenwood said he plans on speaking to students about the importance of connections made through their education, and making sure they keep growing those connections beyond their graduation. “One of the things I love about SIUE is the commitment. I’d love to see the graduates maintain that even when they’re gone and keep their connections with SIUE,” Greenwood said. “Those relationships don’t finish when they graduate.” Greenwood’s influence goes beyond that of just his students, as colleagues in his department have noticed his contribution toward their department as well. Michael Mishra, director of orchestral studies at SIUE, has worked extensively with Greenwood in their department, and said he has seen a revitalized view by students on the topic of music history. “One of the biggest differences that he’s made has been showing students that music history isn’t just there for a class, but it can actually be a career in its own right, as obviously he is the embodiment of that,” Mishra said. On the topic of the two awards Greenwood won earlier
this year, Mishra said it’s practically unheard of for someone to win two major awards like that at the same time, saying they haven’t had a music department faculty member give a commencement speech for the 26 years that he has worked at SIUE. John Korak, professor of trumpet and former music department chair, said he has worked with Greenwood and observed his teaching and what he has done for the department and his lasting effect on it, adding that he’s been a great addition to the faculty. On the few opportunities Korak has had to sit in on Greenwood’s classes, he said he saw students getting involved and actively wanting to learn, something that leaves a lasting impression on the students. “With his teaching, he brings in interesting facets to get students interested in what he’s about to tell them,” Korak said. “If we’re here teaching, we can obviously impart the knowledge to students, but the way in which it’s imparted, I think really sets him apart.” When it comes to imparting knowledge to students, Korak and Greenwood agree that the interactions outside the classroom are just as important as the ones

inside the classroom. Greenwood recently had a daughter, and cites her as giving him the insight into how to help students grow beyond the classroom with a bit of care and time. “It gives you a new perspective into [the] nurturing and caring role you have as an educator,” Greenwood said. “Your job isn’t just to give students this informa-
tion, but to nurture their education as well.” Andrew Greenwood will be giving his commencement speech 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Vadalabene Center. SHANE WHEATLEY 650-3527 @shane_alestle swheatley@alestlelive.com
Rebecca Phillips strives to use degree to help others

Senior Rebecca Phillips, of Urbana, Illinois, was chosen to speak on behalf of the School of Nursing at the Fall 2019 commencement. Phillips is a full-time neonatal intensive care unit nurse, full-time student and mother of three.
Phillips is motivated by her passion for helping children, which stems from her background as a child in the Department of Child and Family Services system. Phillips’ first adoptive mother suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition that causes a caregiver to either fake symptoms or create real
symptoms in the person they care for. The woman left her at a lake at the age of four, when she was found by bicyclists. Phillips was placed in the DCFS system a second time, and bounced around different foster homes until she came to stay with the Garfields before being adopted again. Phillips credits the Garfields with changing the trajectory of her life. “That probably was the biggest turning point in my life, even at four years old. They just provided a place of love and respect, and they cared so much about me even though I wasn’t biologically their child,” Phillips said. Through the Garfields, Phillips learned how to care for those in need. “I think one of the things that I’ve learned from them was caring for other people very passionately, and so I think that’s why I fell into the jobs that I have in life and why nursing was just such a good fit for me,” Phillips said. This rocky start inspired Phillips to advocate for others, especially in her work in the NICU. “Kids are so innocent, and they don’t ask for the cards they’ve been given, and they’re
not always able to change that,” Phillips said. “But as health-care providers, we can be advocates and we can research and we can do things to make their quality of life better.” Phillips believes that health care is about more than just physical care. “Sometimes it’s not the medicine and operations and X-rays; sometimes it’s getting a board game and just sitting down and playing a game with a child, drawing and coloring pictures or holding a hand,” Phillips said. Andrea Scroggins, a former co-worker and longtime friend of Phillips, said by treating children with such remarkable kindness, Phillips often leaves a lasting impact. “Rebecca was getting thank you notes at home or sometimes at work from her manager from these families, thanking her for taking extra care of their kids,” Scroggins said. “They send her pictures and updates on their babies, and I think it takes a really exceptional nurse to get that kind of recognition.” Phillips worked as a paramedic for 16 years, but wanted to do more to help children in need. She got her associate’s degree for nursing and started in the NICU, then decided to continue to pur-
sue her education. Phillips acknowledges her husband, Mike, for helping her achieve her dreams, through both physical and emotional support. “He is just the most loving, kind and decent human being that I’ve ever met in my life,” Phillips said. Mike is proud of his wife’s accomplishments, as are their children. “She just had to give her big capstone presentation … I was sitting in the corner of the room, listening to her give it,” Mike said. “I texted all the girls when she was done, I was like, ‘she killed it!’” Phillips is applying to graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago for her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in pediatric acute care. “It’s just nice to have opportunities to be able to expand my ability to care for people,” Phillips said. Phillips will be speaking at 2 p.m. Friday during the School of Nursing graduation ceremony in the Vadalabene Center. NICOLE BOYD 650-3527 @nicole_alestle nboyd@alestlelive.com

