ON THE COVER Saint John’s Health Center Foundation observes its 40th anniversary, pg. 22.
T
his is a special time for all of us at the Foundation as we celebrate 40 years of serving our beloved Saint John’s Health Center.
Despite some bumps in the road such as the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the years have been kind to us, and we have remained solidly committed to the values of our founding sisters as we transitioned to the leadership of our new sponsor, Providence Health & Services. Our Health Center today is a special blend of compassionate care and clinical excellence. We are expanding our already distinguished services in numerous specialty areas including neuroscience, orthopedics, cancer, cardiology and women’s health. We pride ourselves on offering a full spectrum of treatment and diagnostic services and meeting the specific needs of our community. The Foundation continues to grow as a philanthropic partner
with the Health Center, and we are committed to our stated mission to provide leadership and be the catalyst for philanthropic support for the hospital and the John Wayne Cancer Institute. We are comprised of a strong base of trustees and volunteers who appreciate Saint John’s for the wonderful place it has become and who wish to ensure its future and help it evolve. The Health Center is poised for a thriving future, reflected in the upcoming development plans for our north and south campuses, and the Foundation will be behind this effort every step of the way. We are grateful for the support of our many friends and partners, both longtime and new. We hope you enjoy this special 40th anniversary issue of Saint John’s magazine and invite you to share your feedback on our magazine by taking a brief online survey.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Inspiration from Sister Maureen Craig, SCL There is an old pioneer hymn entitled “The Thread That Runs So True” that speaks of our faith. We have that faith here at Saint John’s—faith in our institution and faith in our mission of healing. Through the years, so many people have become the thread that runs so true by assisting us in this mission. The Foundation trustees are examples of this devotion, service and love. As we commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Foundation, we can see many of these people standing before us—wonderful people from many walks of life and many faiths who took time from their busy lives to bring their wisdom, energy and friendship to Saint John’s. We recognize them and remember those who are no longer with us with much gratitude, happiness and love. Today we look around and see different faces, but the same spirit of devotion characterizes our Foundation trustees. We may laugh at the clothes in those old pictures from our Foundation’s early years—yes, women did wear hats to everything outside the home, and men actually wore vests with their suits! But while fashions have changed, faith in Saint John’s continues for our future. In this issue, you’ll read about old friends and new, what is happening now and what we look forward to. We welcome you to this healing, happy place we call Saint John’s and encourage you to support our mission. Come with us in our journey to a future free of many of the illnesses and problems of today.
Saint John's Health Center Foundation Financial Review The Saint John’s Health Center Foundation is pleased to present financial information for the years 2013 and 2014. The purpose of this summary is to provide a financial snapshot of the Foundation and to keep you informed of the difference your contributions make in support of the hospital. Following a transitional year in 2013, we are experiencing a resurgence of giving, and many pledges have been brought current. We are pleased to have addressed donors’ questions and can confidently report that our future is bright. We thank you for your gracious,

Saint John’s Continues String of Healthgrades® Honors Providence Saint John’s Health Center was cited as one of America’s Best Hospitals™ recently, marking the ninth straight year (2007 to 2015) the Health Center has earned the distinction. Saint John’s also continued an uninterrupted string of annual Healthgrades achievements in several practice or specialty areas. Healthgrades, a leading consumer rating company, bestows the Best Hospitals recognition on hospitals that rank among the top 5% of more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated nationwide for outstanding clinical performance on at least 21 of 32 of the most common diagnoses and procedures. Healthgrades findings empower consumers to evaluate and compare hospital performance. High rankings translate to better outcomes for seriously ill patients. For 2011 through 2013, hospitals in the Best Hospitals category had a 27.7% lower risk-adjusted mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions compared to all other hospitals. Saint John’s Health Center was recognized in many specialty areas including orthopedic, cardiac, gastrointestinal and critical care. The Healthgrades recognitions include America’s 100 Best by Specialty: • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care™ for four straight years • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement™ for four straight years • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Gastrointestinal Care™ in 2015

Your Gift Can Make An Impact Now
A Gift to Enhance the Skills of Ortho Nurses
Donations help make Providence Saint John’s Health Center one of the best hospitals in the nation. We constantly strive to meet the highest standards of care while adapting to technological and economic changes that impact the delivery of services. Your gift helps us purchase cutting-edge equipment, support clinical education, create new patient services and perform vital community outreach. To help you envision what your dollars can do, we’ve compiled a list of projects, equipment, programs and services that are immediate priorities for funding. A gift of any amount is appreciated and will be directed to one of these important projects. BEDSIDE ULTRASOUND ($100,000) This portable machine provides enhanced images in real time in order to facilitate emergency treatment in labor and delivery.
PANDA INFANT WARMER ($25,000) This state-of-the-art isolette promotes a safe and gentle recovery and transition period for infants immediately after birth. The unit features a built-in resuscitation system, an in-bed scale to easily weigh the baby and a revolutionary design that makes it easier to monitor babies. “PAWSITIVE” PET PROGRAM ($50,000) This highly regarded and popular program provides patients with visits from our “Pawsitive” dogs and volunteers. By giving their unconditional love and acceptance, these dogs reduce a patient’s pain, promote relaxation, lower blood pressure and relieve loneliness during a hospital stay.
ERBE ($140,000) The ERBE plasma coagulation system is used to cauterize tissue to stop bleeding and to ablate tumors and remove polyps. Placed in gastrointestinal treatment suites, the ERBE is available in case of an emergency to stop bleeding. MAGNET EDUCATION FUNDING ($300,000) The education and development of nurses is at the core of hospital excellence. Saint John’s seeks to continue the professional development of its nursing staff through the Magnet Recognition program, which creates and sustains a culture of excellent and compassionate care. The program results in eventual Magnet Recognition, the highest form of credentialing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Pawsitive Pets Receives Second Petco Foundation Grant The Petco Foundation has once again recognized the Pawsitive Pet Program with a generous Helping Heroes Grant that allows us to continue to lift patients’ spirits through bedside visits from these four-legged friends. The Paula Kent Meehan Pawsitive Pet volunteers and their specially trained dogs make thousands of visits a year to the Health Center—nearly every day and on every floor. Studies show that animal visitation promotes relaxation, boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure and heart rate and brings a sense of normalcy and joy to the bedside. We are grateful for Paula Kent Meehan’s years of support and for the recent grant from the Petco Foundation.

