THE MAKING OF A MASTERPIECE A HISTORIC SANTA MONICA LANDMARK WITH HOLLYWOOD ROOTS EVOLVES INTO THE PINNACLE OF LUXURY ROCK.

BY SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

The House of Rock has experienced what every woman fantasizes about: aging backwards. From a traditional grand dame constructed in 1926 to the sleek, uber-sexy abode with cutting-edge technology features in 2012, this Tudor Revival home has remained a polished lady throughout her transformation.

Century-old Moreton Bay fig trees line famed La Mesa Drive, while original streetlamps illuminate Period Revival homes. Renowned Southern California architect Elmer Grey designed the home for A.N. Kemp, then vice president of California Bank.

www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 7

“WHAT A DISH, WHAT A DREAM, WHAT A DAME!” However, the home is most frequently associated with actress Kathryn Grayson, who purchased the house in 1945 and occupied it until her death in 2010. Kathryn starred in many of MGM’s popular musicals, including Kiss Me Kate, Show Boat and Anchors Aweigh, and often entertained other Hollywood celebrities at the home. After her estate settled, the home was purchased with the intent of making it the inaugural House of Rock. With unique design elements combining both Tudor and Gothic influences, the home is the perfect combination of high drama and substance that defines luxury rock. Extraordinary paneled walls, decorative half-timbering, massive chimneys and Gothic windows and doors are the architectural zeitgeist that perfectly parallels the musical and aesthetic creativity of the House of Rock 2012. Elaine Culotti worked as designer and developer, with general contractor Lanny Hoover of Masterpiece Builders, LLC, to gut much of the house. New wiring, plumbing and plaster work set the stage for the decadent, 21st-century furnishings, while all the

original architectural details—such as the woodwork and doors—were preserved so the house would have the perfect balance of old and new. The footprint of the original house was not altered, but the additions of transforming the attic into the studio and the entertaining kitchen in the porte-cochère drastically increased the overall square footage. An army of influential designers, renowned for their chic aesthetic and ability to bridge pop culture with innovative design, brought life to every room. Now the House of Rock 2012 oozes over-the-top treatments and furnishings from ceiling to floor. With the largest swimming pool in Santa Monica and a V.I.P. cabana, the house is the ultimate destination for industry entertaining. From the state-of-the-art recording studio to the concert-quality amphitheater, the House of Rock 2012 is the pinnacle destination for those in the music industry. Many of the products featured throughout the house are making an international debut.

AFTER A CENTURY OF BEING A SEDATE RESIDENCE, THE HOUSE OF ROCK NOW ENTERS A PHASE OF UNPARALLELED ACTIVITY.

The top-notch winged console by Solid State Logic floats over the Riviera Golf Course, creating a room with both a view and a fabulous sound. The recording studio is booked with an extraordinary roster of talent—from renowned producers to emerging talent. From opening day, the House of Rock 2012 will host the most notable and newsworthy people and events.

La Mesa Drive has long been the site for a significant number of noted homes and renowned homeowners. However, 2012 marks the beginning of a new identity for the famed street. As a parade of top talent from every genre crosses the threshold of the House of Rock, the street now hosts the best and brightest stars in every industry.

With a fantastic calendar of charity events scheduled, the house is an epicenter of fundraising. Every event, including private functions, will have a charity component—making the House of Rock 2012 one of the most productive and lucrative venues for a wide variety of worthy causes.

In the 1945 MGM musical Anchors Aweigh, Frank Sinatra sang to Kathryn Grayson, “What a dish, what a dream, what a dame!” Truer lines were never spoken about Kathryn Grayson and her home; this dame has certainly aged beautifully.

THE HOUSE

WRITTEN BY ADELE CYGELMAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY MARCEL ESKENAZY

THE MAJESTIC ROOFLINE AND GRACIOUS ARCHITECTURE OF THIS LANDMARK ESTATE ARE NEWLY VISIBLE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES. ALL THE PERIOD DETAILS OF THE ENGLISH COTTAGE/TUDOR REVIVAL HOUSE, BUILT IN 1926 BY NOTED PASADENA ARCHITECT ELMER GREY, HAVE BEEN RESTORED AND ENHANCED.

12 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

FRONT FACADE

The high-pitched gable roof with double-flue chimneys was covered in organic slate, which will age and patina in time; copper accents the eyebrow and bay windows; and the leaded windows were renovated. The distinctive, Gothic arched doorway, with timbered posts and turned-wood balustrades, offers a fittingly dramatic entrance to this great estate.

