MArch Thesis New Northern Frontiers Alex Hobday, Graham Hogg, Catriona Macdonald, Tom Smith Awarded Wilson & Gunn Travel Scholarship 2013 Exhibited as part Reactivate! the Lighthouse, Glasgow
Abstract New Northern Frontier 2063 - The highlands and islands of Scotland will be the new frontier of national and international resources and industry. FROM FRINGE TO FRONTIER Scotland’s north + west will transform from a perceived periphery, to the new social, industrial and economic frontier. Changing climate, advances in renewable technologies + new shipping patterns in the Arctic will revolutionise the area, reversing traditional trends. Scotland will re-evaluate its political structure, with more devolved power to the new Bioregions. INFRASTRUCTURE New rail routes, ferry connections and tunnels will act as arteries to outlying communities. Investment in infrastructure will support: population growth in the north + west as people will migrate to areas of resource prosperity; local industries; new grids to facilitate the export of energy to international neighbours; and optimisation of natural resource productivity. RE-INVENTING INDUSTRY Neo-traditional industries will be the backbone of Scotland- with adapted approaches to achieving an efficient, fair and balanced productive landscape. Historic boundary lines will be abandoned, with planning based on landscape, now divided into Bioregions. Eastern Scotland will be predominantly arable, with livestock and forestry to the west. Vernacular materials used in construction. North Sea oil production will decrease and with interest shifting to Arctic waters. INHABITING There will be a reversal in traditional migration patterns, with a population increase to the north + west. Cities will grow: Oban, Fort William, Stornoway, Scapa. Inverness will become an international air hub of the north, home to the National Gallery of Scottish Art and National Museum of Industry and Technology; and Scapa + Stornoway the international shipping hubs. Recreation will regain importance, with integration and synergy between work and play. The highlands + islands will be the new northern frontier.

PgDip Thesis Possible Orkney Alex Hobday, Graham Hogg A+DS Urban Design Award Nominee
Abstract In an uncertain future Scotland’s identity, economy and society could become lost - are we a Northern outpost of a European region centred around the Mediterranean? Or should we begin to consider this nation as part of a wider Nordic region? The climate, culture and economy of Scotland all have more in common with Scandinavia than central Europe, but our society and its architecture currently do not reflect this. Exploring the themes of land and sea we will ask why Scotland is not following the path of its Nordic neighbours and our main aim is to uncover situations where Scotland can learn from Scandinavia and examine the feasibility of Scotland as a Nordic country. At a time when the question of Scottish nationality is coming under consideration we are looking to examine the culture and society wider Nordic region as well as Scotland itself as a place within this region. Our initial investigations have identified our current lack of connections within this region, however in the Orkney Isles we have identified a strategic location to instigate new connections. A former Earldom of Norway and later Denmark, Orkney was at the centre of the historical Western Norse Empire - nowadays remnants of this Norse past are still apparent in everyday life. Scotland’s location between the Atlantic and the North Sea is hugely significant and at present under used as an asset, both for the shipping and energy industries, with climate change as a driver for changes in both energy production and new global shipping routes via the North-East passage, huge changes to the landscape and seascape being possible in this uncertain future. Nordic Scotland aims to examine these changes and their significance at four different scales: Global, Northern Europe, Scotland and more specifically the Orkney Isles. The main outcome of this was imagining Orkney as a new northern city, based on the idea of a network city, spread out over the isles, with industry and population centres taking advantage of the different seascapes and landscape provided. It is a polemic for a new way of living and working on the archipelago, the advantages of a city combined with those of a rural island chain.
This idea was developed and tested through an intensive mapping exercise, two exploratory visits to the archipelago and a meeting with interested parties held in the Scottish Parliament attended by 60 people. Asking people to imagine this future and all its possibilities and what it could mean for them, its positive and negative aspects and how it could both damage or enhance the unique landscape of the islands. By doing this we gained a deeper understanding of the problems experienced by the population of Orkney and how by changing their perceptions of what was possible for Orkney also changed the perceptions of these problems.