SAINT JOHN'S, SUMMER 2015
RAPID TRANSFUSER – FAST FLOW FLUID WARMERS ($10,000) Saint John’s has established a massive transfusion protocol to attend to the critical needs of patients with profuse bleeding. The rapid transfusers help deliver blood and IV fluids to emergency room patients quickly, saving precious minutes and lives. SEEDS OF INNOVATION ($1,000–$25,000) Your support will help the physicians and scientists at the John Wayne Cancer Institute develop ideas and research that lead to remarkable breakthroughs in the way we detect, diagnose and treat cancer around the world. SPONSORED CANCER RESEARCH PROJECTS ($50,000+) You can support specific areas of research, such as melanoma, breast, colorectal, neurology and gastrointestinal cancers. Donors of $50,000 or more to a John Wayne Cancer Institute research project are acknowledged in the investigator’s published research.
WIRELESS ECG MACHINES ($250,000) Several advanced-technology electrocardiography (ECG) machines are needed to enhance patient care and facilitate the interpretation of data. The machines will improve patient triaging and speed the time to treatment.
A generous gift from Marianna and David Fisher means Providence Saint John’s orthopedic nurses will have the opportunity to enhance their skills through a new Orthopedic Nursing Certification Program. The program helps orthopedic nurses advance their specialty skills, such as caring for patients with joint replacement, spine disorders, degenerative joint disease and inflammatory disease. Nurses in the program will also receive extra training in sports injuries, orthopedic trauma and musculoskeletal tumors. The addition of ortho-certified nurses brings Saint John’s closer to achieving American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition®, the highest and most prestigious international distinction a health care organization or hospital can receive for nursing excellence and outstanding patient care. Considered the “gold standard” for nursing services, Magnet Recognition acknowledges that patients are receiving the highest quality of care. We are deeply grateful to Marianna and David Fisher for a gift that will truly make an impact.

Introducing the New Foundation Trustees The Foundation’s board of trustees continues to grow in size and strength. By joining the Foundation board, these selfless individuals are giving their time and talent to make our organization more impactful. We welcome them with deep gratitude.
Charles F. (Chuck) Adams is a partner and managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Co. He is responsible for the firm's health care investment banking practice in the West and Midwest. Chuck earned a BA from UCLA in economics and business and an MBA in finance and accounting from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. “Chuck serves as a trusted advisor to some of the largest health care companies in the world,” says trustee David Tracy. His knowledge and experience in the health care space will be a great asset to the Saint John's Foundation board.
Rudolph A. (Rudy) Bedford, MD, is a highly regarded gastroenterologist in Los Angeles and a leader in interventional endoscopy. Dr. Bedford earned his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. His extensive post-graduate training included the Hospital Advance Fellowship Program for Therapeutic Endoscopy at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Dr. Bedford has served as president of the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology.
Jae Goodman is the chief creative officer and co-head of CAA Marketing, a division of Creative Artists Agency. Under Jae’s leadership, CAA Marketing has become one of the world’s most respected and most awarded marketing agencies. Jae and his wife, Dawn, have two children and devote considerable time to a range of philanthropic and volunteer activities. “Jae brings a very unique perspective to the board,” says trustee David Tracy. “His experiences of helping brand some of the largest companies in the world will help our board as we continue to expand our message and reach in the community.”
H. Thomas (Tom) Hicks and his wife, Noelle, are Pacific Palisades residents. Tom has spent his career in finance, most recently serving as chief financial officer of URS Corporation, one of the largest engineering firms in the United States. “We are so fortunate to have Noelle and Tom Hicks joining our Saint John’s Foundation family,” says board member Mary Flaherty. “They have been longtime residents and philanthropic donors to our Westside community. Saint John’s will be fortunate to be the beneficiaries of their attention.”
Laura K. Siart grew up in Southern California and earned a law degree from the University of Tulsa. She served as deputy attorney general in Nevada before spending eight years in the legal department at First Interstate Bank. She was then appointed interim legal advisor for the governor of Nevada, a position she held until 1994. She is a member of the board of directors of the Alliance Française of Los Angeles and the John Douglas French Foundation, which provides seed money for promising Alzheimer’s research. Laura and her husband, Bill, live in Pacific Palisades.
Nadine E. Tilley is a longtime resident of Los Angeles who recently moved to Hidden Valley, where she raises, breeds and shows champion Andalusian horses. A supporter of the University of Southern California, Nadine and her late husband, William H. Tilley, endowed the USC mascot “Traveler.” Nadine has two adult children, Nicole and John, who are also supporters of Saint John’s Health Center.
Stanley (Stan) Trilling became acquainted with Saint John’s in 1963 when he was working as a pharmaceutical representative for Roche Labs and the hospital was his client. It was at that time he became friends with many of the hospital staff. When Stanley later moved to Santa Monica, he became even more engaged with the hospital, serving on the board of counselors since 2010 and the John Wayne Cancer Institute board of advisors since 2011. Stanley is a director of Credit-Suisse in Los Angeles. He and his wife, Linda, have two children and three grandchildren.
Shannon M. Wickstrom has been a registered nurse at Saint John’s since 1999. She attended USC and received her nursing degree at Mount Saint Mary’s College. She and her husband, Kirk, have three children, all born at Saint John’s. “We're thrilled to have an RN as a member of the board of trustees,” says John M. Robertson, MD, chairman of the board. “She may be the first RN we’ve ever had. She represents the nursing perspective of the hospital to the Foundation. Shannon is connected to direct patient care all day long. Nurses are true patient advocates, and we need that perspective.”
Trustee John Huarte Honored by Heisman Trophy Trust Saint John’s Health Center Foundation trustee John Huarte was honored at the 80th annual Heisman Dinner Gala at the Marriott Marquis Times Square in New York City in December. The Heisman Trophy Trust each year recognizes previous trophy winners on the 25th and 50th anniversaries of their winning the award. John won the Heisman Trophy in 1964 as quarterback at Notre Dame. John enjoyed a spectacular senior season in 1964 under first-year Irish coach Ara Parseghian, completing 114 of 205 passes for 2,062 yards and 16 touchdowns. Notre Dame finished the season 9-1, losing only to the University of Southern California. For 10 years, John played professional football for teams that included the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. He retired in 1975 and now presides as president and CEO over one of the largest distributorships of granite, marble and ceramic tile in the western United States, Arizona Tile. John and his wife, Eileen, who has been a member of the Irene Dunne Guild since 1995, have supported Saint John’s mission as generous donors for many years, and he has served as a Saint John’s Health Center Foundation trustee since 2000.