Two sets of iron gates open onto a semicircular driveway and front garden that was landscaped by Susan McEowen in an English style to complement the architecture. Formal boxwood is hedged with the “controlled chaos of lavender, iceberg and fairy roses, rosemary, fountain grass, salvia, wisteria, hydrangeas and westringia. To give the house an even more stately appearance, McEowen brought in large California sycamores, Italian cypress, ficus, Little Gem magnolia and Australian tea trees.

ENTRANCE “ALL THE ORIGINAL FEATURES WERE RESTORED” The magnificent, Tudor-style entrance hall showcases the home’s overall theme of vintage-meets-modern. Old World craftsmanship resonates in the dark-paneled walls, massive cathedral ceiling, thick-notched wood beams and grand staircase with turned banisters. “All the original features were restored,” says

lead designer Elaine Culotti. “Anything that was damagted, we matched and re-created.” Texas limestone floors were laid in a contemporary, bricklayer pattern to give this soaring space a modern feel with maximum impact. A grand entrance to an exceptional home.

www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 15

LIBRARY FOR MUSIC The intimacy of this “composatorium musicalis” provides a platform for art, showcasing a collection of objects and treatments that epitomizes the Susan Cohen Associates style. The three designers—Susan Cohen, Peter Bolton and Ella Mathis—began by lightening the vintage, dark-wood paneling. Upholstered and studded shutters were added to provide both a sound buffer and a sense of enclosure. The room was then enveloped in painted finishes, from the shimmering metal leaf ceiling to the narrow bookcases and paneling aged to replicate the cigarette-smoked patina of a jazz man’s crib. One lighting effect stands out: Two Eyejunk Studios lightbox images of raging fans at a rock concert by Owl Eyes draw you into the space like a glowing marquee and provide a backdrop for the elegant F.A. Porsche piano. The photo

of a young Miles Davis by legendary photographer Herman Leonard complements and challenges the Eyejunk Studios drawing by Evan York of an instrument pileup crash, hanging over a bar designed and sculpted by Henry Duarte for Cisco Home. An amazing collection of vintage barware and glassware refracts light onto other design elements, like stacked-up books defiantly painted by Esme Shapiro, and Tim Doyle’s polished, stainless steel sculptures. Bookends as art, books as paintings, and Roy Bittan’s beautiful mother-of-pearl accordion displayed like a museum piece behind glass doors. Ron Reihel’s skin-covered sculpture draws the eye over the fireplace mantel. When the cocktail hour approaches and you sink into Michael Berman’s lounge chair, the space has gone from tea to martini—and you would like another.

GREAT ROOM

DESIGNER: ELAINE CULOTTI

20 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

WITH ITS SOARING, 40-FOOT-HIGH CATHEDRAL CEILING, MASSIVE WOOD BEAMS, STAINED-GLASS BAY WINDOW, HAND-CRAFTED LEADED WINDOWS, CARVED STONE MANTEL AND A HALF-TIMBERED MINSTREL’S GALLERY, THE TUDOR-INSPIRED GREAT ROOM IS THE CENTERPIECE OF THE LANDMARK ESTATE. To offset the vintage details, designer Elaine Culotti covered one end of the room in a mirrored, Venetian-glass wallpaper and the other in bronze mica. Each of the French doors is carefully wrapped in embossed snakeskin for added texture and elegance. All the Venetian plastering is freshly added, as is the cross parquet floor and gorgeous, black lapis fireplace. To elevate the room to luxury rock ‘n’ roll heights, Elaine brought in three shimmering chain-andcrystal chandeliers and a pair of matching sconces. Bold textiles and metallic finishes highlight the furniture, such as the peacock-blue, upholstered banquette, Joshua wing chairs in zebra and a bedazzled silver leaf and chocolate leather sofa— the chairs and sofa with a bronze metal finish on the legs. With the addition of a beautiful Lucite Schimmel piano, this room is ready to rock. www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 21

DESIGNER: RALPH PUCCI MUSIC INSPIRATION: ROLLING STONES’ EXILE ON MAIN STREET

22 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

SITTING ROOM With its stripped-down paneling, the sitting room is a modern-day interpretation of Villa Nellcôte in Villefranche-sur-Mer in the south of France, the location of the Rolling Stones’ early-1970s recording of Exile On Main Street. “We wanted to re-create the decadent environment of Exile but as if it was recorded in 2012 sans the excess of drugs and alcohol,” says designer Ralph Pucci. As this historical recording embodied an eclectic mix of rock, blues, country, soul and gospel, the furniture selected for the room similarly mixes chic, elegant, timeless and sculptural with a unique rawness to evoke a similar spirit.

www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 23

Like the blues, the sofas and club chair from the Ralph Pucci Furniture (One) collection is modern and minimal. There’s a rock ‘n roll vibe to the silver-plated and blackened bronze side table by Eric Schmitt. The freedom to explore and improvise comes through in the Jim Zivic coal table and Lianne Gold glass chandelier and sconce. And to capture the rawness of the original recording, 11 of Marcus Leatherdale’s arresting black-and-white photographs titled “New York 1980s” were chosen to grace the walls.