Stanley Cup ‘winner’ Sydney Daniel speaking at graduation JOHN MCGOWAN reporter
Senior mass communications major Sydney Daniel, of Adams, Tennessee, a former cheerleader and TV show host, will be one of four student speakers at graduation this Friday. Daniel is one of the younger graduates this semester, having recently turned 21 and graduating in just three and a half years. Daniel is a student who has always had a large presence on campus. She’s friendly with many faculty members, and has been involved with multiple clubs and organizations. One of her most notable positions is hosting for SIUE’s Global Village, a news television show on campus. Cory Byers, a mass communications professor and head of Global Village, believes Daniel’s success in hosting the TV show is indicative of how she will do on her speech. “As a host she’s been really good. She’s good at knowing her lines, she’s good at public speaking, she’s really energetic,” Byers said. “So, she’s been a great host the whole three seasons [she’s
worked on the show] … I think she’ll be very comfortable talking in front of a crowd.” Along with hosting for Global Village, Daniel was an SIUE cheerleader for three years. She also works at the Student Fitness Center as a club sports student assistant. Phil Leyerer, the club sports and intramural coordinator for campus recreation, as well as Daniel’s boss, spoke on why he thinks she’s a good fit to speak at graduation. “Sydney’s a go-getter. She sets herself goals and things that she wants to reach in her career and in here as a student at SIUE … I think that’s really made her stand out here in my area working on club sports,” Leyerer said. In her interview, Daniel was quick to add that she had had two internships recently that she was proud of. “I worked for the St. Louis Blues this past season, so technically I’m a Stanley Cup champion, but I’m not buying the ring because it was over ten grand,” Daniel said. “Can’t afford that.” She said both internships were very demanding, with her often working nonstop seven days a week, but Daniel still val-
ued what she learned about news and PR by being the face of the team at times. For someone who’s interested in both news and sports, Daniel believed the internships were very valuable. “I’ve been interested in it [reporting] since probably middle school … I’ve always enjoyed watching the news. Being an on-field reporter like an Erin Andrews type person would be super fun because I like to be involved in sports, but not necessarily super great with a ball, and cheerleading ends after college,” Daniel said. When asked what makes her unique and what sets her apart, along with citing her accomplishments, Daniel mentioned her personality. “I just feel like I’m very outgoing, I can make a friend everywhere,” Daniel said. Watch Daniel speak for the College of Arts and Science at 1 p.m. Saturday Dec. 14, at the Vadalabene Center for SIUE’s Fall 2019 commencement. Kaylynn Woolfolk uses education to make a difference
| Photo courtesy of SIUE Marketing & Communications MARCUS KEY reporter
Master’s of Science in Education student Kaylynn Woolfolk of Chicago, is a commencement speaker at this year’s graduation. As Woolfolk’s college career comes to its end, she reflected on the opportunities she had to volunteer and be involved with the young, which she said is her
calling. Woolfolk has done a number of things outside of school. She has a passion for being involved in programs and organizations that provide mentorship and unique opportunities to young adults in low-income areas, such as East St. Louis, Illinois. Woolfolk said she is most proud of her involvement with the TRIO Upward Bound Pro-
gram and her internship with Saint Louis University College of Pharmacy’s Higher Education department. “I really am grateful I got to be a part of TRIO Upward Bound for two years and the internship at Saint Louis University. Those two experiences have helped me get to where I am today,” Woolfolk said. Ashton Greene, a close friend of Woolfolk from Jefferson City, Missouri, believes that Woolfolk will be an asset wherever she decides to work. “One thing that I love about Kaylynn is that she is always open and willing to learn. She is always ready to learn something new, ready to attack assignments and projects. She is one person that I know will get the work done. She definitely works hard. Kaylynn loves to keep herself busy along with work, school and volunteer as well,” Greene said. “When Kaylynn graduates, I think that her most important role in society is going to be communicating with young adults because she has a really great story and has overcome a lot, so being there for people and helping mentor young adults and children is a great asset to what she has to bring to the table.” Woolfolk is a cheerleading
coach at Gateway Stem High School in St. Louis, where she has built a strong rapport and trust with many young girls. She participated in American College Personnel Association Convention in Boston, where she did a case study competition for higher education and won third place. Woolfolk also did a practicum experience with Tarsha Moore, who is the assistant director of student diversity and inclusion. Cierra Wourman, of Fairview Heights, Illinois, a close friend of Woolfolk, said that Woolfolk’s dependability is one thing she really appreciates. “Kaylynn is the type of person that will quit what she’s doing to help someone else out. She is always trying to see what she can do for others, and that’s what young people need … people who truly care. And if she can’t help, she doesn’t mind letting you know,” Wourman said. Woolfolk believes that it is important for young minorities to have people to look up to that understand them culturally, personally and can empathize with some of the changes they have gone through. “I have gone through so much in my life, and I know how helpful it is to have someone who looks like you to help
you and relate to you. I want to be that person to so many people. It’s my passion and my calling to work with the youth, and I want to see them through their struggles. I think young people have a chance to change the world,” Woolfolk said. In Woolfolk’s free time, she really enjoys taking boot camp fitness and yoga classes. The Yoga Collective is where one can find her during her free time. Woolfolk hopes that her experience in higher education allows her to move up the ranks and become a director for student support services at a university. “I want to be remembered for how I made people feel and the difference I made in their lives,” Woolfolk said. “It is so important to be kind to others, and I strive to do it every day. I want to be the voice and the light for those who have a voice but are afraid to use it. I am excited for what’s to come and trust God and the path he has for me,” Woolfolk will speak at 9 a.m. Saturday Dec. 14 at the Vadalabene Center.