Health Center Receives State-of-the-Art Disinfection System Saint John’s Health Center has installed a state-of-the-art disinfection system, becoming one of the first hospitals on the West Coast to adopt the new technology. Surfacide, an automatic UV-C room disinfection system, was purchased with a $120,000 gift to the hospital from Saint John’s Health Center Foundation. “This is exciting because it’s at the forefront in technology for cleaning and disinfecting,” says Angela Vassallo, the infection prevention director at Saint John’s. “We’re using it as a supplement to cleaning. We put these machines in areas after housekeeping does the initial cleaning. These machines go the extra mile to kill germs and organisms.” In recent years, public health officials nationwide have called for new, stricter measures to reduce transmission rates of hospital-acquired infections, including so-called “superbugs” that resist antibiotic treatment. Surfacide eradicates multidrug-resistant organisms—even the Ebola virus. The
equipment is used nightly in every surgical suite, every operating room and in isolation rooms. Operating rooms can now be sanitized in 30 minutes or less. “Beyond measure it’s the best of the best out there,” says Eddie Paez, director of environmental, lift and transportation at the Health Center. “Saint John’s is among the first hospitals on the West Coast to have this. We are Ebola-ready.” Angela credits John M. Robertson, MD, chair of the board of trustees and the longest-running member of the hospital’s infection prevention committee, as well as the Foundation for seeing the value in the technology. “We’re so lucky and blessed at Saint John’s to have people at all levels who care about patients and each other,” Angela says. “It’s about patients, staff and visitors. When the Foundation and trustees believe there is something necessary to make the hospital even better, they invest in it.”

The specimen repository is one of the treasures of the John Wayne Cancer Institute. The repository is a bank of frozen specimens from cancer patients established by Institute co-founder Donald L. Morton, MD, and collected since 1971. The specimens are linked to a database containing records for more than 14,600 patients. The repository is a gateway to the world of personalized cancer care—treatments based on each individual’s unique genetic and biochemical makeup. Thanks to a generous gift from the Irene Dunne Guild, the Institute will soon purchase a new, state-of-theart, subzero storage unit for the continued collection of specimens, carrying on the vision of Dr. Morton. “The guild voted unanimously to donate toward the specimen repository,” says Dolly Niemann, chair of the Irene Dunne Guild resource allocation committee. “We are excited to see the synergy between the Health Center and the Institute, and we want to support the continued success of the researchers at the Institute.”
It Takes a Village We value every gift from our donors. When we come together as a community, we generate the power to change lives: ensuring a child in need can receive cleft palate surgery, helping a father of three recover from a heart attack or advancing vital research at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Donations from more than 1,800 individuals, corporations and foundations have, in the past year, created the kind of synergy and impact that makes a significant difference in the lives of many patients and in the health of our community. We are grateful for each contribution, however big or small, and the sentiment behind each gift. Together, we can do great things, and we thank you.
Help for Aching Knees Saint John’s Health Center is proud to announce the establishment of the Center for Knee Replacement. Knee replacement surgery is highly successful, and several options for the surgery are now available,
including full or partial knee replacement and minimally invasive approaches. Healthgrades® recently recognized Saint John’s as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement™. The center is located at 2001 Santa Monica Boulevard, Suite 760.