DINING ROOM

DESIGNER: DAVID BROMSTAD MUSIC INSPIRATION: TINA TURNER 24 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 25

WITH A BOW TO THE SEXY, SHIMMERING STRUT OF A MUSIC LEGEND, THE DINING ROOM HAS BEEN ENTIRELY ENMESHED IN BEAUTIFULLY DRAPED CHAIN. “TINA TURNER SHAKING HER FRINGE BROUGHT HER AESTHETIC INTO THE INSTALLATION,” SAYS DESIGNER AND HGTV HOST DAVID BROMSTAD, WHO PERSONALLY SHAPED THE HANGING CHAIN ON-SITE. “I LOVE DOING INSTALLATIONS LIKE THESE.”

The chain—the star of the room—forms a fluid and highly tactile series of arched columns at the entrance and layers around the windows. The ceiling design imitates the Gothic style of the entrance, David’s way of interpreting the architecture of the façade and bringing it inside. “I’ve never seen chain used en masse like this—only as a single layer,” he notes. “My clients aren’t brave enough to do this, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” An 18th-century library table with a black base and a glass top plus chairs from Atmosphere and two chandeliers are the only other accents in the room, allowing the sculpted chain to take center stage. “I want people to be wowed,” he adds. “The dining room is a little crazy, very dramatic and totally over the top.” 26 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

WINE CELLAR Glass doors in the dining room lead into the gravitydefying wine cellar by Innovative Wine Cellar Design, which is debuting its patented Bottle Bing display system for the first time in a residential setting. Mounted into three slate panels on one side of the room are aluminum bottle holders fitted with a rubber gasket to protect and display bottles while keeping them at a proper angle to keep the cork moist. The slate panels, each holding 12 bottles, also allow wine aficionados to label the bottles in chalk. The free-floating, brushed nickel rack across the back wall consists of four columns of triple-deep racks that

www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 27

display 72 bottles each. “This simple yet elegant system features a label-forward concept that actually displays your wine—no more hunting to find the perfect bottle for your guests,” says Sandy Horwitz, president of the Scottsdale company. In keeping with the gravitydefying concept, a floating cabinet and glass shelves offer space for decanting and displaying favorite vintages and stemware. The room’s split refrigeration system is the quietest available and has a hidden, wall-mounted evaporator and a remote control. Rounding out the space is a stunning grey and red Silestone counter with sink.

KITCHEN

THE THEME OF THE HOUSE—VINTAGE STYLE UPDATED WITH CONTEMPORARY TOUCHES AND STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT—IS PERFECTLY EMBODIED IN THE KITCHEN. THE HAMMERED AND EMBOSSED WHITE TIN CEILING AND CROWN MOLDINGS EMPHASIZE TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP, WHILE THE KOHLER FIXTURES, THERMADOR PROFESSIONAL APPLIANCES—TWO OVENS, TWO REFRIGERATORS, A FREEZER AND THREE DISHWASHERS—AND AN OVEN HOOD FINISHED IN BRONZE PROVIDE ALL MODERN CONVENIENCES. Ramping up the contemporary feel are a Kohler Whitehaven farmhouse sink and Portofino prep sink, both in baby blue shot through with chocolate and topped with Kohler’s articulating Karbon “microphone” faucets. Tall, dark cabinets with mottled glass fronts are offset by a modern, white, subway tile backsplash. Two whimsical light fixtures made of bottles hang over the Davos wood dining table and banquette in the breakfast area. Adjacent is a full laundry room with sink, dishwasher and four Maytag washers and dryers as well as a walk-in pantry fully stocked with supplies from Whole Foods.

This small but glamorous room begins with a massive arch painted plum—a striking portal to an intimate space. The walls are finished in a shimmering, mauve, peacock wallcovering by Cole & Sons that alternates with horizontal bands of aluminum for dramatic effect. “Gentner Design provided a fabulous, contemporary sofa with a fuchsia, velvet fabric by Deco Fabrics, along with cocktail tables and a dry bar,” says designer

Kelly Van Halen. “The custombuilt secretary desk designed by Baron Rogers and myself features a dropdown writing area and shelves and will also be finished in wine/plum.” Felicia Ferrone, an architect and product designer in Chicago, provides glassware and accessories for the bar from her Revolution Collection. Cashmere pillows and cashmere sofa throw were carefully chosen from the Kelly Van Halen Collection.

ROCK PAPER PHOTO ART GALLERY

32 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

ROCK PAPER PHOTO—THE DEFINITIVE ONLINE GALLERY FOR FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY—BRINGS ROCK ‘N’ ROLL TO LIFE IN A ROOM OUTFITTED ESPECIALLY FOR THE HOUSE OF ROCK. ROCK PAPER PHOTO CREATED A ONE-OF-A-KIND MURAL THAT COVERS AN ENTIRE WALL WITH A PHOTO MOSAIC OF MUSIC LEGENDS, FROM JIMI HENDRIX AND BOB DYLAN TO JERRY GARCIA, BOB MARLEY, STING, PRINCE, WILLIE NELSON AND TOM PETTY. Limited edition signed and framed photographs line this pop-up room, capturing intimate moments with a variety of music icons. One of these—an unpublished 1971 photo, by Jim Britt, of Michael Jackson on the rooftop of a studio on La Brea—receives its public debut at the House of Rock. Also in the mix: The Beatles seated at the foot of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Wales in 1967, by Henry Grossman; David Bowie in his Paris hotel room on the 1976 “Station to Station” tour, by Andrew Kent; Robert Plant famously proclaiming, “I am a golden god!” from the balcony of the “Riot House” (aka the Hyatt on Sunset) in 1975, by Peter Simon; Madonna in one of her earliest photo shoots, by Richard Corman, in 1982 on New York’s Lower East Side before her first record release; and Debbie Harry stretched out on a Coney Island beach for a 1977 punk magazine photo spread, by Roberta Bayley. As the finishing touch, a service bar sits outside the windows of the room for a bartender, ready to pass drinks through.

www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 33

GUEST ROOM Taking a cue from the complex yet catchy beats of Scissor Sisters, the guest room pushes the design envelope. “They mix many different genres of music into one song the way I do with textures in one room,” says designer Kyle Schuneman of the punk-rock-meets-glam-rock band. “And they play with the idea of masculinity, the same way that this room is very masculine in design and uses non-traditional pieces like the cowhide panels and funky furniture and art.” Custom cowhide artwork by Kyle Bunting, mimicking metal gears, flanks the wool, pinstripe bed with brass nailhead trim.

A brass dresser, destroyed metal and leather chairs, skull side chair from Ankasa and reclaimed wood side tables and locker by Timothy Oulton all tie in to the sturdy and edgy industrial theme. Accents include charcoal, silk Roman shades by Blindsaver, photo artwork by Joe Schmelzer, brass and Carrara marble lamps by Arteriors, and assorted sculptures and accessories by Jayson Home and Garden. The Waynesboro Taupe wall paint by Benjamin Moore provides the perfect backdrop to Kyle Schuneman’s study of hedonistic harmony.

MASTER BEDROOM THE MASTER BEDROOM EMBODIES SAMI HAYEK’S PHILOSOPHY OF HAVING A RANGE FROM HIGH TO LOW— PERFECT FOR SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS FINE DINING BUT ALSO GOES TO EAST LA FOR THE BEST TACOS. IT’S A VERY SUBTLE ROOM, WHERE THE STORIES AND MEMORABLE MOMENTS BECOME THE STAR. ROCKERS AND RAPPERS ALIKE ARE MORE SOPHISTICATED TODAY AND HAVE A MORE ROUNDED LIFESTYLE. HE’S NARROWING THAT NARRATIVE IN THIS SPACE.

www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 37

“All the pieces—furnishings, lighting, carpet, drapes— are my designs,” says Sami. “The bed and credenza are made of walnut with chocolate leather and brass details. The multi-position chaise lounge is walnut and black leather—I’ve developed a system that makes it comfortable for everyone, regardless of their height. A small round table has a book-matched pattern like a rose with two seamless brass rings—only a handful of people will notice the detailing and precision required. The drapes are based on the Mexican Revolution—the pattern looks like a 17th-century French design, but when you get closer, you see that it’s bullets and rifles. This celebrates how music has been revolutionary over time, not only within its own realm but among entire cultures.” Right before you enter the room is a tallboy storage unit wrapped in book-matched rosewood. The doors and spaces between the drawers are dressed with about 150,000 glass beads inlaid one by one by the Huichol tribe in Mexico. A jaguar head in the room is handcarved in the same manner. The main reference in the Huichol pattern is to peyote, the powerful mushroom used in ceremonies and rituals to heal the emotional body and soul, as music does. “This room is an exercise in creating a feeling, not a look or a style,” he adds. “I want people to feel sexy, sophisticated, relaxed and super comfortable.”