SAINT JOHN'S, SUMMER 2015
henever Gretchen A. Willison is asked by good people to help find the resources they need to do good work, she finds it hard to say “no.” And when she takes on a cause, most people find it hard to tell her “no.” She’s a wildly successful fundraiser, according to her many friends and colleagues. But when friend Richard M. Ferry asked her more than a decade ago to join him on the board of trustees of the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation, she said “no” even though she wanted to say “yes.” At the time, she was intensely focused on completing an eight-year campaign to raise $200 million for a new cathedral in Los Angeles. The year after the cathedral opened in 2002, Gretchen joined the Foundation’s board. “A hospital is so profoundly integral to what’s important to a community,” says Gretchen, a trustee since 2003. “Saint John’s serves everybody. It serves you no matter your ethnicity, your economic standing or your age. It is there for everyone. The people of Saint John’s believe they are a community hospital serving the people of this community. They are who they say they are.” Her style is genuine as well. She speaks with conviction about what bothers her, such as the politicians—on both sides of the aisle—in Washington, D.C. She talks with equal passion about the things that hearten her: her children, grandchildren and her husband, Bruce. She wipes away tears when mentioning her family. Her faith also heartens her. The rich reds and golds of religious artwork covering the walls in her home are testament to religion’s centrality in her life. “I love being a Catholic. The church tells you God loves every one of us every day, every part of us, inside and outside.” Gretchen also loves Los Angeles, where she was born, though over the years she has moved from La Cañada to Mexico City to Portland, Oregon, and back to Pasadena, following Bruce’s career as a banking executive. When Bruce, formerly president of First Interstate Bank and Home Savings
and Loan, was named dean of the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, the couple moved to the Westside. Since then, they’ve made a huge impact on their local community. Retired now, Gretchen and Bruce can often be found working together on philanthropic efforts. They have many separate interests, too. She’s helping the Carmelite Sisters raise $22 million to rebuild their Duarte facility for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. “These women are saints, I’m telling you,” she says, adding her signature phrase: “How do you say ‘no’?” Meanwhile Bruce is focused on inner-city schools as voluntary chair of the Catholic Schools Consortium and sits on a halfdozen corporate and community boards.
The people of Saint John’s believe they are a community hospital serving the people of this community. They are who they say they are.” – Gretchen A. Willison
Indeed their lives are so tightly scheduled that they make it a point to sit down once a week to match up their calendars. And Gretchen admits to being so busy that she rarely sits down, unless it’s at her computer, until she goes to bed each night. Family is a priority, however. Dozens of silver-framed photos of the family that now totals 22 members have a showplace on a round table in her living room, which opens onto a sweeping panorama of Westwood and the UCLA campus. In addition to six
children and their spouses, Gretchen and Bruce have eight grandchildren, with the ninth expected in September. Although spread across the country, the family gets together regularly. They spent Christmas in the family’s log cabin in central Oregon. In the past few months, Gretchen has visited one daughter’s children in the California desert, helped a son and daughter-in-law finish decorating the house they built in Colorado and attended a grandson’s high-school graduation in Virginia. Last year Gretchen retired from what she insists was her last paid fundraising effort: helping Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson raise $33 million for improvements at St. Monica Catholic Community. Her plan now is to focus on family and increasing her involvement with Saint John’s. Over the years, Gretchen has made many contributions to the Health Center. Together with two other trustees, she chaired The New Century Circle that helped rebuild the hospital through inpatient room naming opportunities. Last year she mentored staff working on the annual giving program. She currently sits on the Chautauqua Committee, responsible for the Foundation’s annual retreat where trustees and donors gather with physicians, researchers and administrators for a weekend of education and camaraderie. Trustee emeritus William S. Mortensen knew of Gretchen’s strong volunteerism on behalf of St. Monica Catholic Community and was eager to sponsor her for the Foundation board. “She has an amazing ability to connect people,” he explains. He continues, “Gretchen is a skilled fundraiser. She’s highly organized and a great planner and motivator of people. But more important, she is one of the most likeable people I know—fun and bright on a number of subjects. She’s been a fantastic addition to the Foundation board. The excitement Gretchen brings to everything she does is contagious.” Gretchen isn’t sure what’s next for her at Saint John’s, but she’s open to saying “yes” to what the Foundation needs her to do. “I want to be present to the needs of this organization,” she says. “I’m not done here.” •

ROBOTIC SURGERY
A SURE HAND AT TREATING PROSTATE CANCER
G
rowing up the third of five boys in a middle-class family in rural Oregon, Timothy G. Wilson, MD, so admired his small-town family practitioner that he set on a course to follow in his footsteps.
But then as often happens, Dr. Wilson, who joined the John Wayne Cancer Institute in April as professor and chief of urology and director of the new urologic oncology research program, found his passion—surgery—while in medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University. “Surgery allows you to see a problem and fix it,” says Dr. Wilson, adding that in urology surgeons operate on many parts of the body, including the pelvis, kidneys and lung areas. “The surgeries are very often successful—it’s really great work.” Urologic malignancies account for about 40% of all cancers and range from men with prostate and testicular cancer to men and women with kidney or bladder cancer. Surgery also often involves reconstruction that significantly enhances a patient’s’ post-surgery quality of life. For example, advanced techniques now make it possible for surgeons to create a new bladder that functions internally—a previously impossible reconstruction that eliminates the need for a urine drainage bag outside the body. Dr. Wilson focuses on cancers of the pelvis and robotic surgery. At Saint John's Health Center, Wilson and his team of urologists will use the latest in robotic surgery, the da Vinci Xi. Earlier versions have been used for prostate surgery since 2001 and for bladder and kidney cancers since 2003. With the da Vinci, surgeons operate from a console that provides a close-up, high-definition, 3-D view of the patient’s