“Her” side, down a flight of stairs, is a breathtaking symphony in glass. Taking center stage is a glass-enclosed steam shower and tub. Using a combination of Kohler WaterTile overhead rain shower and body spray, Purist showerhead and SoundTile speakers, all controlled by their DTV digital interface and thermostatic valve, the shower sits next to the freestanding Abrazo tub. The shower wall is a Dune tile tapestry of snakeskin, zebra, crocodile, damask and plaid squares that looks like a patchwork quilt. The entire ceiling is covered in Dune reflective mirror tile, with a Fortuny chandelier to soften the effect. Walls are lined with closets and cabinets, featuring stunning, mother-of-pearl, butterfly drawer pulls by Schaub. There are three sinks—vanity, regular and bar. A separate water closet is fitted with Kohler’s onepiece Numi toilet and today’s must-have amenity—a Robern medicine cabinet with refrigeration unit, ideal for storing HGH, expensive creams or probiotics without having to run downstairs to the kitchen. “His” side is encased in wood paneling. The shower has raised, Oceanside glass tile and Kohler’s Stance showerhead and SoundTile speakers. Over the sink is a Robern M Series cabinet with an 8-inch TV integrated in the mirrored door. And what looks like two TV screens are actually LG’s Art Cool air-conditioning units.

Caissons were sunk 70 to 80 ft at the property edge to support the 60by 40-ft pool, which has infinity edges on all four sides and is surrounded by a pebblestone deck. The Texas limestone deck extends out from the house and adds approximately 7,000 sq ft of outdoor space furnished with dining and lounge pieces from Brown Jordan’s Shape and Open collections. Amping up the fun is the pool cabana and splash bar at one end and an outdoor stage and amphitheater with grass seating at the other.

44 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

CABANA + SPLASH BAR “Everything I do comes from the images, art and music I grew up around,” says designer and HGTV Design Star winner Antonio Ballatore. When designing the cabana and splash bar, Antonio paid tribute to the old school metal, punk and hardcore music bands that have inspired and influenced him as a designer. To add an authentic, raw flavor to this raging social space, graffiti, iconic logos and sketches of classic metal bands were engraved into the cabana’s reclaimed wood walls, referencing

the drawings that “metalheads” would carve into schoolhouse desktops. A vintage photo of screaming fans at a Slayer concert was enlarged to serve as a mural in the splash bar—a quintessential backdrop for music-loving partygoers. Oversize images from acclaimed studio and commercial photographer Kenneth Cappello—featuring The Kills—also hang on the walls of the cabana. An amoeba-shaped custom sofa, reminiscent of a bubbling lava lamp, provides the main seating

in the cabana. A textile tribute to The Misfits on oversized throw pillows accents this bright purple couch. The structure was built exclusively for the Microsoft Surface table, provided by InterKnowlogy, showcasing Microsoft’s latest technology. This design homage reaches a raucous high note with the stone cherub statues flanking the entry, each decked out with Gene Simmons’ iconic painted face. “Of course, I had to throw KISS in there, because it justifies all the time I spent working on the perfect KISS face paint as a kid.”

BACK TO THE FUTURE STATE-OF-THE-ART DIGITAL PRODUCTS MERGE WITH A STELLAR ARRAY OF BOUTIQUE AND VINTAGE GEAR TO PRODUCE AN UNPARALLELED HOME RECORDING STUDIO EXPERIENCE. PRESENTED BY VINTAGE KING AUDIO, SOLID STATE LOGIC AND BLUE MICROPHONES

DIRECTORS OF TECHNICAL AND CREATVIE DESIGN: JACK JOSEPH PUIG AND TYLER BARTH www.2012HouseOfRock.com | 49

The House of Rock is committed to the arts and has opened its doors to hundreds of artists by donating studio time at the house. Whether it’s creating music in the great room, library, outdoor stage or the state-of-theart recording studio, the House of Rock inspires talent to create and collaborate. At the physical top of the House of Rock is the home recording studio. Tucked in the former attic of the Tudor Revival house, the studio occupies the entire third floor. The soul of the house, it was created with a united vision between the House of Rock co-founders, renowned multiGrammy-winning mixer and producer Jack Joseph Puig, and V.P. of Blue Microphones Tyler Barth. “Because we had a blank canvas, we were able to quickly and effectively act on our established relationships with industry leaders to create an unparalleled home recording studio,” says Tyler. The result is a $3.5-million recording facility boasting cutting-edge products and features. “Music is created on so many different levels that it has to be inspiring, and it must be experienced,” notes Jack. With that dictate, one of first calls Tyler made was to Solid State Logic. By pure serendipity, Solid State Logic had been considering producing winged consoles and had one in the prototype phase. “When we got the call for the House of Rock and found out that the unconventional studio shape would accommodate the winged console, we accelerated the project and put it into production,” says Dan Duffell, head of marketing for SSL. Now the studio boasts the first installed winged console with the 500 series modules mounted above.

“MUSIC IS CREATED ON SO MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS THAT IT HAS TO BE INSPIRING, AND IT MUST BE EXPERIENCED.” “I wanted to create a cockpit-like environment where a producer sits at the controls overlooking the 13th hole of the Riviera Country Club Golf Course and the vast sky beyond,” says Jack. As the rafters were being removed from the attic, the wiring, acoustical and all other technical equipment plans were being envisioned and created for the studio. “We chose great vendors who have great products,” shares Tyler. Lining up Vintage King, Audio Perception and Jerry Steckling of JSX Audio ensured that every aspect of the studio would be exceptional. “By bringing in top-of-theline companies, we crafted an extraordinary home studio experience,” says Jack. Tom Menrath, head of strategic development at Vintage King, had worked on many previous studio designs with Jack. “When we met with Jack, he painted an extremely vivid picture of what he had in mind,” says Tom. “From that day forward, this partnership has been a seamless meeting of the minds that resulted in a creative space that has exceeded everyone’s expectations.” The Barefoot Sound MiniMain 12 speakers supplied by Vintage King are making their inaugural debut at the House of Rock. The MM12 speakers boast 1,200 watts with a seven-driver design, yet no vibrations are transferred from the drivers—yielding unprecedented impulse response. The ProAc Studio 100 near field monitors are another exclusive addition to the studio by Vintage King.

Once Jack, Tyler and House of Rock designer/developer Elaine Culotti determined the layout of the studio, David Knauer of Audio Perceptions created patch bay diagrams to determine all necessary connections and wiring in the studio, great room and library. Working with his partner, Jason Atkinson, and their engineer, Craig Martin, “we navigated the highly labor-intensive process of defining everything from cables to connectors to wall panels so that the recording capabilities would be first-rate,” says David. Belden, BTX and Neutrik contributed significant amounts of product that paved the way for a seamless installation by Audio Perception.

Jerry Steckling worked with Jack and Elaine to create a plan that could completely address the acoustics of the studio while also meeting the aesthetic design envisioned for the space. With ingenious solutions such as acoustic dampening in the bottom of the sofa and built-in bass absorbers tuned to specific frequencies behind the cavities of the wainscoting, Jerry addressed every space to create the most advanced acoustics while staying within the design parameters. Blue microphones and Fender guitars float throughout the studio with an array of the entire product lines. “We’re here both physically and through the equipment used in the music creation process,” says Tyler. Jennifer Vernon’s strategic partnership team worked with House of Rock account manager Anna Pleus, Jack and Tyler to create dynamic and engaging brand integrations. In total, more than 60 brands of recording-related products are represented throughout the studio. House of Rock is a merging of design, fashion, art, technology, music and events into one physical space, and it has succeeded in defining the lifestyle of luxury rock. As Jack sums up, “We’ve got the home studio of the future in the House of Rock, but that future is now.”

LIVING UP TO THE HYPE EXTREME MUSIC AND MTV NETWORKS BURST INTO THE STUDIO WITH THE DISCOVERY AND OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW ARTISTS THROUGH HYPE MUSIC EXPLODING ONTO THE MUSIC SCENE IN 2011, HYPE MUSIC CONTINUES TO ESCALATE IN THE HOUSE OF ROCK 2012. EXTREME MUSIC AND MTV NETWORKS FORMED THE CREATIVE PARTNERSHIP OF HYPE MUSIC IN ORDER TO BRING THE BEST EMERGING TALENT TO THE FOREFRONT OF THE INDUSTRY IN A CONCISE, ACCELERATED FORMAT. BY UNITING EMERGING ARTISTS WITH INDUSTRY ICONS AND FUNNELING THEM THROUGH TELEVISION, HYPE MUSIC HAS BROKEN THE MOLD OF THE LONG-ESTABLISHED MUSIC INDUSTRY. From its inception in 1981, MTV has always been about music discovery and opportunity through television. Since 1997, Extreme Music has developed an extraordinary catalog of groundbreaking music based on the platform of production music. “The new twist in studio music is that we’re going to leverage the MTV universe to emerging artists through Hype,” says Joe Cuello, SVP of creative music integration for MTV Networks. “There’s so much talent out there, but we’re going to be very picky and discover the best through an organic selection process by which we will hand-pick artists that are agreed upon by both companies,” said Russell Emanuel, CEO of Extreme Music. Hype is a very talent-friendly artist incubator and licensing company that seeks “true musicians who write their own music and are incredible live performers,” continues Joe. The message from Hype is clear: watch out. Hype is going to break the boundaries not only of how talent has emerged in the industry, but also the type of talent that will rise to the top in this fast-track platform. Hype has experienced phenomenal success with the frat-party icon Wallpaper. In that same vein, Hype will continue to push the boundaries in the House of Rock 2012. By working with industry legends such as John Alagia (Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Zac Brown) and Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, The Cars, the Rolling Stones, The Who, T. Rex), Hype Music will provide invaluable creative input and mentoring experiences for their artists. “We’re looking to create transformative experiences for our artists in the House of Rock,” notes Joe. Between the ability to recognize the hottest new talent and having the resources to push them to the top, Hype Music has experienced stupendous success in the realm of emerging artists. “We’re breaking boundaries and shattering expectations, and we’re having incredible success along the way,” smiles Russell. Move over traditional platforms. Hype Music is here in a new but firmly established category.