anatomy. They use “joysticks” to move surgical instruments mounted on the robot through small punctures or slits in the skin. The robot’s camera can illuminate fluorescent-labeled chemicals injected into the body to help surgeons distinguish between normal and cancerous tissues and increase the precision of surgery. Dr. Wilson says, “The robots allow for a very consistent, reliable and reproducible surgery.” An early adaptor of robotic surgery, Dr. Wilson has performed some 3,000 over the past 15 years. His expertise in roboticassisted laparoscopic prostatectomy is sought around the world, and he travels frequently throughout Europe and Asia to perform surgery, serve as a visiting faculty member and act as a proctor for surgeons learning robotic techniques. At the City of Hope, where he served as chief of urology from 1992 to 2015 and as head of its prostate cancer program since 2003, Dr. Wilson was instrumental in developing a consensus among world experts on the merits of laparoscopicrobotic surgery versus open surgery for prostate and bladder cancers. After systematically reviewing the research literature, the findings were published in European Urology—one of the most respected journals in urology. The experts concluded that success rates were about equal, but robotic surgery for prostate cancer resulted in fewer complications, less blood loss, shorter hospitalizations,
and quicker returns to bladder control and sexual function. In his role at the Institute, Dr. Wilson’s vision is to find better ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating urological malignancies. That will include working to clarify issues in the current debate surrounding prostate cancer, such as when to biopsy and how to identify who truly needs surgery once diagnosed with this slow-growing cancer; looking toward improving techniques to minimize damage to surrounding tissue during surgery; and helping surgeons gain experience with new techniques through daily broadcasts of robotic surgeries online. When the program is fully underway, he hopes to have on board four or five urologists, as well as two non-physician scientists to work on research to translate new findings into medical practice. “The Institute’s interest in profiling the genome of cancers gives us the opportunity to understand this for bladder cancers and prostate cancers as well,” Dr. Wilson says. “The Institute and I are aligned in our desire to do things in the same way. The new program we will be starting offers an exciting opportunity.” Dr. Wilson and his wife, Cheryl, are also looking forward to living in a different part of Los Angeles with his move to the Institute. Besides engaging in a range of outdoors sports, going to the theater and traveling, the couple enjoys family time with their three grown children and 4-year-old grandson. •

Wise Counsel The Foundation looks to Carl W. McKinzie for sound advice. WRITTEN BY LAUREL DIGANGI PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O'DONNELL

SAINT JOHN'S, SUMMER 2015
C
arl W. McKinzie’s involvement with Saint John’s Health Center began some years back—as a patient in its emergency room. An active father who enjoyed biking, skiing and playing baseball with his three sons, Carl and his boys suffered their fair share of sports injuries—necessitating occasional trips to doctors’ offices and the ER. His close friend, orthopedist John R. Sellman, MD, eventually invited Carl to serve on the Health Center’s board of directors. “Dr. Sellman had plenty of opportunities to ask me while I was recovering from my injuries,” Carl jokes, “but he waited until I was rational.”
Carl has been a Foundation trustee since 2007 and served on the hospital board of directors from 2001 to 2007 and 2008 to 2012. He was chair of the hospital board from 2003 to 2007. A wellknown and respected corporate attorney with Riordan & McKinzie and Bingham McCutchen, he was instrumental during the Health Center’s recent change in sponsorship by helping the Foundation and Health Center establish an independent governance structure. The governance bylaws empower the Health Center board to make strategic decisions for the hospital. “Carl is a unique individual who has given so much of his time and expertise to the Health Center and the Foundation over the years but particularly over the last two transitional years,” says Donna F. Tuttle, a Foundation trustee and chair of the Providence Saint John’s Health Center board of directors. “He’s extremely bright about understanding governance and creating new concepts. Most people don’t create new concepts. They stick with what’s existing. Carl was quick to realize that Saint John’s needed new, creative concepts in governance and, more than any other individual, influenced the governance structure we have in place today for the Foundation and the Health Center.” Carl currently serves as a strategic advisor to the hospital board and, in addition, chairs the Foundation’s affiliation fund advisory committee. When enough interest is accrued from a substantial fund that resulted from the transition of sponsorship to Providence, the committee will administer these funds. “We’ll be using the interest for health care purposes that serve a broader community across 29 zip codes,” he explains. Carl grew up in Lubbock, Texas, where his 97-year-old mother still
lives today. Although neither of his hardworking parents had much formal schooling, they instilled in him a desire to pursue higher education. “I recognized that an education would open doors for me that wouldn’t have opened otherwise,” he says.
I enjoy working with such caring, dedicated doctors, nurses, administrators and staff...” – Carl W. McKinzie Carl pursued an MBA, followed by law school and a stint in the Air Force. His first job in the legal profession was at Nossaman, Waters, Scott, Krueger & Riordan where he established his lifelong friendship and partnership with former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan. Today Carl lives in Santa Monica with his wife Rena. Both share a passion for education. Rena volunteers at Santa Monica High School, and Carl serves on various nonprofit boards, including the board of The Riordan Foundation which, among other educational pursuits, supports Alliance College-Ready Public Schools— the largest nonprofit charter organization in Los Angeles serving 11,000 students in economically disadvantaged areas. The couple’s eldest son, Wayne, is a lawyer with a large firm in Charlotte, North Carolina. Son
Clinton is chief deputy district attorney in the largest judicial district in Colorado and is the author of five crime thrillers published by Random House. One of the Alliance schools, Morgan McKinzie High School, was named in memory of Carl and Rena’s youngest son, who in 1992 tragically passed away in a private plane crash during his junior year at Princeton. “His college and high school friends still stay in touch with us,” Carl says. Carl’s home, where he’s lived with his family for 43 years, is a repository of fond memories, filled with photographs and mementos of family vacations and his active sons enjoying numerous outdoor pursuits, such as skiing, surfing, camping and rock climbing. Clinton’s novels are proudly displayed on a nearby shelf. A model train set—a memento of his boys’ childhood—circles the walls of an adjoining room. And, of course, photographs of his five grandchildren are plentiful. When not engaged in community service or business ventures, Carl enjoys spending time with them, often accompanying them on trips to the Santa Monica pier and other Southern California tourist attractions. He also enjoys Foundationrelated activities and is excited about the hospital’s future. Sponsorship by Providence Health & Services means further growth and prosperity for the Health Center and its programs, Carl says. “With 34 hospitals in the Providence system, we now have more resources available,” he says. “I enjoy working with such caring, dedicated doctors, nurses, administrators and staff who are making a difference for their community at large and helping those who don’t have the economic resources get the care they might not have otherwise.” •