INSTRUMENTAL VALUE

GORGEOUS GUITARS AND GRAND PIANOS ARE AMONG THE INSTRUMENTS ON DISPLAY AND IN PRACTICE AT THE HOUSE OF ROCK.

EVERY ROOM IN THE HOUSE OF ROCK IS A MUSICAL DELIGHT TO THE SENSES. WHETHER A SEE-THROUGH PIANO OR THE HIGH-GLOSS, CANDY-APPLE RED OF A GUITAR OR THE POWER OF A MEGA-WATT AMP, INSTRUMENTS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE OF ROCK MAKE PEOPLE WANT TO REACH OUT AND PLAY SOMETHING. These instruments are as visually fulfilling as they are musically capable is a testament to the companies and craftsmen who make them. Fender products abound in the House of Rock, to the joy of artists, producers, viewers and a few lucky souls who will receive the 30 Stratocasters Fender has donated to be distributed during charity events at the house. House of Rock’s Jennifer Vernon and Clay Lyons, Director of Engagement Marketing for Fender, worked together closely to create a unique and multi-layered branded entertainment experience for Fender. “We are pleased to have Fender as a partner,” shares Jennifer. “They have embraced the House of Rock with collaboration in every way.” “The House of Rock was an incredible opportunity to work with so many great companies, and we recognized the tremendous potential in becoming a sponsor of this project,” said Clay. Fender addressed the House of Rock project in four different components: the studio, the stage, displays and charity gifts. “There are specific instruments and amplifiers that were hand-selected by Fender, which work best for the recording applications of a particular space or the design of a specific room—or as a gift, in a charity context,” says John Dreyer, marketing production manager. From the 50th anniversary Jaguar to Stratocasters to Telecasters to basses and amps, Fender has placed a full array in the House of Rock inventory. Additionally, they will provide 30 guitars to be auctioned off at each charity event hosted at House of Rock, and another 30 guitars to be auctioned off for the Music Unites event alone. Just as exceptional are the pianos in the House of Rock. “Our product lines are treasured,” states Dennis Hagerty, founder and president of the Keyboard Concepts stores that represent Schimmel, Bösendorfer and Yamaha pianos. Elaine Culotti, House of Rock chief of creative design, and Dennis Hagerty had worked on previous projects together, so when Grammy-winning producer and mixer Jack Joseph Puig entered the piano selection process, it was a convergence of exceptional talent and extraordinary products. Both the great room and the library are wired for recording capabilities. Taking into account the differing acoustics in those rooms, pianos were selected for the variety of performing and recording needs. 58 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

“BOTH THE GREAT ROOM AND THE LIBRARY ARE WIRED FOR RECORDING CAPABILITIES. TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE DIFFERING ACOUSTICS IN THOSE ROOMS, PIANOS WERE SELECTED FOR THE VARIETY OF PERFORMING AND RECORDING NEEDS.” A 7’ concert grand Plexiglas Schimmel was chosen for the great room. It has a unique ingredient that makes it a spectacular choice for this space: the transducer converts the piano sounds to a MIDI signal for recording capabilities. Next they placed a Yamaha AvantGrande Hybrid in the library. “It combines the action of a grand piano with a high-end digital signal,” notes Dennis. Yamaha Clavinova pianos were chosen for both the studio and the stage due to their elegance and versatility. The House of Rock calendar is filled with rich events and performances, while the studio will boast exciting recordings and opportunities. In every situation, participants and attendees alike are guaranteed stellar performances based not only on the talent but also on the caliber of the instruments. Spectacular sounds are certain to float from the House of Rock due to the superior products of Fender and Keyboard Concepts.