AMBASSADORS for Saint John’s For 40 years, the Foundation has provided leadership and philanthropic support. Written by SANDI DRAPER and SHARI ROAN
M
emorable things have been said about doing good in the world. Consider the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “We must become the change we want to see in the world,” or Mother Teresa, “We can do no great things; only small things with great love.” Trustees of Saint John’s Health Center Foundation have heeded the call to serve others. The Foundation was formed 40 years ago by merging two early Saint John's support groups, the ladies’ guild and the men’s board of regents, and was influenced by a culture of compassion established by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth—a principle the Foundation continues to embrace. As a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, the Foundation is governed by an all-volunteer board of trustees. The past four decades are defined by the fearless leadership of the trustees—some of them longtime members of the Health Center board—who rolled up their sleeves to lead fundraising campaigns and support the Health Center through difficult times. They include Jerry B. Epstein (a member since 1975), Allan B. Goldman (1978) and “newcomer” Waldo H. Burnside (1981). Those trustees, in turn, sing the praises of key Foundation players such as John Anderson; Irene Dunne; James L. Hesburgh; Marion Jorgensen; Glen McDaniel; Ruben F. Mettler, PhD; John H. Michel; Caroline Singleton; Donna F. Tuttle and Betty Williams. As they rattle off names and accomplishments, each man acknowledges that
he probably is overlooking the contributions of many other trustees. “The responsibility of the Foundation was primarily to raise money, and fundraisers became ‘friend-raisers,’” says Waldo. “Once someone became involved and experienced the culture of camaraderie and enthusiasm for the Health Center, their interest in giving grew.” Such “friends” have seen the Health Center through good and bad times. Trustees take pride in the formal fundraising projects, which began in 1976 with a $12 million campaign for the Ambulatory Care Center followed by $19 million raised in “The Forward Fund” campaign (1981), then the $25 million “Commitment to Tomorrow” campaign (1986). When the 1994 Northridge earthquake devastated the Health Center, needs multiplied and efforts to rebuild the hospital included the “Campaign for Saint John’s” (1994), with a $125 million target, and the $100 million “Challenge to Lead” campaign (2006). “Those fundraising campaigns galvanized the efforts of the many members of the Foundation, both as fund-givers and fund-getters,” Allan says. Other fundraisers, such as The Jimmy Stewart Relay, which began in 1981, also aided the Health Center. Jimmy’s wife, Gloria, a Saint John’s supporter for years, was instrumental in arranging for the late actor to lend his name to the race. That’s just one example of the show business contingent that has supported Saint John’s. Another is the late actress Irene Dunne, who negotiated for Saint John’s to receive 10% of the proceeds from the blockbuster movie How the West Was Won. She is the namesake of the Irene Dunne Guild, which continues to support Saint John’s. The hospital's celebrity supporters today include P!nk, David Foster, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Angela Lansbury, Vincent E. (Vin) Scully and Robert J. Wagner.

contributions, it is difficult to say ‘No.’” The Foundation’s goals, priorities, committees, values and commitment to the community reflect a continuity that unites the early boards with today’s members. Jerry sums up the Foundation’s 40-year anniversary this way: “I’ve served on a lot of boards over the years. There is no group that comes close to the quality of people who have served as Saint John’s Foundation trustees.” The diligence of the trustees over the past four decades has led to a board that today encompasses some of the wisest and most successful members of the community, says Lisa D. Nesbitt, a trustee since 2013 who serves on the board affairs committee. The committee helps identify potential new trustees. “This is a pretty amazing list of people who are leaders in the community,” Lisa says. “They have the resources and expertise to help raise money for the hospital.”

“A number of Health Center board of director members were recruited over the years from Foundation trustees,” Allan says. “Other directors recruited from the community later became Foundation trustees. The cross-pollination was important for the Health Center, broadening its community support and bringing different thinking to the challenges that arose.” Business leader trustees were instrumental in aiding Sister Marie Madeleine in the early years, he adds. “Sister set the values that were to be followed. Then she used each of them as a sounding board, because they were businessmen with significant expertise in a range of areas, and she was dedicated to operating a top-flight hospital,” Allan recalls. The trustees are leaders in the community, Jerry adds. “The list of trustees is comprised of giants in their fields, and they transfer that credibility to the Foundation. In the late 1970s, he helped create the Foundation’s Chautauqua Weekend, a yearly trustee weekend retreat that grew to include physicians. The bond between medical professionals and trustees is what allows the Foundation to raise money to attract the best doctors and acquire the latest technologies through their grateful patients. “For the most part, these sessions let us know the hospital’s needs so we can be the best possible ambassadors,” Waldo says. Allan thinks an early turning point for the Foundation came when Saint John’s visionary, president and chief executive Sister Marie Madeleine Shonka, SCL, broadened membership of the Health Center’s board of directors beyond the sisters to include lay leadership. In 1981, Robert T. Campion, J. Howard Edgerton, William A. Wilson and D. Gareth Wooton, MD, were elected to the board.
1992
Distinguished business and industry leaders have also befriended the Health Center. In mid1994, the William M. Keck Foundation, led at the time by Howard B. Keck, chairman, president and chief executive officer, gave $10 million to underwrite post-earthquake strategic planning. In 1999 the foundation, led by chairman, president and chief executive officer Robert Day (who was also a Saint John’s Health Center Foundation trustee), followed with a $20 million donation. Besides the Keck Foundation, scientist, physician and inventor Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, was a major contributor to the rebuilding campaign. Even social gatherings have been geared toward supporting the Health Center. The Epicurean Society brought together trustees and doctors a few times a year for friendship, conversation, good food and excellent wines. “These meetings inspired a lot of doctors to become personally involved in fundraising for the Foundation,” Jerry says.

Celebrating 40 Years The North Pavilion, built after the Northridge earthquake destroyed the hospital, opened in 2004.
While most hospitals have foundations, few are as involved in the decision-making as the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation, says Marcel Loh, chief executive of the Health Center and the John Wayne Cancer Institute. “Having that feeling of ownership is particularly important in improving how the hospital meets the needs of the community.” The Foundation has helped drive support for cherished community resources such as the Child and Family Development Center and public educational programs sponsored by Saint John’s. Thoughts of how to best serve the community and promote health and wellness will guide the Foundation as it embarks on an ambitious project of expansion over the next two decades. While the main hospital buildings reside on the north side of Santa Monica Boulevard, the properties across the street, dubbed the south campus, will be rebuilt to house state-of-the-art facilities

for the hospital’s centers of excellence in neuroscience, cardiac care, women’s health, orthopedics, prostate health and gastroenterology. With an emphasis on translational research delivered to the bedside, the south campus will include a new building for the John Wayne Cancer Institute and space for ambulatory care and research, says A. Redmond “Rusty” Doms, a trustee since 1996 who served as Foundation chair from 2001 to 2003. A second component of the development plans includes parking, an education and conference center, and visitor housing for families with a loved one hospitalized at Saint John’s. “One of the goals of Saint John’s, in addition to creating a world-class medical complex, is to make the Health Center communityoriented,” Rusty explains. “There will be a health and wellness area and an education and conference center. All that will be available for

community use.” The Health Center is working with the city on development review permit applications, and several Foundation members are involved in various aspects of planning, says Rusty, who served on a three-person committee to oversee the development of the new Los Angeles County Hospital. One objective of the Health Center’s future development is to promote the internationally respected John Wayne Cancer Institute and elevate its stature in Southern California, says Carole Schwartz, a trustee since 2010 and a member of the Foundation board of trustees’ cancer committee. “One of the things we’re working on is branding the John Wayne Cancer Institute with Saint John’s Health Center so that people view them together, to see them as one. You’ve got a huge, global brand associated with the John Wayne Cancer Institute. The name is known internationally. But when you hear that name,
you don’t necessarily think of Saint John’s in the same breath. Locally, when you say Saint John’s, people think of it as an amazing community hospital, but they don’t pair that with the Institute automatically.” Expansion will also help the Health Center meet its goal of continuing to attract top health care professionals. “A priority is the continuing recruitment and retention of great doctors,” Lisa adds. “It’s because of the doctors’ skills that we end up at Saint John’s. We want the best.” The next two decades will require hard work and unwavering dedication to the mission. But the people who comprise the Foundation in its 40th year are up to the task. “If you look ahead at the next 10 or 20 years, I think you’ll see a transformation taking place,” Carole says, “much like what happened after the earthquake and rebuilding the hospital. We have new leadership taking us into the next decade with significant growth while still maintaining the excellence of the past.” •

Foundation trustee since 2007, Shelby Notkin’s admiration of hospitals began at the impressionable age of 5 when he accompanied his father, a cardiologist, on his Sunday rounds at a large Catholic hospital in Shelby’s birthplace of Paterson, New Jersey. “I saw how wonderful a Catholicsponsored hospital could be,” says Shelby, who is Jewish. “My dad said it was the cleanest hospital he was ever in and that the sisters cared about having an outstanding hospital more than other hospital administrators.”

SAINT JOHN'S, SUMMER 2015
Decades later these memories encouraged Shelby to donate his time and resources to the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation. “Saint John’s has not only lived up to but exceeded my positive expectations,” he says. Another factor stems from personal tragedy: Shelby lost both his first wife and his sister to breast cancer. Thirteen years ago, in their memory, he established The Notkin Family Breast Cancer Recovery Program at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. With his daughter, Michelle Notkin Rosen, on the board, the program provides assistance to women undergoing breast cancer treatment, serving more than 400 women in 2014 alone. After Shelby moved to Los Angeles to live closer to Michelle and his grandson, he learned about Saint John’s Health Center Foundation and was eager to support the hospital. “Shelby is the consummate leader,” says Robert O. Klein, president and chief executive officer of Saint John’s Health Center Foundation. “He has never wavered in his support of the Health Center and in his desire to help us keep improving and growing as a Foundation. We are so grateful for his friendship and expertise.” Shelby’s expertise comes from a long, successful career in the financial industry on both Wall Street and the West Coast. After graduating from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University and spending two years in the Army, he began his career at E.F. Hutton & Co. as national institutional sales manager. In 1973 he began work at Morgan Stanley and in 1977
Saint John’s has not only lived up to but exceeded my positive expectations.” – Shelby Notkin became principal/manager of its new San Francisco office—the firm’s first West Coast transfer. For more than 20 years he worked with Capital Group in several key positions: chairman of private client services, principal investment officer and global portfolio manager. His belief in giving back extends beyond the Foundation to a history of serving on many nonprofit boards. Currently he serves on the Music Center’s board of directors as treasurer and is on the UCLA Anderson School of Management board of visitors. He is also the codirector of Wilshire Boulevard Temple investment committee and on the board of the Jewish Graduate Student Initiative in Southern California. In addition, ever since his grandson was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, Shelby has been highly involved in related organizations. In 2012 the Los Angeles chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation honored him and his family with its prestigious Caregiver Award. Today Shelby resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Darcie Denkert Notkin, with whom he’s recently celebrated four years of marriage, and their two rescued cavalier King Charles spaniels, Pumpkin and Pandora.
Holding a prominent position in the Notkin living room is a unique retirement gift from his colleagues at Capital Group: a pair of his bronzed, size 13 shoes. Shelby explains, “Shortly after I became chairman of the division of private client services at Capital Group, somebody did something quite foolish. And instead of telling him it was foolish, I raised up my foot and said, ‘Next time you’ll feel my size 13s.’” Although Shelby’s size 13s were legendary at Capital, Darcie is quick to acknowledge his kind and gentle nature. “You’ll never find a person with more integrity or with a larger capacity to love,” she says. “So many of us face ethical dilemmas every day, and most of us have to think: what is the right thing to do? Shelby is the only person I know who does the right thing instinctively.” He has been doing not only “right” but extraordinary things for the Foundation. “I want to ensure that we can continue to deliver top-quality medical care as well as help people have a better life,” he says. “And due to the strength and dedication of our great new partner, Providence Health & Services, I strongly believe that our future has been ensured.” •