CHARITY EVENTS TAKE THE STAGE THE HOUSE OF ROCK IS THE HEARTBEAT OF FUNDRAISING IN LOS ANGELES

The House of Rock is an advocate for all charities. For several weeks throughout the fall season, the House of Rock hosts events ranging from intimate private gatherings to larger functions that incorporate music, brands and celebrity components. The charity beneficiary for the House of Rock VIP Opening Party was Music Unites. The New York City-based non-profit is dedicated to creating and sustaining music education programs in under-developed school districts. The House of Rock event was the Los Angeles debut for Music Unites, and the house was host for two very important componetnts of the inauguration. The compo-

nent of music education, particularly in areas of need, by Music Unites is the exact message of education, creation and opportunity that defines the House of Rock. First, Music Unites launched a program entitled “Empowering Women Through Music.” In conjunction with Warner Bros. Records, they hosted a “Be Your Own Muse” educational workshop at the House of Rock. Young girls from Compton, California middle and high schools had the unique and incredible opportunity to spend an afternoon with some of the most influential women in the music industry. Panelists included in the program were Shira Lazar, Julie Piat and Michelle Jubelirer.

In a songwriting program with artist Helena, standout student Candace Camacho will act as a mentor to other girls her age and encourage them to pursue their dreams. As a surprise, each of the girls who participated received a Fender guitar as part of a generous gift from Guitar Center. Later that evening, Music Unites and the House of Rock hosted a VIP red carpet event that raised awareness and officially launched both projects in Los Angeles. With co-chairs Mike Albanese, Randy Spendlove, Steve Levine and Jed Selkowitz, Music Unites presented a performance by Lianne La Havas. “We were thrilled to be introducing Music Unites to Los Angeles, where we want to build a strong foundation of music education,” said MichelleEdgar, founder of Music Unites and director of brand partnerships and licensing at Warner Bros Records. “The House of Rock couldn’t be a more perfect opportunity for us, and we are honored and grateful.” The House of Rock launched a tremendous health initiative in October when it became the host for City of Hope—Songs of Hope VIII. City of Hope is a nationally recognized leader in the health industry, having received the prestigious recognition as one of 40 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country. City of Hope plays a paramount role in the research, treatment and education of cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. With an active role in every facet of the global health industry, City of Hope is headquartered northeast of Los Angeles and relies heavily on the Songs of Hope event to attract donors for the crucial health programs they provide. Songs of Hope VIII at the House of Rock attracted a stupendous roster of artist performances and hosts. The evening also included a benefit and silent auction of one-of-a-kind items and experiences. Cochairs David Renzer, Doug Davis and Evan Lamberg were proud to unite music and health in an extraordinary event that heals in a myriad of ways.

“THE HOUSE OF ROCK SERVES THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE IN A CRITICAL WAY. IT’S A VEHICLE TO UNITE INCREDIBLE CHARITIES WITH UNPARALLELED FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES BY INTRODUCING & FACILITATING KEY RELATIONSHIPS.” -JENNIFER VERNON. 78 | HOUSE OF ROCK 2012

Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. The funds raised in the U.S. support prostate cancer and testicular cancer initiatives. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Livestrong Foundation. Together, the three channels work together to ensure that Movember funds support a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in line with our strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.

skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs. They also develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making, contributing to club and community and celebrating our national heritage. The mission of The Show Me Campaign is to break the cycle of poverty using solutions that have been proven to improve people’s lives and to give them the opportunities to survive, thrive and succeed. The Show Me Campaign focuses on education reform to ensure that every child has the opportunity to shine. The Show Me Campaign also supports community-led development initiatives aimed at providing sustainable, scalable solutions that help the communities lift themselves out of extreme poverty. The Show Me Campaign partners with the community of Mbola, Tanzania and is helping to build a better life by supporting agriculture education and providing fertilizer to farmers; providing sustainable access to clean drinking water; building schools, training teachers and providing lunches; and saving lives by promoting basic health and providing medical supplies such as bed nets, medicines, vaccines and clinics.

Boys & Girls Club. Held at the House of Rock, instructors from RCLA hosted workshops on guitar, bass guitar and songwriting. Later that evening, FMIC and Girl Rock Nation teamed up to create an exclusive event to raise awareness and financial support for the non-profit organization Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles. The evening featured live performances by Two Piece Extra Spicy (Rock N’ Roll Camp LA Student Band), Annie Clements of Sugarland, Lucy Schwartz and Io Echo, as well as an interactive photo booth experience and silent auction. All of the proceeds from the fundraising efforts of the event benefited Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles. ABOUT: The Rock ’n’ Roll Camp for Girls builds

self-esteem through music creation and performance. Providing workshops and technical training, Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls creates leadership opportunities, cultivates a supportive community of peers and mentors, and encourages social change and the development of life skills. Girl Rock Nation is a place to motivate and inspire young women to rock in whatever they do—picking up a guitar, writing a song, mixing sounds to make music or to rock in life. Girl Rock Nation is a meeting place for all ages, skill levels and disciplines.