t seemed as if Gretchen and Peter V. Haight became steadfast friends of Saint John’s Health Center from the minute they arrived in Los Angeles in 1984. Peter, at the invitation of a friend, immediately joined the Foundation’s board of trustees. The couple devoted time and support for the Health Center and enjoyed the friendships and sense of fulfillment that comes with serving their community. But it wasn’t until many years later—in late 2014—when the Health Center was able to truly return the favor and come to the aid of the Haights during their hour of need. In September Gretchen was suddenly stricken with GuillainBarré syndrome, a mysterious disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The disorder can be lifethreatening if it affects the lungs and cardiovascular system, which it did in Gretchen’s case. Within 48 hours of the onset of the disorder, she was paralyzed. A team of 13 physicians attended to Gretchen during the six weeks she spent in the intensive care unit. A member of her family—either Peter or one of the couple’s three adult children who live in the area (they have six children and four grandchildren)—spent every night with her. “I almost didn’t make it,” Gretchen says. “It’s a miracle that I’m still alive. The hospital is wonderful. When people find out how close to death I was, they say, ‘You must have been terrified.’ But I was never scared because everyone on the hospital staff did everything they could to help me feel supported and calm and at peace.”

SAINT JOHN'S, SUMMER 2015
Gretchen is quite familiar with the Saint John’s brand of care. Following a career as an editor and writer, she shifted her focus to spiritual matters, becoming a volunteer chaplain at the Health Center. Gretchen and Peter are also deeply involved in St. Augustine-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Santa Monica. Gretchen facilitates the healing prayer group and centering prayer group at the church. “The hospital did a lot to just shepherd me through the illness,” she says. “A chaplain came each day and kept me inspired by scripture.” Gretchen spent several more weeks at two rehabilitation centers before she arrived home on December 10 for a joyous holiday. Today Gretchen and Peter focus on their blessings. Gretchen hopes to soon resume her volunteer chaplaincy work, while Peter enjoys his hobby of designing and building furniture. He recently completed a dining room table for one of his children. Peter also remains busy with his work at the Foundation. Through the years, he has been instrumental in guiding the Foundation on financial matters. “I think the most fulfilling part of working with the Foundation is that I’ve been able to apply what I had learned in my career in terms of fundraising and investment as well as trust and estate work to help Saint John’s on the investment and finance committees,” he says. “Also, I chaired the planned giving committee shortly after it got started in the early ‘90s.” The Haights have made plans in their will to remember Saint John’s. Peter is a proponent of using IRAs to distribute wealth to charitable organizations. “When giving to charity, probably the first option to consider should be an IRA,” he says. “IRAs are a wonderful vehicle for giving. With Saint John’s as an IRA beneficiary, rather than heirs, the Health Center will receive the full value of these funds, tax-free, whereas heirs will be subject to both income tax and estate taxes, before receiving any benefit. “Many people enjoy giving during their lifetimes and seeing the benefits of their financial support,” he notes. “But for some, it can be difficult to confront setting up estate plans. One major reward, however, is that estate donors have the reassurance of knowing they will leave a positive legacy and will not burden their survivors with difficult decisions.” Engaging in the process of planning gifts, setting up the estate and periodically making revisions are important to all involved because tax and estate law continues to change, Peter says, adding: “Over the years estate gifts have made a huge difference to the well-being of Saint John’s.” •
LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY Leaving your IRA to charity can have lasting benefits. By designating Saint John’s Health Center Foundation as the beneficiary of your IRA, you help to continue our mission of providing compassionate care. You also receive financial benefits for your heirs and estate including: > Reduced estate taxes after death—Your IRA gift allows for a federal estate tax deduction.
> Charitable gift given in full amount, tax-free—Charities can receive the full amount of your IRA, as opposed to heirs who are subject to income tax. > Personal gratification and a lasting legacy—You create a legacy for the entire community for years to come. “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
~ Charles Dickens
The world is chaotic now, and many of us have a sense of frustration. What can we do to make this world God gave us a better place? As friends of Saint John’s, we can’t settle the Middle East or nuclear power struggles. But, as Charles Dickens tells us, if we lighten the burden of another we are useful in this world. So whether what we do is great and noticeable or quiet and unseen, as supporters of Saint John’s, it is our role to reach out, to be useful, to help where we can.
~ Sister Maureen Craig, SCL
